Shallow and Pedantic FTW.
"Pedantic" is an interesting choice of word for bands you don't like. Care to elaborate?
:beatnik:
pe·dan·tic adj. Characterized by a narrow, often ostentatious concern for book learning and formal rules: a pedantic attention to details.
Meh. I've always thought the 'Stones sucked, period.
You know I kind of agree with you about Green Day. I just think it's funny that I like their side projects like The Network and Foxboro Hot Tubs (And I know it's them), but whenever I go back and listen to Green Day I just can't stand them. The Stones? As long as their shirts stay on I don't mind. And why does everybody want to marry the Jonas brothers?

Enter RANT MODE
:soapbox::soapbox:
I don't think pedantic is the right word, but you know what is really shallow and pedantic? People who listen to a song just because it's been on Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I despise pretentious pretenders that think they're fans of the band just because they can play the guitar solo and brag about it.
Some of your bands are actually people.
Dragonforce, There way to obsessed with speed and there songs have no substance what so ever. The only reason there popular is because of Guitar Hero. My biggest problem with them though is there fans and there own attitude. It seems like they think Dragonforce is the greatest and most technical band that ever exsisted and everyone should just bow down to them.
/Rant
This thread has far too much pedantry.
Maybe it's just me, but I find popular music to be a shallow pursuit from top to bottom. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, just shrug at the stupidity and follow the hooks. In many ways the art of enjoying all music requires 'getting over yourself' and deciding not to be a critic as a starting point.
As an example take Glenn Gould's recordings. They're some of the most revered (And most reviled in some circles) recordings of the 20th century. I mean, the man hums while he plays. Even over Bach. He has no respect for the conventions of tempo established by tradition. Yet if you can set aside all that and just listen... his music is exceptional. Pure joy to listen to, IMHO.
Green Day's first popular song was called 'Dookie' IIRC. If you're expecting them not to be shallow and pedantic you're already off on the wrong foot. Their music is just dumb fun. Relax and enjoy it, and if you don't like it listen to something else.
:egypt:
I don't know where people get the idea that music is supposed to be intellectual. Do you take a bite of chocalate, grimace, and spit it out saying "Where is the meaning in the chocalate" or "yeah I know it's dumb and ignorant but I still like this pleasurable sensation on my tongue I guess my tastes aren't refined".
*listening to Dragonforce...*
Good god, they sound like Dethklok!
And Strike: just for the record, the Stones did kick ass in the 60's and 70's. It's just that it's been a while since then.
I find some of those bands to be both didactic and dialectic.
Hey, I just like listening to them. I'm not making any claims as to how good they are. ~D
The Rolling Stones are a sacred cow Martok, expect some pig-headed opposition if you dare say something that puts them in a bad light... :drama1:
Personally, I do enjoy the good 'ol classics like "jumpin jack flash", "Satisfaction", "Sympathy for the Devil" etc. But I also think that they are overrated just the same. Just like "the Boss"... The difference here is that this guy has nothing at all to show for, in my book at least. (Well, he does not strike me as shallow if that counts) :laugh4:
Did I step on any toes now?!? So sorry, but I could not help myself....

Oh, for the record. I dont like Garbage in any form, musical-wise or the kind you find in the street.
How wonderful it is the land of utterly subjective opinions! :mickey:
I didn't say the Stones were good either. I just said they kicked ass.
If you want "pigheaded opposition" from me, try badmouthing Hendrix.
And for the record, there are a lot of people who subsist entirely on garbage. There's actually a lot of perfectly good food that can be found in dumpsters, as long as it doesn't sit in them for too long -- and that's not counting the still-wrapped "expired" stuff you can find from supermarket dumpsters.
