GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
apparently there biggest event ever, other than launching, but they're being very coy so its up to us to speculate on what it might be:
http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/
"expect the unexcelled"
to me that means Deus Ex, or possibly Planescape Torment/System Shock 2.

Hoping for Baldur's Gate series along with Shogun: Total War up to an including Medieval: Total War Viking Invasion.

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I would kill for MTW (with support for my new-ish nVidia card, that's the only thing stopping me from playing it now).
TIE Fighter would be nice but I imagine Lucasarts would want to control that.
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I don't care how unlikely it is, I want it to be Day of the Tentacle. But I guess Planescape or Baldur's Gate would do nicely.

That's a lofty claim. I wonder if they can live up to it?

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
It won't be TIE Fighter, Lucasarts have been re-releasing their own games and wouldn't contract out for that. Given GOG's tendency to add entire catalogs at once, my money's on the full Infinity Engine set.

believe me, i would love those games, but can either of them claim the title of never having been excelled in 'popular' opinion?

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
So we'll get Half Life? or Unreal? Halo? World of Warcraft? The Sims? :laugh4:
Hmm, StarCraft? Some C&C game? Medal of Honor? Call of Duty?
Just saying strategy and RPG aren't the only genres with popular games. :sweatdrop:

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I did some searching, and apparently GOG signed a deal with a large publisher last year, and this announcement is likely going to be the release of that publisher's back catalog. So, the question would be which publisher...

most of those have been excelled, if only by their sequels.
it is axiomatic that:
planescape has the best story EVA!
deus ex is the best action adventure EVA!
SS2 is the other best action adventure EVA!
so i think it will be something akin to that. :)

Basically every game has been "excelled" in popular opinion - Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest entertainment launch ever. Even if you break it down by genre there are plenty of newer games that meet at least some forms of "best" in terms of public opinions. If you mean "unexcelled" in terms of grumpy games reviewers with long memories older games might have a shot, but that just puts Shoggy or MTW back into play.

i mean what it says; "expect the unexcelled"
which tells me that they are talking about classics that are still held up as games which retain their status today because that in which they excelled is still considered to be a benchmark in popular gaming culture.
which is why i lean towards games like:
Deus Ex (personally think is super duper awesome) because popular culture says this is the mutts nuts
System Shock 2 (never played) because popular culture says this is the mutts nuts
Planescape Torment (never played) because popular culture says this is the mutts nuts
possibly Baldurs Gate (personally think is awesome) but it has arguably been excelled in popular culture
but probably not a game like:
Medieval Total War (personally think is super duper awesome) because it has been excelled in popular culture
Operation Flahpoint (personally think is super duper awesome) because it has been excelled in popular culture

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I think a lot of us are hoping that it's PS:T, simply because that game NEEDS the GOG treatment. The OOB version is horribly buggy and unstable. A proper stable version with higher resolution would be a godsend.
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
"Expect the unexcelled" is such strange wording that I wonder if it is a quote. Unexcelled is far from a commonly used English word, and in this context there are better ways to house 'never been bettered'.

Go to this thread, click the link I posted, and get to work. Increased resolutions, fixed bugs, restored material, a few optional tweaks - it's well worth it for Torment fans.

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
GOG is putting up hints on twitter.
First Hint: "The return of incredible karmic awareness."
Sounds like PS:T to me.

On one hand that's you opinion and on the other hand I just didn't want you to get disappointed. ~;)

Did GOG ever increase the resolution or other properties of games they released? :inquisitive:
I thought they just pack them into a wrapper that makes them run on modern systems but in the resolution and with the properties they were released with.

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
Someone on the GOG forums noticed that the first letters of "The return of incredible karmic awareness" spell Troika. So, looks like Arcanum, VtM: Bloodlines, and ToEE.
Interestingly, Troika IP is owned by Activision now, and Activision are partnered with Blizzard. That would indicate that GOG had signed a deal with Activision/Blizzard, which would indeed be huge news. Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, etc.? Plus the Activision catalog?
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
The Activision catalog would include MTW!
@ Furunculus - I get the gist of what you're saying, but I'm just wondering to what degree those are all still considered benchmarks. Maybe I'm just less aware of the RPG side of things and how those are considered.

it's really not, (my opinion is in the brackets), popular gaming culture really does laud those games. :)

VtM Bloodlines would be another example of a timeless classic for story telling reasons.

Shogun maybe. I think MTW is a little bit too "new".

OK, now you got me. I haven't been excited about anything PC gaming related in ages, the Mechwarrior reboot has got my hopes up but that's it.
THIS has me excited.

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
another clue:
http://twitter.com/GOGcom/status/8231191212
"They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully."
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
That one adds up onto PS:T.
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I read it as Activision/Blizzard, since it's two companies that joined together.

"Where history overlaps with the present time."

assassins creed 1................

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I'd love to see VtM:Bloodlines get the GOG treatment. I've wanted to replay it several times, but the game is crashtastic.

Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
Another clue: A messenger is not named for a soldier, but precedes one.
These are giving me headaches now, so I'll just wait for the announcement tomorrow.
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
Friend of mine thinks it could be Sierra.
If its a publisher I'm really hoping for Activision, so I can get Heavy Gear & Mechwarrior games they had.
-
Re: GOG are gearing up for a big event - time to speculate.........
I have a hideously poor background with non-FPS pre-2000 games, so I don't think that I'll be able to handle these riddles. I guess I can wait. :juggle2:
