Re: What other games do you play?
RTW only represents a small portion of my gaming. lets see... I play Hearts of Iron 2, Victoria, HL2, BF2, GTA:SA...and many many more. I actually think MTW still represents the largest bracket of my gaming time for the last 2 years ~:handball:

Re: What other games do you play?
1. Now I am playing Vampires the Masquerade: Bloodlines;
2. This topic is more suited to the Arena forum.

Very true. ~:)
Anyway, at the moment aside from playing Rome most of the time I play a lot of FPS's. My favourite among these being Far Cry, Battlefield 2 (which I am unable to play online), Doom 3 etc.
I also recently completed Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
All brilliant games ~

Re: What other games do you play?
WWII On Line , which is easily the hardest digital PVP there is {they release more patches than the ACME patch company ~ } , and is ubercool . A hell of a lot of TW fans in WWIIOL .
Neverwinter nights even though I'm not a geek . ~;)
Il2 {and spawn thereof : Pacific Fighters} which is a great WWII air combat sim .

Re: What other games do you play?
Mostly TBS games, like Civ3.
Sometimes RTS games, but just for campaign play, no MP (like WC3). Can't stand clickfest.
FPS games to relax my brain (FarCry, HL2, Doom3, Painkiller).
Played tactical games awile ago (like Jagged Aliiance 2 or Fallout tactics).
I like non-action orineted RPGs alot too (like BG, NWN, Fallout, ToEE).
P.S.
PC forever!
Can't stand consoles...

Re: What other games do you play?
I am currently addicted to Mount & Blade, but still play MTW-VI, when BI gets on the shelf I will buy it and play RTW again, for RP I play DragonRealms.

Just kidding, I recognize that quality takes time. How are the efforts at breaking into the AI code going? :smash:
CA lurkers please note, I am not on the EB team. Those fine individuals would never under any circumstances try something like that. Again, just kidding.
No really, I just made it up. I have heard nothing of the kind.
Why won't you believe me?!!!

Re: What other games do you play?
Other games? There are other games? I thought there was only Total War.........
-
Re: What other games do you play?
FPS's for a quick and easy gaming-session that doesn't require much thinking and is thus quite relaxing on the mind. Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Counterstrike: Condition Zero are the FPS's I frequently play. Battlefield 2 runs to heavy on my machine causing long loading times, CTD's and hard to hit targets due to poor framerate. Perhaps when I buy myself a new PC I might be able to enjoy it. Or if the new ATI drivers make it playable enough to be enjoyable. Waiting 2-5min for joining a game is just annoying if you want to get in to the action fast.
Occasionally Homeworld 2, Neverwinter Nights: HotU, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and some other need-to-finish games.

Re: What other games do you play?
IL-2 Sturmovik and Silent Hunter III, lately. There's a story involved.
I went away for months on a job assignment and darn near played nothing for all those months.
Before I got back, my computer suffered a catastrophic hard drive failure.
Got the old PC and gave it to one of my kids. Bought a new computer -- and found that I could play IL-2 and related games very smoothly. It's a lot more fun to shoot down airplanes when they don't skip around right when you're about to pull the trigger.
Started to reinstall my other games, and replayed a bunch of my old favorites on the new machine. I'd forgotten how much fun "Jedi Outcast" was. It's especially fun when you have a new gaming mouse where you can vary the speed: Very fast for lightsaber battles, medium for most things, super slow fine tuning for sniper shots, etc. Add a couple of more keys on the mouse for more functions at your fingertips. It was great. I'd highly recommend such a mouse. Mine was the latest one by Logitech, the MX 510, I think.
Well, then I played "Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic" again, several times in a row. It takes 40 hours to complete that game with all it's side quests, even if you know where you're going. I even played a little M:TW. Somehow, it just seems wrong not to have a completed campaign of Medieval on my hard drive.
Then I tried "Silent Hunter III," the U-Boat sim. Now that's a demanding game. It requires great patience. Most of your time is spent cruising around, trying to find a target. Once you finally find something, hitting it is still a challenge. All your effort can go for nothing if you don't line things up right.
A lot of you younger players would be really well served to get some older games. I found that Windows XP is being updated all the time. An old flight sim I have, "Mig Alley," hadn't worked in years. It works now.
For less money than you'd spend going to a movie and buying popcorn, you can get some truly great games, either used or in the bargain bins.

Try the Real U-Boat mod for SH3. I really like playing the campaign using this mod, and if you also get the mod switcher at that site, you can easily enable or disable the mod. Here is a post discussing the latest version, v1.43 , of the mod.

Re: What other games do you play?
The other two I'm playing at the moment are Silent Hunter III, and World of Warcraft (because my girlfriend is addicted... it's the one game we can play together).
I had a similar experience to Doug-Thompson's; I upgraded a few months back to a hot new machine that could suddenly run things sooooo much better than the 4-year old computer that had been limping along with just video card upgrades. With the new box I was able to try a few recent games like Far Cry, that I hadn't been able to run on the old computer. I also got Pacific Fighters, and it was fun flying with butter-smooth frame rates, for once. But that didn't last long. I've settled into a groove now where I'm alternating between SHIII and RTW as my "intellectually challenging/solo" games, and WoW for my "run around killing stuff" social gaming with other people.

One thing I never knew about Seamus, and that I still wish I didn't: He's schizophrenic :-P
I would like to announce that at last, I am on the EB team! YAY! Though currently still trying to figure out what it is I'm supposed to do...

Thanks, interesting to hear, I've held off buying XP for the very reason that I have a bunch of old games I still like to play.

Yeah, most of my games come from the bargain bin. You'd be nuts to pay for a full price game, unless it's something really special that you must have right NOW.
I thought RTW was going to be such a game. Being in a hurry to get a game almost always turns out to be a mistake :embarassed:

I have two games in the Panzer General series, Panzer General 3D and the sequel to that, Scorched Earth.
I've just been playing Scorched Earth again in the last few days. I was having great fun in the Guderian scenario with the difficulty cranked up to 167, but then last night I was fiddling with the multiplayer options out of curiosity and somehow it corrupted my SP campaign. Now it quits with a "DDHelp has performed an illegal operation" message :embarassed:
Scorched Earth BTW is quite a bit harder than PZ3D. The Russian units are quite overrated compared to the German which is a bit disappointing. And the fighting seems to be weighted strongly in favour of the AI player. A typical example - I had a captured T34 entrenched which was attacked by another, unentrenched T34. I should have come off best but instead I took only TWO points off the enemy T34 with two shots while he took at least SIX off mine. Ridiculous. PZ3D was better balanced.
I don't know if you've played either of these two games, but as I understand it the main difference between them and the earlier games is that in the later ones, the commanders are separate from the equipment, which has all sorts of advantages.
If you haven't played these titles and you try one, it's worth knowing that winning a major victory gives you an extra unit slot for your next battle.

Re: What other games do you play?
I've got Peoples General which uses the PG3D engine, but not really got into it yet (was given it).
I played the original PG and Allied General on my PS back in the day :charge:
Simon Appleton is a bit of buff on the PG series IIRC

Re: What other games do you play?
In addition to RTW I play battlefield 2, which I just bought. But that aint helping me at all!!! I play few times but then I must get back to RTW. I'ts just so damn good :charge:

Re: What other games do you play?

Thanks for the mod suggestion on SHIII. I'll check it out.

I have games as old as "Total Annihilation" that work on Windows XP now.
Some games have very dedicated fan bases that have developed workarounds for their games. "Red Baron 3D," for instance, has a problem with the sound that was solved by some very devoted fans. If I can't get the "compatibility wizard" in XP to fix the problem, I google for "[game title] xp". I'll quickly get work-arounds from fans. That saved "Clive Barker's Undying" for me. Also, some games have been patched since XP came out.
I've only sold to the used game store once, and now I regret doing that. I sold "Close Combat: The Russian Front" after I absolutely could not get it to run on XP. Now I wonder if it would work.

That's very true. Any game, no matter how good it is, is headed for the bargain bin. Unless it's a million-seller or something from Matrix Games, its headed for the bargain bin within a matter of months, sometimes weeks.
I paid full price for Silent Hunter III, RTW and others. However, if there's a game I'm interested in and can't pay full price for, I'll wait and cruise the bargain bins and used game stores. "The Operative: No One Lives Forever" was great, and that was a bargain. Ditto for "Mafia."

Well, graphics is a part of gameplay. I don`t like games that have bad graphics for their time.

Right now, am I not playing any game at all, really, but I`m eager to get my hands on GTA: SA.

Yeah, Simon has good taste in games. He likes all the same ones I do ~;)
I'd recommend both PG3D and Scorched Earth as budget titles. You definitely get your money's worth. It's quite fun promoting your leaders into uber-killers over the course of a campaign ~:)
