Games you miss and want back
Just recently i got thinking about games that i wish were still around today. Why? I reinstalled my old favourite, Tribes 2. Tribes 2 was the first online game i ever played, and i played it obsessively for 3 years. My puberty consisted of 5 hours a night on Tribes 2. I got it in February 2002, and only uninstalled it and finally stopped playing about half a year ago. Then, this weekend, i thought i'd give it a go again. So, i installed, applied the patch and a fix to make it bypass the long-since broken Sierra update program, only to my horror to find a problem with the master server when i tried logging in.
Turns out that just a week or two beforehand on 18th August, the master servers had been finally killed, and Tribes 2 was no more. All i had left was the shoddy 'sequel', Tribes Vengeance, which many fans regard as the nail in the coffin of the series.
I wish that maybe some company would realise the greatness of T2 and remake it just as it was, only with today's graphics. No fancy additions to the game, no taking away from it, no adding to it so that it's 'the best experience ever', just the same old T2 but with nice graphics.
Sadly, i doubt this will ever happen. When it was released, T2 was never really that popular. It was ahead of its time, released in an era when people preferred the chaotic idiocy of Quake and Unreal Tournament, rather than the well planned games of Tribes. Games companies these days, being interested only in profit rather than innovation, would want nothing to do with a game that was supposedly a 'flop'.
Anyone else have any games they wish would be remade, but no they won't ever be, and are now lost in time?

Castles (Interplay). Yeah, Stronghold kind of fills the same niche, but it just wasn't as good IMO.
Battle Isle series - Good old hex-based strategy gaming with futuristic units. Hex gaming is a dying genre, unless you want to play WW2 battles endlessly.
Monkey Island - We need more comedy games!
Dungeon Keeper - Being evil is fun. This name brand might be dead, but I suspect we'll see the idea reappear at some point though.

Re: Games you miss and want back
[t]ra[i]ding games with a little bit of fighting [Pirates!, Elite, Privateer...]
Monkey Island-ish games for humor
A 3-D Version of Uridium!!!!!!! [or Katakis or Blue Max]
As al ready mentioned in another threat: those very intense X-Com games...for the spooky flavour!
So start developing:whip: :whip: :whip:

FROGGER!!!!! :laugh4:
But I still have a soft spot for Warcraft 1 - that's the game that got me started on the long and frustrating road that ended in the final satisfaction of MTW, via Warcraft2, AoE, Homeworld, C&C, Praetorians etc etc.

Re: Games you miss and want back
Myth: The Fallen Lords from '98. My first MP game, other than MUDs. In some ways a precusor to the TW games, with a true 3D terrain engine, but far fewer units and each one controllable. Myth and Myth II are solid games if you see them in a bin somewhere, this is what Bungie did between Marathon and Halo.
I can't remember the name of it, but one of the early Earthsiege games where you moved your HERCs on a hex grid map. Probably better in memory than in actuality.

Quest For Glory Me missed alot!

Re: Games you miss and want back
Rogue Spear, the best multiplayer shooter ever made. To be good at this game you have to be good, quite unlike wannabe's like American Army, Counter Strike etc etc. Oh the memory's of falling enemies,
Me and my M14 (yes, I actually learned how to master it) and silenced H&K .40 (HA you PDW NOOBS I PISTOLWHIP YOU) against the world.
sigh...

Oh my god. Mechwarrior 3 also doesn't work worth a flip anymore. Damn Microsoft for destroying the Battletech games!

Re: Games you miss and want back
I have three--all from about 1998 and 99
Red Baron 3D---classic WW I flight sim with a dynamic campaign engine that has yet to be equaled
European Air War---IMHO the best WW II flight sim ever made. For dynamic game play and massive epic air battles in skies filled with bombers and their fighter escorts, I would still rank it as superior to IL-2---even though the latter has much better graphics and probably more accurate physics.
Panzer Commander---one of only about 3 WW II tank sims ever made and my all time favorite
I kept my previous 1.7 gighz rig with Windows ME just to play such older games, but I have a problem with all three of these.
Since Red Baron D was optimized to run with the now defunct Voodoo brand of graphics cards which used glide technology, the only way to get decent graphics is with a glide emulator. Unfortunately, I cannot get any of these to work with Windows ME.
European Air War has also been passed by technology. I have a Radeon card in this rig and even though it is several years old at some point the ATI drivers did something that eliminated the horizon fog in this game, so now it looks like I am flying on a big square table top--you can actually see the corners.
The game also will not run at all with most NVidia cards and their drivers after the 5XXX series. I may try to get an old card on E-bay or something just to play it again because I miss it so.
As for Panzer Commander, I have played it on occasion but the blocky antiquated graphics simply hurt my eyes now.
Ahh, the good old days!

Yes, it was good. Trying to replace it, I made the mistake of buying a variant (Test of Time?) that altered the unit graphics - trying to make them 3d, but just making them fuzzy - and worst of all cut out the advisors' cinematics ("No complaints noble leader!"). Those two rather cosmetic differences made it unplayable to me.
Have you tried Civ4? I find it offers everything Civ2 had and more (esp. better combat and great people). I despised Civ3.

Re: Games you miss and want back
Re: Mechwarrior 2&3, there are still several Mechwarrior 4 leagues going strong with massive user added content. NBT (http://www.netbattletech.com/) alters MW4 to be more like classic BT while MechWarrior Leagues (http://www.mechwarriorleagues.com/) uses Mektek's latest patch, with dozens of new mechs and a few elementals.
I could never get over the crazy netcode in MW3, but MW2 and the Ghost Bear expansion were spectacular solo games; better solo campaigns by far than the current Mercenaries. I desperately wish MS would do something with this franchise (And not on the Xbox, where complexity and customized loadouts are dirty words).

I hear you brother. I got that game as a present when I was 14 or something like that, played it 'till I was 18. Loved the game.

Re: Games you miss and want back
When our house got broken into back about 5 years ago, I lost some of my favourite games. The two I most want back are Need for Speed 2 and Need for Speed 3 Hot Pursuit, I used to always play those two games with my friends on split-screen. Though I don't know if I'd be able to stand playing those two games anymore.

Speaking of Bullfrog games, I think another Dungeon Keeper is in order too.

Re: Games you miss and want back
Dugeon Keeper 3? Definately.
I thought of one earlier, too. Dragonforce. No, not the band of metal lunatics. The Sega Saturn game, combining elements of Final Fantasy, Warhammer, and Tetris.

Lord of the Realm II.
From 1997, and a better campaign map than RTW, IMO.

Re: Games you miss and want back
I haven't played any game in months I guess.. The one is miss most is (obviously) STW. In particular, MP. I will keep missing that for a long time, I'm afraid. There's some others though.. All SP.
Anno1602
Worms Armageddon
Age Of Empires II
Armymen 2
C&C - Red Alert
and most of all(after STW though): Unreal Tournament! (the original)
:book: :balloon2:

Re: Games you miss and want back
Ah Anno 1602
If you still have the disk, or if you're willing to buy it for the 5 euro's it costs nowadays:
http://www.shareware.de/Windows/Game...ler_17366.html
The XP installer (may look German but the game will be simply the language your game has).

Re: Games you miss and want back
I wouldn't mind seeing some humorous games along the lines of the Space Quest series.
