In these uncertain times it is of great importance to pay proper attention to matters of Faith. A man ignores the heavens at his peril, but a leader ignores them at the peril of his Empire. It is therefore vital to create Places of Worship within your cities. However, due to the unfortunate inability of the construction browser to display the higher levels of Temples, it is not clear which godhead will give the most benefit in the long term. There are two ways in which a far-sighted leader can obtain this necessary information. One is to send an envoy to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The Pythoness will then inform your emissary that you should build a Temple to Apollo. A big one. With perfect decorations. And if you don’t worship Apollo, you’d better start doing so quickly. A less naïve leader, however, will simply consult this guide.
With this guide, I hope to provide the information that is unfortunately lacking in the in-game building browser: the bonuses provided by the Temples, particularly the higher levels. Both the format and the idea have been stolen from Sinner and his original R:TW Temple guide. Unlike the entities to which these Temples have been dedicated, I am only mortal, and some errors may have crept in. If you find one, please let me know.
A few notes to explain some of the features of this guide:
I have chosen to use the translated deity names instead of the original ones to increase recognisability.
Next to the deity’s name, the name of the building-line his or her Temples belong to is indicated. This is useful to see which bonuses you will get when you conquer that particular Temple from an opponent. If you conquer an enemy temple, you will receive the same bonuses from it as from a temple of your own from the same building-line. For example the Aedui Temple of Cernunnos and the Averni Temple of Sucellos both belong to the Temple-of-fun building-line, despite neither Godhead being known for his sense of humour. If the Aedui were to conquer a Temple of Sucellos, they would get the same bonuses as they would for a Temple of Cernunnos of equivalent level. As a general rule: if Temples are dedicated to the same deity (i.e. Zeus Olympos and Zeus Dodanna) they belong to the same building line. However, this does not always apply, for example with the Casse and Averni Temples of Sucellos.
There are five levels of every Temple line, but not everyone can build all levels. The Saka, the Sauromatae and the Sweboz can only build the first three levels; the Celtic factions, Lusotanians and Getai the first four. Generally, if a faction cannot build a certain level, it will receive no benefits from it when it conquers a Temple of this level.
Nor can every faction build all Temple lines. For example, the Sauromatae only have access to three: fertility, forge and fun. Again, if a faction conquers a town with a temple from a line they cannot build, they will receive no or only a small benefit from it.
Not all temple bonuses are equally useful. Both happiness and law bonuses improve public order with 5% per point, but law also decreases unrest and corruption. Loyalty appears to do nothing, so one can ignore these entries. Population growth and health bonuses increase population growth by 0,5% and give a +5% public order. Tax points give a measly +1% tax income and are effectively worthless. Trade bonuses are more useful, but don’t except to recoup temple construction costs quickly, especially if the town is small or doesn’t trade a lot. Experience points are straight forward. The effect of troop morale bonuses on the other hand is questioned: some say they affects soldiers defending the town rather than troops produced there.
A tabled version of this guide has been created by Mouzafphaerre. This version offers easier viewing, but is unfortunately not updated to EB 1.1. It can be downloaded in .pdf form here. For a changelog from EB 1.0 to EB 1.1, click the “read more” button.
Changed all deity names into translated form
Removed armour and weapon bonuses from Casse & Lusotanian temples
+2 instead of +1 law for Aedui/Averni shrine of battle (Teutatis)
+3 experience instead of +3 population growth and +3 trade for Sweboz temple of fun (Nerthõz)
Changed Makedonian temple of battle deity from Ares to Herakles; it now gives a combination of law, happiness and morale bonuses
+4 instead of +3 happiness for Makedonian temple of fertility (Hera)
+4 instead of +3 happiness for Pontic temple of fertility (Kybele)
Farming bonuses have been removed
For helping me with this guide, I’d like to thank Sinner, from whom I copied the idea and the format; Mouzafphaerre, who made the pdf version; jhhowell for explaining the bonuses to me; The General and Lysandros for corrections; and of course CA for creating the game and the EB team for making this fantastic mod.

5. Finally, there are several bonuses that have puzzled me. Most notably, I do not know how the loyalty bonus differs from the happiness one. Also, I am unsure what the difference is between weapon_simple and weapon_bladed. Any information on this would be appreciated.
Loyalty bonuses also decrease corruption (in addition to increasing public order.) Its very helpful if you have a large empire.
You should also note that tax bonuses are pretty much worthless, as +1 tax only translates into +1% tax income, ingame.

Ludens, I love you and this wonderful piece of work. should immediately be stickied!
It's a zipped PDF without the index links working. If you have Adobe Acrobat and can make a version with working links, please request the .doc file by email.

No, you're thinking of law.
Ludens, one way that loyalty differs from happiness is that it does not affect public order. This was a common problem in 0.8 and hasn't been completely fixed in 1.0 (though it's better now). It was more common to see on unique buildings, now it's just a handful of temples which you've identified. As far as I can tell in-game, the loyalty bonus does nothing whatsoever. It's possible that it's doing something subtle that doesn't show up in the settlement display, though. I haven't bothered doing a search & replace on my EDB to make them all happiness bonuses since it's easy enough adapt in-game - either build a new type of temple, or just suck up having a weaker temple (some of the large starting Marduk temples for AS, for example).
Many thanks for putting this guide together! :2thumbsup:

Thanks for the information jhhowell. I will add it when I next update the guide. Due to the Christmas holidays I've got a bit more time on my hands, so I may have a look at the temple-related traits and ancillaries as well. No promises, though.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
Great advice thanks.
Is there anywhere that tells of the effect on characters traits, I know temple of Ceres helps with the "Popularis" trait for the Romanii, and in vanilla Temples of Venus could lead to some very nasty de-bauched drunkenness etc.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
I've had a look at the relevant sections of the EB trait & trigger files, and gave up after seeing that in MS word they took 160 pages. There are all sorts of interactions between the temple type, faction, worshipper-of traits, the 6 main personality traits and several other traits as well. Perhaps there is a system in there, but I didn't have the time or energy to figure it out.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
very interesting thanks, i didnt know Ceres give a +4! trade bonus... im going to convert more of my temples to Ceres... also i dont understand what is the difference between Minerva and Iuppiter, is it good to build a temple of Minerva just only for gaining some specific traits? In fact the only difference is that Iuppiter give +2 law than Minerva, so i dont see any other use for the Min. Temple.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
They might have; at least some. I would check the German temples and the Casse & Lusotannan ones. The former because due to limitted levels of temples to be built the boni might've been bumped a bit; the latter two because they used to have armour/weapon upgrades. Dunno if they still have...

What's the point in building an huge minerva temple (+5,+3) while an huge iuppiter temple give +5,+5?
could be the traits given by minerva to the family members are better?

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
There is probably a difference in traits and ancillaries. They are all sorts of triggers for temple-type, personalty type, and so on. However, that does not necessarily mean the temples are "balanced". In fact, given the number of triggers I rather suspect they are not.

EB is all about historical accuracy, so they are most likely historical (in as far as we can know, 23 centuries on). Ceasar wasn't always right.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
Sorry, if this is an obvious question. I tried to search around for an answer to no avail.
I see the bonuses, but with regard to character traits/ancillaries that are generated. Most of the temples are self explanatory: battle / farming / governor (which I assume is management/tax).
What does fertility do? -- increase the chance of producing children?
The temples of forge and fun really stump me. What do each do? :help:

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
Those names are meaningless. They just indicate which line-of-buildings is used for this particular temple. For example, the Aedui temple of fun (Cernunnos) corresponds to the Averni temple of fun (Succellos), so if the Aedui conquer a temple of Succellos they will get the same bonuses, traits and ancillaries as for the corresponding level of the temple of Cernunnos. If they upgrade the conquered temple, it will turn into a temple of Cernunnos as well.

Re: Guide to Temples in Europa Barbarorum
Those are the internal names for the temples.
I think that they had a function in vanilla RTW (think, it is a long, long time since I played vanilla)
Temple of Fun = happiness bonus
Temple of Forge = armor or weapon bonus
But like Ludens said, they have no meaning in EB except determining which building slot is used.
