What's up with the Cohors Imperatoria/Evocata, and the post marian Centurion?

hallo, finally i was capable of watching the new legionaries, in EB1.0, i wasn't able cause in custom battle they weren't. But with 1.1 and the configuration program i can see them in custom battle.
I admit im delused. They are the same of that preview of some month ago about 1.0. Some one sayd that they were going to be adjusted, but i see no changement.
I think the members of the Team know how i like EB. So dont take me like a guy who want to attack etc.

my first shock was to see the new reformed centurion in the historical battle. I tryed, and i must say i tryed to like it, but it is completely out of EB style. It's plastic style, it seem coming our of that old plastic puppets, Playmobil, dont know if someone remember those toys.
Then i sayd, it cant be, so i went to play custom battle and tryed Cohors Evocata, and some Imperial Cohortes... same thing, totally "plastic feeling" , completely out of EB style, they seem a child toy, not ever talking of their "Huge Heads", again like Playmobil or Lego. And those faces... they seems a caricature (immense noses and subtile eyes, and a look of "macrocephali").

Now, what was bad with the Old Legionaries? They were great, and completely "IN" with the EB style.
I cant believe the new legionaries they are an improvement on the old ones, it cant be, i cant believe it.

So my question is, what's happened people?

The EB team is perfectly happy with the new romans who are far better than the old ones.

If you are not happy with it you have not obligation to play EB mod. And stop throwing insults we owe you nothing. Capisce ?

When is that screenshot from? Because today I was playing around with them and they seem to have been shrunk a little in size, so they are around the height of the Praetorians now, and look much more proportioned.

Could it be some sort of 'you need a clean install' issue?

hmm... i dont know, i just clicked on the configuration menu, then i choosed EB multi player, to activate the legionary in custom battle
I think i installed the thing well, i just started another custom battle to be sure.

Well they did receive a skeleton adjustment (shrinking it), so my guess is that something went wrong during installation. Check out an SVN copy from the 1.1. branch: those files should be IDENTICAL to your 1.1 install.

I´ve played some historical battles with the Romans, and the Legionaries seems fine to me, in fact they look better then in 1.0. So yeah, it´s probably something with your install.

None of the historical battles I could find had any praetorians. The new legions look nice, but Obelics is right, the praetorians are midgets (as are all other infantry units) compared to other imperial legions. It's definitely nothing with his install as it is the same on mine.

The Imperials are also giants compared to enemy soldiers. Look at them fighting those puny Getai. The size difference isn't huge, but it is certainly noticeable and somewhat disconcerting.

On a side note, I have to also agree with Obelics that they do seem to clash a bit aesthetically with other EB units. They look awesome by themselves, but they do look a little out of place, I think it's probably their faces. All in all, I'm amazed at the quality of 1.1 and the many incredible additions. Little things like this are bound to happen, and I know the EB team is focusing on getting EBII out there rather than fixing every little thing with 1.

You can always replace the new legionaries with the old ones. But yes it is a shame that the models have to be so...bloated, because the skins themselves are beautiful.

why not just switch skeletons-that way the praetorians and imperatorii have same skeleto-different skins?

Well, I think the unit skin AND model is beautiful, the problem(to me) is that they don't "match" other units.

But they're still awesome.

Just click the Multiplayer shortcut as opposed to the Singleplayer. I find that loads the multiplayer EDU which has nicely organized faction units.

i was referring to pre- 1.0 skins.
I haven't installed .081 anymore, but i still keep a copy of EB0.74

(the Imperial Cohors, have the Red Shield, the Evocata have the Cyan shield, and the Pretorians have the Blue shield):

Yeah, I thought we had fixed it - so I asked about in EBH and I was told that the guy who fixed them apparently never submitted his work. :embarassed:

Changing just skins between the files? (take 0.81 skins and replace the 1.1 skins with these) or maybe also add old models (.tga files)?

None of those (it's a model issue, not a skin one).

The best solution would be to go into descr_model_battle; do a search for your unit and see if the skeleton reads [something]big[something]. Remove that 'big' part and you ought to have a more or less shrunk legionaire. Not as good as actually modifying the *real* files, but that requires some skill.

Bad news there - they've normal-sized skeles.

Since the roman_infantry_cohorsreformata and roman_infantry_cohors_praetoriana are essentially the same model can't you just go in and copy over the roman_infantry_cohors_praetoriana cas files to the roman_infantry_cohorsreformata cas files? Wouldn't this give them the same frame and size?

It seems that in EB 0.81a the Evocati and Praetoriani shared the same model, while Imperial Legionaries had their own model; in EB 1.0 the Praetoriani have their own model, while Imperials and Evocati share the same model.
Names of the .tga files have been changed, so I can't tell if the "ebunit_Prome_new_unit_roman_CohorsPraetoriaAugustea_high.cas" from EB 0.81a is the same as "ebroman_infantry_cohors_praetoriana_prom_high.cas" from EB 1.0, but if so, then the "xprime" models used in new Imperials and Evocati are those that cause problems.
Thus I'm afraid there will be need to go back to the old ones...

BTW: does anybody know why the Evocati have NOT the "standard-bearer" officer in their unit?

Well, both Spendios and Obelics have done much much more than he has to make the mod better, so I don't see why he has anything to add to this at all.

Well, guys, no matter who has contributed how much to the great EB mod (which of course DOES matter at all, but not so much in THAT particular case), yet, however, it REALLY matters, how to solve this model/skin problem that appeared as already existing.
IMVHO the best solution would be to change the new (xprime) models into old (0.81) models and appropriately change the DMB and EDU files to implement these changes, and post it as a fix. 'cause these new models really do not like the "classical" EB models... and require corrections.
Or, the guy who made the new models, should submit corrected ones to be available for install as fix.

Anyway, for my own personal use I'll change these new models into old ones - these are at least quite proportional and look as real men, not the "giants".

The new look of Imperatoria and Evocata is excellent, but I also think it's slightly not "EB looking".

Darth Stalin, Would you be so kind to provide some sort of instructions as to how to replace the new imperatoria and evocata with the models from 0.81?

IMHO the simpliest way would be to copy appropriate sections of 'old' DMB into new DMB file, thus making the evocati and praetorians to share the same model, and then change the new EDU file in the same way - copying appropriate sections from 'old' file. I've provided the necessary code above, so there should be no problem with that.
The same applies to 'late Roman centurion', for which I've also provided the code setion.
Of course, you will also have to copy the old .tga and .cas files from 0.81a version into appropriate folders of 1.1 version. Target lines for folder you have to put these files into are shown in the code - that's the source from where the engine takes models and skins.
Unit cards can be left the same as in 1.1, but if not, copy them from 0.81a and that's all.

The best way of making changes is to use WinMerge or similar tool, and search for these 2 models and 3 units in DMB and EDU, respectively. Of course to do all of that you have to have EB 0.81a => you can unzip the installer with 7zip software, and take from that whatever you want.

That should be all.
I'm not a good instructor, I'm afraid, and all what I've searched/found is via my own trials and errors; so I also encourage You to make your own trials (and errors, maybe) to achieve required results. That's the best way to gather knowledge about EB files and their structure and connctions.

Heh, I rather meant I'm not good at writing the instructions like "open folder XYZ/drag out file 123/put into fiolder ABC" or sth similar.
I'm just too lazy for doing it... and don't have much time to do so. But when I have a little more time I always try to write some instructions that help other people find a way to solve their problem. I just learned that from reading a lot on this forum, TWCenter and similar Polish TW forum. I've also made my own mini-mod (unfinished, for personal use only, finally abandoned) on Hearts of Iron - CORE mod (began to add some new stuff and leaders fo Soviets) => had to abandon the project due to lack of time.
Anyway, I was just digging into some files for about 4-5 years, so all that little skill I have, has come out from trials and errors... and that's the best way of modding I ever know :D

BTW: it seems that the same process should be done for new Roman units in EB 1.1 => the First Cohort! As they probably use the postmarian legionary cohort and Augustan/Imperial legionary cohort models/soldiers with no model/skin changes, the same process should be made to them also.

The EB seems to be the most complex and wealthy RTW mod made so far; yet as in typical large projects there lamost inevitably must be some bugs/problems. EB is not free from such things. So far the bugfixing and response to the problems was quick and accurate; why not to do the same in this case?

@Gaivs: I'm sure you ment it as a joke, but on the internet, there is no way for people to discern tone of voice. That is why the words that you use are SO IMPORTANT. This is good for all forum goers to hear. Also keep in mind that often issues that fans bring up are based on misconception or simple mistakes. So EB members usually figure that if a fan posts a problem, there is a good chance that it is only apparent rather than real. As I said, tone of voice cannot be easily shown over the internet, so choosing your words carefully is key. Please take this as a friendly piece of advice, not me telling you what to do, but as someone who doesn't want to see anyone get hurt.

I hope that this helps. These forums give us an oppurtunity to show that we are more mature than many of the "kids" who surf the internet these days. Please take this oppurtunity and run with it.

Anyways, to turn back from the digression to the main course (?):

1) We thought the model had been fixed already; and indeed it had, yet the fix wcas never submitted by the artist who made it.

If one of our resident modellers would be so kind as to take a look at the files, the fix might be out before you know it. (From what I understood it involved very little work for someone with the right tools.)

2) So at this point the model is still too large.

3) Enthusiasm among the modelling & skinning department to work on EB1 is currently somewhat low - they wanna toy with the 4 times as large textures for M2TW and all the other cool stuff. :grin:

4) So be forewarned: this is likely not going to be top priority.

5) If it really bothers you: fire up a campaign as the Pahlava, Aedui, Arverni or anything with sufficiently brutal units to have a go at the Romani. Then you can have fun out of your frustration (if there was any?). :grin:

6) We very much value the work Obelics has done in helping us to polish, iron out bugs, etc. etc. this version of EB, and prior versions.

7) Spendios is very, very tired with people who want more and more and more and yet more for the Romani, and he isn't the only one. Keep in mind that 21 factions means, especially for a mod that tries to give other factions a fighting chance too, not every single Romani unit can be made in; nor that the Romani are top priority. Indeed: they get by far the most already in game, which makes them somewhat less of a priority than most other factions.

8) Do play as the other (non-Roman) factions too, it'll put things in perspective. (I know the OP did, how else come the Wasteland?)

9) Sorry but people need to realise (bad) jokes better be made very clear that they are in jest. We've just had way too many people poking at team members with frankly quite poor forms of humor.

10) Teasing on these boards is the sole privilege of those who make the mod & the auxilliaries. :grin: And yes, that's in jest. :wink:

OK, Tellos; anyway, I'm gonna mod the EB on ALX for myself (adding some 20 new models and unit - or replacing the existing models with others), I've also installed TWFanatic's Phalanx mod.
So maybe if I find a free time during the current week and there wil still be no 'official' fix, I think I can prepare sth like that - change the (already fixed in the latest fix!) DMB file and EDU file (but only for SP/campaign; this probably for both "vanilla EB" and TWFanatic's mod), with use of old 0.81a models and skins => that would not be a very hardo work, anyway.

But then, I have no experience in submitting anything anywhere; the prepared file/folder would be for DL but I don't know from where - I can mail it to someone able to upload it somewhere for DL by players willing to see 'correct' Romans.
And I do appreciate Your (i.e. whole EB team) work; yet I find it as my duty to the whole community to find solutions to problems in any case I think I can help to solve the problem with use of my skills, which, by no means, are not very high... but always to be used by all who need some help.

It was so. I downloaded 1.0 after a long time after it was relased. In my roman campaign im still with the camillian units. (never saw the legionary in action in 1.0, neither in CustomBattle, i just remembered the preview of some moth ago regarding 1.0)

Im not what can be called a Roman fanboy (but yes, i like the faction), my actual roman campaign started around the Roman General Skin. I just noticed he resemble so much (ok he is almost identical) to a famous Cartoon Hero of my past (Raul). That was enough to inspire me. Your theory is interesting but unfortunately there is a flaw. Without the people who "do the hard work" there can't be people like you who "enjoy to play". As such people from the second category should keep their insults and arrogant remarks for themselves.

1. I think the artists did a better job with the EB 1.0 Roman legionary models...the news models are nice (better than vanilla), but IMO the old ones are more detailed and they fit better with the rest of the army since they're not 7 foot tall.

However, the files corrected are the EDU files made by TW Fanatic; unfortunately I've overwritten original EB sp/mp EDU files with his work, so I couldn't correct them.
Anyone who wants original files in game corrected is asked to send me the EB sp EDU and EB mp EDU files on following email:

These files after correction shall be implemented into the fix, so everyone will be able to play corrected EB legionaries!

As only I manage to upload the fix on FileFrontl I'll provide appropriate link to let TWFanatic and Bovi submit corrected files as new Phalanxmod version and EB 1.1 fix, respectively.

I, from my side of "single" passionate of EB, I trust completely in this and i thank you, if i can add a suggestion, again from my side of an almost completely unable to make "computer things", is pheraphs to make them to appear i dont know, pheraps more "grunged"? for example trying to dirty a bit their shield, or their armour, or to adjust a bit their faces. I know all this things take some time, and your post was enough for me to completely re-take back hight my fiducial, for what it may count. No, it is a source for an unmodded EB 1.1 EDU (save for the Bruttian voices).

@Obelics:
the link I've provided is just what You're asking for - temporary fix that replaces new 1.0/1.1 skins with 0.81 skins for Evocati and Augustan Legionaries.
However, this version so far contains only files modded by TWFanatci; as only I get original EB EDU files (single player and multiplayer) I'll add these to upload.

mucky, the 0.74 are the same of the 0.81 (but i deleted 0.81 as i got the 1.0 and 1.1) so the 0.81 legionary look as the 0.74, but with the bonus of the centurion and signifer, in 0.74 there were vanilla centurion and signifer.

So dont worry, as SShadow has given the unmodded 0.81 files to DStalin, i think it will be what you desire.

I loaded the EB vanilla fix from Darth (many thanks by the way) and evocatae and praetorians are great but the imperatoria helmet looks wrong. The gallic helmet is gold but dull (not shiny like in Obelics picture in this post) and the back section is black. What did I do wrong? Thanks again.:oops:

I think the texture for the imperatoria legionary in 0.81 had the Montefortino helmet instead of the Gallic helmet. I think what we need is the texture for the model with the Gallic helmet (as shown in Obelics picture within this thread). Can anyone help? I'll do the mod and try to upload it if someone tells me how (to do the upload). Thanks.
