OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/42851
Hi guys,
I am pleased to report that our official Empire: Total War demo will be available via Steam from 4pm GMT on Friday 20th February.
Giving you a taste of the epic engagements that you'll be experiencing from 3rd March, the demo will take you through the basics of land and naval command and then unleash you in two historical battles!
You will get to play as the mighty British Empire as they do battle against the Americans in the 'Battle of Brandywine Creek' and then take on the French Navy in the 'Battle of Lagos'...
Battle of Brandywine Creek
After landing from his transport ships on the American coast, Major-General Sir William Howe led the British troops eastwards, with the intention of capturing Philadelphia.
In preparation, American General George Washington readied most of his units to defend from this frontal assault around the narrow crossing of Chad's Ford on the Brandywine. The Creek flows through the countryside of Pennsylvania, enveloped by sheer cliffs and heavily wooded hills on both sides. Safe in the knowledge the fast flowing creek could not easily be crossed; Washington was confident of holding his position.
However, more detailed surveillance of the terrain would suggest that alternative routes could turn the battle in the favour of the British.
Battle of Lagos
As so often in 18th Century warfare, French plans to invade England during the Seven Years War were reliant on ships from the naval base at Toulouse joining ships from Brest. The British had both ports blockaded, and the French had to wait for one of the blockading fleets to withdraw for re-supply before attempting any rendezvous.
The opportunity came when the British fleet under Admiral Boscawen at Toulon withdrew to Gibraltar. The French under Jean-François de la Clue-Sabran left Toulon, and began to make their way towards Brest. Passing the Straits of Gibraltar, the French were spotted by Boscawen's lookout ships.
Giving chase, Boscawen's fleet was only slightly larger than the French force, and caught up with them off the coast of Portugal where battle was joined. Take control of the British and defeat the French to end the invasion threat to Britain.
We hope that you enjoy playing our demo, which will give you a small taste of Empire: Total War action in preparation to leading your own empire to victory in March!
Thanks,
Mark O'Connell

Well in a few hours I can play DoW2. Looks like I wont spend my money on Empire until April or later.
-
Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
Polemists and the rest of you who are not registered at Steam had better do so before the download time…
Any increase in speed will pay off later.
-
Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
I may not know much about steam but I don’t see how the speed will be increased if we install now instead of last minute.

Because of the time it takes to get your account and passwords set up.:idea2:
To go with that, it may be a bit slow when ¾ of the world tries to do the same thing at once.
:laugh4:

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
w00t, thats 9AM my time and I just happen to have tomorrow off work! Wonder what I'll be doing Friday afternoon?
As far as download times goes, isn't Steam partially p2p? So it shouldn't be too bad.
-
Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
Polemists is going to think his birthday has come early. :laugh4: This all seems to be good to be true, the demo finally being released. I'm getting worried something unforseen will prevent me from playing it.

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
The Battle of Brandywine Creek!? That was fought about 10 miles from where I live. Excellent. This demo release is going to throw a monkey wrench in my plans to prepare the house for company this weekend...I'll manage somehow. I'm curious to see how well it performs on my aging PC.
Odd, but up until this announcement I was only following the development of this game (very) casually. Now I'm sitting here typing this and my heart is almost pounding...

I have to ask because you live near a place known as Brandywine Creek. Are you a hobbit? Or do you happen to know any Hobbits? Or is the name just a Tolkien-esque coincidence?
I hope to see a demo of England vs. the forces of Hobbiton. :laugh4:
Also this post was meant purely in jest, and not designed to offend. :2thumbsup:

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date

Nah don't worry about Steam getting borked when we all try to download it. I felt the same thing about when HL2 was first released but it went smooth as butter for most people. Their servers were beefed up a huge amount since HL2 was one of the most anticipated games ever. There's only a fraction of a playerbase for Total War so no worries. :2thumbsup:

I've just been reading about the battle here - http://www.britishbattles.com/brandywine.htm
If the battle follows the original we might even see Ferguson’s Riflemen in the demo
The British had a "two stack" army and used one to pin Washington frontally while the other marched round and performed a classic flanking manoevre. So perhaps we might have a reinforcement stack in the demo, and see for ourselves how the system works ...

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
GaH! my laptop can't handle it. I will probably have to wait till august to get a new computer :wall:
Someone please upload a video or something to youtube.
-
Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date

Now seriously, in the next elections vote for someone who opens up your internet or whatever so you finally get unlimited flatrates in Australia, like the rest of the developed world has had for years now.

Me, a hobbit? No, nor do I know any hobbits. If you'd like, I can ask some of my friends tomorrow when we meet for elevensies in Buckland, er, I mean Bucks County. :sweatdrop:

Ah yes, the Battle at the BrandyWine. Major Ferguson had a chance to shoot a prominent Rebel Officer who was accompanied by another officer in distinctive hussar dress, Washington & Count Pulaski, but didn't think it sporting to shoot a man in the back so declined to take the shot that would have changed history....remember folks, sometimes nice guys finish last. Glad the demo is out to keep us occupied till March. Last one to download the demo is a stinkin' provincial...~;p

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
Hrm...
Interesting. I shall try it. Hopefully Steam doesn't perish. :skull:

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
So, how exactly do we register for Steam?

Do you have a firstborn to hand over? Otherwise the paperwork for your future firstborn is a pain.

Nah, man. I already gave him up for the EB Tavern. I signed him over in his own blood.
But seriously, just type Steam in google, it's the first site that pops up. You should see, quite visibly, a little button that says you can download Steam for free on its main page. Do that. You'll download an installer. Run the installer, which will both install Steam on your computer and get you registered.
That was easy.

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
I refuse to fight the great and mighty and wonderful and perfect United States! I will only play the naval engagement...
-
Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
Yes!!!!!!!! And it's so great that it is from the British side. Usually all the videogames are from the American side and it gets boring.
Can't wait to see Branduin Creek in the Fourth Age of Men!
Request Special Forces unit in the demo:

Upgraded with blacksmith:

With silver/gold chevrons

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
Hah! Take that George Washington! :laugh4:
I don't mind fighting for King and Country, and I'm an American! I'm glad I only have a.m classes tomorrow, I'll be out in time to download the demo with the masses and play it to death, then give my thoughts.
Also Greg, I always had a feeling you were decidedly Tookish, now it all makes sense! :dizzy2:

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
He'll feel so left behind. Poor Polemists. All his hard labour resulted in this, the last bite of a rotten apple core eaten to death by his former followers.
On a happier note, the demo is out in 6 hours and 27 minutes. God wills it!

Re: OFFICIAL-Demo Release Date
