EB's Removed Units (Nostalgia thread, not "how to get them back")

Is there any place to see names, descriptions and pics of all the units removed from EB over the different versions? The Yuezhi units, those German guys with the 2 handed axes "who were trained to run alongside the cavalry as shock troops" or something like that from v .8 or so (the pic of them still pops up on the main EB page sometimes)? Just wondering for the sake of nostalgia, as this mod easily ranks as a favorite game of all time for me, and I'd like to see which units I've either forgotten or missed entirely, as I didn't find EB til it was v 0.7 something or so.

Why were they taken out?

I'm guessing the Corinthian Hoplites were anachronistic, though I'd have liked to have them in my army. That is, if my assumption is correct and they're still wearing the Corinthian Helmet and otherwise equipped like the Classic Greek Hoplites of Marathon, for example.

Were they removed for Saba units?

Maybe I'm just overly caffeinated at the moment, but I'm thinking of downloading all the old EB versions I can find and installing them in a new RTW install to create a "best of the forgotten EB units" thread... You can still download some of the older versions here:

Not at all. The Corinthian hoplites have been reskinned, given a wider recruitment range and renamed classical hoplites. They also lost the phalanx ability.

No. There is still some unit space left.

Many German units were reconcepted (renamed, reskinned, restatted) because the new German FC was not satisfied with them. The Merjoz was the most notable casualty: two-handed axes apparently were a late Viking/Saxon development, so they really did not belong in EB.

Its a shame that they take out these good looking units...(damn i love 2 handed axes):shame:

Well, the "Install EB .7 something and make a forgotten unit shrine idea isn't going so well- I gave my old RTW game to a friend once I bought the TW Eras set, and I think I'm stuck with an instantly installed RTW 1.5 now, while old EB requires 1.2 to even run. I can't even get it to start, and patching 1.2 over the later install didn't work either. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the added units in this thread as well! I'd like to get a set of the unit pictures, names, and full descriptions, again for curiosity/nostalgia's sake, just not sure how to accomplish it yet...

I'm pretty sure one of the mods included in Lz3's modpack includes a revert back to the old cohort skin. I've got it installed but haven't made it anywhere near getting imperial units in my Roman campaign...

What i did was install the game into a empty folder so you have all the files. All the UI pics,textures and unit models were in a .pak file so i had to get a pak extractor to get at them (theres a few in the modding sections of the forums). The descriptions of the units will be in the text folder found in the EB directory, in a file called EXPORT_UNITS.txt.

It's a real pity the Aithiopikon Agema and the Merjoz didn't fit into the EB timeframe.

That's sad, this skin really look better (more realistic to me) then the overdecorated vanilla like skin (sorry to say that this way).

Bear in mind that Indian cataphract elephants would be like a Ferrari or Rolls Royce among Hellenistic monarchs: THE compensation for every shortcoming they might have had. They were like the crown jewels of the army. So one may assume that they were quite decorated to inspire awe in the enemy and to show off with one's treasury.

I agree. Plus the carpet thing looks sily to me.

Dosidataskeli. I probably the coolest unit in the game. They were a rather recent removal so people should still remember them.

Precisely.
And that would be also linked to the expression "a white lephant" (as in an expensive, showy but cumbersome nuisance) from the Indian emperors. Likewise, it would be logical to assume that the armoured elephants of the Hellenistic rulers would've been equally expensive and lavish.

you can get them back (there was a thread about it some weeks ago)

make a backup of "export_descr_buildings"

1 then open "export_descr_buildings"
2 go to search: and type in "dosidataskeli"
3 then 2 long line appear with dosidataskeli inside
4 move to the end of the lines and delete "and hidden_resource not_here"

and they are in...

don´t know about dubosaverlacica and ordmalica

Both the Iberian Dosidataskeli and their Goidelic equivalent were removed, as were the Goidelic Ordemalica (hammermen). I don't recall the Teuton mercs, but that section of the EB website hasn't been updated in a long time. Note for example the Bruttian infantry, which also never made it to the game (IIRC that skin got lost too).

The bruttian infantry didn't make it into the game? how do you mean that. I had armies with Pezoi Brettioi in my Arverni campaign :inquisitive:

I put them back in aswell as their Irish counterpart and the hammermen. even though they were possibly to few in number to be depicted as a unit. This is something ahistorical I can live with. And besides I hope they will be back in EBII, when you can avoid elite spamasation.

AFAIK the Yuezhi remained fairly unfinished and only had a few faction specific units made for them before they were removed, of those this is the only one that is not still in the game.

I don't think any of the units were removed due to unit limitations (EB still has a lot of unit slots left), mostly due to them being found to be ahistorical or in the wrong timeframe.

Specifically, one person campaigned to have the heavy Goidelic units removed because they were ahistorical, and the team's Celtic experts could not be contacted and had not left information about their sources. Unless these sources are found, the units will not make it to EB2. The Dosidataskeli are IIRC historical, but so rare that they would not have been around much.

I think you mean the one on the right side (never played Romans long enough to get them)? He is a great progress over the one on the left. For me the limbs and head are ok. And I would accept the woodiest limbs and most awful heads if they had no longer the wrong helmet and feminalia from the old left guy. :2thumbsup:

Playing the Lusotannan campaign I miss the super heavy ubar elite dosidataskeli a little bit. But the decision of the EB team to remove them was ok.

Darth Stalin made a mini mod to get the old imperial cohorts and evocati (sp) back look for it in the mods section i have it and love it

Has it been updated to 1.2? I know that their is an updated version of it in ||Lz3||s Mini Mod Pack but I only want to change the skins and I'm too lazy to search the files in the Mini Mod Pack, that are needed to change skin, unitcards and so on.

Considering these guys are based on a tapestry found at Sampula in the Tarim basin which is early 1st c. AD and shows strong affinities with depictions of figures on textiles from the Noin-Ula burials in Mongolia of the Hsiung-nu, this unit is very likely anachronistic, if not outright wrong in representation. The figure on the tapestry is very likely a Hsiung-nu noble. I can't identify what the shield is based on, but I've not found any information on shields from the EB timeframe in the Tarim basin.

The first one is the old evocata skin, can't remember what version they were taken out on maybe 1.0.

The second one is still in the game but you need the imperial reforms to get them.

I remember fighting them when I first started playing. The Xabukoz seem to have kept their spearmen, strangely. I guess it makes sense that they have swordsmen now tough, as "Xeruskoz" apparently means sword-like, according to the swordsmen's unit description.

To me it looks more like a variant of "Dacian" trousers. However, the shield looks a bit too dark-agey IMO.

That means they were replaced by the Cherusci swordsmen? I thought they were an additional unit...
I'm happy that the Xobugozez have kept their spearmen, btw. One of my favourite units, partly because of their beautiful shield design.
