If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Is there a single song that can define your taste in music... if so, what is it?

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Just for modern music... probably's NIN's March of the Pigs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCjpyPqwXNA
Violently aggressive, uncompromising, hate-the-world stuff... but still with enough of a note of self awareness to acknowledge that it's comically over the top, as the video makes clear. You've gotta be able to laugh at yourself even when you feel like tearing everything apart.

Michael Jackson's Thriller, hands down. 'nough said.

Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. :2thumbsup:

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Set to Fail by Lamb of God:
It's fast, it's thrashy, its complex without being inaccessible and it has this sort of swagger that is totally awesome.

Plantec - Kaz a Barch'h

My musical tastes are so eclectic that it's useless to seek for ONE song that could define them... but this one reflects my state of mind of today: I miss my motherland.

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
More than any other music, Soul Coughing's Ruby Vroom sums up both my musical tastes and my love of the absurd. Unfortunately Warner Music is on a jihad against everything online, so you can't really hear the music on YouTube or anyplace else, but the Amazon link I gave allows you to hear some brief samples. (I really, really hate the music labels.)
How can you not love an album when one of the songs has the chorus: "You get the ankles and I'll get the wrists—It's come down to this."
But the tip-top song from that album is "Blueeyed Devil," a beyond-funky ode to a door-to-door salesman with a heroin problem.
Seriously, if you dig on unusual music, you owe it to yourself to give Ruby Vroom a try.

Hey nice song there, NIN is one of my favorite bands. :2thumbsup:
This a really hard choice for me... but I guess If Only by Queens of the Stone Age.

Anyone know of a song that combines jazz, blues, rock, metal, classical, and a little funk together?

Definitely. Queens of the Stone Age has the blues, rock, metal, jazz influence in some of it's songs.. but you probably wanna look at Audioslave. Audioslave definitely has the blues, rock, I guess jazz influences. Definitely have the funk as well, I'm not sure about the metal influence or classical though in Audioslave.
Try:
Audioslave:
What You Are
Like a Stone
Shadow on the Sun
Getaway Car
(Revelations)
Revelations
Queens of the Stone Age:
(Queens of the Stone Age)
Give The Mule What He Wants
(Rated R)
Auto Pilot
The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret
In the Fade
(Songs for the Deaf)
No One Knows
Gonna Leave You
(Lullabies to Paralyze)
Burn the Witch (definitely has the jazz, blues, and metal)
In My Head
Little Sister
(Era Vulgaris)
Make it wit Chu
Into the Hollow
Audioslave has the funk that Queens don't have, and Queens has the metal that Audioslave doesn't have. I think they're a very good match for what you're look for. Listen to all these songs, you're bound to like at least three of 'em.

Lord Winter: Interesting band. I like the music and the vocoder bits but the inclusion of death metal vocals kind of ruins it for me. I've never been fond of the style, except for Lee Dorian's funderal croak on Cathedral's first album which isn't really the same thing.
Sorblade: Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard songs from both bands already though. I mildly dislike Audioslave. Like the QotSA a good bit but none of their songs "capture" my tastes in one go. It's hard to fit Handel in with Miles Davis in with Iron Maiden in with etc.

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
One song? Impossible, as I don't actually like musical genres, just bands and songs. Besides, my two favourite bands are bands that transcended any easy categorising, namely The Clash and The Kinks.
But I guess if I have to chose two songs from each to show what I like...
(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais - The Clash
Ghetto Defendant - The Clash
Shangri-La - The Kinks
Big Sky - The Kinks
I don't really like punk as a musical genre, yet I love The Clash early work, and I love punkbands Sham 69, Cock Sparrer and two Swedish punk bands. I don't like pop or even Britpop as a genre, yet I love the masters of that genre, the Kinks.
In the end, I just like quality music.
Edit: Argh, no I can't just mention so few songs! There are so many more, so many. Jimmy Jazz, Rudie Cann't Fail, Somebody Got Murdered, Village Green, Phenomenal Cat, Prince of the Punks, Sweet Lady Geneive, Alcohol, Know Your Rights, Garageland, Stay Free, Drug-stabbing Time, Mirror of Love, London Calling, Corner Soul, Up In Heaven (Not Only Here), Starstruck, Days, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Arthur, Art Lover, Waterloo Sunset, Strangers, Some Mother's Son, Sean Flynn, Victoria, Death is a Star, Straight to Hell, The Card Cheat, Death or Glory, All The Young Punks ahhhh I can't stop myself!!!

Anyway quite broad range of tastes here.
So hard to choose... one song... urgh... I'm torn... requires much deliberation. Much deliberation!

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Anything from Morcheeba, Massive Attack, the Kinks or Creedence Clearwater Revival or some funked-out Hendrix...
-
Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Tough question but probably State of the Union by Rise Against (Language warning). Loud and fast hardcore punk with a highly political motive. I had the incredible experience of being in the mosh pit during the song last night at their concert. I will never forget it.

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
The only stuff I have watched was Weird Al Yankovic. I did not just listen to him. I watched and listened to his music videos on YouTube. The guy is hilarious. I consider his songs as jokes, and his music defines my tastes. I do not like music that is made for listening and appreciating its musical qualities. So, here is my favourite and defining musical piece: White & Nerdy.

Not bad, just shows how incredibly simplistic rap music is.

I can understand that, it's a kind of acquired taste.
If you don't listen to them already you many want to try King Crimson. They're the closest I can think to of your Handel/Davis/Maiden mix. There's defiantly a strong Jazz influence running through there and the keyboard gives somewhat of classical feel. The metal parts a little more difficult but there's traces of some Sabbath-esque rifts in there.

Well yes, that is a part of the purpose of that "song". As I have mentioned before, I do not like music. But Weird Al is like comedy to me. His "music" is parody, so it is not true music; it is also relevant to me, a nerd, making it all the more amusing and enjoyable.
If you want to hear another rap parody, watch I'm on a Boat, if you have not already.

Hehe, my respect for the guy went up considerably. But he lived in the time before radio, phonograph, cassette/CD/MP3 Players, and Internet. Nowadays you do not see many people like me. In fact, in all my life, I have not met anyone who did not like music. What a waste music is. Waste of time, money and effort. An average US teenager listens to two hours of music a day (statistic from Time magazine).

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Well, music is one of our species-defining things. And if 99% of the population enjoys it, then it certainly isn't a waste of time. Otherwise you could call out practically anything as a waste of time.

As has been said before, it's impossible to have all this in one song. There are some that come close and can serve as indicators though.
just lovely:
Sia - Breathe Me
testosterone shot:
B. Springsteen - Candy's Room
I prefer this way over the original:
Them - It's all over now baby blue
approaching the classical stuff...
Lisa Gerard - Sanvean
and arriving there...
Barenboim conducting the CSO on Nimrod by Elgar
I will stop here. I'm about to get carried away...:dizzy2:

Why didn't I think of King Crimson to start with? Even though I don't like the beginning of the song, Providence has some classical elements, jazz improv, and nasty metal in there. Still missing a few things but if I can pick the entire "Starless and Bible Black" album, that should about cover everything.

Well, I think it is appropriate to start off with a true classic in recent musical history. This is from the first time Tubby and his two stooges joined forces, and honestly, I do not think they did a better rendition since.

I think that, rather than marrying Strike myself, I should marry you to him.* A good dose of Skynyrd every day for the rest of your life would do you some good.

Thought of another one... I know we should stick to one song because otherwise we'll end up posting half our repertoire, but this one was necessary.
Motorhead - Going to Brazil. My favorite Motorhead song; I really wish they were just a crazy rock-and-roll band instead of the quasi-thrash-metal band they've turned into, 'cause this is a kickass song.

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Lay me Low
http://video.google.com/videosearch?...um=4&ct=title#
Nothing really defines me, but Jeff Buckley has always had a striking effect one me because he seemed like just a guy and his guitar making his way, and died in a normal type accident void of the usual drugs and alcohol and rootin-tootin lifestyle of most musicians.
Here, he outdoes Leonard Cohen on his own song, not too common
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ
I think Billy Holiday did this one, or Nina Simone, anyway, his version is awesome

if you're looking for crazy rock-and-roll you can't go past AC/DC, especially the bon scott era

Re: If there was one song that defined your musical tastes what would it be?
Oh yeah: Tunak Tunak Tun. Well, to us/me it is sort of farcical, corny, and kitschy while to the Punjabi people it may actually constitute a good song. This basically says that my music tastes are not authentic and I merely look for something amusing rather than something that is actually a worthwhile piece of music.

Boring? Just cause they aren't as good as they were at their best doesn't mean they're not good, and there are very few bands today that are better than them, and even those are basically copies of AC/DC like airbourne for example(ok so i'm biased towards aussies but seriously, who does hard rock better :beam:)

One song? One. Christ. Has to be Echoes, pt. 2, pt. 3, pt. 4, by Pink Floyd.
Then again Hot Rails to Hell by Blue Oyster Cult also defines it. Good solid rock.

The Scott era was fun. It was just a bunch of guys screwing around and making awesome music. Now? No.
Psychonaut: Echoes in one place. Synchronized with the final part of 2001 to boot. :smoking:
As for me, I can't really name one. The closest thing for me is Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen. A true masterpiece.
