Στα βήματα της Ρώμης (To the Steps of Rome)--An Interactive Epieros AAR

Hello, and Welcome to Στα βήματα της Ρώμης(To the Steps of Rome). This is an interactive AAR and will work very much like Johnhughthom's Interactive AAR https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=115729. The current Faction leader (Me) will give reports of what has happened and you decide what to do next. All desicions will be yours, although I will handle minor construction (sewers, land clearance, etc.). You are the Council of Epieros. You will act just like a Senate. I need at least three people though before I start, so if you sign up, tell you're friends. To sign up just fill out the form at the bottom, and post it. Thanks and have fun.

Appearance:Nondescript

Background:A veteran of Pyrrhos' wars in Italy and Sicily he has had enough of fighting and wants to settle down and simply advise the current rulers. Seeing many of his friends killed by Romans has led to a pathological hatred of them and he will advocate policies which inflict harm on Rome no matter how illogical they are.

Name: Pergamos Abantes

Age: 36

Description: Average height and build. Could be considered handsome, but for a scar running down his cheek.

Background: His main goal is to further his own political advancement. Has recently served as a cavalry officer in Pyrrhos's Italian campaign. Fiercely loyal to Epeiros as a whole, and wants to see Epeiros become a superpower. Utterly ruthless, and coldly logical. Stopped serving in the military, largely because his men hated him.

Name: Aikibedes Demotrias

Age: 31

Appearance, Medium build, medium height, and a bit of swiftness about him.

Description: Fought many wars against Makedonia and Greece, he has a great hatred for the 2 factions and will most likely try to pursue war with them. Born of a rich and nobile family, he wishes to also pursue a political career anyway possible, even if he has to go back to being an officer of a unit of Pezhetaroi.

OK, nice to see an Epeiros Interactive AAR. Makes me nostalgic of the days of mine... Anyway, good luck with it and just a minor correction: Vassilis, Thanasis etc. are Modern Greek, christian names. Just thought I'd point that out. If you want some proper Ancient Greek names, you can search your EB folder for a text file entitled "names" IIRC.

Alrighty. Sorry 'bout the delay, with school and all it is hard to get on the computer. Anyway, Here we go.

First off, House Rules:
1. Only two armies to start with. For every 5 new settlements, a new army can be made under the councils discretion. Emergency force can be recruited though. Each army stays in service for ten years, and no units are retrained.
2. I will give treasury reports every season, but an official report will be only every two seasons.
3. Debates can be started, but no insulting other people.


Report 1:
I am sure you are all aware of the staring positions of Epieros, so I haven't included any screenies.

Pyrrhos walks in to the vaulted chamber and stares at the council members.

"Gentlemen of the senate. I now open the Council meeting. Word has reached me that there is some apprehension concerning the campaign against Makedon. The army is prepared to march, and all I need to do is give the order. But of course, your word is law, so what is the councils desicion? Should we march on Makedon? But you should also know that a Romani force is outside the gates of Taras, pillaging the countryside, and as you know we are at war. The small garrison is currently requesting reinforcements. What should be done. Demetrios' army is on standby as well, ready to attack the Makedonians, But the are also within striking distance of Thermom. Or perhaps, they are the force that can reinforce the Italian penisula. What does the council decide? Our current balance is 5000 mein."

"Thaliarchos Nikodemos, your hatred for the Romans is legendary, and justified. But you cannot let that hatred get in the way of common sense. Pella, the jewel of Makedonia, stands poised to fall before our forces. The capture of Makedonia's capital will be a terrible blow to her power and prestige. We should seize it immediately, and then turn our forces southwards to Demetrias. Taras must fend for itself for now.

Rest assured, Thaliarchos, you will have your revenge. The Romans will be dealt with soon. But now we must focus on fighting Makedonia."

Thaliarchos gives Pergamos a dismissive glance.

Pah, my hatred does not get in the way of common sense. The Makedones are already embroiled in a war with the Athenian/Spartan alliance, while Rome sits comfortably with no other real enemies. If we focus our attention on the Makedones we will allow Rome to get stronger and it will be more and more difficult to defeat them. We need to attack Rome NOW, waiting is not an option, the small band in Taras will not withstand an assault and if it falls dislodging the barbaroi will be a bloodbath. Pella can wait, Makedon can wait, Rome must die.

Well, the next report will come tommorrow, giving the council time to go over things.

Pergamos returns Thaliarchos' glance with a cold stare.

"You continue to be ruled by your emotions, rather than logic. Rome has to deal with traitors in Rhegion, as well as savage Celts to the north. Taras will not fall as easily as you think. We have a superb opportunity to defeat Makedonia, and it's one we should not pass up. How long do you think the Spartans and Athenians will last against Makedonia unless we help them? And right now, the Romans are well prepared to defend against an attack. Or have you forgotten Beneventum?

If we defeat the Makedons, however, Epeiros' economy will boom, and we should have more than enough resources to pursue a war with Rome. If you feel Taras is in too much danger- personally, I think it can likely hold out- then a better solution would be negotiated a temporary truce with the Romans, until we can focus our undivided attention on them."

Pyrrhos rises from his chair to speak:

"Has anyone considered the possiblilty of a joint campaign? The war with makedon will indeed boost our economy, but as I know the Romani's battle formation, I believe that Taras won't hold against an attack. The Romani troops are of better quality than our own, and the outmanouver the Phalanx quite easily. If we ally ourselves with the Carthagians, maybe we can cooridinate a joint attack. Maybe we could send Demetrios' army to Taras, and plan a campaign while I lead the first army to Pella. But of course, the desicion is yours."

Pyrrhos sits, hoping he didn't insult the council with his suggestions.

Pergamos nods his assent.

"Your decision is wise, Basileus. It is not a reasonable compromise, Thaliarchos? Pyrrhos' army will take Pella while Demetrios' presence in Taras will prevent the Romans you seem to fear so much from becoming too strong. The Carthaginians are our enemies, however, and they have not forgotten the defeats inflicted on them in Sicily. I think they are unlikely to ally with us."

Thaliarchos stands looking puzzled.

Hmm, I am confused. Pyrrhos has spoken of allying with Carthage and Pergamos has spoken wisely. pinches himself am I dreaming? No. Hmm, in that case then I agree with Pergamos. If you believe taking on the Makedones is that important and that we can sustain a two front war I agree with the proposal. As for allying with Carthage, I can think of only one thing worse, allying with Rome. Rome must die

appearance:He was tall for a Hay (Armenian) but was of normal height for Hellenic people. Had black hair and dark green eyes. Was very muscular build.

Descreption: A mercenary general who has been fighting in many wars for 35 years now. The last 5 years he has been under the command of the Epieros kingdom and it's king now he was a member of the council. But he was still loyal to Hayastan and would help it where he could.

Hayk stands up and looks in the room.

"I believe right now we should concentrate and conquer a part of Hellas before we concentrate our forces to fight against the Romans. I'm not saying leaving Taras to stand alone against Roman power. Send a defensive force to defend Taras till we can muster and true army and attack the Romans and destroy them. I know many of you wont agree with me but we don't need war on two fronts and the chance of our enemies join their forces against us. We can't use that right now."

"The council has spoken, The second army (I need more creative greek names) under Demetrios, sets sail for Taras and he will arrive within the year. We will need plan the campaign for next year. I will lead the first army to pella, and besiege the makedonian homeland. I shall report later on the matter of taking the city, but as I said, that is a matter for another day. We will attempt a joint campaign but we will be careful, and will choose our steps wisely. It may also be possible to take the free states in Rhegion"

Pyrrhos turns on the balls of his feet and steps out of the room.

272 BCE- Summer


Pyrrhos walks into the room, angry as ever.

"Gentlemen of the council, I have some news. Soon after we besieged the city of Pella, we were attacked. A relief force from Demetrias attacked us in a overwhelming attack. In the end they were utterly beaten, but the cost was high, we lost approxamatly 230 men, including nearly half our elephants. The loss off the elephants was strickly my fault, as I made the mistake of charging them at heavy skirmisher cavalry. I had thought, they were regular cavalry, and nearly all the elephant losses were in that charge. Good news is that a lot of the casualties were healed from thier wounds, and can partake in the taking of the city. A small portion of the enemy escape back to Pella, but they shall be but a small annoyance. Second army under Demetrios' command have just arrived on the Italic penninsula, but should arrive in the city by Fall. Now, We need to discuss taking the city of Pella. It has very few men left to defend it, so should we attack or starve them out? If we attack, should we produce siege weopons? Or are the Elephants enough? Also, we need to think about the campaign in Italy. We have signed a ceasefire with Carthage, so if they declare war on the Romani, we may find an ally. Or have your thoughts, on a double campaign changed? Anyway, I leave floor open to you men of the Council."

Pyrrhos walks over to his seat and sits down.

"The loss of so many elephants is saddening, those will be difficult to replace. At least Pella lies at our mercy now, so strike immediately, using the remaining elephants to batter through the walls. And astonishingly enough, I find myself in agreement with Thaliarchos. I would do almost anything to defeat the Romans... except allying with Carthage."

Generally I just use the print screen button, they are then stored in a folder called TGAs in your Rome Total War folder. You need to turn Anti Aliasing off for this to work.

Yeah, but my computer can't veiw tga files. It opens a notepad document. How do I make it viewable?

Use a program like GIMP (free download, just google it) to change the files into JPEG format.

Thaliarchos Addresses Pyrrhos.

Sorry if I have seemed quiet, I have just been trying to work out how you were attacked by a relief force in your assault on Pella. Surely you knew such an event was likely if you waited? Anyway whats done is done, I guess the forces you killed in the battle will make the actual assault easier now, and Demetrias will be less defended when we move to take her. So I guess my view is obvious, take Pella now then move south to take the other Makedon holdings.
What of our other theatre of operations? How goes Demetrias' travels to Megale Hellas? Rome must die.

"It is good 2 know that our assault on Pella is working out, even though we did take many causuties, we can return for round two later this year. And I also wonder how our campaign is going in Megale Hellas. That is all."

272 Fall BCE


Greetings Gentilmen of the council. Nikesas Pellas!!! Pella is ours. The army was so weak after fighting outside their walls, that we took the city with practicly only our cavalry. Sit, all of you. I will tell you what happened:

As we assualted the walls, we pulled into position. The enemy reinforcements were deployed on the other corner of the battledfield and apparently hoped to reach the defenders in time.

I moved my Akontistai to the walls to rain javalins at the enemy, but by the time the walls were reached, the cowardly enemy was retreating to the town square. By now the Elephantais were halfway throught the wall.

While the Elephantais battered at the gates, the reinforcments general foolishly charge my infantry and was brutally massacared.

The General was killed by a warrior of mine named Lysanderian Kretikioi. He will be recieving honours, for his work. Meanwhile the elephantais had finished off most of the forces inside the settlement. I charged my cavalry to town square to finish of the the "rest" if one can call it that

With his death, we owned the city. The victory was abosolute, not one Makedonian slime made it back to his home.

At first, mild resistance was encountered so a large group of the resitors were deported to other cities.

Now that Pella is under our heel, what should be done next. Should we immediatly march on Demetrias? Or are the men of the council feeling that that isn't in our best intrest? Demetrios has yet to reach Taras, but he is camped about 30 miles from the city. He shall be there by later this fall. Ambrakia and Epidamnos have grown and will be needing new facilities, to accomidate the population.

What should be done, concerning a campaign in Italy? We have yet to discuss, if this is even a viable option. Well men of the council. What say you?

Aikibedes stands

"ALL HAIL EPIROS! What a great victory, my my lord Pyrrhos! (bows at the king) It is good that we have landed a sizable force to italy. But defending Taras is our only option. If we over extend ourselves, the romans will surely fall upon us and give us trouble. Not to mention that we have NO funds to add troops to any army. Let us focus on defeating Makedonia from our land. Demetrios should be our next target. What will you all say, my dear friends?"

Thaliarchos bows low.

Congratulations my Lord, a glorious victory. It seems your decision not to assault immediately was vindicated as you now had a much smaller garrison to overcome. As to what we do in Italy, I believe there is a Roman army at the gates of Taras? If indeed this is the case Demetrios should engage it, we cannot decide on our strategy in Megale Hellas until Taras is secure.

Lysandros bows

"Congradulations, a winner is you. We should definately move to attack the damned romans outside Taras."

Gogor Mamegonian walks in too the room and looks aroud to all the members of the council.

"I'm sorry that I've got to spoil this great day for you, but my father was killed by an assasin last night and that's why he wasn't here today. I caught the assasin when he was sneaking out of my fathers room and recognized him as the royal assasin of the Pontic Kingdom." and he trows the head of the assasin in the middle of the room. "I demand that my father's death is revenged."' He goes to his fathers place place and sits down

Pyrrhos scratchs his chin

"Pontus....Men of the Council how does a war with Pontus sound to you? I think it is stupid to do now. We are already concidering a joint campaign, but three...thats to many."

Thaliarchos stands,

Gogor, my sympathies to you. I am sure every man here would willingly give his life for his country, to die at the hands of a sneak is surely not how any of us would wish to serve the Arche though. In saying that each and every one of us is surely aware we are but a small part of a glorious whole, if I were killed tomorrow I would not expect the rest of you to run off on a wild expedition of revenge. No, we will not forget this great insult to our country and to your honourable family, but we cannot turn our course aside now to avenge one man.

He bows his head in condolence before sitting.

The Akontistai charged into the broken gates but were cut down by cavalry, that had been lying in wait. The Phanlangitites marched in the gates and were met by fierce Makedonian resitance. It faltered quickly."

"A great victory my king, you have shown the true power of our kingdom." And he turns to the members of the council. "I still ask the council to help me revenge but revenge is also a dish that should be served cold. I know we can't attack Pontus now, I didn't expect that either. But I ask of the council when we have peace in Hellas or Italy to send our armies to Pontus."

And he sits back down

Thaliarchos addresses the assembly,

Friend Gorgos, it is good to see grief has not dulled your senses. Indeed we are unable to take revenge on Pontus right now, but it will be something in the back of all our minds. When they think we have forgotten their insult, we will strike. Congratualtions on your victory in Demetrias sire. I would suggest taking Korinthos next, then we should seek peace with the Makedones. I think allowing them to survive as a shell of their former selves would be more of a humiliation than wiping them out. Also letting them live would give the Athenian/Spartan alliance something to occupy them.
As for Megale Hellas, I admit I am unsure of how to proceed there. Certainly Ptolemaios would need reinforcement to have a chance of holding the region. How did he lose to a force almost fifty percent smaller than his own? I believe he should stay in Taras with his army and attempt to make up for his failure.

Thaliarchos sits.

"I think we need to send reinforcments and not levies but real soldiers professionals who can win a battle. And also we need a new strategy for Megas Hellas. We must now go in the offensive and crush them in their weak points and not sit and wait till they come."

Just as he sits, Basilieus Pyhrros strides in the room.

"Ah, Gentlemen. News! The newfound army has set sail for Taras and will arrive next season. Also, We have signed a ceasefire with the decrepit Makedons, the cunning Romans, and the Arche Selucuia. I trust none of these ceasefires to last, but at least we have peace and time to revitalize our strategy. What doth the council say concerning what should be done next?"

Pyhrros sits at his chair and waits.

"It's good to hear that a new army is being send to Taras, and the fact that we lost the battle wasn't only the prince his fault but also ours, for not reinforcing our troops in Taras. That's a mistake we never must repeat. And now that there is peace I say we must move against Byzantion and conquer it."

Byzantion hmm, why Byzantion I wonder? Surely not because it will bring our Empire closer to Pontus and give you cause to demand war against them? We all grieve for you father, and revenge will come, but we already have enemies on more than one front, yet you want to add more! Crazy, we are not superhuman, our armies cannot be in two places at once.

It is good to hear we have reinforcements arriving in Megale Hellas, and it is also good the Basileus does not place his trust in these "ceasefires." I believe the Romans are only looking to recover strength, as soon as possible we must take the initiative. Our forces should move north, taking out any Roman allies on the road to Rome.

"Why does every one think that every decision I think has something to do about my grief for the death of my father. I can assure that I'm only thinking about our country. I want us to expand towards the Black Sea. There are riches there we can get trade with new ports and there are allot of mines there too. And controlling the Bosporus will bring also allot of wealth. And I also propose to send a diplomat to Hayastan and get trade rights and an alliance with kingdom. They could be useful in the future when we decide to expand towards the east."

We should expand north and east. We are at peace with the romans and the Makedons an it would be foolish to not take advatage of this. The makedons are somehow cabable of supporting a large army (Darn script) and I fear that they will expand north again after crushing the Hellen Alliance. I would leave an army garrison in Demetrias, while the rest of my army marches into thrake. But seeing as to how the council does no want this, I will accept their desicion. I will wait. I will report back after the council has decided what to do. Should I march on Arpi?

Normally I would say yes, but I need everyone else to be active. So if other people can be active, sure. So you can post, just if no one responds it just because all the other people are not active for some reason. I wil respond however, since it is my duty

I am perfectly cool with continueing. I just find it difficult to do so with an even number of active people. If you guys could recruit a few more people, that would be very appreciated. I am not good with the recruiting people.

The best recruiting tool for something like this is simply playing the game. If people see it moving along they are more likely to join in.

I thought that question was a bit of an "in-joke" as Argos isnt in EB...

Well, on the description of the epirotes campaign decription it says stay away form argos at the end and if you conquer apsis or whatever the romani call it, it says, in the little history thing it gives you, Called Argos by the hellenes.

Wasn't Argos in the Pelleponessos EB region?

Idk. That makes sense but I don't know. Why would they say to stay away from Argos?

I hardly need to voice my opinion on that my Lord, I am sure my views are known throughout your great Empire by now. Just in case however, I say yes, march on Arpi as soon as possible. Take the city, kill the garrison and feed and re-equip our men. Then march on toward Rome.

I agree with you, Thaliarchos ,but i think we should assert your authority, my Lord, in Dalminion and Segestica. Those are easy targets defended by some scums who dare to call themselves warriors . Dalmatia is full of gold. That gold can be used to pump our economy. More gold, means more soldiers, more soldiers means more Romans dead! After that we could invade Arpi. With the gold from Dalmatia and the silver from Illyrica we will have no problem taking Rome!
