Actually - the Punic Wars offer a GREAT chance for naval battles. My recollection is that the 1st War favored Carthage and the 2nd favored Rome in terms of Naval power - still -there were some huge battles with Triremes.
Also, Ptolemy had a nice Navy.

I hope we get a purely Greek faction besides the diadochoi (like the Achaen or Aetolian koinon, maybe...or a mix of the southern city states not holded by the Macedonian kingdom at the time) to play those first.
Otherwise, I'll stick with the main Macedon kingdom, with Seleukids as my second draw and Ptolemaic as the third. As the leader of the Celts I would harness the tribes ferocity and creativity and win victories the bards would praise until the stars grew dim. After that we'd get really hammered and throw up on ourselves.

My first time through I'll definately play as the Romans, who are my favorite culture in antiquity. After that I'll probably play as Carthage.

Ok so my Roman History is not up to scratch...when exactly were the Huns seen on the boarders as a threat? I know Atilla was arounf 630A.D. which is very late on for Rome.
So far we have Gauls and Visigoths, as tribes from the france/germany/poland area. Bit further south = Dacians with their cool standards. They had hollow wolf skins that when the wind went through them, it howled.(Possible re-creation for the game...????!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif But the Huns were in present day Ukraine were they not? Which was on the borders of the crumbling Empire.
Unfortunately, you cannot just harness the Mongols from MTW as the Huns, because of the new polygonal engine. But Atilla the Hun was a major player in the final fall of Rome.

The Huns appeared around on the fringes of the Empire around 420 A.D. They were never really a threat to the Roman Empire directly(at least not the Western Empire), as the Roman Empire had been in decline for over a century, and had fallen to Germanic barbarians a few years before.(the Hunnic invasions did hasten the fall of Rome indirectly, as the Germanic tribes they harrassed migrated and attacked across Rome's borders) By 450 A.D. when Attila led the Huns in an invasion of the west, the Western Roman Empire existed in name only, and a barbarian warlord named Aetius was effectively in control of Rome.Quote:

by 451 the Roman army had been mostly "Barbarians" for 150 years.
there's no evidence that such "barbarians" weer any less romanised than other peoples had been prior to them tho - they certainly could be as well disciplined and equipped as any other "Romans".
But Rome itself was rather small - it had really lost control of huge areas to "invading" barbarians (a misnomer really - mostly they were invited in!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif but had been unable to absorb those new populations into a Roman political entity.
Hence what would once have been a Roman army with a few tribal allies was only about 1/3rd Roman with massive and relatively independant allied armies aiding it.
But to beat Rome:

If you're talking about battlefield reverses, probably the greatest single Roman defeat was at Carthaginian hands at Cannae.
Carthaginians. Or maybe I might just pick a different faction, wait till the Romans attack Carthage, then engage them while they're weaker.
The Gauls (actually those living in what we would call now "northern Italy") sacked Rome. Them only, before the final fall of Rome to the Goths. But that was before the era we are talking about, actually.Quote:

you're thinking of Valerian, captured by Persians yes, but by Sapor of the Sassanid dynasty in 260 AD and never heard of again. Rumours had it that while he remained alive he was used as a foot/mounting stool by the Sassanid emperor, and when dead he was stuffed and kept as a trophy.
The Parthians were overthrown by the Sassanids about 220AD.
