Well, I picked the Franks only because I and Braden liked it. Of course we can choose another faction but the main point is that in my opinion we should keep the game as simple as possible.
The only eastern faction in BI is Sassaids and perhaps Berbers as well.
The first could be quite interesting to play if you like generals who never die. :beam:
However, Berbers are not "completely finished" faction since they were never meant to be playable.
Factions in BI:
Barbarians:
Celts, Saxons, Franks, Burgundy, Lombardy, Alemanni
Nomad/Steppe:
Vandals, Huns, Sarmatians, Goths
Roman:
Western Roman Empire, Eastern Roman Empire
Eastern:
Sassanids, Berbers
There are also Ostrogoths, Slavs and Roman rebels but they are not playable from start.
We shouldn't also pick one of the "half finished" factions.
Out of these faction Romans, Huns, Franks, Saxons, Sassanids are the only ones who can give something to the RP and make the game interesting.
I wasn't thinking THAT eastern :clown:
I'd like Vandals, but they are not in you "final" list. Out of those I'd be interested in the Huns, but I don't know how powerful they are. Anyways, it was just a comment and if everyone is ok with Franks, I'll join the fold. Its not a major concern.
I think playing a horde nation could be interesting, and would simplify all the rules on land ownership.
You mean that "he who conquers owns it" rule?
There is one small downside with hordes.. when they settle then they lose 1/3 of their forces and it's impossible to determine from whose stack what units will disappear.
Also, they don't have any income. It's not big problem if we don't buy mercs and sack every city we take.
Playing as Vandals could be interesting. Trying to follow their historical route(from their starting position through Italy, Gaul and Spain to North-Africa) will certainly give a lot of big battles against romans.
Might I suggest a throw-back to the old succession games? If you play the Vandals, make a house rule that the faction CANNOT settle until it reaches North Africa by way of Spain, and when you reach there you MUST settle. That will give you a big challenge in getting there, plus it will get rid of concerns about the loss of units on settling because when you finally settle it will be together in a cluster. Perhaps some custom rules about determining ownership of units while still in the horde part of the game would be useful, and then only switch over to the full rules listed above once you finally settle. Might be fun to have ways of taking control of other peoples' units while in horde mode: a power struggle of sorts. Perhaps ownership of the settled lands can be determined by who 'wins' the power struggle during the journey.
Btw, Franks can also become horde.
Anyway, what faction shall we use then?
Franks vs Vandals
I always get wiped out by the Vandals when I try to play the Goths. :
I wouldn't mind playing as the Franks or Saxons...
I'm definitely pro-Vandal, especially with the idea of traveling to North Africa vis Spain in Horde mode.
Lol, after I checked those two factions I like Vandals a lot more than before. :laugh4:
Never played Vandels in BI, didn't appeal to me so I might find it an interesting struggle to acclimatise. Willing to give it a go if its interesting though!
It will be interesting when WRE manages to survive the first few turns. As far as I remember, WRE in full power is :wall:
So, it's Vandals then?
I'll write that "Do not settle before Africa" into the Rules as well then.
lol...quick test battle and I'm all at sea with Vandals! Horse archers!?! What blasphemy is this! No infantry thats any good either?? Oh dear, think I'm gonna kill lots of our own people (snigger)
I suppose since I'm not going to be responsible for settlement management, I don't mind playing Vandals.
However, I can see myself 'losing' a lot of battles by running away when my arrows run out. XD
I think that the "Road to Africa" could be implemented as the first event?
This way the Rules can be overlooked(in most cases).
Edit: Though it's not that important but I had an idea that we change campaign map forts for the nomads to villages. They look a lot better.
I'm definitely interested in a game with the Vandals.

TinCow, could you please name the thread: RTW:BI roleplaying game: Vandal Invasion

So, is there any other questions/suggestions/ideas/etc?
If not then we have decide who get's what character. Beside the two starting FM's there are also spy, assassin and diplomat available.
Does anyone have objections me becoming the GM? I have done this job before(I was GM in WotB) and thus have some idea what I have to do.
I'm cool with Ibn-Khaldun GMing.
Also I'm pretty new to this, so I don't mind if I have to wait to get a character. :book:

You can take one of the agents if you want or wait until those to FM's become available.
I'll take that diplomat.
Since we don't change anything in the game then there will be no mod for us. The first save will be posted soon.
If you want to add something into the rules or change something there then please post it now.
First event, "Road to Africa", will be posted in the Council thread once we have started the game.
Edit: The starting save: VI-363s-0
I'd take Maroboduus unless someone objects.
Rules look good Ibn, not to complicated and in line with what we are used to. I'm also good with you GMing and if you want help with something, I'm available.
Oza - I'll take the spy. Was going for a more active character but I think I'll have more fun with the spy! Muhahahhahah....
BTW - any mini-mods being used on this or is it Vanilla?
No, it's just Vanilla. I thought mini mods will make things too complicated.
Also, if any of you don't want any of the current character then you can wait those 2 FM's. You can still take part of the Council Sessions and vote but can't become the Treasurer.
@TheFlax - If you want then you could help me with the history thread.
Nothing too difficult.
Each turn update the history by adding a link to battle reports and stories. Or when something interesting happens in Council give a link there. I think it's much easier to update the history when something have just happened rather than updating it during each council session.
I'm also going to keep the Library as simple as possible. Should be easier to read it and updating it this way.
Edit: Perhaps merging library and history into one thread? You updating the post with history and I'm doing the same with the library posts?
Sounds good, just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I'll take care of it.
It might be a good idea to merge the two to avoid too many threads, then again it might make it a bit too "busy".
I hadn't anticipated such a desire for agents. :clown:
I'll switch to Visimar then, unless someone really wants him. This way, we can start as soon as someone picks the FH.
@TheFlax - At the moment one thread for both library and history is a better option. Later, when it does look like too busy we can just ask TC to brake them into two threads.
@Braden - Oza's trait description("This man has a taste for reading other people's correspondence.") made me laugh and I pictured him as a postman reading peoples mails. :laugh4:
One more thing to discuss: Should we play the game in a new forum or should we stay in this one?
I have no problem playing in this forum but if someone else wants to start a big game like LotR or KotF then things might get confusing(threads with the new game idea mixed with this ones threads). Perhaps TinCow could share his opinion on this matter.
I have been following you some time and this sounds interesting. I'm not sure if I'll join or not, but if I decide to, can I join later?
Of course you can! You can take part of the game even if you don't have in-game character. Discussions during Council meetings make the game interesting and there you can participate even without an avatar.
And welcome to the Org! ~
Okay, thank you for the reply. But how much time this this consume a week? Because I have also other things to do (like you all I believe).
Between the Council session it doesn't consume much of your time. If you can check the threads once a day then that's it. Unless you want to become Treasurer. He have to be a bit more active. Council Sessions take more time since then people post more usually.
Okay, thanks. I'm really thinking about joining.
These things take as much time as you want them too! I can only access the forums from home so my input wont be to the same "inexhaustible" level as in previous ventures so checking out the Treasurer reports would be the minimum I guess and adding, if you want to, some comments from your Elder Warrior in the role play.
Thank you, Braden. But I'm afraid playing this roleplaying game as a horde nation will be difficult. Any advices to play this game?
I plan to RP as an individual. Hence the choice of a spy, however, its not that hard to RP with a horde faction. If your unfamiliar with the type of warrior government these races you might have to do some research to get into the "head space" (I intend to do some refreshing myself). Its far removed from the sort of organisation we have in other games (roman etc) but that's the challenge I think. My main pointer might be to just think of the character, where he is in the game and what he might want to achieve (looking at the initial traits helps me as well in this)....nothing wrong with being a loyal warrior to the cause of the Chieftain, likewise, nothing wrong with being a back stabbing git who just wants the power for himself! The Vandals weren't a mindless people bent on just destruction, if memory serves didn't a Visi-Goth become Emperor of Rome for a short time at one point?
There were reasons behind "horde", whilst I don't think the Vandals were nomadic peoples, they had other reasons for constantly moving (namely the Nomadic tribes pushing them out!)
TF...you never have to quantify your comments to the likes of me. I had so much success playing Decius, I think I can replicate it here for everyone...(now to research Vandals! I know very little...lol)
EDIT - it was Theodoric the Great, King of the Ostrogoths who became Emperor of Rome (King of Italy...much the same I think at the time)
Well, vandals were not nomads in real history. ~;)
Also, I will post the other threads in a few days. There are still few people who haven't picked their characters yet.
Edit: Perhaps the Vandal Guide in RTW Guides forum could help you to find something useful.
Just making sure my earlier comment wasn't misunderstood.
Perhaps we should do a thread with info on the Vandals and links? Help everyone joining the game get their bearings.
That is a good idea.
But keep in mind that this is Vanilla BI so... there isn't much you can do with the real history. :beam:
Good plan TF, perhaps we also need a dedicated Roleplay/IC discussion thread? (Guess we'll also need one for Treasurers reports too?)
We can keep this one for general chat about the game then.

Looks good so far!
Yes, it does. What character will you take? Or you going to play without an avatar?
I wouldn't mind taking Gildo, if no one else wants him.
This game has suddenly inspired me to buy this and this. Hopefully they will ship soon so I can post a bit about stuff I've read in the information thread. Like I did for the last two games in which I participated, I looked into clothing, but haven't found much, though I'll probably have a few images with that information post. :2thumbsup:
Also, Happy Birthday Braden! :balloon:
Happy Birthday Braden! :balloon3:
Btw, what have happened to Zim, Tristan and others who played these games before?
Haven't seen Zim posting for awhile..
I have one question: How do you cope with differences in time zones?
Sorry for my inbox being full. I have cleared some space now.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, when you get this old you tend to try and forget! lol
LoL - Timezones are catered for by having a 48hr period for submitting things like game .sav files etc and as the role play is text based and much of it goes behind doors via PM's (well the secretive, backstabbing type does) that helps even it out. I'd be lying though to say there was a minor advantage to be working with people directly in the same time zone but that really on effects Character based Role play and not the physical mechanics or results of the game.
Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but how do you extract a file? Where should I place it? Because I have tried those games before but I was never able to play the file...
Go where ever you installed RTW, in the BI folder there should be a "saves" folder. Just extract the save file there and you are good.
LoL - the .sav files are located in the save folder of R:TW. Its pretty easy to find it and copy (don't cut&paste) the file. To import a file, you download the zipped .sav file from the link that'll be put on the forum thread and then unzip it and copy&paste it into the main save folder.
I can put up a fuller instruction later when I'm on my main PC (this one doesnt have any TW games on it for example purposes)
Okay, thank you all.
Cool.
Right-click on START > Explore
Select your main Hard Drive (I have two, Rome for me is on my "M" drive...likely to be "C" for normal users). So my Rome files are located:
M:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War
There is a folder marked "bi" (barbarian Invasion file), within that you have the folder marked "saves"
this is where the .sav files (your game saves) are stored. You can copy&paste (CTRL+C) any from here or into here. Remember to name any saves YOU have and want to keep distinctly different from those that will be used for the PBeM game.
Right. Thanks
There is a small problem with the save. I forgot to turn fog of war off when I checked some cities for the first event. :shame:
After the first council session is over I'll take the save and turn it off right before I declare it open.
Is there any important role I can fill?
I would like someone to take the heir, Gondegusulus. He controls a large army and I don't want to let him stay behind while we move forward. ~:)
Give me some time to think about it. Maybe I'll take the heir.
Not sure what the ETA for start is but I do know we've started work on setting the scene etc so (hate to pressure anyone), if anyone is willing to take Gondegusulus I think we'd like a commitment quite soon.
Ok, I'll be Gondegulsus.
@HKtG - He is yours then. Just remember that he have a quite important role in this game.
@LoL - You can always take one of Visimar's sons. You can still take part of the game even though they are not old enough to lead armies.
@Braden - I plan to open the Council Session on Friday, 9th April.
Library is updated with basic information. I'm surprised that the Heir, Gondegusulus, have more influence than the Kings!
Also, once we start the game I will post an OOC thread and keep this one for Rule Change proposals/discussions.
I'll take Maroboduus, unless somebody else really wants him...
He is yours.
Stories thread is already open. If you want to post a story about you character then go ahead.
I was waiting for the co-op story to be posted before I start the Council session but I'll open the Council now since I don't have time later today.
Event 1 will also be posted.
I'll be following this, and in the meantime I'd appreciate it if you could put me in line for a family member.
Can you put me in line for a family member too?
Cecil and Igno, both of you are in the list.
I'll also be lurking in the background until a general is free :2thumbsup:
@EF - Looks like you have to wait until the sons of Gondegusulus(heir) will become of age. That's some 30 turns of waiting!
