Our tale begins in Orzammar, shining beacon of hope for the dwindling Dwarven race; lying beneath the lands of Ferelden, these hardy warriors spend their lives fighting the Darkspawn threat, living each day as though it is their last.
The Dwarves are a proud race who adhere to a rigid moral code of honour and justice... however, while everything may seem amicable to the uninitiated, one could not be more astounded as the real Orzammar comes to light; poverty and crime plague the lower streets while decadance and corruption paint a contrasting scene in the upper city.
Orzammar's Diamond Quarter is home to the upper echelons of Orzammar society; the Noble Caste. Following a shock announcement from King Endrin regarding his second child, the stage has been set for a treacherous and potentially fatal game of politics; during the night, a life has been taken which is set to rock the very foundations of the city's ruling dynasty, the Aeducans.
This is a wicked tale of betrayal, deceit and murder woven deep into the political intrigue of the Noble Caste; will you end up another stain upon the bloodsoaked tapestry of Orzammar's nobility or will you survive to tell the tale?
Ensure that you keep your friends close and your dagger closer, lest someone get to their's first.
Phases
The game is divided into alternating phases of Day and Night; the former lasts 48 hours to encourage voting; the night will be 24 hours long. There may be some fluctuation in this due to real life constraints (mainly work!), but I will adhere to them as best as possible.
Voting
During the Day phase, participants will vote for a player to be imprisoned or executed/exiled; each outcome carries it's own benefits and drawbacks.
Imprisonment removes a player from the game for a single night phase, whereby they will be released at the end of the next day; while imprisoned, the player cannot use any abilities, nor can they be targetted by those of others.
If you opt for this, vote as follows: imprison: Secura
Execution and exile are basically the standard lynch, whereby the player with the greatest number of votes will be removed from the game; whether the lynchee is executed or exiled is entirely down to their character and is solely for narrative purposes.
For this choice, vote as such: vote: Secura
You can also deign to follow either of these choices by abstaining; in this game, it amounts to voting for no execution or imprisonment, simply vote as shown: Abstain
Persistently not voting for three phases in a row will result in the Wrath of Duncan, so please try to stay committed to the game.
Communication
Various characters will have access to QuickTopics to discuss the game (in-character preferred, but not required); out-of-thread communication is prohibited other than in these host-sanctioned QuickTopics, where you will post under your character's name rather than your own username.
You are permitted to discuss your abilities, items and night orders in the QuickTopics, but cannot reveal your actual identity as a player or your alignment; in-thread, you may discuss anything you wish, though be mindful that copy-pasting is not allowed whatsoever.
This is solely to ensure that I'm aware people are keeping within the spirit of the game and not simply coming out and revealing things in private.
The standard rules regarding dead players applies, so I won't repeat it all... simply that your continued participation after death is encouraged, be it a simple comment on writeups or so on, but please try to let the game take it's course and don't reveal anything that isn't public knowledge.
Character Information
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Alignment
The core of any mafia game, all players will find themselves aligned to one faction or another; not all evil elements follow the call of the Archdemon, just as not all of Orzammar follows the rule of King Endrin Aeducan.
Whether you are good, neutral or outright evil, you will have your mark to make on the world.
Stats & Injuries
All characters, from the lowliest citizen of Dust Town to the mighty Grey Wardens, will have some measure of Strength, Constitution, Magic and Willpower; among the magically-inept Dwarves of Orzammar, Magic and Willpower holds little weight, and as such they will not feature in this game.
Strength and Constitution determine the outcome of physical attacks; that is to say, any attack made with a melee or ranged weapon. Consider the following example:
The Alpha has 6 Strength compared to Sandal's 7 Constitution; in this instance, Sandal is too hardy for his attacker and would not be killed by the Hurlock's assault, though there is the potential for Sandal to suffer an injury which could have any number of effects depending on the luck (or lack thereof) of the die.
Should the boot have been on the other foot, with Sandal the attacker and the Hurlock defending itself, it's likely that Sandal might have killed his foe outright.
Injuries are a counter to items; they cause the players to incur a variety of penalties dependent on the nature of the infliction; typical outcomes may result in Strength/Constitution penalties, temporary loss of an ability and more...
Classes & Specialisations
Most characters are given a pre-determined class at the beginning of the game that determines their stats, abilities and items slots; Warriors tend to be hardier and take more damage, Mages are usually able to attack as well as use a spell and Rogues are masters of evasion. This is character-dependent, however.
Specialisations are available for some roles upon meeting character-specific personal goals. When this occurs, you will recieve a PM from the host detailing any choices you have, the potential benefits involved for each choice and any abilities you may acquire. You'll have time to decide and then respond with your choice.
Abilities & Spells
Every character will have an ability of some variety, regardless of alignment and stature in the game; some may limited in what they can do, such as 'can protect X each turn', and others may be of much broader and greater use. As with specialisations, some roles may learn new spells upon meeting their personal goals.
For all active abilities, whether they require the Day or Night to be used, send a PM to the host during the specified phase to use them. Naturally, this is not required for passive abilities. Unless otherwise stated, only one ability can be used per phase, though items can change this.
Items, Gold & Shopping
Money makes the world go 'round, and Orzammar is no exception; all characters have a penchant for gold, though some naturally have more than others. Characters will start with a fixed amount of gold and a set amount of income, which is the value they generate each turn; note that I will try to keep track of everyone's relative income, but you should keep your own records just in case. :3
All characters possess three item slots; one for armour, one for a weapon and one for a trinket... note that various classes may yield additional slots for more items, such as a defensive Warrior being able to equip a shield.
Players will have the chance to purchase items, potions and even different abilities for the right price from the city's merchants... providing they can outbid their fellow gamers!
For new items, one of Orzammar's many merchants will announce their wares during the start of the day phase, as well as any inherent effects and starting prices; bidding on these items requires gold and will be conducted privately via PM to me. The winning bidder will not be announced in-thread.
For items recovered from the lynched/murdered, Duncan will call for a public vote from all present for whom they believe should recieve the item, but he will not reveal the item's effects. The style of voting will be item-dependent, but will go along the lines of: weapon: Secura
armour: Secura
trinket: Secura
Victory Conditions, Personal Goals & Survival
Every single character will have both a victory condition and at least one personal goal that they attend to achieve before the game is over, in addition to the standard survival parameter of victory.
These conditions and goals account for your final ranking and the closing write-up will change accordingly, so ensure that you attempt these additional goals to the best of your ability to leave your mark on the game.
The three conditions apply a percentage to your final score; 60% for victory, 30% for your personal goal and 10% for surviving. Awards and such will be awarded based upon both the above totals and overall performance.
----------------------------------------
This is my first small game, and only my second game total, so I'm hoping for a good turnout and crossing my fingers that everything goes as planned; if you have any queries for the game, feel free to send me a PM and ask away, I'll be more than happy to answer.
The names in silver are those that have continued to express interest in the game either privately or in the Assembly Yard and, as such, have been given first refusal on a signup spot.

Well, the game is meant to start on the 10th, and it's two phases every three days (so it'd be seven days and seven nights by the end of the month, give or take)... not sure how long it's going to take though, depends on the skill and commitment of those who sign up as well as how the mechanics and such hold up. :3

T'is a very good game!
This mafia game is based on one of the six 'Origin' stories, the Dwarven Noble, often cited by the DA community as the best of the six due to the rich plot that actually carries through into the later game, something that doesn't hold true for some of the others. Naturally, I've had to chop and change things to make them work in a mafia setting, so the game will include both key characters from the story and some of my own to facilitate the game, but it'll have that DA flavour for certain. :3

The thing is I've had the game lying on my shelf for months now, but never have gotten around to playing it; haven't really played much video games at all recently. I got it because I had played previous Bioware RPGs like Neverwinter Nights 2 but then again, I haven't played Neverwinter Nights 2 since I beat it the first time.

Anyways, someone raised an interesting point about items, and I have amended the opening post to reflect the method of acquiring them, but will reiterate here nonetheless:
Merchants will present new items and announce their effects, but they are bid on privately with gold; the winner is kept private also.
Duncan will present previously-owned items and will not announce their effects, and they are publicly voted on by the players; the winner is announced in-thread alongside the lynch.
Items are always presented at the start of the day phase, after the writeup regarding the previous night's events. :3
EDIT: As an additional note, I'll reiterate something else; be careful who you reveal to. This is Orzammar's Diamond Quarter, rife with deceit and betrayal... those who you consider your allies or your kin may not stay that way, and even the most trusted of allies can become the most feared of enemies.

And if someone wants to role-claim in-thread then so be it, I'm not going to forbid it... just like all games though, what might save you from a lynch may present you as a nighttime target instead. :P

Okay, I suck... due to a newbie administration error, I have sent the same PM to two players at once; while the intended recipient has recieved it and confirmed doing so, another player who was intended for a different role entirely has seen that PM and as such can't really participate anymore due to metagaming reasons, which is most unfortunate. I've promoted God Emperor from reserves to reflect this unfortunate turn of events.

I've been typing out roles since I got home from work about seven hours or so ago, having completed nine total today; anyone who has recieved a PM already will tell you that alot of effort's gone into it, particularly as half the characters are completely made-up for the game and thus require a fresh background created for them to fit in with the story. I estimate that there's about... 60+ images used in the completed game, just in the role PMs alone (characters, classes, abilities and items... s'alot of stuff); I like things to look good, presentable and in clear and concise English.
I had planned on starting the game today, but the work's immensely tiring; I really really should have begun work on the PMs sooner, but severely underestimated both the workload of the game itself (t'is my first small game, second game in all!) and just how knackered I would be after work each day; my body wasn't really prepared for walking miles in dunes, lifting my own body weight in sand and using sporting equipment that carries a risk of killing me, that's for sure! :P
So to Romanic, Beskar, Chaotix, split, Blackadder and Khazaar, I apologise again that you've had to wait; I'll be finishing the last few role PMs tomorrow after work (2pm GMT) and hopefully you'll have them and a running game within the next twenty-four hours.

Re: Dragon Age: The Aeducan Succession
Just watched the WC Final conclude, finishing up PMs now; two and a bit left, then I'll post a short writeup (to be expanded later) and get the game going! :3
Her skin was much paler than it had been only hours ago; cheeks that once flushed crimson were now blanched a speckled pink-white that showed none of the warmth that she had been known for. In life, the noble's soft auburn hair had begun to give way to brittle grey tones; the usual tight-knotted bun that she wore so regally had come loose as she collapsed to the floor, cascading across the stone as though it was for a painting.
Emotionless, white-hued orbs gazed upwards towards the ceiling, flecked with narrow-lined shades of scarlet; the rolled-back eyes of Lady Dordan gave no indications of how she had died, told no tale of why her life had been taken so coldly and suddenly.
King Endrin Aeducan sighed heavily, and turned away from the body; he held no thoughts of any scandal that might emerge with a murder occuring on his property, nor of the joyous events that had preceded this moment, but for the surviving members of House Dordan who had lost their matriach so soon after her predecessor had died as a result of her advancing years. It was his due, as their monarch and her friend, to ensure that they were properly cared for and that her killer was met with the swift hand of justice.
"My dear girl...", he whispered softly, twirling a wrinkled forefinger through his whitened beard as a beaded droplet or two slowly ran down from his eyes.
A hand rested upon his shoulder, and Endrin turned to see his esteemed guest had concluded his inspection of the deceased; a rush of warmth filled the monarch's heart, and he managed a weak smile beneath the gentle tears, because he knew that if there was anyone that could be counted upon in such a dire time, it would be a Grey Warden.
"There are no signs of physical distress, but beyond that it isn't clear, Endrin", the human stated calmly.
"Then... what killed the poor girl, Duncan?", Endrin said through gritted teeth, his smile having faded and the tears continuing harder still, "was it...?"
A crowd had gathered in the Throne Room, many of whom were still wearing thier night attire having been woken up several hours early; a sea of disgruntled and confused Dwarven faces flitted from the weary-looking King hunched in his throne to the formiddable figure of a man stood nearby, conferring with fellow humans about matters they knew not.
Endrin finally managed to shake himself from his own thoughts, climbing to his feet and looking across at his guests; on another day, he might have found himself chuckling about Lady Helmi's bed-hair, but this was no time for laughing, only severity.
"Loyal deshyrs, attentive citizens, trusted children", he croaked, feeling a lump in his throat as he began to speak. He paused, cleared his throat, and started again, trying to remain strong for everyone else, particularly his three children, all of whom he counted among the crowd.
"A few hours ago, the lifeless body of Lady Dordan was discovered in her chambers", the King stated gravely, "and while we are unsure currently, we have the honourable Grey Wardens assisting our efforts."
This statement caused a ripple of emotions throughout the crowd; some remained silent in sheer shock, others frantic in full-on fear. Endrin was pleased to see that his own children maintained a veneer of outer calm and decorum, at the very least, even if they did not feel it.
"We are going to root out the troublemaker and show them that no Dwarf, whether he be pauper or prince, will avoid the hammer of justice." King Aeducan stated in a finalised manner, before settling back into his chair and sighing heavily once more.
Remember to check the rules, as they've been amended recently!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
I love feedback, so feel free to make any comments about my writing publicly/privately!
Have fun!

-This is to the players of the game: I shall try to keep my participation high, but I fear I wont have acces to the computer all day and night, so if I do not answer questions directed at me, then now you know why
-for Secura: Could you at each day phase, including this one, write the names of the players still in the game?

I had intended to do that for future phases, yes; I didn't provide a list for this phase because all seventeen players are currently alive.

I'm a simple fellow. If a night in the jails will make you all more comfortable, I'm ok with that. Nevertheless, I think another would be a better choice Imprison: Khazaar

Let's not be hasty here, if I may be so bold. Surely we do not want to condemn to death or exile an innocent?

Fellow dwarves, we do not need to mindlessly vote for ourselves, not when there is no way of telling who, or what, the murderer is. I say, at the most, we imprison someone, until our path is clearer.
vote: abstain.

You're all nothing but city elves. Stinking, dirty, thieving city elves.
Mind you, I doubt there are any elves in this game.

Question to those wiser than I. Why is voting to kill/exile someone is a better option than imprisoning someone when we know not who is responsible?

Re: Dragon Age: The Aeducan Succession
Just a slight change in the rules regarding the imprison option; while this prevents the player from using any abilities for the night phase, it also prevents them being targetted by those of others too.
I'll amend the initial post to reflect that. :3

Your words have a ringing of truth to them. We should not kill anyone unless they are enemies of Orzammar.

Your dishonest words betray you for the coward you are, Double A. You speak of truth, but in doing so you only serve yourself. You put me a comfortable two votes ahead of your own death or exile (and one in front of Autolycus' imprisonment), all in the guise of a reasonable prudence.

I am not worried if I were to be exiled, for I have nothing to hide from the honorable folk of Orzammar. Your accusations reveal your own secretes, Renata.
