Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
Ireland 1070 AD, five Dukes vie for control of an entire island, five families eager to rule and proclaim their dynasty the rightful Kings of Ireland. There are numerous ways this can be achieved, diplomacy and marriage, war, assassination and perhaps other ways for the unscrupulous or the righteous.
Roles:
Duke of Ulster, Meath, Connaght, Leinster, Munster. (Map above isn't quite accurate, I will post another if/when the game starts)
Each dukedom will have one Duke and various other family members to help rule the realm, they can be appointed as ministers, married off to other Dukedoms or given count titles to rule a portion of the realm. Each player will have stats that will govern how effective they are at each aspect of governing a demesne, each stat will have more than one role in the game.
Of course it wouldn't be Crusader Kings without a wide variety of random events, how your dynasty will be affected by these will be down to your response to them.
Any number of players will be accepted into this, even after the game starts. If I get a low number of players I can cut one or two Dukedoms out, probably looking at a minimum of 15 players for a decent game.
This is what you are aiming for, are you devious enough to get there?
If enough people show interest I will ask for a slot on the timetable. Any ideas, constructive criticisms welcome.

Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
Expansion on gameplay and rules (still a work in progress):
Warfare:
Each province will have a manpower stat, this will be the number of men available for warfare. The percentage that can be enlisted will depend on the realm's stability. Each province will also have a terrain type, certain types giving defensive bonuses (specific buildings can increase this bonus) and advances may give offensive or defensive bonuses. Troop numbers, offensive/defensive bonuses and the Marshall's military stat will determine the battle result. There will be no specific unit types, or morale stat.
War can only be declared if you have a claim on a title held by the realm you want to attack. Title claims will be determined at the start of the game, certain events may lead to new claims, or loss of existing claims.
Diplomacy:
The Chancellor will handle diplomacy, alliances, declarations of war, marriages, trade agreements and more will be in the game.
Intrigue:
The Spymaster will control a realm's spies and assassins.
Economy:
Each province will have a base income, this will be modified by the Steward's Stewardship rating, buildings, a realm's stability, trade agreements and other factors. Buildings can be built depending on province, advances and other factors.
Technology:
You can decide whether to aim for civil or military advances, which advances you get will be random. Advances may spread to other provinces randomly.
Family Tree:
Every player in the game will be part of a dynastic faction and potentially could become King, or Queen, of Ireland. Due to the nature of the game players may join after the game has started and take over a newly born character. Each realm will have the same system of inheritance, this will be elaborated if/when the game begins.
Religion:
The Pope has decided Ireland needs an Archbishop and has appointed one to rule in his stead. He will not be able to become King, and will not be allowed to hold lands. He will be a very powerful role with the ability to excommunicate anybody he feels anti-Catholic and goals of his own.
Events:
Many events will take place over the course of the game, some effecting everyone and some only a select few or an individual. Some will be public, others private. You will have an option on how to react to each, each course will have different outcomes, these wil be unknown until the decision is made. Random events are a huge part of Crusader Kings and so will play a large role in this game.
Gameplay:
Each turn will be 48 hours, this will represent one game year. Each realm will have a Quicktopic to decide on how to proceed that year, all orders need to be made through the QT. PMs will only be used for individual's orders.
These rules are very much a WIP and ideas would be welcome.

 but what if I am a lucky winner on Facebook? Paradox is giving away a free Crusader King Complete each day to one lucky fan of their Crusader King 2 Facebook page. If I buy it then I might end up with two games! :laugh4:
Hey everyone, fan the page. The sooner you do it the sooner they get started on Crusader Kings 2!

What a curious statement.
Anyway, Cops & Robbers was kind of a test run for this, it's a similar set up even if the setting is very different. The number of sign ups for C&R, and the low level of participation make me think this wouldn't work. I would need a minimum of 5 players per Duchy (preferably more) so I would need a minimum of 20 players. I wouldn't really be comfortable starting with a lower number and hoping more join as the game goes on as that simply didn't work with C&R.
edit: Though the player feedback on Jolt's game suggests this would work well. I'll open sign ups after Cops & Robbers and see how it goes.

So I assume each player, whether he's a king, count, or councilman, is going for a faction victory?

Yes, basically everybody will be part of a Duchy and the goal is to have your Duke become King of Ireland.
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
Oh wth, I'd be interested :)
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
The setting we use is not set in stone by the way. I picked Ireland as it has a small number of Duchies, it would be familiar to most players and, well, I'm Irish. If there are any regions people would prefer feel free to make a suggestion. None of the events I have already made are specific to Ireland and could easily be used in a new setting.
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
I'm in and fine with Ireland I guess ;)
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
You guess? Are you insinuating there is something wrong with Ireland? :inquisitive:
:clown:
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
No, no, last time I checked everything was alright :P
-
Re: Large mafia game: Crusader Kings Mafia
I think Ireland would be ideal for such a game as this. If you're wanting an early medieval theme, a handful of small factions vying for dominance over each other, no significant outside influences, pre-Norman Ireland is probably as perfect a setting as one can find. :2thumbsup:

Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings
I have edited the title for you as per your (possibly ancient) request.

It's the "Gameroom" not the "Mafiaroom"...
Anway, I'll try to rejig the format a little, to give you some reason to do your boring fascinating tallies and so forth. Good to have you.

Nice one, a good surge of sign ups there, and some good players I wasn't expecting to get. Just need four or five more, depending on whether I-K actually signed up. Silly Estonian, you'd think he's played enough of these to know how to sign up clearly... :clown:

Awesome, great to have you Psycho.
Paradox are giving away a copy of Crusader Kings, from GamersGate, to everybody on their newsletter list. I'm not sure if it's too late to sign up and receive it, but if anybody would like my code (I can't guarantee it'll work, but don't see why not) drop me a pm.
-
Re: Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
I'm too busy playing Warband to get CK.
-
Re: Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
Hrm, it is useful to get Crusader Kings to play this (not a) mafia game? Never played CK.
-
Re: Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
It's useful to play Crusader Kings to make your life complete. It might make some aspects of the game a bit more clear, but not having played it shouldn't be an impediment.
-
Re: Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
Khaan was first to ask, so I gave him my code. If it works okay I'm sure there are other forum members receive the Paradox Newsletter and already own Crusader Kings, Beskar certainly owns CK and I know he has an account at Paradox Plaza, so you may still have a shot at a free game yet.

I'll take a free game if anyone else has it already.

It seems that I also receive Paradox Newsletter.. Thank the Gods, this saved me some money I was planning to spend on CK! Anyway, installing the game now and waiting for you to start this one as soon as possible. ~:)

Re: Non-mafia game: Crusader Kings [In sign-ups]
Good grief, I liked CC, but it was the first Paradox game I ever played. I don't know about all their other games, but the learning curve in CC is like a smooth vertical wall. Well, it's not nearly as bad as some games I've played (if freeware like Dwarf Fortress count), but it's quite steep. Since then I've played EU Rome and they both share my main gripes. Gotta appreciate the depth of the games, though!
