Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?

I got 41/41 for England and 48/52 for France (missed a few of the Carolingians). I don't know whether to feel proud or embarrassed to do better on these than on the American presidents. It does kind of help that so many of them copied each others' names. I got quite a few just by filling in the slots between the ones I knew.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
36 for England. It's a bit easier than the US presidents because so many of them share names. I can't believe I forgot the Jameses! Otherwise I'm unashamed to say the three I forgot were King Stephen, Lady Jane Grey and Queen Anne.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
38 For the English Monarchs. Missed out a William and didn't get King Stephen or King John.

haha, I got exactly the same score and missed the same people....
Only know anything about a dozen or so of them though.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
I got all sixteen King Louis correct, even down to their chronological order!!
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
38/41 for the English ones. Missed the most obscure ones: Stephen, Lady Jane Grey and Anne (I knew this one was a woman, but I couldn't remember/guess her name)
46/52 for the French ones. Missed the Francis ones, Carloman, Odo, Rudolph and Lothair. I knew the Francis ones, but I didn't know how it was said neither in French nor in English. Pretty good over all.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
41/41 for the English monarchs... considering I want to be a history teacher and I consider Britain as one of my two areas of expertise, I expected nothing less.
As for the French ones, I only managed 39/52. xD

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
Created a quiz with the Portuguese monarchs. Damn, this thing takes a lot of work to make!

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
100% on England/England&Ireland/Great Britain/UK lineage.
For France I missed Hugh, Carloman, Odo, Rudolph Lothair and the Johns, although it would not accept my spelling of Jean or Hugh.
Pretty easy, seeing they stack them up for you automatically.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
Got 31 of the pommy Monarchs because I forgot the Edwards. That cost me 8...
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
All 41 english, with 7 minutes and 24 secs to go. I did it in perfect order too :beam:
the French? not so lucky: on my own, I got 47 of the 52 Kings. the rest I kinda cheated :clown:
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
Bam! 36 for england!
im an american ha, im pretty impressed with myself, i missed stephen lady jane grey, the charles and anne. Otherwise you take names you know are english kings and type numerals after, like edward, richard, henry, william.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
Strictly speaking, if the quiz is going to count young Jane Grey, it must include Empress Matilda (or Maud if one prefers). Neither was crowned, but there are those of us who consider Matilda had a much better claim than Stephen; who was a forsworn usurper of the blackest water.
[pedant] Also, since the quiz refers to Monarchs of England, it should really start with Ecgbert (or at worst, Athelstan) [/pedant]
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
My Guess: Banquo is the ancestral heir of the Grey line.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
I didn't play either quiz. I wouldn't have been all that good at either. I am amazed at how many monarchs many of you can name.

I have no educated opinion on Jane Grey / Matilda.
I do agree with starting the list in 1066. The modern English state originated with the date of colonisation.
However that may be, it is at least consistent with the French quiz, which starts in 843, when there was a clear French monarch. (Which, incidentally, is why there are only sixteen Louis', whereas the last one is numbered Louis XVIII)

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
Guilliame le Batarde claimed the crown of the English as the legitimate heir of Ethelred, so he did not claim to be the first King of England. Why should we disagree with him?

There was a king of the Franks much earlier. IIRC Clovis is the first. The French enumeration recognises this because there is no Charles I, thats Charlemagne.

We should disagree because back then as much as now leaders understood the power of propaganda.
Guillaume le Bâtard was a plain usurper.
Besides, I enjoy thinking of England as an overseas colony.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
"You got ALL 41 Kings and Queens of England."
Good thing we got so many Henry's, Richard's, Charles, James, Williams, Victoria, Elizabeth, etc.
They didn't have Cromwell on there though. Would have made him roll in his grave.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
My family's ancestor treatied with Queen Vicky as our band's hereditary chief. The document is in the Royal Saskatchewan Museum right now. Good stuff.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
39 French through random guesses and 40 British because so many have the same names, I missed Lady Jane Grey.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
I can´t even name more than 3 or 4 Portuguese ones....I´m not touching this with a 10 foot stick :P

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
I tried guessing cromwell I was pretty surprised he wasn't there.
Technically if you want the kings of aengland you should have elfred and his line as well.
After the saxons were vanqiushed in 1066 it became another satellite of the normans.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
1066 was the last time England was conquered by a Foreign power. Pretty impressive, considering all the wars.

I figured 1603 would be more pendantically accurate.

A foreign king, James VI, took over England (and Ireland). 1688 was more of a mutiny (or is it barratry? :inquisitive:) for a change of management for all three combined kingdoms. The English and Scottish Parliaments had more say in the matters at that point, and elected the new "CEO" as it were, bringing in high priced foreign talent to take over. The selection of the Hanovers with the Act of Settlement was done in a similar fashion. Arguably, the English Parliament was the real power in the country, so no conquering was achieved.
But James just walked in like he owned the place. ~:pimp:

And fair enough that he did! I mean, after the Italians, Germans, Norwegians, Danes and French it was now Scotland's turn to rule England.

that's technically not an invasion; it just so happened that the successor wasn't English, but scottish.
but yeah, I otherwise agree.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
it was an invasion of the panties.

My Mediaevalism is clearly showing, I was all in order until Henry II and Lady Jane Grey only gave me pause because I was surprised they included here.
The English one is too easy, as it misses out Alfred I-Harold II.

True, but under those light Longshanks invaded/owned Switzerland.
Feudalism: For making history more comlicated.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
My score was pathetically low, but I think I was doing it wrong. For example, I typed in "James" and got nothing, which puzzled me to no end.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
That confused me at first too, but I realised that you need to write James I, James II etc.

Not bad results with French, Roman and Byzantine monarchs. Some shame about Tolkien lore. Nice time killer.

14/35 for the Portuguese one.

The same happened with Louis in France, but I kept putting Louis, Louis I, etc and nothing kept happening. However, Louis II+ worked.

Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
As much as I like history, I could only name a handful of these crowned tyrants. Apart from the ones who got their heads cut, I don't remember the reign of many monarchs.
-
Re: Can You Name the Monarchs of England/France?
With the English/British monarchs, I got 39/41.
I'm a little disgusted with myself that I didn't get them all, especially since the ones I blanked out on were Anne and William IV. You'd think I'd remember the small handful of ruling queens, as well as who Victoria's predecessor was. :wall:
With the French, I got 44/52. I missed Carloman II, Odo (of Paris), Rudolph, Lothair, Hugh Capet, Francis I, Francis II, and Louis-Philippe I.
Still, I'm rather (pleasantly) surprised I knew as many as I did. I'm admittedly less a student of French history than that of their cross-channel neighbors, and was honestly expecting to only get maybe two-thirds of them correct. I get particularly tripped up during both the earlier and later eras of the French dynasties.
