The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
What. No screenshot thread for S2 yet? Come on guys - let's see some interesting screens from those campaigns. I know you're playing. :laugh4:
I'm unsure of the in-game method to capture screens, but if you can't figure it out, use image capturing software like fraps. Afterward, host your images on a site like imageshack or photobucket. The latter requires a free account.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Why not use Print Screen?
-
Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Steam has built-in screenshotting now IIRC. Default key should be F12.
I haven't had the presence of mind to take pictures of my campaign yet, I'm too consumed by the game and how much ass it kicks at the moment!

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
First campaign as Shimazu:
Used navy to drop my main attacking force, consisting of my Daimyo, Son and Heir, and most trusted General, right next to their capital and, despite being massively outnumbered, managed to take the city with what I believe to be acceptable casualties.
The only Sakura survivor was the Daimyo, and I think 10 light cav, who fled to the woods on the right side of the screen. I chased him down and finished him however :D

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
I started an AAR and then came my first battle.
"Okay, I've got a pile of crap on my screen here that will ruin my battle screenshots, but that's okay, there'll be a button to minimise it. It's F1-F6 in Rome, let's try those. No, okay I'll randomly try other buttons.... No. Oh, I can click that to minimise the minimap perhaps the other bits have something like that? Hmm, no. Okay I'll go on the forums to see if anyone can help..... No."
Stuff this, back to Football Manager for me.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Finished my first campaign as Mori last night.
Overall impressions are that the campaign is beautiful and challenging. Overall I give it a high grade.
Took a while to re-learn some controls.
My only disappoint was that the AI spammed Ashigaru units once I took Kyoto. I developed my unit production buildings and built balanced armies only to be confronted by stack upon stack upon stack of yari. The big battles to hold Kyoto were not interesting at all, but reminded me of FPS zombie killer games where all I had to do was quickly dispatch an enemy unit and turn to quickly dispatch the next to turn and quickly dispatch the next.
The only difficulty was managing the reinforcement system, which was a real bitch when I had to face three armies simultaneously. My reinforcements were coming from the opposite side of the map, and since I was hunkered up tight to defend against overwhelming numbers my units tended to rout together.
So managing the reinforcement system isn't the ideal interesting battle. Much rather have had 20 pro units (experienced, upgraded, led by a 5 star) to fight with my 20.
That niggle aside, here's a shot of Kyoto and some agents. Graphically, very well presented campaign worthy of its ancestor.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
When you take Kyoto you get a flagship, the Nihon Maru. The naval battles are still somewhat of a mystery to me, even after a dozen or so. Getting a crew to board is a little tricky, and if you get boarded you are likely to lose that ship. In the end I found that there is safety in numbers. I got lucky and caught a Chosokabe army being carried by their fleet, sunk the fleet and the army with it. I learned from their misfortune and had troop transports well supported. The Trade Ship operation is somewhat symbolic, but it works. Developing the foreign trade nodes is essential. I tended to scupper ships I captured, they always seemed to have lower stats than my homegrown boats.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
I was able to complete the campaign with my second Daimyo, my first having lived into his 50s. Honour is essential, seemed to be the most important stat in the game. When Geisha appear they present a real threat to family members. Metsuke are somewhat overpowered, very effective against ninja, geisha, other metsuke.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Kanesue is the Daimyo's brother, and is the point of teh spear for most military operations. Appointing the right people as commissioners and using them appropriately seemed to help make things work better. I kept Kanesue busy killing for more than 20 years. A geisha stabbed him and he spent some time recovering from the wound, but otherwise he was on the march or defending the frontier.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
As Shogun you get the Great Guard, a hardcore cavalry unit that I found to be quite effective. Get this unit around the backside and charge the rear of an enemy unit that is under fire from flaming arrows and the entire flank will collapse.
In the Battle of Kyoto, where Kanesue fought 7400 men from Uesugi, Chosokabe, and Hatano with 2300, this unit made the difference with a charge from ambush, first to remove a bow unit then to pound the wavering end of the enemy line. The subsequent rout gave my well-battered remaining units time to regroup and rest while reinforcements arrived from across the map, just in time for the last wave of Uesugi.
Cavalry units move very quickly. The units on the field all seem to move much quicker than I remember any movement from the original, but cavalry units haul ass.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Bump!
I'm loving the details like dying men impaled by several arrows writhing on the ground, though the hard edges of things is still a bit jarring. Almost all of these guys were still moving when I took the screenie :p

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
ichi, are my eyes failing me or is your S2TW anti-aliased ? :inquisitive:

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Here's a few from my Oda game, the first battle of Inokuchi. This one fought against the Tokugawa, the second would be fought against the Takeda which would be much blooder.
In case the board resizes the images click the links in spoiler for larger versions.

No, I left the settings as chosen by the game.
the game screen capture reformats from my wide-screen to the more square format you see here.
I'm not real tech savvy, enlighten me on anti-aliasing.
-
Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Um, aliasing is what you "naturally" get as the jagged (pixelated) edges of the visual objects in a game. Anti-aliasing (commonly abbreviated as AA), as you could figure out, is an optional yet almost always supported technology that works by smoothening out of the edges. Enabling it makes a direct performance hit on systems that are not of the highest end. Check this GIF for a practical comparison.
Although Shogun 2 Total War engine supports AA already (check Graphics options screen for that), it is impossible to make any changes to it for now (probably until a later patch that will bring DX11 support).

A couple of screenies from my new mod, Shogun 2: Terminator 2, where I replace all my soldiers with T-1000 models.

The T-1000 model horses are pretty cool, but the upkeep costs are staggering.
Plus, the units constantly wander off in search of Sarah Connor.

Have you used the unit's time-traveling special ability yet? Or does that require a special building upgrade?

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
So i've been playing around with the Shogun 2 Realism mod. A lot of fun. One of the biggest changes (aside from a ton of gameplay tweaks) is Yari Ashigaru actually fight with Yari, and use their spears in combat. Samurai are buffed and also a lot more important since you can't recruit them until you research a "way of the x" tech. So they're more powerful and also a ton more rare, if you lose a samurai unit it really sets you back a bit. Stats are also completely redone in the mod, providing much longer battles and the chance to enjoy the spectacle of the melee.
Here's a few screens from a Date campaign with Realism. Enjoy!

Got some real nice fog in a battle as the Shimazu, pity it wasn't a full army vs army battle. Nonetheless, here I was, waiting in the midst:

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Minosetsku fields: Over that ridge there's 4,000 Uesugi troops, led by their daimyo, all waiting for a chance to prove themselves to the new Oda Shogunate. They chose horrible weather to attack in, making the chokosabe bows much less effective.
A tense moment...

I do love the mist, but I hate fighting in it. This battle was great though, getting a proper hill is rare it seems.

:laugh4:
Boy I know how that feels. In previous TW games I never felt I had to build a decent navy, but in Shogun 2 you're really asking for it if you don't expand your naval power. A stack of Medium Bunes and bow ships are typically enough to win any sea battle through auto-calc. That is.. unless you run into the heavier hitters. :sweatdrop:
Good luck pushing out the invaders!
-
Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Thanks! As I struggle to pull together an army to get rid of them, I will push on. 12 more provinces and I win the campaign!
-
Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
It helps to have trade routes because you get a bit of line-of-sight along them so you can keep an eye out for fleets with armies if you pay attention.
-
Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
I always have a full fleet on each side of Honshu, around my westernmost/easternmost province. Granted, I've only played Chosokabe and Shimazu, so those fleets basically protected the west entirely, eventually. Though all the straits and bays in the inland seas between Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu are a nightmare early on in both campaigns. I had 4 fleets for a while, to be sure not to lose trade income because of surprise wako pirates and instantly go bankrupt.

Re: The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
Here's some random shots--two or three out of a campaign--all the rest were from the spring rice field in the battle generator
This was out of my Shimazu campaign. I just like the dynamic of the charging cavalry. Wish I had saved a battle replay so I could have removed the big banners

Thanks. Other than cropping, that shot is actually unaltered/unedited. It was one of those misty winter battlefields where all the trees look white, but there's no snow of the ground. The light was coming from behind, so it gave it that grey scale look.

Also, I been using a two year old GTX285 GPU, which is serviceable, but have a new GTX560 Ti from Newegg due in this week. The new GPU should allow me to notch the game resolution to my native 1920 X 1200 and force AA through the Nvidia control panel without slowing the game up too much.
Due to a slight miscalculation on my withholding, I got an embarrassingly large tax refund this year, and decided to blow some of it on a new graphics card.

Aftermath of the battle of Totomi fields, the Dragon of Sunpu defeats a force twice his size consisting of both Oda and Tokugawa forces - but the price is heavy.

I don't even know where to start with this. The Takeda clan imploded with the death of Takeda Shingen, but only 6 years after this shot his son has united the Hatorri lands and that light blue blob beneath his command. It made me (in the south as the hojo) VERY concerned.
I love this game, narratives pop up out of nowhere and get me attached to my generals and fearing my enemies in a real gameplay sense.

I like that last pic the most. All the destruction at the foot of a shinto-shrine.
The war with the Takeda has spiraled into a full fledged realm divide, with the Hojo Alliance consisting of the Hojo, the Oda, the Mori and the Date against the Ashikaga, the Takeda, the Chokosabe. The Christian Sagara (in firm control of Kyushu) and the Ikko-Ikki are also fighting for the Shogunate, surprisingly. It's been one heck of a fight with multiple areas of conflict. The Mori are fighting on Shinkoku and Kyushu against the Sagara and Chokosabe respectively while myself, the Oda and the Date struggle in central Honshu.
