Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
There already was a thread about this game, but as it was an anouncement in 2009 I thought let's make a new thread.
As most know this game WILL become awesome.
It seems closed Betas are distributed. (for more info click here.)
I would like to know how many people here are going to get this game. Since this game is quite hard for beginners and really needs teamwork to make it fun (hard to find people who are willing to work together).
Also there's this mod called Rising Storm which is based on the Pacific campaign of 1941-45 (Japanese and Americans:book:), which can be interesting. Also for more info click here.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Thanks for the update! I am looking forward to this.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I am currently waiting for this to come out, definitely on my to-buy list. Played over 100 hours of RO and going on 500 hours of Darkest Hour.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I used to have RO and the mod DH. There was also another mod, took place in the desert with the English, but I don't think it was as popular as DH, the times I logged in, I hardly saw any servers.

Same goes for me.
I never played the first one more than 5 hours. Mainly because of the lack of players and the game being very ugly. I would really like to find a community/clan to play RO2 with; which in my opinion really makes it fun.
The mod which took place in the desert was Mare Nostrum.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I honestly cannot wait for RO2, I loved Red Orchestra, I can't wait for this to come out.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Highly unlikely but I wish they included Romanians and Italians in this game; they were there too.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I've logged an obscene amount of hours on RO/DH. The game was a perfect fit for me in terms of my favorite historical period of interest (WW2, Eastern Front) and my preferred focus in gaming (realism). IMO, even after all these years, it is by far the best FPS out there. It has literally ruined the COD, Battlefield, and MOH series for me. I cannot play them now without thinking "man this sucks compared to RO and now DH".
That being said, I am super excited and also super nervous about RO:HOS. Tripwire seems to be positioning the game as the anti-COD (which is GOOD), but seem to have included some of the same elements that make COD such a lame experience (recon planes, implausible small arms). It is all about the game play, though, and I trust that Tripwire will deliver an unmatched experience. Their new game play modes sound awesome!
Shellshocker: Why RO2 Will Beat COD: Black Ops
Quote:
Red Orchestra 2 is built on novel ideas, fueled by the independent spirit Gibson has instilled into his company (Tripwire released Killing Floor in 2009 and published The Ball in October) and the frame-of-mind that shooters should take advantage of what the PC platform can do, not simply be a higher-resolution, easier-to-control version of what’s available on consoles.
“PC shooter fans have come to expect less than we have in the past,” says Gibson. “It’s kind of sad—there’re either no mod tools or all these strange restrictions. So, in a way, players have higher expectations for polish, but lower expectations for feature sets. They aren’t bad games—they’re not. All these games that are being developed right now are great achievements for a console, but they’re not pushing what’s possible on the PC.”

RO only looks ugly in supuer-huge tank maps and poorly made custom maps (i.e. 99% of custom maps). I still think the game looks fairly decent on detailed urban maps and the smaller open ones.

Wow, never heard of a mod that was being developed for a game that hasn't even been released. Looks cool though, RO in the Pacific sounds like a great idea. I wonder if Japanese officers get swords!

I'm still not entirely comfortable with the addition of the MKb 42, but I have to give them credit for doing their homework on the bayonet lug and optics.

I'm thinking of either to do it over Steam or to do it retail. Perhaps there's a box copy as well?

There should be one. After all, they got box cover art :P
Check the site of Tripwire. (You can find a link on the steam page, which I've posted earlier)

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Not sure if I should have, but I just pre-ordered the deluxe edition. Ive got a feeling this can end really badly for me if I dont get some money into my bank soon.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Pre-ordered the delux version. TF2 hats here I come lol.
(That loyalty bonus is what really sealed the deal though. Everyone should do this.)

Red Orchestra 2 Release delayed to September 13th.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I want to pre-purchase badly but I can't bring myself to. I fall in the same place within the system requirements in this that I do in Bad Company 2, which is bad news since BC2 runs like garbage. I'm above minimum on CPU and recommended on everything else, which sounds fine on paper but system reqs don't tell you if its CPU or GPU heavy. In Bad Company 2's case, not having a quad core basically amounts to a slide show, no matter what GPU you have because its bottlenecked.
I'm pretty annoyed that there's not going to be a demo for this for me to check it out. I'll just have to ask people with similar processors how the beta runs, and try and convince my stingy friend who bought the DDE to let me try the beta for 5 minutes just to get a performance check.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
The larger beta, open to all who have pre-ordered, is scheduled to commence around August 30th, although they made clear that the date is subject to change dependent on how quickly they work through the worst of the bugs.
Countdown mode looks great! I used to exclusively play Search and Destroy back when Call of Duty (or was it COD2 :dizzy2: - the one with the Brécourt map) was the WW2 shooter of choice. I liked it because it was so much more realistic, but it did suck to get hit early and have to sit around for 10+ minutes while people camped. Countdown seems to be a great hybrid of that and RO's standard game type, forcing people to play smarter and more realistically while still keeping a brisk pace. I hope it catches on.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
20 minutes of footage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXHWPzTPskY
Wish more of these beta videos would have some bolt action rifle gameplay. It seems like 70% of the footage from all of them is the MP40.
Third person animations still look robotic to me. This was a problem with RO1 as well. The characters stand up perfectly straight like a board when they're walking.

Quote:
Set for release on September 13th, Red Orchestra 2 can’t get here soon enough for me. Red Orchestra 2 is going to deliver an intense, hardcore game that will also have a high quotient of fun for casual FPS fans. Based on what I’ve played so far Red Orchestra 2 is going to dominate wargamers’ hard drives for a very long time to come – and it’s going to replace Call of Duty on my hard drive when I’m looking for a military FPS fix.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta

The music in this clip sounds like something out of a silent film.
Synthesized faux-orchestral music really bugs me.

Yes. Some people are saying you will have to restart Steam to see it, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the application to know if that is accurate. Watch this space today for an official announcement, and, presumably, complete instructions.

I had to delete files to make my controls work!
How did you like the game? Took me a bit to mess with the controls, but I really enjoyed it. I think they kept the realism pretty much intact. I played on some realism servers, and there are some new gamey things (the shift key extra zoom), but there are also some realistic improvements, so it pretty much balanced out. I think the SMGs probably need to be nerfed a bit in accuracy and possibly even damage.
Also, knowing the Danzig copy by heart was... helpful. ~;)
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Only got around to play on two maps which were at the opposite ends really: one a tank map and the other gritty close combat, can't remember the names. I was happy just to see a server list and jump in so did not think about realism servers.
Overall it felt OK but I guess it is still early and there are still some controls I have not checked out.

Need to get used to the controls, plus the sensitivity is very, very odd.

However, my sensitivity is not consistent. I don't mean it is lagging, but the movement is slow, fast, slow, fast, repeat ad infinitum. =/

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
People with similar system's posts about performance have reassured me enough that I can buy this without hesitation within the next few days.
You have to tread carefully with a dual core in 2011.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Got it, enjoying the beta so far. Had a couple nice reflex shots with rifles.
The game runs well on my rig - which was made three years ago.
Figuring out the 'use' key was a pain.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I'm glad firefight is in, just so I can sample weapons in the restricted classes, but mostly so my friend (who's new to PC games and only FPS experience in the last few years is Goldeneye Wii and Bad Company 2 on PC) can ease himself into the game in a less punishing environment.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I finally found a server where both sides generally had their act together and were interested in taking caps (instead of messing with the new controls, playing around with the guns, or dicking around the map) and I was really impressed. I was initially apprehensive about some of the new features, but the game still rewards tactical game play and teamwork, possibly even more than the first. There's surely no run n' gun on Fallen Fighters. People were actually choosing to go bolt with plenty of assault class slots open, as the SMG is the harder weapon to be successful with.
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
The deed is done.
But since I'm poor/cheap, I'll have to wait until the release day to play it. Cya then.

Changed my mind. Firefight is fun in a 32 person server. Terrible in a 64 person server.
Fallen Fighters on Territory has to be my favourite in Beta so far. Sniping with either the sniper or anti-tank is sooo satisfying.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Broke down and installed the beta. The core game seems fine - bolting Russians and Germans feels good as does hunkering down behind cover in panic because you're surrounded.
The silly weapons and class progression stuff seems broken / simply not there. It feels really incomplete for a game that's going to be launched in a few weeks. It's not like it's missing content, which would be very understandable. These are systems that are supposed to be in place for the game and Tripwire basically just hasn't gotten around to them yet. What's up with that?
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Unlocks are not added to the game since it still is beta. Also, they are testing small amounts of stuff at the same time.

I don't think it's insanely crazy to judge the final release based off the beta's state 8 days before the final release is due.
If Tripwire needs more time (and they do) they should push the release back to a realistic time.
As for not playing it, canceling my pre-order will get me my $45 back to put into working games and/or computer hardware, and then I'll get RO2 when it's on sale a few months later (and when it's actually playable).
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
I think someone on the RO2 forums put it best: "people were expecting an early release and are shocked to find that the beta is actually in a late beta phase."
It reflects positively on TWI that they're actually treating it like a beta by taking bug reports and patching the game. So many developers treat beta as a synonym for "demo."

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Thoughts on the game so far?
-
Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad closed beta
Loving it - but its not for everyone. Action happens in short bursts and its easy to fall into a dying spree if you're careless or the enemy has taken an advantageous position. The weapons take some getting used to, sniper rifles especially - i dont think i've hit a single person with one. There are a few bugs here and there. A lot of servers seem to be struggling with high ping rates, and it can be hard for me to find a good one, but all that said, i've found it a great game. Its one that you really have to put time into - and I dont mean like grinding. Think of it like battlefield, except about 10x as hardcore when it comes to the "Dont run around like an idiot" line of thinking. Unless you're moving from cover to cover, sprinting around is a good way to get capped.
Each kill i've managed to make has been incredibly rewarding, and sometimes a harrowing experience. Like when you're desperately holding the last point on a territory map and the enemy just doesnt stop coming. Or when you drop a machine gunner only for a tank to roll around the corner and make your position...
