Capo di Tutti Capi IV [Concluded]
– 2:00pm Eastern – A hotel suite in New York[/B]
“Call Moretti again, Dean.”
“No answer, Jerry. I think he’s gonna be ticked…”
“I know, I know; but how in heck was I supposed to know the Doctor’d say I had mumps this morning. Of all the crazy things. I didn’t even remember our lunch with Willie until just now – you know that. Try him again in another ten.”
“Okay. I called the guy at NBC radio about the rehearsal already so…”
Both men turned to the TV in the suite when they heard the name “Moretti” from the newscaster. They watched, stunned, as the anchor relayed the news: Willie Moretti, reputed crime boss, gunned down at lunch at Joe’s Elbow Room in Cliffside, New Jersey. There was an uncomfortable silence at the end of the news announcement. Martin was the first to speak.
“All in all, Jerry, I’m not too sad you got the mumps….”
4 October 1951 – 8:00pm Eastern – A hotel suite in Cuba
Lansky cradled the phone gently and walked out on the balcony.
“It’s confirmed.”
“Well, I didn’t think the news guys were making it up, but thanks. Crap. Frankie was against it, and I hadn’t made up my mind yet.”
“Anastasia didn’t want to wait. You and your omerta tradition, you know. Willie mouthing off at the hearings didn’t sit very well.”
“I know. I agree even, but I figured his brains were for mush anyway so it wouldn’t matter. Well, I don’t think the Commission will take any action, do you?”
“It’s the way they were leaning anyway…the penalty will be minor.”
Luciano nodded his agreement. He swirled his glass briefly before taking a drink. He looked meaningfully at Lansky.
“Since we’re speaking about Jersey…”
Lansky paused, and then what Luciano was leading up to came to him in a fully realized whole.
“Again? Didn’t we get enough people killed the last time?”
“Bruder, you know the numbers better than me, so you can answer your own question, no?”
Meyer paused in thought, fixing Charlie with a measured stare. There was no real anger in that stare – they had shared too much, achieved too much, together for that – and Luciano was correct about the numbers.
“I get it, Charlie, I really do. Profits in narcotics and Russian furs tripled for the 4 months the Pentangelis ran Fatlington. It’s a squalid little Jersey Shore town with a port large enough for our purposes and if we’re running it – however unofficially – it becomes a cash cow for the whole Eastern Seaboard. But the chaos, Charlie, it’s like the whole place is meschuge. Vegas doesn’t have that kind of margin but at least the people there aren’t maniacs….”
Luciano just looked at his friend, waiting. Meyer was anything but stupid. A brief pause was enough time.
“I see.”
Luciano nodded.
“Well then, paisan, since the Commission has already decided, my role is pretty simple. I’ll get the contacts rolling. So be it. “
4 October 1951 – 8:15pm Eastern – A hotel suite in Fatlington, New Jersey
The cool breeze felt good on his face after the hot, smoke-filled session of poker. This game, though technically illegal, wasn’t likely to get Fatlington’s top cop in trouble – after all the other players included a federal judge, two city councilman and His Honor TosaInu. Commissioner Fermanagh, looking out over the railing of the suite at the Hotel Abbatoir, staring over the dark Atlantic.
A cold chill ran down Fermanagh’s spine, causing him to straighten in surprise as he shivered. He felt himself quivering with…fear? Shaking off the feeling, he muttered to himself:
“Just the wind, you old mick, just the wind – nothing to worry about.”
As he turned back to the game, though, he didn’t – just couldn’t quite – shake the feeling he’d had. A cold October wind was blowing toward Fatlington.

The Executive Meeting Room (Small Ballroom)
Fatlington Convention Center
Fatlington, New Jersey
“…and so to summarize,” intoned Commissioner Fermanagh, “It’s happening again.”
The hundred-odd Fatlings gathered in the room were restless, but not really incredulous. Fatlington’s recent history with trouble was well known to all present.
“Governor TosaInu may not be a direct part of things anymore, but he still has enough in the way of contacts to have tipped us off. Moreover, he instantly mobilized the Guard to quarantine Fatlington for the immediate future. The only surprise was how quickly Federal authorities supported the effort. We’ve got troops from Fort Dix supporting the Guard and state police and the Coast Guard has cordoned off sea and Inland Waterway access completely.”
Fermanagh paused, looking out over those gathered – Fatlington’s ‘best and brightest.’
“I don’t know what we have done to deserve this mafia attention; why they keep trying to undermine this city. We DO, however, know how to deal with it. We will reconvene all of you as our next Committee of Vigilance and you will use the established procedures to weed out the Mafiosi in our midst.”
Grim nods and an expectant silence were the only comments on Fermanagh’s statement.
“Your first task will be to select a Director for the committee to oversee the…the…executions. Choose carefully. That Director will be protected by four security officers during their tenure. As you recall, they don’t vote for who to execute, but they do the rest of it.”
Fermanagh paused.
“It’ll come as no surprise that I’ve been worried about this for months. To prepare, I have had a number of detectives and protection specialists placed in your midst secretly. The will serve as a valuable means to help the committee further its efforts.”
Another pause.
“So if you haven’t, make sure you familiarize yourself with the Committee procedures, there’s copies on the table here, and get busy selecting your Director….and Holy Mother pray for us all.”

The Anachronism Hour with Saucy Slice
"Welcome back to the show, this is DJ Saucy Slice broadcasting from the very top of Radio City, at the Plaza del Universo in the heart of Fatlington, New Jersey. It is now 2:32 in the afternoon which means we are smack dab in the middle of The Anachronism Hour, which is the part of the show where I play music you've never heard before, not of this era, from records I pulled out of their dusty sleeves that have been sitting in my basement since the before the war. Or maybe this is new music from artists never before seen. But whatever the case, it is not your standard fare, and we will bring you back to your regularly scheduled contemporary music later. For now, enjoy the freak show, ladies and gentlemen.
That was..... "Saliva". Never heard of them? Me neither, but they're good. Now it's time for the News Cruise! with Askthepizzaguy."
*VROOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM*
"So, Ask, tell us what's in the news while you're driving around town in your spiffy Jaguar!"
Askthepizzaguy: "Well Saucy, it seems that mafia kingpin Willie Moretti has been gunned down in nearby Cliffside, New Jersey. The authorities are cracking down on the city of Fatlington and the surrounding areas in anticipation of the coming retaliatory strikes. Word on the street is, things are gearing up for a full-blown mafia war, and no one will be safe from the brutal, relentless carnage! Truly, this is a disaster of epic proportions, soon to become a national tragedy, just like the last three times this has happened."
"Thanks for your report, Ask, stay safe out there. Well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and heartless gangsters out there, it sounds like things are going to get real bad, real fast. But don't worry, times have been bad for a long while now. Saucy Slice has been there for you and will continue to be there for you.
I understand today there's a meeting at the convention center to discuss who will be selected to lead the Committee of Vigilance. I think it is important to maintain a working government even under these stressful times, and as an all-American pro-democracy freedom-loving patriot, I encourage you to attend and place your selection for the Director who will lead us out of this mess, and towards a safer and better tomorrow.
My fans have suggested that I run for Director of the Committee, but I am currently opposed to that idea. I have a full-time job working here at Radio City, and my function is as vital as it ever has been.... to play you gnarly tunes that will mellow you out even when gangstas everywhere be trippin, yo. Now let's talk politics for a minute.
"McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves rolled" - Senator Joe McCarthy. I agree with this statement. It would seem that once again, our city is infested with the Reds. Has been since before the war. We need someone who will stand against not only the criminal underworld, but also the very traitors to America themselves, and send them back to Russia or China or Mexico or wherever they bloody come from. I don't know, I didn't study very hard in geography class.
All right, that's enough politics. You know I'm a clown at heart, and politics is not my thing. I don't want to talk about politics anymore. And that concludes News Cruise. Up next, your all-request hour with your host DJ Saucy Slice. Stick around, don't touch that dial!"
If you want to request a song, dial 1-855-DJ-SLICE. He'll serve your ears something hot and fresh in thirty minutes or less.

Re: Capo di Tutti Capi IV
Well Dave, the effect of the Director is to break ties in lynches and to have the Director immune to kills and unable to act at night.
This early on, the Director is not easily able to oppose the will of the town on selecting lynchees; later we might have to worry about selecting a mafia who could cause the wrong lynch results.
Immunity to kills could benefit anyone; blocking actions could help the town if a mafia is unable to act, and definitely hurts town detectives and doctors.
So a regular townie is a good call, they get to survive and the town knows we have a townie in control, and they don't have any actions to lose while at the same time they don't have a chance to go become a mafia themselves.
The remaining problem is simply to confirm that our first Director is a townie. We don't want wasted detective results but a detective would need more than one investigation until they get the actual role of our selected player (repeat scans needed to get the role, unless they first scan criminal but that's pretty simple, and a deterrant for mafia putting themselves up for Director election).
Also, we can avoid unnecessary duplicated effort by our town detectives with another simple strategy, requiring no exposure or risk to the detectives. Just say that any detectives in, say, the last 20 people alphabetically are the one(s) who have to investigate our first director. So we'll know we have someone investigate the director as the chances are rather low there's not at least one detective, and the other detectives don't have to worry about wasted effort and can do what they like.
Of course, if we assume we vote out the first Director in a couple of days the first Director is again not too crucial, and nobody has to use any abilities or attempt to investigate the first Director at all.
As he put himself up for it I'll select: Yaropolk on good odds he's a townie who just wants the position, or see if he doesn't anymore given a concrete plan. I'll of course not be re-electing the Director, whoever wins, next time unless we're sure he's a townie as above.

Re: Capo di Tutti Capi IV
Well I'd support you if you agree with my proposal and we have consensus from others, that we want a townie as a Director who will stay Director for a while. Might take a detective three or four days, so that's through your re-election period but it'd be worth it, just to be sure you're town.

"Well Johnny Huge, I tend to agree that my loyal Fatling fans are among the most devoted fans in all of these United States. Even if I don't want to be their leader as I have previously and vociferously expressed, they will continue to clamor for Saucy gaining political power. But as I said before, I'm not a politician, and unless I see reason otherwise, I think the time has come for someone with more experience or more enthusiasm to take office. I'm just a guy running a radio program, man.
Now tell me something Johnny Huge, is it pills, or do you have some sort of exercise regimen? And do the girls like it, or does it scare them off?

I'm not going to do the usual politician thing of explaining how much more wonderful life would be in Fatlington would be if you select me to be your Director. Excellent, you sound like the kind of compassionate conservative this city needs. As it stands, our city is already under siege from the Feds, and I'm not just talking about the g-men. Re: Capo di Tutti Capi IV
"Excellent question, DJ Slice. While I don't think Fatlington's tax policy is quite under the Director of the Committee of Vigilance's jurisdiction, I'm definitely for lower taxes that are friendly to business. As any good resident of Fatlington knows, our fine city is built on tourism. With such icons as the picturesque beaches, the Hotel Abbatoir, and of course Club 30, people flock to Fatlington from up and down the East Coast. However, there would be nowhere to flock *to* if it wasn't for the fine businesses in the area. A tourist destination with nowhere to eat and nothing to buy is not much of a tourist destination, and we need to ensure that our tax rate allows businesses to continue to set up shop here and stay competitive. Therefore, this candidate for Director is behind the businesses one hundred percent... and thus by extension behind the people."

"It sounds as though you're the right man for the right job at the right time. Read his lips, ladies and gentlemen! NO NEW TAXES!!!
Candidate Hankerchief will fight for American businessmen and the loyal patriotic Fatlings they employ! Candidate Hankerchief will work hard to protect American capitalism and never surrender to the Godless communist bastards!
Well, I'm sold. You've got my support, and I urge my devoted fans to install Director Chief Hanky immediately, and allow me to continue to run this radio station and spend time with my son, who happens to be an intern here at the station. Thank you once again for your time, Chief Director-elect General Hanky. I know you're very busy, so please by all means go campaign for the people, and please slap these bumper stickers on every car you find.
