A couple changes were recently made in the forum structure. The Tavern became a category of its own so that the Gameroom, Frontroom, and Backroom all got main full main index listings. In addition, the previous restrictions on viewing the Backroom were lifted. The Backroom is now visible and readable by everyone, even unregistered members. However, the old restrictions on posting in the Backroom remain. It is an opt-in system and requires approval from the Backroom staff. Instructions on how to apply can be found here. If you have already done that and still cannot post, you should contact the Backroom Moderators, as they are the ones that approve requests to post there.

The Backroom is visible to all so the wise will be scared away. The Backroom only allows the select to post so that only those with high quality tripe to post can add to the refuse heap.
Is this going to enable searching of the Backroom?

Nice. Maybe this will entice some newer members to apply for Backroom membership.
There needs to be a sticky in the back-room with a link to the opt-in membership. That should help the newer people do it.
Or perhaps a link to a page where TinCow has it made very simple for you to opt-in or not.
I am a bit worried that spyders are going to index all of it. I would rather have my early thoughts and ideas not be recorded publicly for some intern to dig up down the line should I decide to actually get into politics.

I would prefer the backroom to be unviewable. When I am done with this account or the org in general, I will have to delete my account and all the posts with it, which is sad.

We do understand that this is an inconvenience for some members, but please understand that it's better for the Org as a whole. Our stats show that the Backroom is a significant draw on the Org, and having it hidden like it was reduced the number of people who would find it and post in it. Having the Backroom open to viewing prior to registration is for the good of the site as a whole.
I actually see it as a good thing for the long term. People could potentially be drawn to register in order to get into the backroom and join the fray. I remember years ago some member making me so mad I thought about what I was going to say to them the next day. The search function is also great for calling people on their ideas when they flip-flop the issues :)
Only problem with that is that people change their opinions and views over-time. For example, I was once posting something when another patron took a statement of mine from the past out of context in order to attempt to discredit that argument and it took around 3 replies to re-correct them on a mistake which I corrected in the original thread, but it causes awkwardness. There are even members who have had a colourful past and changed their views/opinions since, if they were repeatedly bombarded by something they said years and years ago, which they long since stated they don't hold that view, then it becomes rather silly.Quote:

Well, your example is extreme, and I agree most peoples opinions do change over time, and the american political obsession with flip flopping is overrated. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of finding contradictory stuff about someone you are arguing with, more recent like, such as in one thread I say I am allergic to eggs and in another thread I argue that Waffle House has better omelets than Dennys.
That I agree with. I have no issues with people who hold up their hands and say they were wrong about a view, though those who do like 20 interviews in a week and they contradict eachother is a different thing, such as that Waffle House one.Quote:

Well I for one don't really post much in the backroom even though I read almost all of the threads in there because I'm woefully uninformed compared to the rest of you guys. So maybe if you guys stopped being so smart, you could attract more members. Just a thought...
I can't see the Backroom at all now. And the User Group list doesn't have the Backroom.
