Was curious what the hardware vs. software situation was amongst us.
I can get a fluid battle with about 3000 at 1600x1200x32 with all settings maxed. Flaming arrows hit the FPS but not too bad.
At 1024x768x32 with everything at low and a few at medium, I can scrap with 8000 to 9000 depending on the situation. Better FPS at altitude.
I'd love to see what 15,000 looks like, but I don't think it's possible.

The largest battle I've had so far was slightly under 3000, don't remember, possibly 2700. In any case, I wasn't running Fraps, but I didn't notice any effect at all. Played just the same as if there were only 500. This with everything at Highest level, AA at low, 1600x1200x32.Quote:

OH! STRONGLY suggest you monitor and manage your, CPU, GPU and Case temps!!!! You may have a hot system and that may be effecting your results more than anything else.

I saw the same question at the IL2 flight sim site. It was interesting to see the differences in how people were playing the game and how "accessible" it was to different PCs and see if the recomended specs are realistic at all.
I'm waiting to see if someone shows the numbers for a REALLY fast machine. There's probably someone out there with a FX-53 CPU, a Gig of mega-RAM and a 6800 Ultra and a 21" screen. I'd love to see the battles that thing could pull off.
By the by, my machine doesn't seem hot at all. The sides are quite cool. A benefit to living in a cold #!*#%$ climate.

Well its also an important question for MP. So far its been pretty disappointing as 3v3 on large setting (total of about 9k men) appears to be too much.
Camera and mouse felt like on ice skates when having about 4.5k men (4 armies) in SP. I got a 2400+ with 1 gig ram and a FX 5900XT. My settings where maxed out on 1280x960.

I haven't tried MP yet, it'll be interesting to see how my systems plus broadband handles things.
Beirut, laughing just a little (no insult intended), hand testing the *sides* of your computer case isn't the way to test for a hot system or video card.
You're 9800 pro *should* have an on-board temp sensor. I'm not sure what software will read the sensor, check your Manual.
To check your CPU and Case temps....oh! BTW, your *Case* temp refers to the termperature INSIDE the case, not the temp of the actual case (maybe there's a bit of confusion).

The is a VERY useful tool. Unfortunately, the author is ending futher development, depending upon your motherboard manufacturer, you may have been provided with equivalent software. You can also check your temps in the BIOS.
HEAT is the number one reason for slowdows, as well as a number of other ills. It's the first thing to check and manage. You've got a great CPU and an excellent card, I don't think you should have experienced FPS hit with the flaming arrows, etc.

Just tried a maxed out peasant 6 way custom battle... approx 14500 troops on screen on the Gaul Grasslands map, no settlement, no weather effects, but still maxed out on the gfx setting as I use in the game... Serious slide show territory...
On my AthlonXP 2600+ with 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800 GT and Audiology 2 ZS...
Using Nvidia 66.31 drivers, plus upto date drivers for everything else.. No o/c on anything...
Will try to find a max number...
I have regular battles involving 4k+ and a few that have gone over 6k and everything but sieges run well for me. Of course, I am playing on the lowest settings. My comp stats are: P4 1.6ghz, 512mb PC2100 DDR Ram, GF2MX200. I play at 800x600 for battles as well, as you can see the GF2 is whats holding me back. Used to have a Ti4200 in this but the damn thing died on me. Still, i'm suprised at how well the game runs on this video card.
Have played a 3v3 with large units and it seemed to run just fine on 1024x768x32 with settings on medium.
you were there on that battle CBR, how did it run for you? I think your sytem is similiar to mine:

I always thought the "put your hand on it and does it feel hot" was the way. Oops. I'll try what you said. But this word "manual", I see the letters but know not of what you speak. Manual... I'll have to look that up.
I might have overstated the FPS hit with the flaming arrows. I'm not sure if it's me seeing the animation get a bit choppy or if the animation itself is a bit choppy. I'll play around and see if it improves.
I'm going to Try Bob the Insane's total max out. Should be fun.

That battle was laggy for me. I was on TeamSpeak2 with both Yuuki and Krypta and they had lag too. Even drawing a line was difficult as sometimes it didnt draw where you clicked first. I cant believe its TeamSpeak causing it but if we can get 6 people who has PC's like we had or better we can try and run some 3v3's and test.

From my experiance, Roger Wilco is a little better then teamspeak, causes no lag...
Ha! Had over 17,000 troops at 1024x768x32 (I refuse to play at 16-bit colour)with everything at low or off.
It... went... very... slowly.
I'd rather have the highest eye candy and less troops. 1600x1200x32 with everything maxed and about 3000 troops. Just beauty.

I got about 5 fps most of the time (measured with Fraps) and even with my lowered settings it feels just like it was to play it.

Ive played around with this a bit and RTW seems vastly more processor based than anything else.
Playing multiplayer games with only Humans (no AI) I can get smooth battles with up to 8,000 units. 8,000-14,000 runs OK. It's playable.
Add in an AI or two and my computer starts to chug at 8000 units.
In a custom 3v3 with all AI controlled players I get around 10 FPS, pause the game however and everything runs smooth. Changing video card settings does absolutely nothing and the game is only using around 300MB of RAM.
As for what 15,000 looks like. It looks ok but not that "epic". Mainly because its 6 different factions with all different colours, all moving in different directions. It looks like a swirl of chaotic colours with no direction.
The dead after the battles looks like someones thrown up all over the map though, that looks cool.

I was in that 3v3 battle with large units. It was very slow and not really playable, but we played it out to the end. The replay is about as slow as the actual battle. That replay gives me 4 or 5 fps measured with FRPS, and it drops to 3 fps with one volley of flaming arrows in the air and 2 fps with two volleys of flaming arrows in the air. I have Win98se, AMD xp2400+ cpu, 256 MB RAM, ATI 9800 Pro 128 MB. My graphic settings are about middle of the road or a little above.
Hm looks like I should have bought that 3000+ cpu instead of new gfx card ~:confused:

has handeled about 5000 Units, only Problem: Textures on battlefield are very low and shadows don´t work. But units are fine in high detail just as the buildings...
I was positively surprised by that, as the demo didn´t work on my system. Anyway, I bought Rome..(these total war games are addictive..)

One of the first things i did when i got the game was tried a HUGE battle. Had every setting on highest (except AA which was at medium). Setup a bridge battle with 5 armies all fighting against me (just for a laugh :D ). Must have been about 10000 troops - RTW warned me i had exceeded the recommended limit (etc etc)
When the game started it wasn't too bad, but as the enemy troops all started crossing the bridge and my 8 archer units let loose with fire arrows :dizzy2: i started getting about 1 frame per 5 seconds :(

I don't know how many I can handle but that historical MP battle with julii + senate vs. gaul and germania got a little slow at the start but still pretty smooth....that must have been about 5000

I'm using 1024X8(summat or other, my number memory is horrible) because that's the highest on the basic options and I haven't felt it worth editing a higher one in place. I had to turn glints off, detailed shadows off, building from highest to medium, grass from highest to medium, large unit sizes. I was fine with grass and buildings on highest until I attacked a large city; it got too jerky to be comfortable. I can manage about 8,000 men on these, but I fought my first bridge battle today in custom mode and it got jerky with about 26 units. I have 2X antistrophic filtering on as a ATI control panel override. I don't use fire arrows, so no idea what they would do to my framerate.
Glints are broken; when they are working correctly I might try them again.
I am thinking this does not bode too well for MP.
As I've said before the game gets large slowdowns when you're playing with AI. Even MTW chugged in a 4v4 with AI controlled players on my computer.Quote:
