Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Yes that's right, ME:TW is under development for Rome!
The Strategic side of things is in a quite advanced stage, but the Tactical Battles have had virtually no work done as yet. Why? Because we need graphics artists! If you're interested and capable, please let me know. ~:)
For more details, visit our forums over at the Chamber of Records.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
That's looking stunning Encaitar, top job with the map!
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Nice job, Encaitar, I wish you all the good luck with it!

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
When I checked the ME:TW forums and saw that, I was just awe inspired. I mean, its totally complete! The cities are all renamed, factions designated, symbols there, everything! I was like "Holy Crap!" I wish I could help. But I'm already in Fourth Age : Total War. But my skins aren't that great anyways =P. Anyways, I'll be sure to keep an eye on this. And please don't feel us as a Competator, I mean, we're all just doing this for Tolkien aren't we =P.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Not at all Tiger. You guys have got a great new concept there for a Tolkien mod, and it looks like you're producing some excellent work. Best of luck with it. ~:)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Does this mean that METW for VI is finished, or have you abandoned that now to concentrate on RTW?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Looks cool, I really cant wait.
Seems like you have to be careful with these Middle-Earth based mods now though. look what happened to the Middle-Earth mod for Morrowind. A fan built, free mod that was shut down overnight after two years of development. Seems that certain lawyers got in touch with the development team and scared the hell out of them.
Just a thought.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Well, why not just merge togethor and have a sort of MTW style, where instead of Early, High and Late you just have First age (hmm...), Second Age (hobbit!), Third Age and Fourth age?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Wow I'm really looking forward to this! So far great work.
As far as legality is concerned you can always change the names of everything and there is nothing they can do about it really. So instead of copy-writed terms and names make up something similier, names like "Gondor" or "Rivendell" might be be changed to "Goondor" and "Rivendale". If you see what I mean, but I wouldn't worry about that yet keep up the good work ~:)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Hey, wait a minute, why is the Lonely Mountain a town? Surely the dragon from 'The Hobbit' would have destroyed all life on the mountain, leaving it deserted forever?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Nope, right after that the Dwarves reinhabited it. Infact, during the War of the Ring Sauron sent Easterlings and Orcs to besiege Dale and Ereboer because he thought they could turn the tides of Peleoner Fields.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Just one word WOW.....
I just cant wait for this one:)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
wow... this is a great mod. ~:)
any unit pictures yet?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Nope, hence why we're recruiting graphics artists. ~:)

that is a great shame. :(

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
What exactly do you need done?
D
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Unit graphics (i.e. what you see in battles).
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Encaitar I'd like to help out, but I'm not the talent of DJ or Hoggy. I don't even know where to get started exactly, but I'd imagine we would want new 3d models as well as just skins for the models. However If I could see a way to do it clearly and had the software tools needed I'd consider it a great honor to help this one out.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
My only caveat is that I don't want to use WETA or any other comercial designs for anything, I know they're popular but we should avoid any potential legal issues with Big Biz, could we make first and second age campaigns too? Its nice to see all the great work you've been doing.
Where available we should use primary source material for unit design and creation. The kids can get BFME if they want the movies.

That caveat is already part of ME:TW policy. ~:)
There's quite a bit of concept art and models for MTW to base designs off, so it's mainly a matter of building the models and skins for RTW. (as though that's a small thing!)
If you're up for it, drop me a pm or email.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Thanks Encaitar. But considering the effort involved I don't want to do so much and not be allowed to contribute original art and designs to the team. Good Luck. I sense DJ and Hoggy will return soon enough to this one...

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Very kewl campmap there ...
i cant encourage u enuff to werk hard on this, coz ima big fan of LotR.
I could lend my researching hands for unit accurateness and and prolly write desc_txt files for the various buildings and units ... ( im no good at gfx).
If u would like another hand drop me a mail : masterhahn@yahoo.com

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
You should make beornings as a faction, too.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
can we get a guide on how to create the campaign map.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
There's a good guide in the "Guides, Tutorials and Tools" forum:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=39456
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
thx for the tip to the map making guide... Right now my chances of making a mod are slim to none, but if I can teach myself enough about modding - as I know absolutely nothing now - I might actually start getting serious. Those amazing screens are really inspiring, the game looks amazing.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Nice to see you guys doing the third age. I really hope that any of my work inspires someone in your mod to do a even better job and completly outdo any of my work. So then I in turn will be inspired to surpass the other guy in skill.
Let the competition commence! :duel:
Anyway I wish you guys the best of luck and look foreward to a little friendly competition ~

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Many thanks to those who offered their help with this mod. We have found two new people to do the unit graphics, and you can check out some of their work over at the METW forums:

I would strongly suggest you consult an Intellectual Property lawyer ASAP, I think the big boys feel threatned if your work competes with one of their licences (eg. BFME) and it's always good to know where you stand before they try anything, make sure you find out about what you can and can't do according to your local laws, if you play it by the book, they wont bother sinking money into a legal endevour that will net them nothing.
Not that they wont try to scare you!
Actually, I'm surprised there is no discussion about this at your forums.... maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
I say go for it as soon as you ask you will be told to cease all work. That goes for anyone doing Gamesworkshop mods as well. Just keep working on it and keep it low key. Find one forum to do your discusssing until it is released. Just my perspective. If you ask permission you know exactly what the answer will be. I saw it happen with Doom , Doom 2, and Duke Nukem, Quake , Quake2. Everything is cool until someone decides to ask for permission then, of course, the answer is no because they are not making any money and you are competing with their games they are releasing. They only ones that get released are the ones who do not ask for permission.I have no intention of buying the game they released because I like the Total War series. I would take a different stance if you were going to charge for the mod but this is free, do not make the mistake in contacting them.If they contact you go underground. Do not throw away your hard work. I would like the knights with the winged helms as a unit just to play around with(anyway I could talk you into releasing just that .cas?)
If you decide to take this underground until completion, do not forget to let me in on the release. 8)

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Those units at your website are awesome-they look professionally done. Keep up the good work!
On the positive side of the legal aspect, since the METW for VI hasn't been asked to desist (I think) that bodes well. After all "Anything not explicitly forbidden is allowed." Just keeping it low key (perhaps no stories in PC games magazines?) should help, but I don't really know much about how those drains on society (aka Lawyers) find out about mods. Anyways, the best of luck to you.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Any progress with the mod? Is there a problem with www.metw.net? Do you know when the mod will be released? Sorry to be so impatient but i've been really looking forward to it.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Sounds awesome! But maybe consider saturating the map colors a bit to make it a bit more fantastic, as in fantasy. It looks too much like the current game to me. And yes, the orks are too green. And to small. Other than that it looks great.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Oh and what is planned for regional mercenaries if anything?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Well maybe if your in the Shire with an army you could get Hobbit mercenaries? ~D
Maybe you could also add some quotes from the Book.
From Gandalf and co. Like this:
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But it's not for them to
decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.
Gandalf: The board is set, the pieces are moving.
Gandalf: The great battle of our time is about to begin.
Legolas: The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead. And the dead keep it. The way is shut.
Gollum: My precious....

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
awesome job guys, i love total war and lord of the rings and im new here. i wish i could help with the designs and stuff but i have no clue about computers. I could help with stories and stuff but it looks like you guys have already figured out where you are going with this and what you want. so i guess ill just be a bystander and cheer you guys on.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
This mod looks absolutely awsome! Can't wait to play it...
I have a few questions though...
1. Are the heroes in the game? Aragorn, Gandalf, Ugluk, The Witchmaster etc?
2. Will each race have different abilities? Like elves have fighting bonus in winter, orcs prefer night battles etc?
I have more but ill take them later =)
Keep up the good work!
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
No heroes no. The different factions will reflect their particular proficiencies and preferences.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
just here to say that it looks great. You might want to get some ideas from Lord of the Rings Warhammer aswell.
Apart from that doing great ~

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
What's going on with the website? I can't get to it. And more importantly, when is it coming back?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
No, It says you've exceeded your bandwith....... Hope you'll fix it soon :)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
To the ME:TW modders,
It still exceeds your bandwidth, so that will probably last until the end of this month (january), in the mean time your website is unavailable.
Meanwhile, I perhaps have an even more beautiful idea for a map than you already have, but i cant reach the site so i cant compare. To whom may i mail this idea, i have a colourful 256x192 24-bits bitmap? (as you know the campaign map can reach a maximum 256x256 squares).
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
You know, fans are soon desperate enough to make few suicides. Site back online soon?
Considered option on having a website instead of forums?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Dont worry folks, the project is still in full swing. We are having some problems with the forums-which Im sure you've all noticed- and may need to switch hosts as a result, but this isnt a for sure thing yet.
Meanwhile expect to see quite few screenshots released in the next while as we are on the final phase of unit creation (not much more than spit and polish at this point) and when they are complete we will have some glorious battles to tease you with.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
I guess the mod is getting too popular..
Damn it, because now, the dev forum is unavailable and now my work with max and ronin for the mtw version is frozen until the end of january :furious3: Damn you fans ~D ! lol stop watching for every news !
(just kidding, i am just eager to finish the mtw version of the mod as soon as possible)

Can you give us a percentage of how far the development of the MTW version is progressing? 'Cause I look forward to that one for one and a half year or more. ~:)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
"The custom battle mod is almost complete (some adjustement for 3/4 unit with weapon and shield placement are needed and the last major battlemap is almost done too).
For the Campaign version, i would give a 70% (most graphic and music are done, but it still need some graphic for buildings and units + some descriptions).
The team for Rome doesn't use the forum. But for mtw, vital infos was stored there, so i have to wait it is online and then i will take down every link or screenshots hosted by metw.net at the player forum that would use the bandwith as i dont want the same pb when the campaign version will be close from its release.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Thank you.
~:)
And oh do you already have a man to do the descriptions because if you don't I'd be eager to help you.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Hey Encaitar, will your mod incorporate the Mod Switcher for general ease of use?
Just curious. Your mod looks great. I'm definitely going to try it.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Unfortunately the installer for ME:TW-R is unlikely to be compatable with Vercingetorix's mod switcher. It could be made to be, but that would probably involve the install file increasing in size by several hundred megabytes (so that's not going to happen obviously). We should be able to include a program to uninstall METW and restore your previous settings though, which could be used as a kind of mod-switcher.

Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Hey guys... how the hell did you manage to put those things on campaign map? Like Osgiliath, Minas Tirith... are these just edited wonders, or did you actually find a way to do something we at EB are struggling to discover?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Those are actually fully functional cities eadingas. Its simply a matter of creating new meshes and replacing the stock city meshes with the new ones.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
But how did you manage to get custom shapes for every city? Or are these just custom levels per culture, so Minas Tirith has Huge City model, and Osgiliath has Village model?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Certain levels are set to use certain models, and it's set up so that the only huge gondorian city (which uses the Minas Tirith model) will be Minas Tirith. Osgiliath is a wonder.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Damn, and here I thought you have really discovered something new ;)
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Sorry to disappoint you eadingas. The only reason we were able to use that method is because of the relatively static nature of settlements and technology in Middle Earth, ie; We dont have to worry about a smaller Gondorian city upgrading in class and then sharing the same model as Minas Tirith because over the timeframe of our mod cities really never really grow or change.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Okay, one last question: it seems that Minas Tirith model takes up more than one tile on your map... how does that affect unit movement and battles? Do units move through the big model until they reach a tile in the middle?
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Nope, the city model is actually what determines the 'button' or activation area of selecting a city, so as soon as the cursor goes over any part of the mesh it instantly becomes the 'enter settlement' function.
So to answer your question: you cannot park armies around the city so that they are being constantly clipped by the mesh. You can however have armies clip through the mesh if their path cuts across it in such away or if you have armies enter the city they will walk to the center of the mesh, clipping through it before disapearing, but they do that on the stock cities anyway.
Hope that made sense. Essentially what Im saying is that it causes no real problems or graphical anomalies, the only major one being the faction flag which is now hidden in the mesh, so you cant tell at a glance how many troops are in that city.
-
Re: Middle Earth: Total War for Rome
Hey... I recently joined the Guild Forums with the intention to post on the Middle Earth mod because, so far it looks extremely promising. Kudos to everyone on the Middle Earth mod because it's... well, a dream come true for any LOTR Fan.
My only specific question pertaining to the universe of Middle Earth, in the case of your mod, is about the TBA. I was curious to find out when you are intending to release this mod to the community. If you do have a specific date, please let me know...
In other words, I can't wait to play this mod. Keep up the good work, guys, and godspeed to your project. ~
