Iberia: Total War

Hi to everybody,
I am proud to announce the development of a new mod called Iberia: Total War. The web page www.iberiatw.tk is still under construction but the forum is open.
The origin of this mod was the feeling that the spanish faction had been undervalued a bit in the normal game, and also the importance that the conquest of Hispania had for the creation of a truly roman empire.
This mod has two objectives:

1 - The development of a totally new spanish faction for the "normal" game. This will require a total reskin of the current units and/or the design of new units, together with new banners for the faction. Part of the work already done can be seen in the following forum:

2 - The creation of a new campaign focused on the conquest of Hispania.
As I posted in the general forum, this objective required cutting the existing map, enlarging it to a size comparable to the original one and placing new provinces up to a value in the range of 70-80.
Firstly only factions from the Iberian peninsula and "foreign" powers (romans, carthage, greeks) where considered. However, large parts of the map remained empty and it seemed advisable to include some other factions, such as numidian and gauls.
A first project of factions is the following (sorry for the mistakes in English spelling ~:confused: ):

For the moment the 14 factions are placed in a simple map and next operations are:
- Correcting the mistakes in the coasts and some ground_types.
- Including all the missing provinces, settlements and ports.
- Re-design of the factions involved, both in graphical aspect and character.

This project is being developed by a small team, with the help of people from clan celtiberos, mainly in the historical aspects (http://www.celtiberos.com/modules.ph...viewforum&f=21).

that would be cool to set up a spain mod... I was disappointed by the gameplay it offered in RTW, I played spain more often than not in MTW so. I can't help you out because I dont know jack about modding but goodluck with this it looks like a good start.

This post is only to report some progress in the campaign map. After reading some posts in different forums, this seems to be one of the few working maps smaller than the original one.
I have finished the first version of the province distribution in the iberian peninsula. This is the result:

I hope that in a few weeks the first version of the map will be finished. This will be the moment to decide the exact number and name of the factions, the tech development of each faction, the troops present in each province, the behaviour of each faction and the starting relationships (at war or allies).

I will keep you informed of further progress.

I have finished the first version of a fully functional map with 72 regions, divided in 30 in the iberian peninsula, 15 in Italy (including cisalpine gaul), 15 in the rest of Europe, 7 in Africa and 5 in the islands ~:) .

(sorry, it is a forum in Spanish, but the map and the names of the regions must be easily understandable).
Even, if you are registered in the celtiberos webpage, you can download this version and play the provincial campaign at the current state of development. The advantage is that this campaign does not modify the normal game and can be easily removed.

Next step will be the economical aspects of the map (resources and agriculture), together with some polishing of geographical (rivers, coasts, mountains) and political (regions limits, settlements placement) aspects.
The question of factions will come later.

Tío, no lo pillo. ¿Están los vascones y no los cántabros que lucharon doce años contra Augusto?. Por si no lo sabes, esa rebelión se llama aún las "Guerras Cántabras".

Me parece una omisión imperdonable.

Sí, ya sé que están entre los celtas, pero a pesar de las influencias célticas, cántabros y astures -al contrario que galaicos y norlusitanos, no fueron colonias celtas. Están mucho más relacionados con los vascones, un pueblo aliado de los cántabros, a los que has dado una facción aparte.

En realidad, para hacerlo con rigor debería haber una facción -cántabros- que agrupara a cántabros, astures, vascones y várdulos. Los celtas, aunque influyeron poderosamente en estos pueblos, sólo ocuparon efectivamente el noroeste peninsular.

Just for people who don't understand Spanish, I summarize the last two posts saying that the opinion of Dux Corvanus is that Vascones shouldn't be a faction in the game, but Cantabrians would be a better option (all this said in a not very polite manner, in my opinion).

However you must think also in the historical period. The game starts around the beginning of the first punic war. You are speaking of facts near 300 years later, during the Augustus regime.

Personal remark: think about how would you feel if your three-month work were qualified as "imperdonable" (unpardonable = no mercy). I am very proud of my work, mainly in the technical aspect, given that, in my knowledge, this is the first fully functional partial map described in the RTW modding forums. I has seen modifications of the original map and expansions, but not enlargements of a small part, and I can say that it was not easy.

I just went nuts when I saw that an important factor in ancient peninsular history was simply dispatched as a minor part of a tangent -but not proper- culture, while other - very closely related- one that rarely was even mentioned till rare excerpts of visigothic and frank sources was set apart from its near relatives and distinguished with its own faction, and I mistook it for some kind of nationalistic bias.

If I was wrong, again, sorry. I've never doubt of your talent, tho. Only of your sources. They were -and still are- unpardonable. Read my post again, I never said anything about your work. It has nothing to do in this. I admire it.

Anyway, you must know: vascones were first mentioned even later, by Titus Livius in times of Titus Vespasian, and it's just a mention, no more, the same as Strabo. Cantabrii, on the contrary, played a significant role in the conquest of the peninsula, and were reportedly used as mercenary by Pompey.

Just my self-justification and my apologize.

In fact the campaign map is almost finished. I have stablished the city level and population for all the settlements. I have put the agents for all the factions. The colors have been changed.
Now I am trying to modify the models used for generals and captains and preparing new buttons and banners. (I have a fight with the symbols in the campaign map banners, but nobody seems to know how to solve ~:confused: ).
Even I have included new names for the iberian factions.
Finally I want to change a little the ground types, giving more opportunities for ambushes.

On the other hand, Viriato keeps on doing more units and reskins and I hope that we will start soon with the inclusion of those new units in the map.

Finally I solved the problem with strat banners (lack of experience with alpha channel :embarassed: ). I have selected some celtic and iberian symbols for the factions and I have prepared banners and buttons. Here you have some examples:

Finally I have adapted the ZoR system of RTR (with permission of the authors, of course) for recruitment. The factions are divided into six cultures: celts, iberians, africans, hellenic, romans and gauls.
As a hobby ~D I have been reskinning some units for numidians and italic tribes. For example a numidian heavy cavalry (adapted from pontic one) and italic peltasts (from greek ones).

I noticed in one of your earlier screenshots there was a city called "arse". Even though this my be historicelly accurate, perhaps it might be prudent to change its name to ars or arx or something similar, as in English "arse" is a rather rude word. I don't mean to insult your english language skills or anything but mistakes like this have been made in the past (an italian car was called "fart" for instance, and a british company attempted to sell deoderant named "mist" in Germany - "mist" means "dung" in german!). Just to let you know.

I will have to check this kind of problems in the English translation.
(I can tell you that the car Mitsubishi Pajero was called different in Spain. I cannot translate "pajero" in English, but it is not a very polite word ~;) )

The campaign map is very well adapted, what I mean is, when you scaled it up, you have made it look really good, I have great difficulty getting the mountains to look like that...

Well, in fact I didn't modify the mountains from the original files. It is only the result of resizing. We must recognize then that CA did well the work. ~;)

Did you try to do the mountains from a flat map? Perhaps this is the problem.

It's difficult to say. My hope is to have a 1.0 version by summer, after some beta tests (the first beta version could be prepared in a couple of weeks). But it is only a hope.

Just some information about the last steps in the development.

- The roman faction is now represente by the Julii. I have followed the indications of bouis here: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showp...67&postcount=4
Now the senate is represented by a single general's unit (faction leader) and the faction disappears at the beginning of the campaign.
I hope in this way the roman faction will be more expansionist.

- The new objective of the campaign is the conquest of Numantia, together with the possesion of 50 regions.

- I have adapted the ZoR system from RTR (thanks to the developers by the permission for doing it). The map is divided into 6 culture zones, with the corresponding hidden resources: roman (romans and italics, central Italy), greek (greek cities, Sicily and south Italy), african (numidian and carthage, north Africa), gallic (gauls and padani, north Italy and most Europe), celtic (celts, lusitanians and celtiberians, central and west Iberian peninsula) and iberian (ilergeti, edetani and turdetani, south and east Iberian peninsula).

- The unused factions are now empty and they cannot be played in custom battles (it had no sense).

- General modifications in units: peasants and incendiary pigs have been eliminated. Warhounds remain only accessible to gauls and padani.

- The highest level of buildings is accessible only to romans, carthaginians and greeks.

- Romans: some new textures. Roman archers eliminated (romans will have archers only after Marius reform). Added slingers in pre-Marius period.
- Carthage: totally reskinned. City militia eliminated. The new militia is Caetratii (swordmen), similar to Iberian infantry. Carthaginian archers have been included.
- Numidia: two new units, hillmen as light melee infantry and heavy cavalry, adapted from pontic one. Numidian javelinmen are now recruited in practice field.
- Greeks: added a heavy cavalry unit (similar to macedonian cav). New missile unit: gastraphetes, a precursor of the crossbow.
- Italics: almost finished. Units: militia (spearmen), samnite infantry (similar to hastati, without pilum), apulian pikemen, legionaries (from Picenum?), peltasts, heavy peltasts, slingers, archers, onagres, light cavalry, auxilia samnite cavalry (javelin) and heavy (apulian) cavalry.

We are now working in finishing edetani, turdetani and celtiberian factions. We have most of the infantry units and some of the missile (including the new flaming javelins) and cavalry units.

I'll try to put here some new screenshots asap.

However, there is still a lot of work to do:
- Almost full design of ilergeti, celts and lusitanian factions.
- Design of the auxillia units recruitable in the zones of different culture.
- Re-design of mercenaries.
- Final balance of the units and factions.

In any case, we are advancing.

Yes, at the beginning of the campaign there are two, but the senate disappears immediately. We chose Julii as we had the idea that the red color fits better with the romans. But they have been renamed as "the romans", without any reference to the Julii (except in the names of the family tree, but for the moment I won't change them).
The blue color of the scipii has been assigned to the italic faction.
The mod is quickly advancing those days and we will probably have a beta version (in Spanish for the moment) by the end of March.

Do you mean in battles or in campaign? It is easy for battles, but I don't know how to "expand" the choice of mercenaries in campaign for one given faction. ~:confused:
Another possibility would be to give more choices of recruitment to Carthage in some "foreign" territories, such as the Iberian peninsula.

Hey I love the loading screen... Where does it come from?

I was refferring to mercinaries avaiable around Carthage and just having more choices of mercinaries in genera, such as swordsmen and stuff like thatl. Is this mod going to have climate control as well? I notcied RTR seemed to actually have a varity of different weather which seemed cool.

Well, my idea was to allow the recruitment of low quality troops (auxillia) in other culture lands but mercernaries will be strong troops, in large variety. As an example, I have eliminated gladiators from the recruitment system, with the idea of introducing them as mercenaries in Rome and neighbour regions.
For the moment we have any idea about changing weather.

I don't know where that picture (and the other loading screens) comes from. It was Viriato who looked for the pictures.

Hi to everybody,
this post is only to report some good news and (of course) bad news.

Good news:

- The development team is currently testing a beta for internal use (in Spanish as you can imagine). It is a self-installation file combined with the ModSwitcher tool developed by Vercingetorix. With only half-a-dozen clicks the mod is installed and with only two is completely uninstalled leaving a clean RTW installation. ~:cool:

- The first MP battle has been fought between two of the new factions of the mod: edetani and turdetani. The players have said the battle was equilibrated and with a skirmishing style, in agreement with the warfare of the prerroman period in the Iberian peninsula. :duel:

Bad news: :embarassed:

- This mod has a CTD problem in the battle mode, that seems to be linked to the celtiberian general's bodyguard unit. When this unit is present, the battle suddenly crashes. Even playing with -show_err the game doesn't give any error message. :furious3:

- We have also a CTD problem in the campaign mode after some turns (3-5). Although still without confirmation, it seems to me that the problem is linked to the rebel (slave) faction. Again the game doesn't give any error message. :furious3:

Has anybody an idea about the possible origin for these two CTD problems?
Any help would be greatly acknowledged.

The loading images and the chosen splash are great!
I'm not sure, but i think the splash image is a painting and represent the assassination (paid by the romans) of Viriato while he was sleeping.

Does the batlle CTD only when the Celtiberian bodyguards unit engages another? If so it could be a problem with the secondary weapon swithching.

The CTD in campaign are much more tricky and I don't have enough information. I do remember a similiar problem with the RTR mod and it was related to slave faction leaders.

I'm sorry for not being able to add much more. Hope you can get this mod off the ground because it will be definitly one of the best around.

You were right about the battle CTD. It was definitely the secondary weapon with an animation that didn't support it and it is fixed now.

In the case of campaign CTD, after fixing that problem I was able to play 10 turns, and I will check the rebel armies.

I hope the full beta version could be finished by summer. ~D

Features:
- Easy and clean install/uninstall system. A .exe file installs the additional files and modswitcher (by Vercingetorix). This program allows to install the files that substitute the original ones but keeping a backup copy. The inverse steps allows to leave a clean original installation.
- Only 13 factions playable: romans, italics, greeks, carthaginians, numidians, gauls, padani gauls, turdetani, edetani, ilergeti (not yet done), celtiberians, lusitanians (not finished) and celts (not finished)
- Almost complete reskin of carthage and romans julii factions. Romans have less units and less powerful cavalry.
- A few units added to greek cities and numidia.
- Three new complete factions and some new units for celts and lusitanians.
- A new campaign map (provincial campaign) of the western Mediterranean, with a (not still finished) ZoR system (thanks to RTR team).

In the next version:
- All the 13 factions finished.
- ZoR system with sets of recruitable auxillia.
- Historical battles: Vulcanalia, Kesse, Kastilo, Numantia...
- English version (and probably also other languages, as Portuguese)

If somebody wants to install the mod but doesn't understand Spanish, I can translate the instructions to English.

Which one did you try? The rar file must be unzipped with winrar.
Then CoH_betav0.1.exe is an intaller program. Double click with the mouse and it will open. When this installation is finished, then click on ModSwitcher.exe (step 3).

I've been improving the campaign.
For example the possibility of recruiting local auxillia. The conqueror of a region of different culture, where there was a military building, will be able to recruit local auxillia. These will be weak (and cheap) troops, suitable for garrison or as complement of the conqueror's army. I have used the textures of slave faction and also some of the warspite's (thanks a lot :bow: )textures for mercenaries. This is the example of african auxillia, skirmishers and cavalry.

You can see, in the screenshots, all the possible cavalry and missile auxillia available for the lusitanian faction. They include greek and gaul archers, african and italian skirmishers, iberian slingers, greek and african skirmisher cavalry, iberian caetrati cavalry and light gaul and italian cavalry.

At the present, we are in a transition moment, as the mod team is growing and probably some drastic (and positive, of course) changes will be introduced.
Some more iberian factions (up to a total number of 13) will be included for MP and custom battles. Many of the units will be redesign for a better historical accuracy, under the supervision of our new historical researcher, CeltiberoIdibil.
The foreign factions will be probably redesign. Legionario is modelling and skinning new italian and gaul units.
Now there are at least 6-8 historical battles, designed by CeltiberoKarmipoka and macchi. Most of them are battles fought in the Iberian peninsula in the context of the punic wars or the roman conquest of Hispania. These are some screenshots of those historical battles: Baikor, Numantia (2 screens), Vulcanalia, Kesse, and Kastilo.

In the last days the Iberia TW mod is suffering an interesting (r)evolution.
It has been considered as Major Community Project in twcenter and you can follow the discussion here:

In any case I will post here the major goals in the development.
All the units will be re-designed in order to make them more historically accurate. Fortunately there are some other skinners working with us.
