EB news - Friday, April 1
Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans!
We have some exciting things to show you this week! Work continues on making EB into something worthy of distribution, and we are still hopeful that we might be able to release the open beta this month. Don't hold us to that, however!
This week we have some rather sad news, for some of our members. Thrace will no longer exist as a faction. The Thracian units will be available to Dacia, as well as Thracian religious structures, and Dacia will be the Thracian tribe that we depict. So, until the inevitable expansion arrives, we bid a fond adieu to another of Parmenio's faction icons:
http://img210.exs.cx/img210/4556/thrace1rp7iw.jpg
We are proud to present Illyria as its replacement! Here you see the first Illyrian units, the Illyrian Thureophoroi by Spartan Warrior and the Taxeis Phalangitai by Panda Centurion.

http://img228.exs.cx/img228/7585/tax...epi24pt7sx.jpg
We would also like to present some of our new, unique buildings. These (works in progress) were put together by Teleklos Archelaou based on his own research and the research of many others.

http://img228.exs.cx/img228/4539/the...een11qd2ly.jpg
Finally, we have put together a very important unit for you. As you may or may not know, there has been much discussion about the inclusion of nude units in our mod. After much discussion, debate, and the presentation of evidence, we have been convinced that yes, indeed, certain Greeks fought in the nude. With armor, of course.
With great pride and gaiety, we present a unit that should need no introduction, the fabulous Theban Sacred Band. Credit for these (works in progress - please don't criticise yet) must go to GodsPetMonkey. Please note he has provided both shaved and natural versions.

Please note that unless stated otherwise, ALL pictures shown in our news posts are of works in progress. We continue to improve on all parts of EB, and will do so long after our initial release.
As always, if you have questions or comments, the best place to post them would be here:

Or here:

We give special thanks to http://www.imageshack.us who provide us with a simple, foolproof, and free way to show you all these pictures each week.
Have a wonderful day!
Sincerely,
-the EB team

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
You've got to be kidding me with those Theban units. Yes they were homosexuals, but they weren't queens. Jesus they were some of the toughest soldiers ever to grace this green green earth.
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
It's a historical fact that the Thebans wore hot-pink emblazoned armour into battle, imagine not knowing that. :dizzy2:

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
haha, those thebands are great! :laugh2: (btw BP, please don't post those in the babe thread...)
personally, i'm glad you ditched the thracians, i thought it was a wasting a slot to have both thracians and dacians in there. although i was hoping for something a little more exotic than illyria. oh well, can't break an egg without making an omlette.. or something.
also, how much thought has been given to making the senate and it's 3 factions represent greece instead of rome?
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Great work, again. However, one question about the Taxeis Phalangitai. Their names suggests they are macedonian-style phalanx inf. And their small shields reinforce this opinion, but their spears are one-handed.So I'd be grateful for some more detalis regarding this issue.
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Do you have a different Theban model for when they fight in the ice of Scandinavia? You know, with smaller... 'attributes' ~D
Sorry, couldn´t resist. Didn´t they wear leggings?
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
wich one is the thureophoroi, I thoguht they were heavy-peltast...
well, nice theban sacred band, but wasn't it destroyed at chaeronae? btw, if you hate the penis, keep em in phalanx. wo can recruit them? only greeks? or everybody owning theban province? merc? how?
the idea of romans switchign with greeks sounds nice. but would be bugged,on a fresh install you can only campaign with the romans, now greeks. etc. but still sounds nice. but hen you will have julli, bruttii and scippii beiing Sparta, Athens, and corinth ( or something) but wich will be the ehad of those three? wich will be the senate? and another thing. they weren't always allied. the greeks killed mostly one kin dof people: greeks. they would have conquered the world, as soon as they stopped killign each other...
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Well, nice job, but of course it needs correcting, even if it is a work in progress. It needs some greaves!
~Wiz
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
If the romans or others has to fight the Elite Theban Sacred Band a shield, a helmet and chainmail are not enough protection...
They need this advanced protection device..........

Very funny!!!
While on the topic, could you please post a unit of Israeli pimps with Abraham as officer?
Offering their sisters=wifes to local kings for money? you can make them as a separate unit with Sarah as officer...
But wait these were Jews so you would be called Atisemit, Nazi, and punished...You can insult anyone but not them...

On the topic of homosexuality I would expect you as a historical authenticity supporters to show more respect and not fall into falsified assumptions that the ancient Hellenes practiced homosexuality in a regular way of life...
As for evidence:

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Helenes, I agree with you to a certain extent. I beleave that the Sacred Band of Thebes was homosexual to a certain degree. They wouldn't go as far anal, but they would defintely masturbate eachother. But that's nothing special, you could do taht and there would be nothing good coming out of it. It was the love that existed between them that is astonishing. If men still had that type of mentality wars would go on forever.

As for love, well, that's right, but romances tend to be short in the middle of a war, so you better can stand your lover's death.

He obviously is not getting enough of the real thing, because, to be honest, I find C++ a poor substitute for sex.

Ahhahahahaha, yeah totally, give them black leather armor with lots of random chains and zippers. Oh, and they can each have their partner crawling behind them on a leash. And when they win a battle their victory music can be "Y.M.C.A." and they can all start doing the dance! Bwahahahahahaha!!!

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Hi. Another long time lurker (well, 02. January actually) has been coaxed out of hiding by your great modding effort (well, Blue Lotus helped, too). Keep up the great work, and definately keep your sense of humor!
I'm sad to see the thracians getting the axe (pun intended). The illyrians are a worthy successor of course. However, I think I recall that you wanted to add another eastern faction in case you decide to eliminate another "western" faction. This no longer seems to be the case. Any special reasons why?
Not that I dislike the Illyriansor thracians (if it were up to me we'ld have no faction limit, and about three dozen european factions), but I'm still a bit worried about the eastern expanses.... . I know your not ballancing any factions - again a decision I can happily live with, as it adds another kind of difficulty level (beside a lot of immersion)- but I'm basically worried that playing bactia (sp?) could be a bit ... boring.
I really like the unique buildings. I guess, since they're unique (duh), they cannot be upgraded. However, what kind of building limitations have you decided on implementing? Historically, they should already be present. But what if they're destroyed? Can they be rebuilt? Do the cities have to be deveoloped to a certain level (population?)?
Anyway, thanks for your time and effort. Keep up the good work.
-
Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Factions are chosen based on different factors, including historical impact, aggressiveness, nation-building, and so on. We don't "fill holes," though of course some factions that had less of an impact are more difficult to get rid of than others. In many cases this sort of debate is highly subjective, so there are many good choices.
I should note that the whole Illyria thing was also an April fool's joke. The units you see will exist, but not as a part of an Illyrian faction. We do have many regional units available; you have seen some Scythian ones in the past, as well as many others.

Why boring? The Seleucid Empire and Parthia are right there for the taking and you will have some of the most unique units, what more do you want? ~:)

Some may already be there, others might be built and bare in mind that it is possible to make buildings undestructable. Remember roads and farms.

I worry that it "could" be boring only for bactria, because it appears that they will face a limited number of factions up to the latter part of the game. I don't know, of course, how the play test resulted. If parthia or the seleucids expand towards the east, or prefer bickering with their more imediate neighbours. Anyway, my post might have sounded more negativ then I have intended.
I'm very exited about this mod and its stunning level of detail.

You're right. I had forgotten that. Perhaps because I'm always eager to wipe out my oponents religious buildings.
I also wanted to ask you something, sarcasm. From your "work" here on the forum, one could surmise that your task in EB could be documentation..., if so, and with the permission of your fellow EB members could you give us a hint as to how the documentation will be presented (word document, pdf dokument)?
And thank you for your welcome.

Most of my posts here on the OPEN forum were made before I became an EB member and have no direct relation to my work.
Anyways my job at EB is Building Coordinator (which is a lot more work than I thought), among other things. I also try to help here and there when I can, for example, seeing this week´s bulletin, I also made some (6 I think) of the Unique building´s descriptions, and plan to do some more. And hopefully, some of the code and concept regarding the buildings, will be made by me, for the Beta release. ~;)
There is currently no plans to include a manual that I know of (if that´s what you mean by documentation), though I have already thought of it and planned to submit the idea. If it is indeed released, I plan to make some of the work, obviously.

Byzantine Prince will be heartbroken if you don't include this rainbow hotdog unit.
Aside from that, the buildings look great. Have you got them set up in the battle map as well?
I can't wait. You and this game have inspired me. I have found new passion for this era, having read Kagan's "The Peloponesian War" in short time. "The Making of the Roman Army: From republic to empire" (Keppie) and "The Celtic Realms: The history and culture of the celtic peoples from prehistory to the norman invasion" (Dillon & Chadwick) are both next in line.
I can't get enough.
Thanks team. I look forward to my studies brought to life in your work.

I'll say no more. I don't want this thread to spiral into the gutter.

Are you saying you something wrong in BP if BP was indeed gay? And that's a big if. Here's a balloon :balloon2: as promised.

Trust me, the east has it's supporters among us as well. ~;)
No way will the east be be boring. Between the Sarmatians, many rebels, the Selecuids, Parthians and Bactrians, it will be quite interesting.

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Of course, it would be a blast if we had a later start date with the Seleukids just having crumbled in the east, out of the picture, to have Baktria, a few various Indian groups, Parthia, Sakae, Yueh-Zi, Sarmatians, and maybe some other groups being able to fight with each other over here, but unfortunately the time and the game faction limits will take that away. I would fully expect to see stiff competition from at least four factions over a lot of the east. It will be great to see who comes out on top in the playtesting. Baktria moved around historically, it would be awesome to see something like that happen on its own - though I can't expect it to.

Sacred Band
Hello all.
I am new to this forum and entered here from a reference.
I must admit i hate :furious3: the color of the skin choosen for The Sacred Band. "PINK" how come? Pink didn`t existed in that time and wasn`t in any way associated with homosexuality. The shield has the colors of the rainbow. It is just like a freaking gay parade (esxuse me but :furious3: ....).
PLZ change the color. It is a shame to dishonor all those brave soldiers of the past.
About homosexuality in ancient Greece.
It is a very misunderstood subject. If you made all that research about your new skin then you should research :book: also about historic facts of the time.

Re: EB news - Friday, April 1
Uhm... guy. It was a joke. April fool's day. Welcome to the Org, but read the rest of the thread before you post. There are not going to be any pink warriors with rainbow shields running around with penii exposed.
Feel better?
