Promotion to Senior membership depends on what contributions you have made to the community that the Org is, and how they have bettered this community. This can be game guides, mods, but also simply the creating of a polite, respectful and calm atmosphere to debate in.
Asking for Senior membership is not the way to get it.

You could always try upping your post count. That might work.
Nah I tried that it doesnt work. Unless you need more than 10000 posts. But then Jag has that and hes still not a senior member. Its all about making good contributions to the community. I guess Ill just have to keep plugging away best as can . ~DQuote:

Yes - trust me post count and years spent here count for nothing and asking for Snr Membership probably makes the liklyhood even less.
Snr membership is rare and is normally on what people contribute to the community.
Don't worry Jag you are our Senior Spammer. ~
Thank you mr moderator! ~D
YAh post count definatly doenst count. Hoggy is one of the only senior members i have ever seen and he has the same amount of post as me.
I think becoming a senior member should be a little easier.

if it was easier, there'd be a lot more around. If there was a lot more around, the title would lose its meaning.Quote:

Why thank you. ~D But its up to the mods to determine senior members. Hell you could make 20000 worthless posts and not make it or one real good mod and be made one. Also all my 9000 posts werent all gems ~:)Quote:

Anyway, Senior member is just an honorific title given to those who contribute and make the community a better place. be it through mods/leadership/events/organization or something along those lines. Aside from the cool little title and a slightly larger PM box there's not much you get. Oh, you get free beer at Kukri's house, but then again...you must find him first ~:) ~
as those big red letters in your avatar attest ~;) ~DQuote:

Ahh, youre somewhat new here.
When the .org becomes a full fledged part of your life, like food or shelter, then you will care about little things like this. ~;)

Glad this discussion took place. I was very curious.
It is a shame there aren't other titles. Peasant, knight, duke, count, etc. Oh wait. I know why. Because that would be retarded.
Good discussion though. Very interesting.
See, you folks should all come over to TWC. Any good poster with 100+ posts gets to be a Civitates. ~;)

Actually, Junior Members can view the Backroom. We can't make any posts but we can look at everything. I looked at a lot of the stuff. Am I cursed now?Quote:

Yes a thousand posts or so got you to Kensai level...
Do you see that, guys? This senior member here is trying to shut my mouth about them by hypnotisation! We must take action soon! What are they hiding?Quote:

There seems to be more moderators and assistant moderators than senior members, I would have thought that it would be the other way round. Has admin ever thought of culling a few mods and ast. mods?
well a lot of senior members are moderators etc. IIRC Beirut was a senior member before he became a assistant moderator.Quote:

Yes he was. IMHO the fewer senior members there are the more significance it holds.
Many senior members don't visit the board very often though and that is partly why there are so few, the other reason is they are generally the ones promoted to assistant moderator and moderator.
Hey Im 57 Ive got to be a senior member I even have a Senior citizens card from AARP ~D
Hehe, you would think that that would count for something right?Quote:

I'm a Senior Member and when I got the title initially from the moderators it was kinda like a "Thank you" for my modding work and helping out others, the HoF and Edit awards were given for the same reasons (I think). As a moderator I promoted hoggy to Senior Membership for the very same reasons.
The only advantage of Senior Membership is having a bigger PM allowance. There is no increase in status involved since they were already respected by others before being made Senior Member.
really ? I always thought that was what it 's all about ~;)Quote:

There certainly is or this thread wouldnt exist. The increase in status is in the eyes of the others who post here. I know speaking for myself when I see senior member under someones name their a rational and respectful member of the community of the highest standing . Its just a status that cant be measured in any material way other than your bigger PM box ~;)Quote:

Being a Senior Member improves your status. You get more respect ~D
And also, being a Senior Member with 2 or 3 Awards is better than being even the Forum Administrator....
The forum administrators are the Gods of a forum, no mere mortal, no matter how many awards he or she has, can compare to that :bow:Quote:

To those who are aware of at least some of the reasons the Senior Member has been given that status there will be no rise in status because that person will already be held in high respect.
For someone who hasn't seen the reasons, it is an indicator that they probably should give the Senior Member some respect.
The reason for limiting things is because the board was shut-off completely in the past as it got too big. Server hardware is better now, the board is better, but the forums are also much bigger than it ever was, more options and more used. In order to keep things rolling, certain options are disabled or limits put in place (the native search function is pretty server intensive, so guests can only use Google and there's a 90 seonds wait for members).Quote:

It might be fun to have small icons under the locations for the winners, i.e. best spammer for the year gets a can of spam (until next years awards). Hmmm, OTOH that might encourage spamming.
Yes, and encouraging spam is not, I beleive, the goal. Maybe you could call the award, "most despicable spammer of the year," and include with it a higher flood control count (more seconds of waiting), to make the award somewhat of a "dubious honor."Quote:

Simple answer is that unused PM space does not affect performance. The problem obviously comes when it is used. The size of a database inherently affects forum performance, usually in a non-linear way. FYI, the other base factor in terms of server load is the number of users online at any given time - from what I've seen, this can reach 300+ with the Org (with a 15 minute timeout). Even with some fairly serious hardware, vBulletin boards can get bogged down once they have 7 figure post totals, and can require some involved database management and forum tweaks to keep them running smoothly. Some of the larger boards out there use more than one server to handle the load. The Org has 630,000 posts right now, and that's with some serious pruning over the years, most recently of the Backroom.Quote:

That's a potential 200,000 "posts" stored as PMs, adding nothing to the visible content of the forums, but seriously padding the size of the database, therefore adding to possible complications to the running of the forums. For most members there is really very little reason for them to have a large number of PMs, especially as older PMs can very easily be downloaded for local storage.
Is TosaInu perhaps a little conservative in setting limits? Yes, I guess he is. But I'd much rather that than a gung-ho admin who promises more than the Org's server can deliver, and then is forced to pare back things when the forums start going awry.
The Org has the board search enabled for all forums except the Backroom, which is over 90% of the board in terms of posts. On the PM thing, members at TWC get 25 PMs in their box, as compared to 20 here, so it's not so much of a difference methinks.Quote:

OTOH Telefragged, the Org's host, seems not to be so directly involved, beyond setting some basic terms and conditions of service and managing the server. I guess this may well be due to the different circumstances of each board: TWC seems to be, in some respects, run by Ogre's Net, whereas the Org has a greater degree of independence from Telefragged, and is run by TosaInu and barocca. Which setup is better is a matter of opinion, I guess, as both have advantages and disadvantages.
Thought so. No problems with a limited PM box, just inquiring (and fooling around ~;)).Quote:

Possibly Ogre's Net decided 100 PMs for basic users was too much of a performance hog. I'll ask Sulla—I know there was confusion with PMs during the move to vB (Urbanis Legio getting more PMs than Quaestors).Quote:

Ah, but the .org still doesn't have attachments, and we now have limited attachments, and a few staff members are pushing for more and better attachments. You just wait, we'll beat you in the end! ~DQuote:

I still haven't figured out why I got made a senior member...I just hung around in the tavern, cracked jokes and posted in the OWS.
Speaking of PM boxes, is it weird that mine kept on getting bigger? It used to be 8, now I think its at 20 or something...
My PM box is also "limited" to 20, I guess it's a membership privilage expanded.
It used to be one. Now that was annoying.
