Bye bye general. Said phalanx unit (German spear warband at 2/3 strength) charged some equites in the rear using phalanx formation. I killed around 2-3 when said equites turned around, charged, totally disrupted the phalanx formation and routed my phalanx unit. I won that battle due to having other troops left but I was extremely pissed.
Also, I think it's ridiculous for phalanx units to have their formation disrupted easily by frontal charges. It happens too often with cavalry and sometimes with infantry. My phalanx units are always 6-8 lines deep.
They also have a tendency to either have parts of the phalanx not attack units in front and in range or to have parts of the phalanx go too forward and start using their knives while attacking forward.
