Why this policies on flaming and swearing?

I'm not sure if i should discuss this, but seeing the policies of others forums, i'm wondering if the mods are not conservative... Why can't we say **************************************************************************************************** *************************************************** just to the air? I'm sure that it will take no offense. While i not agree with no flaming and swearing towards other patrons, i'm not discussing this here, just the inpersonal insult. Though this may seem like a discussion to the watchtower, i'll also like to know your opinions on this subject in general in all society, that's why i posted it here.

Why do you ahve to be vulgar when normal words will do just as fine?

Anyways this has been adresssed on the sticky at the top. What else is there to explain?

Because it is petty, juvenile and not conducive to good discussions. You will notice that on other boards, discussion between radical opposites is nearly impossible. Wading through threads full of abusive language is no fun either. You think it is? Go elsewhere.

One can be mature when swearing- but in an unrestricted environment such as the internet, maturity is very lacking. Flaming, I agree fully with the policy- it is always juvenile.

Swearing; is a weak mind's attempt to express itself forcibly...

The reason we don't allow swearing here is because this isn't n00b central. If you want to express your opinions with swear words, then go play Runescape.

Why no swearing or flaming? Because I (or anyone else here, for that matter) don't want to have to scroll through endless pages of insults and offensive language.

Anyway, what could swearing achieve that you can't do with normal words? It hardly takes any effort.

I'll just second this as my two cents on this subject.

It would be different if people could be relied upon to swear creatively ...

Vulgarity is a sign of poor vocabulary and a lack of maturity. We all are tempted from time to time, but vulgarity used frequently is a waste of time and boring as well.

When someone swears at you the first reaction is to respond in kind and I have gone through forums where there are post after post of this silliness.

Bear in mind that most people when they post, are not in a screaming frenzy of outrage. They choose to use vulgarity as an alternative to actually thinking and that in and of itself is enough IMO (In My Opinion) to justify the policy. If your entire range of expression consists of using vulgarity then how exactly do you express degrees of upset at someone? Its lazy and boring.

We have a no swearing policy because it's about as conducive to good discussion as a frontal lobotomy. Aside from that we are also a PG-13 board,which is the rationale behind several of our other policies; the ladies in the Babe thread are substantially less naked than they could be for example.

As for why patrons aren't allowed to flame each other-this is a discussion board, not CS. If you really want to give someone a piece of your mind, talk to them on ICQ, rather than harrassing people who wish to post constructively.

Ad Hominem arguments are fallacies.

I agree with the policy of no swearing, etc.

Swearing should be reserved for the "vocal" outburst when angry at someone you are looking at, and then it is still not right.

Once you are actually typing, it loses it's impact and better reasoned words should be used.

They did. Flaming is never okay, and swearing cannot be allowed, because there are too many immature people on the web.

Why Swear when you can do this:

I have never really understood why treating us like children not adults serves any purpose, other than to patronise us, personally. It is no secret that we all swear from time to time, as long as it is not constant and grossly out of proportion I see no problem. The fact a few teenagers who live in a whole and have no clue about offensive material, search this site, doesn't mean swearing should not be allowed.

It also does add a lot to conversations at the .org and any place.

How so?

I'll never buy this, having been raised by a Marine who majored in english at Yale. Some of the most beautiful swearing I've heard has come from some of the most articulate people I know.

Anyway, I don't pay a dime for the privilege to post here so whatever policy the owners see fit is fine with me.

There is a time and place for everything.

And yes I can swear like a miner in the right circumstances. But I avoid swearing in front of children, grandparents, ministers of religon etc.

As I've mentioned to several posters in the Frontroom, there are about a billion sites that let you express the most insane and vulgar comments. If you feel the need to say **** ***, then go to any one of them and party on.

This site is for the people who do not swear. (Or at least try not to.) If there are limitless sites that allow swearing, why can't there be one that doesn't?

This is not about the place it's about freedom, but I understood the point from the beggining. The problem is not in extent to the internet, that's mostly an unregulated space, i'm refering to society in itself, why is swearing wrong? Why is it considered childish? Do everyone thinks that they are best because they talk with finesse? Is really the best way to express yourself with fine words, when in fact the swearing gets to everybody, from the most educated people to the more ignorant, from one gringo to a chinese. Again i ask this outside the forum subject. The ultimate question will be: Do you let your morality (if any) get on the way you relate to people or do you let for the same porpouse enter the finesse of your vocabulary? Do you think that swearing most be censured or that it should be allowed in any given place?

Well in fact many of the sites that i've seen keep the same policies. I only encountered that kind of freedom in latin american forums.

If swearing didn't offend it wouldn't be swearing now would it?

Well you've a point there, but maybe it's a problem of translation. Does the english language use that word to simbolize the insult towards another person or could it be used to the air or to a third person that is not in the scenario? Even so I don't believe in sentimentalism. Even penal (criminal) cases in my country tend to beging from swearing, i think that the same happens in all western culture, so this restricts freedom a lot. Let's have in mind that many of this criminal cases end on conviction, wich might be prison. But beyond that does limiting the use of vulgar vocabulary acomplishes anything at all? I think that only the physical or patrimonial damage should be the only one protected by society.

No I disagree as a lot of fights start with words and escalate out of control with a heated exchange.

The only reason for swearing is to deride, insult or embarrass another individual in a confrontational scenario.

Swearing when say someone hits a finger with a hammer or a football to the groin is understandable...and it is often used in situations involving sweat... labour, sports and sex.

The Spanish language in general has a very relaxed attitude towards swearing and it only becomes serious when directed at other people. In my opinion, this approach is much less hypocritical.

In English (and possibly other north-european languages, who knows) the attitude seems to be sure, swear as much as you want, as bad as you want, at whoever you want, whenever you want, just not in public, because that would be, um, somehow, wrong.

In English people will tense up and start tuttering at the mere mention of certain words. In Spanish, as long as you don't tell anyone to go bugger their mother, you're cool. It seems to me that these people have their priorities straight ~D

Call it morality or simply conventional wisdom. I swear like ten sailors at work. Doesn't bother me or the guys. I do not swear in front of the clients, nor do I say "would you like some ******* cereal for breakfast?" to my kids. It's simply inappropriate. Why? Because conventional wisdom says that swearing in front of little kids is wrong. Along with farting in crowded elevators and burping at funerals. Doesn't hurt anyone, just bad manners.

What if you stare accusingly at the person next to you?

A particular problem with swearing on the internet is the absence of body language, tone of voice etc all the stuff you rely on in face to face contact to understand communication. We just see the cold hard text[1]. It's hard enough to avoid over-reacting when faced with a strong view expressed without swearing; if it were laced with expletives, it would be almost impossible.

Well lack of regulation, when it's rationally applicable, like in an space for discussion, wheter it's a forum in the internet or your house, makes it more free. This terms of rationallity are applied all along the law, like for example your first emendment or my article 17 of the Constitution.
