If I lived then, then I would worship gods of war and prosperity.

Re: what god would you pray to?
Ahuramazda, the ancient God of Iran.
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
As soon as I find out enough about them, the Hiberno-celtic gods. Until then, I will stick with the Norse- Odin Allfather and such.
Edit: I thought you said who do you pray to. Well, I would pray to/ show reverence to the Celtic gods.

Re: what god would you pray to?
Invented? Hmm...
...are you saying that all gods are invented including the Monotheists' god?
By the way this 'vengeance and revenge' is not terribly accurate , despite being re produces allover the internet/tv/games industry.
Nemesis in ancient greek mythology is the divine or not action that follows 'hybris' . Hybris is an act of arrogance, of self pride above someone's virtues, an act that insults the 'fair and the just' , an insult to something sacred.
When someone commits Hybris usually a God is insulted and Nemessis occurs to bring things back to order and correct the insult or injustice that happened. As a result the goddes Nemessis is not a goddess of revenge or vengeance but a goddess of order, restoring order and correcting the unfair and bringing someone who overestimated his virtues back to his rightfull place, to be more exact.
...Now claiming that the gods were 'invented' IS a hybris...very good case of Hybris...

Re: what god would you pray to?
Andraste
The Warrior Goddess of Victory
or Belatucadros
The God of War and Destruction (The Romans equated him with Mars)
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
I'm quite partial to a bit of Odin (I like the eddas and sagas too much no to).
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
I would not pray to Crom
because Crom does not answer prayers
and he laughs at those weak enough to require his help
paraphrasing Conan
I am partial to Apollo and Aphrodite.
I would make sure to give all the appropriate sacrifices however so none of the other gods felt left out. You don't want vengeful Hera or Poseidon problems.

Ahuramazda seems interesting, but I think I'd go with the Sarmatian sword in the ground.

Re: what god would you pray to?
I would pray only to a god that knows how to dance.
Like Dionysus. He's my favorite. I wish I was him. Then beer and wine would flow through me and I would make everyone happy.~:)

Re: what god would you pray to?
It would be Zeus for me (or Juppiter if you prefer his Roman name). He's got thunderbolts. What else could one possibly want?

plus all he did was sleep around with mortal women.
and yes all gods were invented, if they had not benn than all these gods we speak of would not have become...obsolete as one would say in inventors terms.
plus Nemisis's name literally means rightous anger, and she kept order by killing those who had done massive wrongs, she was sister of the furies and sent many to them.
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
Hmm...I'm surprised nobody mentioned Aphrodite.
She's such a magnificent goddess. :gorgeous: :pleased:

Re: what god would you pray to?
who can say they wouldn't want Odin be their wingman?

'Literally' it doesnt mean anything near
righteous = in ancient greek it should be something like: ithikos ? ethical
anger = thimos or orgi=rage
Literally Nemesis means nothing else than 'distribution' , Nemein= I allocate/distribute. -sis = denotes property/condition.
Nemesis is a distributor. A goddess of Order. And she is associated with Hybris and not with being an Ancient form of the X-Men. Nemesis would make things equal and just again and restore the hybris related actions. She wouldnt go around killing everyone who commited a serious crime.
Surely the medieval years and now Hollywood do not help in giving the Goddess her real identity since she has been associated with the things you mention for far too long.
I doubt it will convince you because you seem determined about it but it doesnt do harm to correct some things. ~

None. But if I was forced then the chocolate.

Re: what god would you pray to?
Baal
He's my god. I pray to him every day.
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
It depends on where and when I was living.
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
I wouldn't pray. Prayer isn't the way to revere most of the deities you list.
However, for the point of the exercise, there are quite a few badass gods out there: Donn, lord of the Celtic otherworld; Tyr, who was badass enough to Fenrir eat his damn hand right off of his arm; Nzambi, a North-West African python god after whom the word "zombie" is taken; Nergal, Assyrian god of war and pestilence...
Set still has a cult today, but it's not of the "bow and thank him for stuff" kind. The Temple of Set is an offshoot of the Church of Satan.

Re: what god would you pray to?
Dunno about praying, but I'd have a beer with Loki any day. They we'd put a sign saying "kick me" on Thor's back and pop up to Sessrumnir to see if Freya was up for some action.

Yes, that actually makes a lot of sense. I like history and sci-fi (which tends to be set in the future) and new technology.
Ok, so I am the god of time, learning, wisdom and technology.
Kind of like the Doctor. All I need is a TARDIS...

Re: what god would you pray to?
The ancient Gods did not demand monotheism, so...Minerva, for wisdom, Venus, for love and beauty, Mars, for physical prowess, and Apollo, for health.
-
Re: what god would you pray to?
I do not pray to a single god.
I am the most important. The idea of a god, is that someone or thing is more important than me. Which I will never allow. Some people will be almost equal to me, but never higher than me.

Re: what god would you pray to?
Helios. I'd probably be terrified of the sun two thousand years ago.
