EB Help Required Thread
Welcome Europa Barbarorum Fans!
Firstly I would like to introduce myself;
I am Bouchious, duely volunteered as the EB welcoming recruitment man. This thread is aimed as a place for fans and talent alike to see what positions are available and wanting with the EB group. Don't be put off though if the job or thing you thought you could help us with isn't there. Contact me anyway; EB is always happy to see people showing interest and offering help, and perhaps you never know, the job you wanted may be available!
Currently, the positions EB are looking to fill are:-
-Skinners- This folks is self explanatory isn't it, We need some who can skin, as always some who can put in the hours so to speak, Work fast and keep a high level of activity.
-A person/persons to make new resource icons for the map. - We are looking for someone familiar with 3D modelling and texturing to do low-detail work on resource icons. Other work will come on a when-needed basis; as usual members who can be highly active an ebthusiastic are wanted.
- Reseachers/Descriptive writers - Many descriptions have now been writen from scratch within EB, but that does not mean they are all there. We require someone who can research and produce building descriptions at a good pace. Access to sources/libaries are always good and healthy athough not essential as a person can always have their knowledge to fall back on! People with an interest or those who are knowledgable towards Armenia, Carthage, Pontos And the Getai are most welcome. As is the norm, the person will have to be active and show enthusiasm.
- As Above - We are in need of members with extensive knowledge of Parthia, Armenia and/or Pontos desparately, To do a job similar to the one above; Descriptions for units and buildings would be done. Knowledge is the key requirement, and as always high activity and enthusiasm are needed. Nayone who is interested please contact me ASAP.
- 3D Building Co-ordinator - We are in need of someone who is familiar with the text files surrounding building placement etc in cities/ on battlemap. This person we need to be able to implement and co=ordinate 3D building work. As per usual high activity and enthusiasm are welcomed openly.
See something you are interested in? Perhaps not? Get in contact if you are interested; Firstly you may wish to just use PM's to get in contact, or you may prefer a more direct approach although not always quicker, email me at bouchious@europabarbarorum.com.
I eagerly await any signs of interest and hopefully many potential new members. -Lu

Re: EB Help Required Thread
I have a lot of interest in EB. I wish I could join it but I'm terrible at modding.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Now, I could do the writing part. How long and indepth are you looking for?
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
I'm an aspiring semi-proffesional writer, myself...what sort of descriptions do you need?
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
If I get some time on my hands, I can be a writer. Just send me what you want me to write (notes, whatever) and tell me what to do with it. I can be a very good writer when I really put my mind to the task.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Looks like you're not lacking for writing volunteers, but that's the only thing in which I could be of any help. Here is something I wrote for the writing contest a couple of months back.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
I'm sorry, I know that above hasn't been very informative; In the future these listings will be fleshed out. By researcher/writer we mean someone who will take a list of buildings, for instance, for a particular faction, and research how these buildings would have been used by that faction in antiquity, and write descriptions for each building. The person should be highly active, proactive really, and be willing to put some time into it.
So, we'll need someone with time, a reasonably good grasp of the English language, and the committment to join the team and continue to write descriptions rather that write one, download the mod, and then disappear, as some of our recent new members have done.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
What kind of research is expected from individuals, and from which sources is such information to be derived (classical sources, modern commentaries, etc.)? I consider myself reasonably well informed about history, but I'm not certain if I could rise to the standards of EB when it comes to historical accuracy. Is there a chance you could post an example building, how research was done for it, and the description written about it? And what kind of hours put into the work are expected each week? Any information on what's expected from volunteers would be much appreciated.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Apologies, I understand my descriptions and information are inbiguous, I am ongoing in improving them, As soon as I recieve an example peice of research and outcome, which I have put in a request for, I will post it to provide you some insight, As for hours, I high level of active with the forum is always wanted, we don't want another dreaded lurker... but ultimately it is the outcomes which are wanted.
A quick note - the types of writing that we need are mostly descriptions. There will be no vanilla descriptions in EB - all vanilla ones have been wiped away. We are rewriting all unit (of course as you've seen) and building descriptions. So we need people who know a fair amount about certain factions and have access to materials that they can use to write descriptions about a certain thing - for example a Carthaginian trading port, or an Iberian market, or a Pontic road (etc.). Some factions are totally done (most celtic ones), but some like Armenia/Hayasdan, Getai, Carthaginians/Karthadastim, and some variants for Hellenic descriptions, Iberia, etc. still could use from a little to a lot of work. We also would need more than a description every four days or so. Not looking just for speed, but it would be nice if it didn't take a really long time to do them.
Hopefully that may answer some of your questions for now. -Lu

That I can do.
Honestly though, you should have two or three people working on it as a whole, so you can pick and choose which you like. Yes, it's a security risk, but it's better in the long run.

Re: EB Help Required Thread
What type of skinning do you need? I can skin some, but I don't know how to do UV mapping. Would the skins come with a base, so to speak, or be from scratch?
Examples of what I have done can be found here:

Looks like you guys have plenty of volunteers at this time, but if you do need any extra help, or someone leaves on you, just PM me. School is really lax right now so I have plenty of free time and a great interest in history. :book: :scholar:

- Mapper - We need someone to do manual map work, not such as drastic as create a map from scratch but to edit heights, borders, provinces, along with similar descr_strat.txt adjustments; this will need to be done with the actual graphicc files as using editors sometimes provides unwanted changes within some files.
I could do some map work, if you want.

you got to translate something to check if you'd be a good beta tester?
Where's the logic in that?

well. it's more of a favor..
translating somethign about the béta, since the perosn who was supposed to do it "dissapeared" (death squad...)
the logic is very very thin...
actually just waiting for DA's response..then they'll trial me for 2 weeks ~;)
tehn some torture, then the spanish inquisition drops by..more torture...
and maybe then.. i get a béta to test..~;)

If you think this is lame, then you will not like being a beta tester.
hmmmm.... open airing of frustration before even joining?
Beta Playtesting can be very dry and tedious labor. It involves checking, rechecking, and triple checking for bugs using multiple saves. Then you need to write accurate and detailed reports on what you find.
The FUN is not the beta testing or playing the current EB build. The FUN is in being a part of the greatest TW conversion of all time. The FUN is in working towards a lasting and endlessly replayable game.
So, your little task should be fun, not lame. I actually had a lot of fun putting that manual together, despite how technical it seems. If you would rather just drop the whole subject and go back to vanilla, just let me know. I need dedicated playtesters who are willing to slave along with me.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
well. i cna see the fun tehre is in making a manual.
but the translating it word-by-word i a bit tedious...it's also very hard because you start to "think" in english...when i read it teh first time. i knew "exactly" what you meant, but could hardly phrase it in Dutch....
the testing as you described it sounds like interesting. i just hopes there's enough to test...even after the OB..

so you're writing a dutch manual? that's cool but who'll check it? Or is DA dutch? :dizzy2:

Re: EB Help Required Thread
DA wants me to translate it.
i just typed over teh titles, and started discussing child-porn..with occasionally dropping a béta-testing-term ~;)
nah, juts kidding, i guess the other dutch-guys reading it can understand it, and if not they can read the same bit in english...
the weirdest part is: i should have good english skills to be part of the team...but i'm translating a guide for men that don't//how did they get it?
thinking this is a test..hope 2 days was fast enough ~;)

Re: EB Help Required Thread
Here are some Carthaginian buildings that I have been researching (I don't know if they have already been included in the mod):
The Tophet:
The Tophet found south of Carthage was a burial ground for children sacrificed to the Carthaginian deities. Wild grass and hundreds of stele, many with the symbol of the goddess Tanit mark this location. Underneath the stele are urns with the ashes of sacrificed animals and small children.

Re: EB Help Required Thread
Not to be snarky or anything, but if you require proofreading/copyediting by a non-technical gamer novice, I may be available. I'm a composition professor and professional writer if that helps. I know nothing, absolutely nothing, about modeling, modding or mapping. I'm not even sure what those terms signify beyond their alliteration.
Um, I have noticed some hilarious malapropisms in some of the material. So please, make sure that it is _someone's_ appointed task to copyedit.
This is a brilliant project. In fact, EB fulfills the rather naive expectations I had when I first bought R:TW. The units are beautiful, and I have learned more from the previews than I did in numerous dry Western Civ lectures. The scholarship is particularly impressive.
Thanks for all the work you folks have done.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
I can draw well, so I'm pretty sure I could skin models if I downloaded the programs required to do so.
I know a significant bit of history but by no means enough to be at the level of the real hardcore history guys already working on this mod so I guess that leaves writing out...
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread

Re: EB Help Required Thread
I e-mailed Bouchious about recruitment as a writer/researcher, but he asked me to post here too. I am a professional writer with a strong personal interest in ancient history, with access to research materials and some time to invest in working on EB. I'd definitely love to be involved in some aspect of EB's development.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Any groups or locations you are particullarly interested in?
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
A lot of my personal interest has been in Baktria lately, researching Greco-Buddhist art for something I was writing. But I noticed you were looking for people to help with Pontus and Parthia, and I'd be willing to help with either of those.
I guess you could say that, in general, my interests are more towards the East (Parthia, Baktria, etc.).
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Any chance Armenia? We need serious help writing descriptions for them...
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
I can certainly try to help out on Armenia, though I'll need to see what sort of research material I can find on them. But I'll definitely do what I can, sure.
EDIT: I just remembered that Xenophon mentions some information on the Armenians and I'm re-reading the Anabasis right now anyway. :)
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
I wish to be a tester.
Here's my qualties:
-Plenty of time to do testing
-Know a good amount of histroy
-Knows what unbalanced or not.
-Knows how to code a bit (I still need intstructions)
I'm able to do all the things you need me to do.
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Greetings to all. I've been watching closely this mod for a couple of days, and I'd have to say I was VERY impressed at what was accomplished. When I read you were looking for help to write up descriptions, I registered myself for that purpose. Now for my "application":
1. Although I am from a non-English based country (Portugal) I have extensive knowledge of English, and sometimes I express myself easier in English than in Portuguese. I also am a constant writer of English as I participate in Online Simulations of Ancient History/Fantasy games. I've been in those games for a couple of years now. (Here comes the publicity. Feel free to join! ~;) )
http://hoi.outboxes.com
A Final Fantasy Tactics Simulation. I am a Staff Member there
http://www.heroesofchaos.com
Though the name might be similar, it is a 16th century Japan simulation. I am only a mere player there.
2. I am aiming (still in high-school though) to become a known archeologist. I believe I have a good grasp of history all around and so on the Roman period. As such, this would be yet another challenge for me into improving myself in history. Though I only have limited knowledge of Eastern cultures, their social and military ways, I am more knowledgable on Carthagean subjects and since you were looking for them, I have applied. This is pretty much my number one reason. If it involves history, it can involve me. :P And since this is to become a realism mod, all the better.
3. I do not have any modding experience whatsoever. So if people in the EB want me to actually input my writtings in the game to check if it works, than I'd have to be told how. Meaning, I do not know how to create skins, maps, etc. I like to just write the texts.
Conclusion. I'm pretty much an historian, the previews you gave me have made me try to help you make even a better game. If you think I'm qualified for a writer job (hopefully more directed into Carthagenean affairs, I'd be extremely happy to take it.)

Re: EB Help Required Thread
I can do research. I attend Clark University in Worcester and have access to many university libraries.
I'm also a decent skinner, not great, but decent, most of the skins you guys have done look simple enough for me, the only problem is I will be away from a computer with photoshop (trial expired on the laptop I'm using) while I'm at college so this may not be possible, unless I figure out how to skin using paint shop pro.
If you need help in either of those areas still, send an email to afrey@clarku.edu
Thanks.

Re: EB Help Required Thread
edyzmedieval i'm guessing you have the OB? If so pick any description you wish, write a description for it. Post it and we'll see how we like your work. Off Topic - This thread has been quiet for so long. Almost overlooked the post. -Lu
-
Re: EB Help Required Thread
Yeah, if you want to try to write some descriptions, just keep in mind that we must focus on the period of 272 BC forward. We can't have any Dacia in the time of Imperial Rome things. Some sources on cultural things from then have to creep in, but we must keep it focused on the Getai and moreso with their Hellenic rather than Roman contacts/ties.

Yeap, I got it.
Sure, looking now for missing descriptions and making them. ~:)
Basically, they were Thraco-Dacians, with mixed influences. Tribal, Hellenic, very few Roman...Cocktail. ~D
