How expose are you online?!

I was going to post a thread about the inter-racial relation here, but this morning, I just happened to see something on other websites, and it made me thought about posting this topic.

Would you post your private life online? And if you do? How expose would you be? The reason that I ask guys here is because I came across with a women posted her private life(her kids, her life with a rich husband, their sex life, her shopping spree...balabalabala...yeah~)if you have a partner like that, would you be ok with her posting things about your life online?

As for the lady in question, she's in good company. There's a phenom here of people being absolutely exposed online, and hundreds of thousands of people seem to be doing it. I wouldn't write it all down for public consumption, personally, but I think it's a really interesting turn of events. We don't even know yet what the ramifications will be.

One of my favorite web sites, Ars Technica, is co-hosted by a guy who was turned down for a Ph.D. program because the admission committee read his blog. Interesting times.

LOL, I think it's interesting times as well. It's the first time so many people of all sorts have gotten online and are showing themselves. I still think it's safer then doing anything like you do online, on the streets, but still. If you want something to be kept private, try to supress the need to type it all out.

It's the details I don't include. Things like specific places, numbers, and all that. I'm okay with telling a story, however odd or personal. I do the same in person.

don't do it. especially on a gaming board. it's cause for regret.

It requires a level of confidence...or should I say reliance? (Early morning brain doesn't produce accurate English.) No matter online or offline. There are always things that I keep to myself.

But an online community accessible by virtually anyone almost means the most crowded square of the largest city, or prime time on the most watched TV channel. So, I do restrict a lot. How many people on the ORG know my real name --the EB community, to which I submitted a light resumé, aside-- for instance? ~;)

I’ve already acknowledged Dariush as my actual name, and there are not too many of us out there. I may be a bit too paranoid, but I wouldn’t want the authorities to bother me or my family because of something I wrote on an internet forum. Not that I think they’d come after me, but they could when I’m in Iran. I know they have imprisoned some webloggers in the past, and others have been ‘suicided’.

Only a few chosen people know my name, I even withhold my age in a lot communities.

If I have an actual friend on the internet, with whom I chat regularly or so, then I do not have any problems with exposing information of myself.
But setting information on the internet, like a blog or something, never. Who would want to read it? What purpose does it have? Do I want strange people knowing my name, age, location?

Not my idea of fun, I try not to put anything personal on the internet, funny stories are ok but that's about it. Anyway, I'm quite a private person.

I don't post anything ridiculously dangerous like my address or bank details. Other than that, I'm quite comfortable sharing with people online.

I've tried using fake very normal names like Dan, Phil, Matt etc. but now I just think that everybody thinks I'm schizo because I switch them around.

I'll just stick to signing things Taffy, I guess, although Fred is tempting.

Anyway, I like to keep my anonymity if I can. I try to avoid mentioning specific people or places and so on.

I've posted a ton of crap about myself to you total strangers.

Why? Cause it doesn't hurt. What the hell do I care if you all know my job, a little personal history, political views, what I look like, where I work, the city I live in, etc.

The only thing I would worry about is some crazy sick loner coming to kill me after I inadvertently insulted him via a game discussion board. But I don't worry about that because I am always armed.


So come and get me Redleg! I know you have a grudge! Bring it on army!~D Just kidding. I actually like you quite a bit.


But in all seriousness, what the hell is everyone so hung up about? Unless you are some ugly loner freak, pedaphyle, or other psycho. In that case, I understand. And I know this forum is browsed by hundreds or thousands of lurkers. To you all I say: JOIN THE ORG!

I'm pretty open usually when talking about something in a thread. I close my toilet door not because I want a private moment but it's because my crap stinks. I keep it reasonable as to being 'exposed' for safety reason. I hate telemarketers.

I dunno, I kind of get the feeling that if I told a whole lot of details about my life, people would get bored. I have a feeling that if I were a chick and wanted to talk about my sex life then that would be different ~:cool:

I sometimes give away more than I intended, but I'm usually pretty closed. Stories are okay, actual names, places, etc, usually aren't.

I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to pictures, but that's mostly because of how ******* ugly I am :knight:

Hm...no one actually answered the question of: What if your partner does so?

But from majority answers it looks like that guys are more likely to be private than girls. Of course, girls tends to be more gossipy and love to be more competitive about their life(eg, rich partner, sex life etc).

I just find it sad for her husband to be publicised without knowing(i think...or maybe he does know!?)~and what's sadder...is that~she is going to publish the story...into a book(I guess that's nothing new in western culture).

Wasabi, the sad thing is that people care enough to spend time/money to know information about some random person. People are sad.

The sad thing is that some would want to read the book~D

Honestly Wasabi I think the more important issue here for you personally is that we all know Pape, so don't tell us anything that Pape wouldn't want us to know!

If all involved were totally anonymous then I'd say tell what you want, no harm done. I could blab all kinds of stuff if I didn't think people would be bored stiff ~;)

I think it stems from the celebrity worship in parts of our culture. They try to add glamour to their lives.

As for me, I wouldn't let my partner do it.

The issue is that a mothers group online (they are all ethnically Chinese with ethnically European husbands) has an extrovert going into details of how many affairs she has, how often she has sex with her husband etc.

The rest of the women feel that the extrovert (see I can be PC too) is bringing a bad name for mixed couples. That her actions are self indulgent and not really in tune with the group... which is about dealing with raising a mixed family in some pretty conservative (PC statement again) countries.

Also a lot of the mothers are a little shocked that the extrovert would give so many details out about her partner.

Personally I think she craves attention and just sees her husband as a fashion accessary. This can be seen in plenty of women (and men) rich or poor but generally with little 'class' aka Paris Hilton.

My wife wouldn't be allowed to use the computer anyways. :brood:

Im very open with people I know.. including a webcam and a mic. Some people hundreds of miles away know more about my personal life than my family. ~D

But.. i would never post anything very personal on a website or where people i dont explicitely know can read it. ~:eek:

I share bits and pieces in context with topics, and discuss aspects of my private life with people I've come to know online but have never met, whom I trust to be discreet and who share in kind. I would not post a day-to-day "blog" kinda thing. I've never read one either, as they don't interest me for some reason (odd, as I thoroughly enjoy people-watching, both in the "real" world and online at places like this).

Ya never know when extreme circumstances might kick in and a "higher law" necessarily supercedes the laws of the land, resulting in unlawful action. The last thing I want in such a circumstance is for big-brother to have a lot of detailed day-to-day data about me. Hmm ... then again, it might be fun to misdirect and slow them down a bit ... Bah, that would be a waste of time--they probably already know how many hairs I have on my um .. chin at any given moment (just remembering this is Wasabi asking, not Papewaio).

No, if my significant other were to divulge anything personal about me online without my express permission, it would result in a very lengthy session with my studded double-wide ... ~;).
