Well Personally im A Big Fan Of Mounted Units And Only use Infantry To Hold Back LArge Forces Until They Get Tired Then I Send A Large Amount of Cavalry To Clean up And If Not That I Seldomely Use Full Infantry basically when im forced (sp)

If it's all up to me, though, I generally prefer the maneuverability and flexibility of cavalry and light infantry over more cumbersome heavy infantry.
Advance, strike hard, retire, and repeat until desired result is achieved. Or until you die, I suppose, but I find it best not to dwell on that possibility.
I favour a combined arms approach. Infantry to provide the anchor, and cavalry to deal the blows. But if I have to pick one, it is cavalry, preferebly armed with bows.

Combined arms is definately best. I like a mix of the heaviest down to the lightest troops. This gives you a good strong line of heavy infantry or pikes, some skirmishers and archers to drive off HA's and hit and retire types, some heavy cavalry to break heavy infantry lines (after engaging with your heavy infantry of course), or to drive off heavy cavalry, I also like having some skirmisher cavalry to pour missiles into enemy lines' flanks and sometimes add numbers to heavy cavalry charges.

Earlier, it was a fairly balanced Eastern Roman army (2 Plumbatarii, 3 Comitatenses, 1 Liminatei, 1 Eastern Archers, 1 Priests and 1 Legio Lancarii) against 5 peasants and a general.
The peasants, as you'd expect did nothing. The warlord almost singlehandedly killed 200 men. The maneuverability of cavalry is great. Can get out of sticky situations without too much loss, and if they have a good charge, they're more likely to rout the enemy.

Well, I love them equally all (Varangian Guards are cool just like Lancers, so are longbowmen, etc) but in the end of the day you don't wanna walk. As you can see, we love cars and I'm sure people back then loved horses. I prefer to mount my men. I can catch routers and when my troops rout they can flee unharmed which saves me money.

I tend to like all types of units because you need alot of flexability in war but i use Calvary as my main units such as generals usually. Sometimes Infantry cause they are cool, like Teutonic Knights.

Generally, it depends on the enemy. A balanced army should always be fought with a balanced army. An all-infantry army should definitely be fought with archers + cav combo. A predominantly missile army should be fought with cavalry. Cav army should be fought with a balanced army and preferably with spearmen/pikemen.

I'd have to say I like infantry the best. They have saved me numerous times. I like how versatile they are. I find I only use cavalry for mopping up operations or to quickly decimate missile units.

Think I really need to use cav more lol, except Javalin Cav, ive only ever used them as mob uppers except for the general. But in most wargames ive played ive always gone for troops that can shoot and fight ok in combat. Just a playstyle habbit I guess. Pharohs bowmen > all ~:joker: ~:joker:
Just thinking, In RTW my fave army is Egypt of course but in MTW, I used to play most of time as English or Turkish. Average full unit army consisted of about 8-10 archer units. LOL. Balanced? not really, but fun for sure! Those longbowmen are decent at melee when swarmed lol.

Never really liked the longbowmen in MTW. Didn't think they had the accuracy of other units although, if you use that many then the barrage of arrows you put up makes sure it doesn't rreally matter!Quote:

Hard to choose between inf and cav... I really like cav archers, warrior monks, no-dachi and bfn. But in serious games, I won't use any special units. I mostly use 4-6 ranged 4-6 inf 4-6 cav. mostly 6 ranged, 6 inf 4 cav.~:)

ps: when playing with mongols(happens rarily - i prefer hojo) I like cav the most.
I prefer balanced armies, unless a map or situation (1v2 or 2v3, or "beg mani" games) calls for something different. I try not to be attached to anything in particular (have "favorites"), as this can affect decisions depending on the opponent, environment (map), situation (weather, attacking, defending, bridge, mountain etc.). Use what is best suited for the circumstances.
STW - v1.02, 10,000 koku (most players use 10K online):
I always take 4 musket units, varying from h1-h3 (usually h2). I rarely used upgrades on them, but if I do it's always only 1 armor.
If the situation calls for an army with a ranged emphasis (usually defense), sometimes I will bring an archer or two (h0 usually; if I have extra mani then maybe h1).
I use more cavalry than average. I almost always take 2-3 (sometimes 4) Naginata Cavalry (h3-4, usually h4), and 1-2 (sometimes up to 4) Yumi Cavalry (Cavalry Archers, most often h0, sometimes h1 if I have extra mani). Cavalry Archers are great for harrassing and drawing the enemy out of formation. They can also be used to great affect by circling around back and affecting enemy morale while the enemy is engaged with other units. I like Yari Cavalry, but in a 10,000 koku army they are not as effective as Naginata Cavalry because their base morale is so much lower (4, as opposed to 8). I do enjoy Yari Cavalry's speed though. Sometimes I'll take Heavy Cavalry (h3, usually 2 along with 2 Naginata Cavalry), but again, because of the Naginata Cavalry's superior morale (8, as opposed to the Heavy Cavalry's 6) and speed, I prefer Naginata Cavalry.
I love Yari Saumurai! They handle almost all units well if you spend enough mani and honor them up. Most of my 10K armies will use at least 2 units, and often I use the max of 4 (most players still limit the maximum of any particular unit type to 4 online). I use at least h6, and use upgrades on Yari Samurai more than any other unit (w1 or w2, sometimes a1). My signature army uses 4 h7w1 (or a h7a1 variant), but these are VERY expensive, so if I do, they comprise my entire non-ranged infantry. As you can imagine, this requires some careful and effective use of cavalry and ranged units.
Yari Ashigaru are almost always banned online (they are too cheap and easy to honor up to ridiculous levels, at which they destroy just about anything; they're supposed to be peasants for Pete's sake). I don't use them in online games, but I of course, I do in Single Player games.
I use No Dachi Samurai instead of Warrior Monks. Monks are expensive, and for the same or slightly higher cost you can purchase No Dachis of 1-2 honor levels higher than Warrior Monks (h5 No Dachis, as opposed to h3 Monks; h4 monks are very expensive and usually the rest of your army suffers if you choose them in a 10K game). If I use No Dachis, I usually take 2 or 3 units, and will often use 1 or 2 weapon upgrades on them.
I don't use Battlefield Ninja online unless we are playing on very specialized maps (like Yamato). I usually use Kensai only on Yamato or like maps, though sometimes I will use them as Generals (at very low honor levels because they are so expensive and level up very rapidly during the battle). Using a low level Kensai as gen will free up mani for other units.
I rarely use Naginata Infantry. In 1.02, their base morale is low (4) when considering their cost. Also, they move very slowly, and their heavy armor causes them to fatigue rapidly. If I do use them, it's when I'm defending and plan to remain relatively stationary (which I tend not to like to do so ...). In v1.03 however, their morale is double that of 1.02, which makes them much more appealing, when defending in particular ... .
I don't use arquebusiers because they don't fire in the rain. Too much of a gamble for me, despite their low cost. Their range and accuracy also are much to be desired. I use muskets instead.
M:TW-VI
I don't have nearly as much experience with M:TW online as I do with S:TW. I use balanced armies, usually with 2-4 Archers, or Pavise Crossbows or Arbalesters (depending on the period), 3-4 Feudal or Chivalric Men-at-arms, 2-4 Militia Sergeants, and 6-7 Cavalry. The type of cavalry varies considerably depending on the faction I use. If Alan Mercenary Cavalry are available, I use them for their speed and hit-and-run ability. I love Skelezy for the same reason; though they are slower, they have a ranged attack, and melee well. If playing in the Late period I enjoy playing the Spanish for their Lancers, arguably the best Heavy Cavalry in the game if used carefully. As far as Knights are concerned, Feudal Knights with 1 more Valor seem to do better than Chivalric Knights (v1 to v0 at 10,000 florins, for example). In low florin games (5-6K), Feudal footknights make great infantry.
As far as faction-specific units go, I like the English for their Longbowmen, and will almost always take 2-3 (sometimes 4) of these when fighting in the desert. They also are a decent counter to Boyars (but ya gotta use them well, and the rest of your army too). When playing a desert game, the units I take (and factions I'll choose ...) are very different from what I normally bring to non-desert scenarios. The key with desert games is light armor. The Turks are my favorite desert faction (though I enjoy the English as well--I just use Highland Clansman, Hobilars, and Mounted Sergeants to avoid the fatigue incurred by the more heavily armored English units). Jannisary Infantry are great multipurpose units (ranged and melee), as are Ottoman Infantry and Futtuwas (higher valor is needed for these though). The Egyptians are interesting, but I've found it hard to compete with well-chosen Turkish and English armies in desert scenarios. Perhaps it's just my inexperience, as I've seen vet players do quite well with them.
I enjoy the Byzantines in Early and High periods. Their cavalry are fun and very effective if used carefully (I especially enjoy Byzantive Cavalry with their ranged capability and decent melee ability when valored up). The same applies to Byzantine Infantry, but you have to take them at high Valor. You also have to use them differently than other infantry (defensively, whereas Men-at-Arms are better played offensively).
The Russians are excellent in Early and High, but require talent to use well. Boyars backing up Militia Sergeants, accompanied by Alan Merc Cavalry, can wreak havoc in the hands of a skilled player. I have not yet acquired the special finesse to do well with the Russians consistently, but I still have fun with them.
Finally, I've seen many players use arquebusiers in the Late period, at Valor 4 with weapon upgrades (weapon upgrades are cheaper for ranged units, and Arquebusiers defend very well when used properly). I haven't had much success with them, so I rarely use them. I have run my army up against them on many occasions though (definitely not a good thing to sit there and get shot up by them ...), and as often as not, they hold me up enough for my opponent to flank with cavalry and hurt me badly, if not route me (Sir Gawaine of Orkeny is notorious for this). His signature army combines these with Longbowmen, supported by cavalry. An unusual configuration, and surprisingly effective.

i like to use infantry the most with calvary backup and if i can a few balista to chuck flaming bolts of fury into enemy lines

Unlike Toga in the post above, I'm a bit of a sucker for "favourites", which makes my battles a bit cack-handed, but fun to watch!
I love jinetes, which, if the foe stay reasonably still (and that's a big if) can be devastating and send the enemy packing before they reach your main force.
Their downfall is the "babysitting" necessary to make them effective.
But overall, I love the cav, and the potential for sweeping horse-full screenshots they give.
Saying that, a unit of my clansmen turned over a group of Bohemian feudal knights last night- maybe they are my new favourites...

My Approach To Crossing a Bridge Is Bring About 2 Or 3 Cav Archers About 3 or 4 Cav (Whichever You Want) And Some Strong infantry preferably fast now i move everyone up close to bridge and line them up as i send them off cav archers then strong infantry then cav now the point of this is the cavalry archers are able to get over the bridge fast and start firing fast this brings the ai's attention to cav they will send a few infantry or whatever and all all archers in range fire at the cav now you rush the fast infantry over the bridge and straight into the pile coming at your cav archers then a little into the skirmish
i rush cav over bridge and off to the side and if they kept there general or daimyo whichever the case i move my cav out away from skirmish i let them wait a little while full attention is on skirmish i then rush them in at the general or daimyo if this is done right the general or daimyo should be left alone in the back while other units try to stop the archers and skirmishers once the general or daimyo is dead the enemy will begin to rout another advantae to getting them in the back is once they rout your cavalry are in the back already... leaving you able to take out a vast majority of routed troops quickly and leave minimal survivors to get away to friendly province which will reduce your problems later on in campaign or whatever the case may be :D

my approach to bridge battles is just to pecker them wif fire arrows and balista bolts if possible till there morale sucks so bad that if one dude dies they run like a panzy

I'd have to say in MTW, I always dominated with
the Almohad Urban Militia as my core army. They
still maintained the maniple or legion formation.
In RTW, I happen to enjoy the punishment the
Phalanx Pikeman can deliver if on attack, or defence.
They are efficient too, and in loose formation, easy to mobilize.
In BI, The Warlord does measure for measure, punish
the enemy. they eventually pay for their recruitment tenfold.

That's a decent description of how I developed after my Scythia campaign. I never use pause so my attention is limited. Now whatever faction I play, I use Cav at the beginning, middle, and end of a battle. "Alas mere infantry, poor buggers".

im an Infantry man myself. i prefer to take cav as a back up and only take about 3-4 units, with 90% of my army infantry.

i like all equally well in M:TW i do, havnt really played Rome or shogun. Both play a part in my battle plan. but, maybe i prefer cavalry more, just because of their destructive power, Royal knights, or gothic knights, but also i like cannons when you can get them ~D ~D
If only one choice: Hun Elite Cavalry.
Infantry is the heart of any army, for me at least. My missles units and cav are there only to support my normal 4 Halberdiers and 4 CMAA.

i've recently been using a little more cavalry in my recent spain campaign... mostly infantry tho... i usualy have my sub general lead a unit of clavery "secretly" behind the enemy army to take out any balista/onagers they may have then retreating further behind the enemies then when the battle finaly gets under way the enemy experiances a major calvary charge from behind splitting the enemy up and even causing masse routes if i'm lucky
