Serious Elton John Marraige poll (no gay bashing!!!)and discussion

Do you believe Elton Johns marraige will have an impact on the debate about gay marraige. I for one believe it will moreso than othe celebrity homosexual unions. What's your opinion?

You mean that Elton John is so popular that if he marries that all opposers start to accept their short-sightedness?

Meh is right, it probably have no effect on the debate. Some fence-sitters may be more accepting of gay marraige, but they aren't the ones making the noise. The serious opponents and proponents will continue as before, it won't affect the debate at all. I'm sure it will be in the news for a good long time. :san_rolleyes:

I don't think it will make that much difference, possibly a little bit for the better.

More importantly, I am very proud that this Labour govt has extended the rights for homosexuals and other minorities and we have got to the point where gay people can now even marry. Never would have happened under a Tory administration. Well done Labour and the UK.

Gay "marriage". Don't much care really. The world certainly hasn't ended like some seemed to think, nor has God struck the infidels down with holy fire. Though there is still time, he might be busy. Anyway if Elton John wants to give his lover rights to his property if he dies (or, for that matter, if they split) then fair enough.

Marriage in all but name - same rights, responsibilities and service. Even the news stations over here refer it as marriage, but if it saves your face and your demented belief system that it really isn't marriage, then sure, go for it.

Actually I think as far as Elton John and his partner are concerned, it apparently was a marriage and not just a civil union.

The fact that it is not a legally acknowledged marriage does not mean that it is no marriage at all (AFAIK "marriage" is not a church or state registered brand).

If you refuse to call it marriage, that's your choice.

As for Dave's question - I think the impact will be at most incremental, I do not think that a lot of people who are against gay marriage will change their mind based on this case.
The ones who are sitting on the fence might be influenced either way - the fact that this gay marriage involved some colorful celebrity does not necessarily give gay marriage a touch of "normality"

meh Civil union is just used to side step the church. Two guys married they arent hurting anyone the apocolypse isnt here. So I see no reason why gay marrige isnt legal.

The reasoning is quite simply because people don't know / want to know the good thigns Labour does or cannot understand why they are different to the Tories. Elton John is a popular and high-profile enough figure that his "marriage", however it turns out, cannot avoid having some impact on the debate one way or the other.

Should have some effect. Since they're such a high profile couple whatever happens will provide a clear example for future debates to use, either for or against gay marriage depending on how it goes.

Maybe you can pretend they are not children but instead 'kids' for we all know the difference between a kid and child is huge!

Hopefully the whole country will soon, but my state already did, Ha!

I don't know if they can adopt here (Vermont), but they have been able to get civil unions for a while know.

You are quite right, though, there is a great deal of divorce these days, and our decadent, gender-confused culture is the main cause of that. I never said marriage was sacred, but it is a useful ideal. Should we poop on an ideal just because now fewer people are following it?

No one said they shouldn't have the same rights. If a Heterosexual man marries a woman, it's called a marriage. If a Homosexual man marries a woman, it's called a marriage. I'm not saying that Homosexual men SHOULD marry women, but if they do, they will be afforded exactly the same rights as anyone else.

And who said that following a gay lifestyle was a crime? I don't think it's a crime. I am sorry if you feel that I have been oppressing you, either for being gay or for being a Christian (I'm not quite sure which). Aside from that, I dislike the stigma that gays get, like they're some kind of inhuman abomination. No. They just prefer men to women for the same reason that straight men prefer women to men, its all about the chemicals in the brain. Mind you, I don't dislike gays, I just sometimes have a hard time being around a guy that oggles other guys, or says things like "skiddles. or fabulous. or super." (I'm not trying to be durogatory, I know that most gays are about as similar as Jag and Gawain)

Call it whatever you will, I'd prefer we call all marriages civil unions, that way when you probably divorce the person that you formerly loved, you don't have to feel guilty about it. After all its just a 'civil union'. Damn hypocrits and their power vacuum :san_angry:

I doubt Elton John's marriage will have much impact, if at all.

But since we're reaching the favourite topic of mine again (alright, it's not "favourite" and I'm not that interested, in case people want to jump to conclusions :san_laugh: ) I still wonder why gay marriage is so wrong.
