Someone at the DCMS seems to have taken one of those pub conversations and made a career out of it. Anyway, here is is in all its glory, a website asking you to nominate and vote on icons of Englishness.
Of course I'm sure all you naughty foreigners wouldn't do what the English would do and try to vote a pair of knickers top of the poll...
(I voted for the Spitfire and the stiff upper lip myself, hurrah for Blighty...)

Well, stiff upper lip being originally an American phrase, I can't honestly go for it... Being a good honest (well...) expatriate though... 'And did those feet, in ancient lands...' etc.
Also went for the panto, and our sense of humour - it's not our fault no-one else has one worth a damn... Also our countryside - though to be honest, it's pretty much just the largest garden known to man...
Several others caught my eye - a good proper afternoon tea for example - with cucumber sandwiches! But since they weren't together... no. Oxford nearly got it as well, the grand sneer - I mean tour too.
The people of England sadly do not exist anymore - well, not in England - they're all abroad!
Can't even go for St George either - he's Armenian, plus, Georgia gives him his proper due as a patron saint, we don't, so we don't deserve him.

well, it's never right is it? and Michael Fish always gets it wrong too.
i would say fish and chips is quintessentially British, but curry is actually the most commonly eaten food in the country and has been for ages...
as if meat pies werent bad enough, i just learned about black pudding...BLOOD, black pudding is stinking BLOOD, i don't think i've ever felt so much respect for the brits until i realised they were a bunch of tea drinking blood eating (eat blood?:inquisitive: ) vampires. and pray tell, whos blood is it, the patron saint of englands maybe?

BTW did you know that in the wild the haggis' left legs are longer than their right ones. That's so they can run around the hills and stay upright. Only if they run clockwise though, if they run anti-clockwise then they fall over. :laugh4: :inquisitive: :laugh4:
you can also get sheep blood black pudding but pig blood is by far the most common.

yeah, healthy food sucks. give me chip butties and beef dripping any day. i think heavy 'cold weather' food is a very British thing.
of course, it would also be quite British if our tanks and guns didn't work in the rain, just like they don't work in the desert...

I hope you are talking about deep fried battered spam, like we used to get at school.
that is the only way to eat spam. although i used to eat it raw, so to speak, at scout camp. lovely spam.

Just got into them again after a 15 abstinence. I like to use the crust as the platter and butter both sides of the buttie, with real butter not that margerine trash, bit of salt and vinegar and last but not least tomato catsup, smothered would be a good verb.Quote:

How in the name of Zeus did this poll get created without the single greatest British contribution to civilization being offered as an option. Gin although correctly identified by your good self as a British (ahem!!!! English, but we won't go there) it actually derives from our good neighbours over in the Low Countries, I believe they call it Genevre, but I'm sure that our Dutch fellows can erudite much more than moi.
