Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
This historical mod covers the great struggles for supremacy in Italy in the timeframe 333BC - 222BC.
After the Defeat of the Aequi, the conquest of the Etruscan city of Veii and the definitive submission of the Latins, Aurunci, Volsci, Hernici and the Campani of Capua, Rome emerged as one of the main powers in Italy ready to engage the other nations for the supremacy on the peninsula.
With the great invasion of the IV century BC some of the most warlike tribes among the Celtic nations settled in northern Italy; the surviving Etruscan cities, after the setback of the previous years, found the way for a more effective collaboration to contrast their foes. In the highlands of central and southern Italy the strong Italic nations were at the top of their power, expanding at expense of the Greek poleis of the old "Magna Graecia".
In the heel of Italy Alexander of Epirus, uncle of Alexander the Great, has just landed in help of the rich Greek town of Tarentum, aiming to emulate the achievements of his nephew; in the meantime the powerful Greek Syracusae is in continuous attrition with Carthage to control the rich lands of Sicily.

Hi P.I. team,
This mod is beautiful and unique.

Please release this soon :sweatdrop: It's too good!

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
How do you get onto the Capitoline and through the gate? Would you have to have a spy opening the gates successfully?
Its looking good, and its very exciting. The faction previews are nice looking as well.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Rome looks really great but I doubt anyone will be able to capture it, especially the AI.
I don't see the AI getting all the way up to the Capitoline to capture the citysquare.

...thanks a lot for your appreciations; ...well ...I'm also the mapmaker of the mod, so the map is entirely my own work. Let me say that a mod which aims to re-make the whole game, actually needs almost a year (or more) of work ...we started to work on "Paeninsula Italica" in september 2005 ...my best wishes for your mod

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Greetengs Luciano B!
First, I want to thank you for your great mod! Excellent idea, excellent models, excellent skins, excellent map, excellent everything! And I don't understand why the guys here... err, ignore this thread :gah:
I'm waiting for this mod since the 1st preview, and I must say that the previews are complex and informative. But some things are still unclear to me. Here they are:
1) Which way will the Pyrrhos army be represented in the game? Will you create some special models/skins for them? I think that Pyrrhos must be a mighty general with full stock of high level and UNIQUE (please!) units, landing in the south of Italy (just like in RTR). But I would like to know it for certain and directly from you.
2) Is there some kind of "Polybian" reforms for Romans? I'm not sure about the time when Velites appeared instead of Leves, Rorarii and Accensi, and when the Romans adopted chainmail armor, but it seems to me that it was before 222 BC and the beginning of the Second Punic War.
3) And finally, are you planning to release an open beta before the final release? ~:)
Thanks in advance, and sorry for my poor English.
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
First of all, I would thank Justiciar and iglauskas for their support ..at least we can still rely on a couple of fans:)
1) Pyrrhos' Army, and also the other invading armies of Cleonymus of Sparta and of Alexander of Epirus will be present in our game as spawning armies which will appear in the game by a proper script in the historical date of their arrival. These armies will include their own specific units, an will be reproduced like "rebel" subfactions.
2) The Roman army reproduced is the so called "Camillian" organization. It is not sure when the "Polybian" model entered in use, but some scholars suggest that it happended during the struggle against Hannibal, other instead suggest that it happened before. However it isn't any source which provide a precise date of the introduction of the "Polybian" organization. The adoption of chainamail armour by the Romans seem also to date after the assimilation of the Celtic tribes of northern Italy.
3)Yes, I would like to release a beta version of the mod to collect suggestions from the players and fix the wrong stuff.
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Thanks alot for your answers, Luciano B ~:) This mod is the best (along with The Crusades by Caius Britannicus)
I don't think that you are lack of fans... Look at Paeninsula Italica subforum at TWCenter! But maybe you should post previews more often, making them smaller in size.
And in the end, one more question. Can you post some info on this Antesignani unit? I've heard about them, but I thought they appeared during the imperial, or, at least, late republican period.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Silence.......... ~
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
...here I'm:)
...about the "antesignani" ...well, another very debated thing ...they are mentioned some times by Livy, but there aren't precise informations about their organization; they seem to be picked infantrymen drafted from the legion but armed with a lighter equipment, often ordered to run out and capture eminences of tactical importance; Livy mentioned for the first time the "antesignani" in his report of the battle of Lake Trasimene.
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Thanks for the answer...
...but don't hope I'm out of questions! :eyebrows:
So, another portion of them:
1) You've made 2 Etruscan factions. Does this mean that they will be allied at the start of the campaign, in the same fashion the roman factions were allied in vanilla RTW? And will they hipothetically be able to begin war with each other?
2) Carthage is the only superpower represented in the mod (actually, Carthage was the only superpower in the Western Mediterranian during that period :laugh4: ). Will they get reinforcements from their main territories in Africa and Iberia? I think that it would be great for representing Poeni as the ONLY "imperial" faction in the game!
3) Are you going to make Latin allies for SPQR? They played an important role in roman warfare during the IV and III centuries BC.
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
I decided to start to post some minipreviews covering the mercenary, regional and foreign units which will be present in our mod. Let's start with the Spartans.
SPARTAN HOPLITES
Spartan warriors become involved several times in the Italian wars, since both Tarentum and Syracusae were Doric colonies often rescued by Sparta in the dangerous moments of their history. Southern Italy saw also a couple of expeditions by members of the Spartan royal house. In 343 King Archidamos of Sparta landed with a Spartan and mercenary force; he was killed in battle and his men surrounded and wiped by the Lucani and the Messapians. Next was Kleonymos, who brought 5.000 mercenaries from Greece, recruited 5.000 more in Italy, was given 20.000 Tarantine citizen foot and 2.000 horse, and was joined by other Italiote cities and the Messapii. He was feared by Taras as he was too ambitious so he turned his attention on the northern Adriatic for an attempt of invasion of the Venetia, maybe instigated by Taras to keep him away; he started the invasion with a serie of raids against the Venetic coastal settlements, but the sudden reaction of the Veneti nearly destroyed his entire force and only a small part of his army with few ships could escape.
Class divsions were sharp in Spartan society. True Spartan citizens were a minority class, the "Spartiatai"; the bulk of the population of Lakonia, Sparta's province, were helots, serfs who only served the army. There were lower grade citizens at Sparta itself, the "hypomeiones" who had been demoted from full Spartan status, and the "neodamodeis, helots given a low grade citizenship in return for military service. There were also the "perioikoi", the citizens of the other towns of Lakonia.

Models & skins by Luciano B. Thanks to Topus Magnus who provided his wonderful leather "spolas" cuirass used in our "Hoplitai Lakedaimonoi".

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Looking fantastic. Certainly one of the most extensive mods in development, and the kind of more regional campaign I was hoping to see more of after RTW was released. Keep up the good work!
So if I understand correctly, units such as these spartans will turn up in an army created by a script at a specific date, right? Any chance of such a script being made so they appear when certain cities are threatened or if a certain faction reaches a certain size or weakens significantly?
And will such units also be recruitable as mercenaries?
Like I said, great work!

The foreign invading armies which actually landed in Italy in the timeframe covered by our mod will appear in the game in a certain time by script (they will work as "rebel" sub-factions), like the armies of Cleonimus of Sparta, Alexander of Epirus and Pyrrus. Maybe also an hypothetical invasion of Alexander the Great with his cosmopolite army may be introduced in the game using the same system...
Spartan troops will be also available for Tarentum and Syracusae using something like the "client kingdom" script, which allows to receive periodically or after a specific event a foreign supporting army.

First, very impressive work, keep it up!!
By "rebel" subfactions, do you mean emergents factions and will you use Epistolary Richard's "all factions playable" ??
Would be fun to play Pyrrhus.
Waiting your mod to re-install BI.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
GREEK MERCENARIES
Greek Hoplites
https://img277.imageshack.us/img277/...recivf7.th.jpg
I modelled a separate part for the "linotorax" cuirass; the shape of the new part allows to set the pteruges (the lower fringes) in the actual right position to cover the abdomen and the pelvis, and not over the legs.
https://img277.imageshack.us/img277/...oraxal3.th.jpg
Greek Ekdromoi (light) Hoplites
https://img312.imageshack.us/img312/...reciql9.th.jpg
I provided also a new part for the "perizoma" (abdominal protection) which is now separate from the tunic and has a more rigid look than the draps of the tunic.
https://img312.imageshack.us/img312/...zomapz1.th.jpg
Greek Peltastai
The shape and the decorations of the shield are in the style of the Thracian pelte wich become very popular among the Greek light troops.
https://img372.imageshack.us/img372/...recigi1.th.jpg
Rhodian Slingers
I added also a kopis to the equipment of these light missile troops, since I supposed that well payed mercenaries like the Rhodians could afford some effective weapons to defend themselves if attacked in close combat.
https://img247.imageshack.us/img247/...odiiwi1.th.jpg
Cretan Archers
What distinguished the Cretan archer from his common counterpart was the bronze round shield. Shielded archers are depicted but rarely in Greek art, sometimes the shield looks as large as the hoplon, other times just smaller as the pelte. Often these archers have also the helmet, like the Chalcidian one used in our model that I drafted from a vase of the "Altamura painter". Following the hypothesis advanced by N.V. Sekunda I provided black tunics for our Cretans.

Right now the 20 faction slots available are all occuped by the current factions.
The invading armies will belong to normal rebel sub-factions and they'll be not playable.
For the future, we are planning also some other settings of the factions changing one of the two Etruscan factions with an emerging Epirote faction leaded by Pyrros, or a Macedonian one attempting an hypothetical invasion of Italy with the cosmopolite army of Alexander the Great.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Great units! :2thumbsup: Very impressive! I think that your models and skins are among the best.
Are you going to add these new details - "a separate part for the "linotorax" cuirass" and "a new part for the "perizoma" (abdominal protection)" for the units that are already done (Italiotae and Syracusae, for example)?

Are you going to add these new details - "a separate part for the "linotorax" cuirass" and "a new part for the "perizoma" (abdominal protection)" for the units that are already done (Italiotae and Syracusae, for example)?
...yes, I would like to update the old models with the new features.
Thanks again.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Looking great. Your models somehow look more realistic than many mods', in the sense that the clothes and armour look like they're actually being used and aren't too ornate, with more subdued colours. Any plans to improve the battlefield ground textures and vegetation to match this more realistic look? It'd be the finishing touch, I think.

Good news! :2thumbsup: I hope that wouldn't take too much time, though...
It would be great to see the release of the mod till the end of Summer. ~

Then pardon for the interruption, Luciano B... :laugh4:
Thanks for the great news!!! Good luck with the completing of the beta!!! :2thumbsup:
P.S. When you have time, can you give the list of what will be included in the first beta, please?

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
...you're welcome iglasukas:2thumbsup:
I don't know how many features we'll be albe to introduce in the first beta; however the full cultures/factions conversion is already done and also all the new models and skins for all factions are ready and will be surely present. Some mercenary and regional units need still to be completed, and probably the full range of that kind of units will be completed in a further future step.

...by now we didn't make any attempt in that direction ...maybe in the future, when the main features of the mod will be completed...
Thanks a lot to all, gentlemen, for the precious encouragements.

These things seem optional to me... But it would be nice if you include some mini-mods that are already done, such as realistic tree size mod and grass mod by Prometheus...
Anyway, beta version is beta version and all this stuff may wait till the final release I think. ~:)
And please, can you answer these questions:
1) You've made 2 Etruscan factions. Does this mean that they will be allied at the start of the campaign, in the same fashion the roman factions were allied in vanilla RTW? And will they hipothetically be able to begin war with each other?
2) Are you going to make Latin allies for SPQR? They played an important role in roman warfare during the IV and III centuries BC.
-
Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
...some answers:
1) The second Etruscan faction is intended to be "optional"; maybe in the beta version we'll exchange it with the "Sabelli" faction (representing the "Sabellic League" which included some tribes like the Marsi, Paeligni, Vestini, Marrucini and the Frentani); however we are planning some alternative campaigns, one of them with two or maybe more Etruscan factions allied from the start; since we are using the engine of BI and not of RTW they'll be free to attack each other and not forced to remain allied for a long time like in RTW.
2) It depends upon what you mean with "Latin allies"; if you mean the people living in the other cities of Latium and formerly part of the "Latin League", according to Livy during the "Roman - Latin war" of 340-338 BC they were organized in the same way of the Roman troops (hastati, principes and triarii) so they will not look different from Roman troops. If you mean instead the Italic allies with "Latin laws" (the Italic subdued communities forced into alliance with Rome) they'll be simply represented by the regional units which will be recruitable by the Roman player in a conquered province.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
The previews look great as usual btw. I'm loving the campaign map.

Re: Paeninsula Italica - Radices Imperii
Thanks for the answers, Luciano B :2thumbsup:
P.S. Since I began interesting in your mod, I've known a lot about the history of ancient Italy - thanks for this too! (Such knowledge is very precious for me, cause I'm a historian myself.)

Thanks a lot Myrddraal ...I would like to return to work on the map to enrich a bit the terrain features, maybe after the beta will be completed, since some lands still look a bit flat, some rivers run over the hills ...and similar little things that I would like to fix.
