Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
I just made a custom battle where I was The Greek City States and I used 2 units of Spartans (huge unit size) and with full upgrades. I pit them against 4 full stack allied AI armies composed mainly of eastern infantry with archers and some cavalry/chariots (no upgrades) So my 321 Spartans against 28,000 of the enemy.
What followed was a bloodbath! My Spartans were quickly surrounded but they fought to the death and although they all died they killed many thousands of the enemy.
What a beautiful death!

I should try that one time, but yes, Spartans are tough. That's why everyone spams them in multiplayer and have them form into a phalanx square.
Spartans are overrated, IMHO.

You just contradicted yourself ;) .

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff

Seriously, I only modded their moral. That's really all. They did die after all.

I forgot to mention, all these people slowed my computer to like 1 frame per second :dizzy2: not very good. But it speeded up after the Spartans did a lot of their "work"

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
I wonder what freud would have to say if you, by your own choice, let your 321 fight against 28.000 foe
what is next, 150 against 50.000? or, you hope you can win?
:-)
do you still know the exact endscore?

Maybe I have some screen shots lying around. I'll look.

He would probably say that “the male’s aptitude of sexual urges hence thought-provoking the more callous aspects is identical to the modernistic conduct off fornicating deviance”.

Morale is also an attack modifier. Morale doesn't simply affect running away.

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
spartans are good unit but not undefeated
even in phalanx they are much more vulverable to missiles than normal phalanx. best option against them is using unit with armour piercing (slingers) or urban cohorts with hold formation turned on. pilums do job instead of men :duel:

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Men in little red skirts tend not to have the best missile defense.
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
well... they might be though.... but let them try to stop an Onager or those chariot catapult thingies...

Why do you think so? I have never heard off this. In practically all TW releases morale only influenced when combat was broken off, not the actual combat in itself.

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
spartans got weak missile defence
they just got 2 hp
so at the beginning they seem undefeated - they have no loses for some time.
but after about 20 - 30 seconds they start dying

And with RTW's combat system, that 20-30 seconds will win the battle for you.

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
no m8
just use urban cohort, give it hold formation
and it should win with spartans (i mean ideal conditions - no forest no montain no general bonuses)
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
i diasagree, keep your spartans in phalanx but turn their guard mode off and they`ll still plow through a unit of urbans in front of them.
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
well they were the hard asses of the ancient world

sorry for anyone who's confused heh...

Thank you, and do you have anything to say about the spartans so this doesn't get deleted?

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
I'm not saying you copied threads, but on totalwar.com forums a member by the name of Seleucos made a thread with this exact same name "Wow, Spartans are tough" and with exactly what you did...
That's freaky!:laugh4:
(unless you are Seleucos from those forums and in that case whats up man?!?!?)

I never read the thread, but I glanced at the title and I just thought it perfectly suited this thread, so I used it.

actually yes...a long time question that I never really asked or saw answered: What are their abilities versus frontally attacking cavalry? do they carry the same (or a similar) effect as spearmen or do they react the same way as light infantry?

They're phalangites. ~ 'Nuff said.

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
just buy an urban cohort (romans) and they will take of spartans. though i thin spartans shuold be the stronget infantry and they should wear a helmet like armoured hoplites.

Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
I think that the Testudo bug used by some Urbans would beat the Spartans.
A testudoed unit when ordered to move behind a phalanx unit of equal or less 'level' will push the phalanx unit apart. It was mentioned a while ago, but I don't think it was addressed in any of the patches.
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Never seen Spartans in RTW.
Athens and Corinth going to fall next. Wont belong after that and my Brutii force will seek out these so called 'tuff men'.
Screenshots will follow of dead 'tuff men'. As I play slow, real slow, it maybe a week or two though.

Eh? Aren't phalangites the people with the long Macedonian sarissa that have spears longer than the Spartans?
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Phalangites in the RTW sense, which is to say able to use the phalanx formation. Although you are as such correct; by what I've read of it the Greeks weren't overly interested in carbon-copying the Mac system, meaning there were functional differences between their close-order spearmen and the Diadochi phalangites.
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Yeah that's what I thought. The Macedonians had really long spears, but the Spartans had the normal hoplite spear and their famous short sword. When complaining about the length of his sword, a Spartan was told by his mother to 'take a step forward and it will be long enough'
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Spartan unit (80men) routed when down to 50 men. Not that 'tuff'
https://img122.imageshack.us/img122/...66s83da.th.jpg
They didnt last long after that.
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Severous.. the thing is that you massively outnumber them 692:50, and their general is dead. Normally if you take one unit against the Spartan hoplites, unless they're against very long spears or an Urban Cohort, the other unit has no chance really (in hand to hand combat).
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
Hi Tiberius
Ive no doubt they are tough in a 1-2-1 fight.
They were surprisingly fast when they charged wielding their swords.
They took out at least one bodyguard before they broke.
Like any elite unit they can be taken. In this case massed pila/javlin did the weakening, then numbers, general dead, from behind, cavalry did the rest.
I was a bit disappointed. I had expected the Spartan unit to suffer many more losses before they broke.
PS: RTW V1.5 H/H
My General is +2 command +1 Greek Turncoat +2 Good Defender (=5 Stars)
-
Re: Wow, Spartans are 'tuff
With all that, they've already stuck around far longer than any other unit would. Most units just run at the sight of the rest of the army.
