Best leader of our time.
Ok, so we've seen the posts, we've read the threads, and we have trash talked just about every world leader of a major country. bush is an idiot, blairs a whimp, chivec is a jerk, ahmadinejad is a phsyco, and north korea is to obvious to state.
so then in your opinion, who is the greatest national leader in 2006. will he be chinese, or nordic, or other, you decide.

Happy to play, but I need some clear definition of parameters first. Greatest by what criteria?
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
one who has won the love of his populace by bringing his country massive profits, or lifting the status of living in his country. he who has brought his country into a better light as viewed by the rest of the world.
-
Re : Best leader of our time.
Angela Merkel's start has been promising.
Of the leaders of other major countries, Blair is the only one who isn't a complete and utter joke.
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
Arguably Viktor Jushenko (sp), although I hear corruption is ripe once again.

I'd go for Viktor too, even if the Westernization of his country seems to be trading one mafia for another.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Blairs the only leader of a major power that i respect, although its hard as all leaders are to an extent dislikable...
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
George Bush, definately needs to be up there. He's the only leader around with a backbone these days. One of the few politicians who will righteously raise their middle finger to the protestors if he believes it could help our country. Sure you can rag him for the war in Iraq, but every president since the gulf war has wanted to invade. Clinton wanted to invade but was talked down to sending over some cruise missles. People may disagree with what he does, but at least he does it for the right reasons. He isnt like those guys in congress who wouldnt kill an ant if it meant it could offend .00001% of the population. Bush is truly a leader, and not just a politician.

Instead he offends 99.9999% of the population. :dizzy2:
He gets a C or D by his supporters on this forum.
Guts without sence doesn't make a great leader.
On the homefront I would give Göran Persson and B, but having him as the greatest leader would be :fainting: :eeeek:
The "problem" with decent leaders is that they rarely end up in the media, so I cannot really say anyone from the top of my mind.

Re: Best leader of our time.
It's a pretty poor crop at the moment. Does it always seem this bad at the time? Maybe better in hindsight...
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
our time? be more specific - you mean the last 50, 20, or 10 years?

When he said our time I assumed that he meant THIS DAY and forward, if it is 100 or 50 years back, clearly Lenin or Mao would take the spot!

Re: Best leader of our time.
As Louis has stated, Merkel has had a good start, as has Stephen Harper of Canada.

Yes :2thumbsup: Maybe we'll know their names in 50 years from now, maybe not... But I think the best leader is to find among those who haven't been in the papers.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Toughie. Not too many good world leaders today, but I like Merkel and I like the Polish dude. Putin would be cool if he wasn't such a commie. I dunno if Sharon is still alive even, much less a world leader. If he was, he'd get the honor without hesitiation.
Kim Jong-il gets honorable mention just for being weird. I mean, come on. Look at the guy. He's pathetic.
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
Might as well nominate Castro as well. His ability to stick it to the big guy constantly and come out more or less unscathed astounds me. A toast to him!
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
Don't know what you mean by "better" but I'll go with Ernesto "Che" Guevara.:book:

Unnecessary right wing agitation. Check again "leader" vs. "hero". And recheck "hero" vs "what you think is an hero".
EDIT: Spelling.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Politicians should not be leaders.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Stephen Colbert, for leading his nation into an age of hillarity never before known to me. :laugh4:

Re: Best leader of our time.
I'll go with Castro. He's not really the best, but, in a sense, I have to admire him.

Well, in these terms, Wen Jiabao, Premier of China, will be hard to beat in 2006.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Hugo Chavez.
There are very few other world leaders who have successfully brought such joy, happiness, prosperity and justice to as many people as him. Every person should not only respect what he has and is doing for his people, but do exactly the same for their own nations.

If you can find some balanced articles about him on the Internet, please pass on the links. It's hard for me to find good information. The news here is so slanted or incomplete. While some of our news agencies don't treat him as a wacko, they spend more words on the controversies than the substance of the man and his policies.
I hope you're right about him.

Nah , some very good policies and some very bad ones , just another politician .

There was a brilliant article written in the New Statesman at the end of last year which sums up Chavez's achievements fairly well.

I believe you have to pay for articles or be a subscriber, but I also think you can view one article a day free of charge, so you should be able to see it.
If you want some more personal accounts and further information, Johann Hari did two good articles on him when he went to Venezuela.

All worth reading by all.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Bobby Cox... He's led the Braves to 14 consecutive division titles and last year did it again with the largest contengent of rookies any team has ever fielded and led to a division title. His greatness knows no bounds. We just won't talk about his play off record.:laugh4:

Tach is a very intelligent man, he can come to the conclusions himself, I am sure.
Have you actually read the articles, or is the horror of actually reading about the benefits of socialism / Chavez, too hard to bear?

JAG's got a good point for everyone. We should all read what we can before drawing conclusions. I know I haven't had the most balanced information about Chavez and I'm really interested in knowing more. I hope he will do well for Venezuela.

Re: Best leader of our time.
Okay. I'll bite.
Colin Powell. Here's why:
The man was the dissenting voice of the Bush administration and regular fought withiin the administartion for what he believed what right.
Even after being set up as the fall guy at the UN, Powell departed from the administration- something lesser men in pursuit of power would NEVER do. He clearly is in no pursuit of power.
Powell is a man of inegrity who is not afraid to take right action but also knows when it is his place to follow.
This man, as the President of the United States, would end up in the history books as one of our greatest presidents ever.
And the man has no desire to run! What a tragedy.:shame:
-
Re: Best leader of our time.
Colin Powell? Yeah whatever! A little research on him will show you more dirt then most politicians, irrespective to his military history.
-
Re: Best leader of our time.

As an outsider to your country, I would tend to agree and would look forward to such a presidency. I think he might accomplish what Rabin did for Israel and the Middle East - a proven warrior but with the intelligence and courage to see beyond the yah-boo, tit-for-tat politics. A man whose people would trust him to take care of their interests strongly, whilst still being able to find a way to peace through integrity.
