He's turning 70 and I am really going to miss him. My faction leader and conquerer of Greece, destroyer of Macedon.
In his life time he took almost every Greek city. A massive retinue, a ton of excellent traits. I am wondering if I should get another worthy general in his city to transfer some of that star-studded retinue...I want to but it just doesn't seem right.http://home.comcast.net/~azatogg/Vibius_the_Butcher.jpg
I symphatize with you man. Once, I too, had a faction leader who seemed to be a god himself. He held the office of Pontifex Maximus for 2 terms, conquered Carthage and Numidia, managed to get the Egyptians to agree to becoming a protectorate of the family of Scipii and destroyed both Macedon and the Greek cities in one fell swoop. Need I mention that the people of Rome love him?
As for those retinues, they might prove to be of better use to his successors. Think of it as passing down the skills and knowledge of a great man.
Take lots of screen shots of him in action whilst you can and……
…write his life story up.
That way, he’ll never be far away.
He looks healthy for a 69 year-old. No worries, you can share another 10 years with Vibius. Except a Samrmatian arrow hits him in the eye or a Seleukid elephant decides to trample on his fancy helmet....
I love this kind of "character role playing" a lot. I really am getting sad/mad if i loose one of my beloved, , occansional drinking, bloody-handed and freakin´dangerous warmongers.
I've never had "the butcher" as a nickname.
Always "Victor", "The Cunning", "Bloody-handed", but never "the Butcher".
I once had an Aurelius "The Mad", I loved his speeches at the beginning of a battle. He always said something like: "nobody likes to be here, I would prefer to be at my mother's house, but oh well, since we're here, let's get started" :)
He was useless as a governor and as a general (all his traits together gave him a total of -7 command and, if I remember it correct - 3 management) and he had no influence (also - x).
But I loved him.
Unfortunately he died heroically in battle at the age of 22 ~:mecry: .
Strange, how one can get attached to a computer generated character...
I only wish- for faction leaders and exceptional generals, there was a more detailed character card that would still be accesable after his death. Something that listed all the normal stuff + battles won/lost, cities taken, accomplishments etc.Quote:

Well every city he conquered he put the people to the sword. The resulting torrent of blood tends to cleanse the streets of squalor so the town may rise anew. I think Vibius would see this more as proper hygene than as any kind of sadism.Quote:

Hahaha the cool thing about RTW is that they can pull off that kind of comedy without making the game its self silly. Those characters are as much fun as the expert ones.Quote:

That would be an awesome addition to RTW. Kind of like a more detailed family history rather than the usual(and crappy) info when you point at their photos in the family tree(like: Born 253 bc-died 22bc). Another thing would be to add more info about the classic battles(the ones represented by crossed swords on the campaign map). As of now, all they do when you point at them is show you who the lose and victor are, not the unit compositon nor the quantity of units involved. Would anyone out there know if this is possible? My modding skills are non-existent and I probably wouldn't even know where to look at.Quote:

In a defensive campaign lasting many years Ive used assassins for the first time. And used them a lot. The faction leader became 'the killer' and later 'the cold hearted'. Had not seen these before.

Some of the Generals and Faction Leaders are real triumphs, and its a waste to end up just a greyed out face on a family tree.

My best general was "Theages the cold-hearted"...formerly "the-mighty" with him, i conquered the italian pininsula, sicily, and most of the greeks. He had superiopr attacker and defender, and his command was in the roof. I was playing the carthaginians...but that was deleted about 6 months ago.

about the crossed swords, it would be great if you could right click them to bring up the recorded battle. All "great battles" should be recorded and available fro reveiw at those crossed swords or in the hypothetical mausoleums.
It is no joke that some Romans built magnificent family mausoleums, pseudo-museums.

Good images and more detailed information on both as well as other Roman mausoleums

Well I'd love to see that, since I actually don't want to lose my Marcus the Mighty with 10 command stars and 10 influence.
I agree with you that the heroic battles should contain more information, like the unit quantity before and after the battle. Bringing up the whole recorded battle would take too much space I think. Seeing that there are lots of heroic battle sites on my campaign map
In my current game as the greeks, i now have Dionsios the Navigator. I think he was called that because his ship won against overwhelming odds. He gets a 5 star command bonus in naval battles. He was formerly Dionsios the Conquerer, mighty, coldhearted, handsome, ect. He has ten of command, management, and influence...beat part is...hes only in his late 30s!

a question i just have to ask. how is there the spartan gaurd guy and triarii, pharoahs bowmen, and horsearchers for what, the greeks? just wondering if this is a specific mod, or if you did it in your free time?

Wow that's a great general, consider yourself lucky since it's hard to get all 3 to 10. I always have 2 to 10 and 1 to 4/5 (mostly management) if I'm lucky.

He conquered all of Asia Minor, and parts of Scythia.
He had the titles the Conqueror, the Butcher, the Might, and now the Cold-hearted.
btw, does anyone know if it's possible to change the age of a living family member?

@Roy- that's one heck of a character you've got there!
@Motep- how can you not use him? Is he the only family member that you're unable to use? Or is it that your saved game did not work with the patch? If it's the latter, I also had the same problem back then. I downloaded 1.2 and it crashed my game so I had to buy BI(a good investment by itself, nevertheless) and settle only for v1.3.
Vibius dies a couple turns ago :(

My best character was Marcus 'The Butcher' Julius. He came of age with 4 command and grew up to conquer Gaul, Iberia, and Britannia before he was 50. He rested a little while in Britain after becoming faction leader. He finally met his demise, ironically through old age fighting in Germania. He was invincible in combat but not to nature. He had a core army of 2 units of hastati, 1 unit of velites and 1 unit of equites, all of 3 gold chevron quality. The rest of the army changed as time went, sometimes all mercenaries, sometimes romans. Marcus himself had 3 gold chevrons, 10 command, 10 influence, 0 management. Not a very good manager.
Anyway, you guys have had tonnes of good generals too, and sorry about Vibius.

Hes like 50 years old.
Hes defended corinth vs macedonian siege about 5-7 times now :wall:

He made the sea journey from greece to italy, was in the capital and going to rally with his legions in the cisalpine province in order to launch a new campaign of conquest in gaul and spain when he passed in his sleep. Before retiring for bed that night, he was heard to comment on the contrast between the scent of the sea on the meditarianian coast, and the smell of pine from the endless forests. He also said he would be glad to die in battle close to home. These turned out to be his last words so unfortunately he would never get his wish of a heroic death.
Vibius will laying "in state" this week for the public to pass by and pay their respects. Cannoli will be served in the blue room on tuesay after veiwing.
The great Empire of Subedei will send its high-ranked ambassadors to pay last respect to one of the greatest generals wandering earth...we were always glad he was on our side....Quote:

and went on a conquering rampage.

Dizazelmis was a cripple from birth and under normal conditions he would have been a decent governor in the Bactrian homelands. However he was not content with his lot and being a natural leader and a very persuasive individual he took advantage of circumstances and ended up reaching far greater heights than anyone else had thought possible.
He came of age just as my Parthian allies after a century of good friendship had attacked my capital. Because I had no armies even close by I scraped together what governors and mercernaries I could get and marched them over to relieve the siege. (fortunately that included some elephants). The siege was broken and Dizazelmis picked up an Easterner turncoat as an ancillary. Well he convinced me that he could lead the army of retribution against the Parthians so after a couple of years I had a full army built up and ready for him to go and sack the Parthian capital. Well what started out as a punitive expedition became a full blown invasion because Dizazelmis just could not lose, pretty much every victory he has had has been against full size stacks with very low losses for the Bactrians. He ended taking out Parthia and Pontus with almost his original army except for adding a few mercernaries because of eventual losses. On the way he destroyed 14 full stacks and has 6 historical battle markers across the map. I get a kick out of seeing the title Victor:Dizazelmis the Cripple Loser: Easterner General.
Because of his crippled state and being a hypochondriac I expected him to just fall off his horse and die during the battles. The most amazing one was a 4 stack battle while besieging the Parthian capital. The Parthians attacked to lift the siege and I was commanding the half stack reinforcement army led by my faction leader and I left Dizazelmis to be run by the AI. I was sure he would be dead because of the way the AI runs the generals. It was a tough battle that cost me the life of my leader but by the end the Parthians were overcome and to my amazement I see Dizazelmis and his 1 remaining bodyguard chase the routers off the map. He had picked up 3 chevrons from that battle. After that I knew I would take him as far as he could go and made him faction heir to replace the fallen leader.
I hope you dont mind the long post but he is definately the most compelling computer generated character I have ever had the fortune to come across. (mostly since I like rooting for the underdog I suppose)

It's very funny that a cripple General conquers the Parthians. Never expected that.

Another good general roman man#3! Just wondering though, does that mod implement loyalty in? And does it only affect te greeks and how provinces does that huge map have?

you know, to the first question, i you can see that loyalty has something to do with the greeks, but they are the only faction i have really played a campaign with, so im not sure if other factions would have loyalty, although im sure they do.Quote:

oh, and great emporer, i think that many big mods like that use the same map, be it mundus magnus or terrae expugnudae(i think thats how you spell it), but some one on a modding project like that could tell you otherwise.

I had posted the following story in a thread I created quite a while ago.
He started his military career as a mere army captain in Sardis. I had just elminated the Egyptians. I wanted to go after Parthia, but I didn't want to jeopardize my alliance with Pontus as they were allied with Parthia. That would all change however, when Pontus would betray me. I had bribed Pergamum from the Greek Cities. One turn later Pontus beseiged it with a near full stack army. I had to respond with a near full stack from Sardis. In my way, however, was a Pontic 3-star general with a 1/3 stack army. And thus a great leader was born. After that battle, I got a chance to adopt a general being he was "man of the hour." Right away he had four stars at only 19. I immediatly made him my faction heir. A couple game years later, my faction leader died. At only 21 he became faction leader. Talk about lucky! In only a couple years from mere captain to faction leader. I used his army to conquer all of Asia Minor. I then pushed into Armenia and took them, and then finished off Parthia. Their most northern city had no family members so it turned rebel.I had started making Memphis a military training center as well as Antioch. Once I started building a whole new, advanced army I decided I wanted him to lead it. And so I had to take him all the way from Arsak to Memphis. That took quite a few years. I took him to Antioch and then sent his army by boat to Memphis. Once retrained I sent him to take back Africa from the Scipii. The Scipii had a very large army in Africa. They had many full stack armies. Well, having nearly 1,000,000 denari helps out with some of them. Having a top-knotch army with reinforcements helps with the rest. And there you have it. The beginings of a superb general in a nutshell - Antigonos the Conqueror.

A few years after that screenshot was taken, he sadly died (peacefully). As you can see in the screenshot, I had taken his retinues and transfered them in anticipation of his passing. Antigonos the Conqueror was my best general I could ever have.
The story continues.
Antigonos had a son. I didn't use him to his full potential as I would have liked, though. He was in Antioch where he lived with a bunch of other generals. He was in his 30's when I finally moved him. His name was Bucoli. He eventually became faction leader. I took him with a good army to finish off the Scipii in Africa and then on to Sicily. He eventually moved on to Italy where he took Rome. By the time he took Rome, he was known as Bucoli the Honest. After that he moved on to take a few Julii cities to the North. When he died he was known as Bucoli the Conqueror. Like father like son! :yes:

wow. two great generals. and by 171 bc, four factions remain. you should go all the wat, try to take the whole map. it should be for an exciting late game. if only you had those two generals remaining.
I thought about it. I am in a position to do so. It's surprising how little the map has changed since I took those pics. I have 49 settlements (48 in the last pic). The settlement I took since that last pic was Campus Alanni. I haven't played the game since. I think it was sometime back in September. It just got boring. The Brutii are very powerful with nearly 10 half to full stack armies just standing around Vicus Venedae. When I stopped playing I was training armies at an urgent pace out of Katais and Artaxarta to get ready to take on the Brutii. Maybe someday I will start the game again. My favorite thing to do is to play a campaign at the start when there are more factions around.

Yeah, I know what you mean, "The Conqueror" , my latest one is Melchior the Harsh (BI Sassanids), faction heir 5 star on Campaign map , 10+ on the field, Always exterminates (he's my Christian killer)
You guys must use single generals more than I do. I usually have all of my generals do their part, so I never get generals THAT good.
Mine was '' Nero Varus''. He's a 5 star general at the moment and has whipped out 3 factions. He started out as a early legionary cohort captin. I had him attack the egyption pharroh and then I adopted him. Since then he has been whipping out eastern factions.
I've had the victor, the butcher, etc. And now I have this one Sextus The Lewd as my current faction leader. Despite the name he's quite a good general, having just conquered the Italian peninsula.

I rarely have truely skilled generals from actual combat experience.I only use the general units if I think it will turn the tide of the battle.I like having generals to govern.My one general is really good.While he hasnt done any real fighting (chasing guys down) hes lead enough armies to victories so hes pretty awesome.

Well I'm about 30 years into my first campaign as the Julii. My first leader is still alive and, well, he rocks. He has a 10 star command ranking and damn good traits. I want to get a picture made before he falls of his perch (75 years old and still kicking :2thumbsup:). How'd I take an in game shot? Print Screen button?
Yes, his print screen, then open paint and paste.
This is my ten star command and influence faction leader. What a guy, there is nobody in my faction worthy of replacing him. They're all drunkards. Notice how I've stripped most of his retinue due to his old age; if it was still attached, he may have 10 in each area!

either you press print screen and paste the image into paint or whateer program you have, or you can simply press print screen; a tga file will be created in your RomeTW folder, then you can convert the images from tga's to jpeg's using photoshop.
If you don't have photoshop, maybe Zamzar converter should work, though I didn't give it a try.

When you take a screen, it is stored in a folder called Tgas in your RTW directory.
