A mini guide:"How to become a member"
You surely are a new orgah here. You want to post in some forums, but you get the following response:
Dear member, you dont have the permission to post in this place.
Its because you are a junior member. Why?
This site, the tw.org community, have protection about spammers. They can't spam everywhere. This allows mods to keep trace of where are the spammers and delete their accounts to keep this place free of spam. So this is the main reason why you are not a member...yet.
Ok, I know. You dont spam. Why I still am a junior member? and, What Can I do for being a member?
1 of 4 options:
1)You are very inactive. Be active. When you are active the moderators will see you are active and they will promote you to member. But remember: Post count doesn't matter, post quality does. There are junior members with 150 posts, but members with 25.
2)You didnt follow the rules. When you joined the org, you agreed to be a nice person and you must follow the rules. If you dont, that will make you a junior member forever.
3)Post in the HAIL New Members(Introduction) IV Thread! Then, the staff can see you and they will promote you. Because the moderating team is composed by humans. Humans makes mistakes.
4)If you have been active for a long period of time (3 weeks and more time) and you followed the rules, contact TosaInu. (Click in the link to send a Private Message to him, he will reply as fast as he can, as I told you before, even TosaInu is human, he have a life and he doesn't live only for this forum)
Then... Isn't it still clear? Mithrandir will explain something said in this post:

Be friendly. We are a growing community, every day, new members are here to say: "Hey, camels sucks!", "I love modding", "Thank you for the guides". Everyone come here for his two cents. Your presence is worthy here. Make sure you are friendly, and you will be one member.
Dont post if you are going to say something that can hurt someone. Remember, there are a lot of ways to saying things.
DONT SPAM. SPAM is everywhere. We know it, who doesn't post spam? Spam is punished if its being used in a lot of posts. Please make sure you don't come here to "increase +1 your postcount".
Follow the rules. The rules are easy to follow. If you don't, you won't be promoted in a long time.
Well, hope this helps to our new residents in the totalwar.org house!

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Hmm...I thought this was already explained many times, including in sticky post? :dizzy2:
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
And still many Junior members always ask why they can't post everywhere and when they will become a Member...
It's very kind of Caius to try as hard as he can to help our Junior Members. His effort is the act of a true Orgah. Therefore : a respectful nod to Caius, who's pleasure seems to be to serve

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Updated to add a couple of things i missed.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Sadly, a great many new members sign up without reading the sickies and what not and are shocked to find out its a little more complicated than they first thought.
Alot of times you can come in here and find threads asking why they can't post in a specific spot or what not.
I too commend Cassius for trying to help our Junior Members get to become Members.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
I also, as a junior member, appreciate Caius's efforts. You learn to read most if not all stickies as you gain more experiances on forums.

I am positive that you can bribe Mithrandir with Camels, probably Martok as well ~;)

Just ste... I mean "borrow" them from the stables, and when they send out search parties you can pretend you found them, and return them!
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Tragically, some might be lost forever, unless they are found somewhere compromising for some people...
Back on topic, I too thank Caius for his guide.
Unfortunately, it will most likely be useless to those who:
a) don't have any care for the rules and
b) have a shed of common sense.

All camel-related donations are accepted here, except for the lovely spit and dung, of course -- my team of stablehands has enough of that already, thank you. ~D

Probably not a bad idea, but the problem with that is that we've got several stickied topics already, and we don't want to clutter up the Entrance Hall with stickies more than we can help. Perhaps merge it with one of the existing stickies (such as this one, maybe)? Either way, I'd recommend PM-ing BKS or Mithrandir and see what they can do. And speaking of the latter....

He apparently had a bit of a mishap when using the change name function. Don't worry; he's still around.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Oh.That is good
PM'ed BKS.Waiting for his answer.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Whilst I appreciate your work Caius, I believe everything in this thread is laid out in the Guild FAQ thread, and thus stickying it would be somewhat redundant.

I'm against it.
In my experience, the stickies are rarely read, especially by new members.
Having this floating around the forum will attract more attention.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Well guys, we can always virtually sticky it by posting in it whenever it gets to the bottom of the page. The bad side of that is that it could become known as spam and get closed.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Or you could self sticky.
~Press thread tools
~Click stick this thread to the top
That way you can track it.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
two things:
1) A small minority of junior members never seem to have come on the org once since registering...surely the admin could implement sum inactivity account deletions (not active for 3 months)
2) This thread deserves to be stickied, and included in the FAQ
3) (i cannot count) Junior members who moan consistently about not being able to post anywhere should just wait like the rest of us have ( i am being hypocritical though cos i am fairly sure i moaned about not being able to post anywhere else once, but i have learned the error of my ways, partly due to this thread, Bravo Caius!!:2thumbsup: We are not worthy
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
To mention one other thing (credit to mightilyoats for helpfully - if unwittingly - reminding me)....
To all junior members: On rare occasions, someone does accidentally get missed for promotion to full membership. (Hey, we're not perfect; it happens!) If you feel you're one of those people, you can PM TosaInu and he should be able to take care of it. Before you do, however, make sure you ask yourself the following questions:
"Have I been behaving msyelf and obeying the Org's forum rules?"
"Have I been posting fairly regularly?"
"Has it been at least a month since I joined?"
Just make sure you can answer "yes" to all of these questions before you contact our benevolent overlord about being promoted to full member.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Alternatively you could offer to be his official chin scratcher. It's not a great job, but it's how I earned my promotion. Next step up the Org ladder is to be a shoe-shiner which pays only marginally better, then there's back-scratcher *shudder*, before you go on to earn your full independence from the Org overlords.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Thanks Caius!
I appreciate the explanation.
However, as stated by professorspatula, I'm not really into that official chin scratching thing. :eyebrows: But I will 'tap the keg for you'. :barrel:

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Good job, Caius, however, I bemoan the idea that people are having trouble becoming members. If you're going to join the org, you should figure on being at least somewhat active. Also, its not hard to have some manners on line, I think its pretty cowardly to make fun of people when you most likely will never see them face to face. I had no trouble at all becoming a member, it didn't ever really become an issue for me, anyway.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Hi greaterkhaan,
Sadly people do have trouble becoming members. Before this constructive thread was written there had been several questions about the matter even though it had been written in the FAQ. Although it may be obvious to most, a small collection of members don't understand what they have to do and are not especially, let's say, civil to other members, this thread aims to help them out and encourage them to post more freindly posts to their fellow Org members so that they can reap the reward at the end. Hope this helps you, cheers!
BTW, it didn't effect me either - I joined on the morning of 12th of January at 8:50AM and I was a full member when I woke up the following morning (13th of January) 6:30AM. Although I sort of cheated - I joined a mafia game!
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
it is frustrating when u cannot post in other thread topics, such as myself i had the problem and could only reply in the mtw/vi threads:surrender:
sometimes you can get overlooked as the moderators are busy, and so i got in touch with TosInu, and the good sir made me a member  :turkey:

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
As a new member I have to say this should not be stickied. I will be honest and admit I barely skimmed through the stickies before I started posting. And Omanes how did you join a mafia game as a junior member??? I had to wait till I was promoted to full member till I could play.

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
You mean the custom user title? What shows up for me as "Just your average", right? Well, I think you can change that whenever you want, by going in your User Control Panel, then by going in "Profile". There, after scrolling down a bit, you should find the "Custom User Title" section. Fill that out, and that's that.

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
I still don't quite get it, are promotions carried out when the member reaches a certain number of post counts or do the staff manually promote him?
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
.
Manually. Post count doesn't count, post quality does. ~;)
.

Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Shogun,
You need to wait. Sometimes, you are not long enough to deserve the promotion.
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Really though what does being a member really matter. I mean, why the fuss to have one word cut out of your current status??
-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
Edit button dam***! 6 days left though...
and Tavern of course..

Its not really the title - its more the privileges which make it worthwhile.
With the promotion a user has a lower compulsory time in between posting (from five minutes to twenty seconds) and also gains access to the edit function in all forums (previously only holding it in the Hosted Mod forums).
In addition the user can also post in the The Arena, The Hard- and Software forum, the Monastery and Chapter House, the Frontroom and the Gameroom. The Backroom can also be posted in, although this requires applying for permission through the UserCP.
Also gained, although not so important, is the ability to change your user name every sixty days, and to create your own custom user title (the text above your avatar). The size of the user's PM box is also increased (from 20 to 100).
Senior Membership, although not quite as perk filled, grants the user a larger PM box (100 to 225 PMs) and the ability to change their user name every thirty days. The user status is more important here though - hopefully other users hold Senior Members in higher regard when they post.
~:)

Indeed. The bestowing of Senior Member on someone is mostly just an honorific, with the added benefit that any SM's will get free beer if they visit KukriKhan at his house. ~;)

-
Re: A mini guide:"How to become a member"
It only took me about a week or so of active posting to become a member (I was registered a long time but didn't post). I think the key is to post contributive posts to the subject, rather than spam posts for a higher postcount, because in fact postcount has nothing to do with it. As long as you are making intelligent posts that encourage discussion, you will become a member in a short time. So your answer is no, it doesn't.

I am a testament to this account. I became a member after only 9 posts. I didn't spam. I followed all rules. But most of all, the initial posts I made were very (for a newb) comprehensive and always aimed to give the reader something valuable to learn.
Here's the equation:7teacher: :
Quality posts=Membership

There is not really much to post about in the Entrance Hall though, I wish that I would be made a member. :P

Actually, most parts of the forum are open to junior members, not just the Entrance Hall. The Miscellaneous section is about the only area that requires full membership -- otherwise, you're free to post everywhere else.
