The Australian National Anthem. A contraversial topic.
Some say it is out of date, and not true to today's Australia.
The Current Anthem
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
No one knows the second verse.
What does girt mean anyway :laugh4:
:gah: On the Anthem!
Other solutions include:
Tie me kangaroo down, sport
I still call Australia home (crap IMO)
Down Under
and of course: Waltzing Matilda
Lyrics for Down Under:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
Buying bread from a man in brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, do you speak-a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
Lying in a den in bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?
And he said,
Oh! do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
It's a great song, I reckon it should be the Australian National Anthem. If nothing else, we will sound cool while singing it! :laugh4:

@the anthem - it's ****. Probably teh worst in the world imo - there's no real meaning in it whatsoever.
@what girt means - in that context it means 'surrounded'
@the options - all rubbish too :laugh4:
There was a mention in the paper about Vandstone writing a replacement in her spare time - if you can did up the lyrics of that im' sure it woudl be worth a laugh :)

Ahhh Chaser's War, I got half the show on DVD, need to find the others.
I have no problem with our current national anthem, but that is because I don't see it as all that important. Who needs it? That said, if it changed, I want absolutely no reference to Vegemite, stereotypes, or Britain.

America has queens from a lot of countries, particularly in San Francisco, but only a few have anthems they sing and none are appropriate for Australian sporting occasions.

Personally.. We? Something of a contradiction there, old boy. I can appreciate the point though. Australia isn't part of the UK, and hasn't been for some time. Though I think calling for the severance of all ties is unnecessary. Denial of one's heritage is an unhealthy road to tread. Republicanism on the other hand is all fair enough. 1. Britain and England are two very seperate things, they are not interchangable, thats an American mistake.
2. She's no more our Queen that yours, she's German, 100% continental, 0% British, or near enough. We have her because:
A: It makes the Americans jealous.
B: Republics suck pretty badly, look at France or America.
C: Presidents are expensive, the Queen is cheap by comparison.

The only reason the vote failed was that it was worded (i'll get on to that * howard later :laugh4: ) so that it was so restrictive that it couldnt' but fail (simply, we voted on whether aus. should become a republic following x rules, not whether we should become a republic full stop). Who would make a better Prime Minister; Beazly or Adolf Hitler

Who would make a better Prime Minister; Beazly or a plank of wood
Answer: The plank of wood gets walked over a bit, but beazly has a lot of practice
Who would make a better Prime Minister; Beazly or a dog turd
Answer: They pretty much filled with the same stuff.
But the fact remains, we have no choice of who to have in government....its sad.

Again, not English for 941 years. This would also be a break with Britain in general. Do you really hate us that much? Because this is ultimately what it comes down to. The Queen is symbolic of a shared identity, do the Australians no longer wish to play rugby or cricket, drink tea, drive on the left and have all the letters in their words?

I dunno. The Star Spangled Banner (or whatever it is) is pretty boring. It's like, they just choose a random singer and he/she then howls like Celine Dion. Celine Dion from a drinking song; that's rather dysfunctional.

In view of the recidivist tendacies of our Aussie cousins....
The best anthems were either Welsh pub songs, or songs by Welshmen. I think a slightly re-worded Tom Jones song might do the trick:
"My, my my Aus-tral-ya
Why, why why Aus-tral-ya
So
before
the Englishmen break down the door,
Believe me Australia, we just couldn't take anymore"

Well, after stealing the whole country from you, what are a few musical notes between friends? :laugh4:
Anyway, the discussion was about Australia's quest for its musical identity. We are deviating from this noteworthy search.
But we're not friends. America still wants to overthrow the monarchy and if we could find enough soldiers we'd invade again.:beam:
I'm sure no one would mind if Australia just adopted our Monarch's Anthem, it's not really specific to these shores. You just need to change the Scots to Kiwi's and you're done.
Speaking of which, isn't it about time we actually had a national anthem?

Re: Australian National Anthem
We Kiwis thought about invading Aussie but when we checked it out we had enough sand :laugh4:
But on the theme of national anthems then our one (God Defend New Zealand) - or as the Aussies hear it "Gid difind noo zilind" has the great line
"Guard Pacifics triple Star"
Ummm not sure about that.
1. There are four stars on our flag (as compared to Aussie's 6)
2. If they are talking about NZ as a hotel then it would probably be a four to five star :laugh4:

Wiki states the following:

Bracken’s national anthem asks god to "guard Pacific’s triple star" and some historians have reasoned that refers to Te Kooti's flag and is his oblique support for Māori. It has also been suggested that "Pacific’s triple star" simply means the three main islands of New Zealand -- Northern, Middle and Stewart as they were referred to at that time. Bracken never explained what he meant, so there is no definitive clarification today.
