I can't believe how frustrating these guys are. There's one bumping off family members one after the other. I try to keep my armies away from him but he's right in the middle of the action. If I leave an army anywhere near him he wanders over and bumps off the general. A family member. He does this time and time again.

One of the problems I'm having is non of my characters have any piety. Not even the priests. Why is that? And why do I have such poor standing with the pope when I do everything he says?

Patch 1.1 should have reduced them a bit. If you don't have the patch, install it as it fixes a couple things in the original game.

stay in perfect relations with the pope through money gifts and obeying his commands and inquisator attacks drop to almost zero.

I've found that building the churches or training priests in a city increases the governors piety - as long as he is there when it completes.

A patch 1.1 inquisitor fried my faction leader yesterday. Tweaked down, right... The king (HRE) wasn't a great character, anyway, nobody missed him anyway :laugh4:

I've never had a problem with inquisitors. In fact I've had guys found innocent at trial before. 1 priest per province and always having the church building maxed is the best policy.

I've had plenty of inquisitor attacks with perfect relations with the Pope. It's particularly bad if you take over a territory that had them already. They even post-patch don't seem to be able to differentiate between the godless heathens you just killed and your papal favorites.

I'm with Sabutai, I used to get nailed by inquisitors on a regular basis. But since I started keeping the Pope in my back pocket via regular donations, I very rarely see the nasty little fellas (in my own territory anyway).

Those roving "god squads" that people suggest using are really what save my butt. Usually I can expand in a manner that distances myself from Pope territories so even if I capture something that's really low catholicism, the "god squad" can jack that up to the 80's or 90's in a turn or two, and my box of 8 can take care of any stray inquisitors.

all i know is thats its nice to play the papacy.and get to use those infamous inquisators. the success of an inquisator is also based the level of catholic support in a province.

Probably not since I have had a 5 piety king killed next to Granada when it had 20% catholic pop against a 4 piety inquisitor and a 3 piety general survive a 8 piety inquisitor next to Milan which was 98% catholic pop

Inquisitors appear because of high heresy, so use max priests to get this down asap. No heresy generally == no inquisitors though occasionally they can bleed from neighboring provinces.

The trouble is that they tend to just rampage once they've completed any mission they showed up to do. They just start going after whoever's nearby once the valid target is dealt with. That's what gets me.

I've been neglecting the religious side of the game so far (this is my first campaign) and I have very bad relations with the pope, but I don't really understand that because I always do what I'm told. I didn't know about making donations to them, that's a good tip. Is there anything else I can do?

Yeah, its not always being on good standing that helps because sometimes, you have neighbors that invite them over being heathens. I think the best option for you is just take a few turns out of your busy lifestyle in the game and build as many churches or upgraded churches as you can. That seems to work for me but I am almost always left alone because I care about Religion from turn one, designate just one territory for Priest training and I send them out to the Russians or Moors, ONE A TURN - EVERYTURN. Eventually you get the Theology Guild - DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTHER GUILD IN THAT FACTION AND IF YOU HAVE ONE DESTROY IT. Eventually you will get lots of Cardinals and then become pope. For me this just works and is worth the effort. I don't know about this game but in MTW the church increases Moral and other traits that you need to squash Squalor and other unrest. It pays to have a church everywhere.

Thanks again. I don't really want to fiddle with the game files. I think the developers should fix this. That's what I meant when I said they're joking... I meant the devs. If they're reading this, you seriously screwed this up in my opinion. Here's why... despite the fact that inquisitors can wipe out your entire family (I'd guess I've lost eight at least so far) they can also attack character who are OUT AT SEE IN BOATS, and for the most part IGNORE HERETICS. Now, explain why an inquisitor would go around killing preists and totally ignore heretics. Or if they do occasionally try one, he gets off. That's right... my priests are found guilty, and heretics get off.

Um, I think your game is the same as everybody else's game, and you're probably just not noticing the bugs.

I think the box 8 trick is the best answer for your current inquisitor problems. Building churches & priests, and keeping good papal relations is the best answer for the long term problem.

it's pretty much ALWAYS because the pope doesn't like you - once you start fire a diplomat/princess his way for trade rights, alliance, map info exchange then keep someone down there. This is helpful in any way because you have quick access to: Venice, Sicily, Milan, Pope. and not far from France and HRE.
