What American Accent Do You Have?
Nice little quiz I found, should be amusing for the American Orgahs. And come to think of it, might be a good way for the English as a 2nd language Orgahs to find out which accent they're using ...
Test.
It says the lemur has a "midlands" accent, which makes sense, since most people say I have no discernible accent at all.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I have a Northeastern accent, which probably makes sense. Although I imagine I don't sound like someone from the North-eastern US in the slightest, it seems like one of the ones relatively close to a British accent.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Mid Atlantic
Also known as a "Philadelphia accent" but also heard in south Jersey, Baltimore, and thereabouts.
Makes sense.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Minnesota Accent
Makes Sense.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I, too have the Midlands accent. Althogh, its a general combo of suthern', western, and the midwest. Im a mess...

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
For some reason the link wont work for me. However being from New York of course I have no accent :laugh4: As anyone who has heard me on TS or vent can attest to.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Midland.
In real life, though, some people say I have, of all things, Irish accents, and others just say I have my own incomprehensibleugh accent. I don't buy the Irish one because I think that's just a British slip especially considering I've never been to Ireland my whole life. :dizzy2:
I ain't dat Yankee, right bro?
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Northern which makes sense since I grew up in Wisconsin.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
northeastern, to be expected, at least not too jersey-ish.

Hella. Can anyone pin point where this word originated from :juggle2:

[No Welsh accent, then?]
My result was Midland. Was finding it difficult to immitate some of the
pronunciations. My American accents just aren't up to scratch anymore.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Ha I took it once and got midland. Which is probably good for me as my accent only slips on a few words:laugh4:

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?

Oh no wait...
Well I took it and I came up as Northeasten.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I got a north central accent just as I suspected. It's funny I've been in the Marine Corps for two years now and when I first got in people made fun of my Wisconsin accent, now whenever I call home my family tells me I have a California accent.

Probably due to simular reasons, the English you learn in school is British English and then you have that Swedish accent thingy, that might be close to Northeastern for some reason.
And source and sauce does have the same vovel pronounciation. :beam:

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
It says:

But in reality I don't have an American accent, I have an English one. But I guess if there's any American accent that's mostly the same I gues it'd be this one.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
My Dutch-German accent seems to sound most like a Northeastern accent
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I apparently have a Midlands accent which suprised me until I read that it's a fairly neutral accent that many people outside of the region have.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I got...
Northern. Chicago sort of area mine said. Though my said I sounded like a Buffalo... hm?

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Thank god, Midland. Grew up in central Indiana, but have been living in North Carolina for about 6 years now. There's enough dislocated yanks like me in Raleigh though that I'm not around people enough to pick up an accent (which I've conciously attempted NOT to), and honestly not too many natives down here that have one have it really thick. My wife on the other hand... :dizzy2: Normally she's not bad, but when she's around a few of her deep south "southern belle" friends she tends tew start tawkin lahk theis.
Edit - What makes that even funnier w/my wife is that she is from the Chicago area and up until we moved here had a pretty thick Chicago accent as well. My mother in law and I always get a huge kick out of that.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
All us foreigners seem to end up with a Northern / Northeastern accent. It does make sense, as that is pretty much considered a standard pronounciation. And closest to British English.
In reality though, I don't sound anything like a native speaker at all. It's comprehensible, but with a thick foreign accent. I write English much better than I can speak it.

Re: original subject. I sound like a northeasterner.
It's interesting that you should bring that up. Now and again I say something which is picked up on by a resident tyke and they say to me, "Thas not from 'round these parts are thee lad?"
Then if I go to Manchester and I say summat they say "Yous not from these parts are you bud?"
My English accent is a mess really. Bit Yorky, bit Manc, bit Lancastrian. Though all the kids talk like Yorkshiremen, because they all are, they don't seem to notice my accent at all. Having said that, the ex-wife still talks like Jane Horrocks, she must practise every day in front of the mirror. :laugh4:

----------------------------
Expected, having grown up in Detroit, though I thought I'd adopted some Southern and Western influences in my travels. Not enough, I guess.
Mrs. Kukri says I have a chameleon accent, because when I talk with an English-as-Second-Language foreigner, after a few minutes, I adopt their accent, during the conversation, whether spanish, arabic, german, tagalog, whatever, LoL.
Funny that the Euro's here come up "Northern".

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I took the quiz twice. First is the way I normally talk when I'm calmly discussing things at work or hanging out with friends. Midlands.
Then I took it the way I do when I agitated, I'm over tired, I'm drunk or I'm around my family. Northeastern, basically allowing the 'inner me' to come out.
This makes perfect sense. I lived right outside Boston till I was 7. When we moved to Connecticut, I got teased relentlessly for the way I talked, so I developed a more neutral accent (Connecticut tends to be more New York than Northeastern). My wife says I don't even have to raise my voice for speak more quickly, just having that accent creep in sends warning signals off for her. Funny thing is, I'm never aware of it when I'm doing it.

For some reason I don't have a Welsh accent in the slightest. I've always been somewhat puzzled by it, as I've lived in Wales all of my life and my dad's from Pontypridd, but there you go.
I sound generically British more than anything else, really.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Here is my result (as English is not my first language):
But most people would probably -- when they hear me -- think it's all a mix of everything. Some have said it's a lot New-Yorkish, but "Midland" is probably correct. I occasionally imitate the accent of Southern folks for fun or apply heavy use of "ain't" with a "New-Yorkish" touch when speaking casually.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
As a guy from the Isle of Man I managed to get a Northern accent. yay! My mom is from Chicago and my dad has a Northern accent and those are the only places I've been in the USA.
Did you get this from here by any chance? I just thought it was a weird coincidence.

I've a slightly pseudo Brit-upper-class accent normally.

Neutral midland for me. I wonder how many different results they have and what all the options are. Southern Utah certainly has its own accent (which my family never really picked up).

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I got a midland, which is pretty much what I expected to get, considering I'm basically right on the border of those areas.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Well it said I have a Midland accent, somewhat to my surprise (I'm a Minnesotan born and raised). Most people tell me I have enough of a Minnesota accent to be noticable, but not so much that it causes them to snicker behind my back. ~D

Midland, but I'm asian!! It does make some sense though.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I imagine my American accent would be that of an Armenian Ex-pat turned American citizen. It seems my English resembles a 'midlands' accent.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Northerner. Could be because of phonetics, way more studied when not talking one's mothertongue?
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Midland, though I expected to be some kind of Kentucky Kid, because I often find myself talking like that.
-
Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Northeastern, apparently... Despite never having been anywhere near there.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I got Midland. It got called "lowest-common-denominator American accent" O_o
I'm from the Philippines by the way, but don't really have the philippine accent. I guess "Midland" is "no accent"/"american dictionary accent".

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
Heh heh: there have been some people who thought me American due to my accent (almost) totally concealing my being Dutch. Add the fact I don't look Dutch either. And add the fact I easily fool people with stories for fun (and you should see the reactions on their faces). Why, if properly trained I would make one hell of a spy.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
This is what I got:
What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West
Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.
I remember taking this quiz before and getting midlander which is interesting. I had to take the quiz from another site though because the link wouldn't work.

I'm from southern utah as well and I agree that it has it's own accent. I once had a substitute teacher from canada that told us our accent was horrible. According to her we grunt the endings of some words, the most noticable being the word mountain.

Re: What American Accent Do You Have?
I seemd to have a 'midlands' accent. Not too surprising though, my dad is from Wisconsin but lacks that accent completely and my mom is Austrian and speaks a 'standard' english.
