Seems like the 360 is a stinker.

Also had a ring of death, xbox360 has severe hardware reliability issues. Well that was already known, but I didn't realise it was this bad. To make it worse, it only uses one core now and it overheats, wait untill the more demanding games come, thing is a timebomb. Thinking of selling my 360 and getting a ps3 instead.

Swap one very crummy plastic box for a slightly less crummy one?
Silly boy.
Buy a Wii.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Already got a Wii, probably the main reason my 360 still works, hardy play on the noisy pos, currently collecting dust on the shelve :beam:

Why not send your noisy pos my way? I'd be more than happy to play it until it explodes, nevermind burn out.
I have to say, out of the big 3, Wii seems to have come off best. With the exception of people accidentally throwing the 'Wiimote' at TV's, there don't seem to be any problems with it. It's cheap, reliable and good fun.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I've read about PS3 failures too.
-
Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
PS3 has a faillure rate of 1 on 30, the 360 1 on 4(!), Wii 1 on 100. A console with such terrible hardware issues should never have been released, and Microsoft keeps insisting that problems are caused by users. The thing heats up, and there is nothing currently here that is even close to testing the raw power of the 360. Powerful it is for sure. Gears of War, currently the best looking title uses only 1 of the 3 processors, and already it crumbles under it's weight.

From what I've heard the 360's failure rate has gone down. M$ has been tweaking the production process to get it down. That said the PS2 also had a large failure rate. The thing just needs lots of ventilation. If you treat it like a PC you should be fine.

Fixed. :tongueg: 600 dollars for a Blu-Ray player with only one great game? Sounds like the CD-i all over again.
There are great games for the 360. Gears of War is one of them. Seems like the only thing the Wii is good for is producing games that are tech demos for the wiimote or party games. While fun for awhile, they soon lose their novelty.
I sold my Wii for a 360, and I couldn't be happier. And my 360 has yet to malfunction.

Took them long enough to release good games on it, now it indeed has a great library. Takes some time, same with the Wii, the killer games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 (and hopefully Manhunt 2) have yet to appear, now we have mostly poor ports from ps2 titles. Wii will have impressive graphics and the wiimote will advance gaming

Sv: Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Well I just ordered a 360 and hopefully should have it in a few days.
Most people that I have talked to that have it aren't having any issues with it.

I make the DS comparison. That is, when it first came out, most games were glorified tech demos for the touch screen. I don't remember how long it took anymore, but it was quite awhile before any truly great games came out for the system. Now, the DS has a solid library of really good games.
I had hoped Nintendo would learn from the DS launch and improve things for the Wii launch. And in a way, they have- there's at least a handful of must-haves for the Wii available now, but the real blockbusters are yet to come. They will come though, the huge numbers of consoles the Wii is selling alone is enough to dictate that it will get good games.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I want: Blue Dragon, Viva Pianta, Prince of Persia Classic, Castlevania, and maybe Band of Bugs if it's as amusing as it sounds.
I don't want: The sound of a jet plane and red lights as soon as the warranty expires.
Redesign the thing so it's quiet and functional and I'll probably hop for it at some point. Otherwise, no way.
The breakage issue is made worse by M$ trampling all over EU and UK consumer rights, and forcing people to pay £80 to have their defective consoles repaired. When talking of expensive games consoles the "reasonable period of time" quoted in the law is years, not a single year. Furthermore the problem with the consoles strongly appears to be the shoddy construction and cheap materials they are made from, making M$ doubly liable.
-
Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
And even then they could not build them fast enough to meet demand...
I have had mine for 18 months so I guess it is due to die at any moment...
Hmmm, might be a good time to trade it in for one of the new black elite versions...
@frogbeastegg I got the Prince of Persia classic. It is great fun, but odd to play with a controller rather than the keyboard... the fencing is just as I remember...

Apparently the newer 360s have a seperate heat sink, so they should be safer.
I just got a ps2 this year, cheap console and lots of cheap but good games, the way console gaming should be :laugh4:

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
To further support my earlier assertion: Report: Japanese publishers switching over to Wii
Quote:
According to a report from Variety Asia, Japan's top three third-party publishers are ramping up development for Nintendo's Wii and DS systems, at the expense of rivals Sony and Microsoft. Namco Bandai will reportedly increase Nintendo hardware development by 109 percent to 115 titles, Sega will up its titles by 96 percent to 49, and Capcom titles will rise by 5 percent to 20.
The sheer number of consoles selling along with cheaper development costs are making the Wii an attractive choice for developers.
Additionally, starting next year, Nintendo is going to allow original download-able games to be sold via the Wii Shop.

Manhunt 2 has been indefinitely shelved due to their AO rating. If (a big if) it will come out with an M rating, it certainly wont be this year.

Wasn't the reasoning that Nintendo doesn't want a game on their console that's rated AO? In that case they'd forbid it worldwide I guess.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Being the clever cookie that I am, I bought a little cooling station from ASDA when I got my Xbox 360. I think its a "Madcatz" product and it costs 20 pounds. Basically the 360 stands vertically on it, the cooling station plugs into the USB and you switch on the fan and it keeps it cooler. That said, it doesn't reduce noise and the 360 still heats. I've never had any problems with the 360 and I've had it 6 months now and I play it a lot.
One reason I decided to get a 360 instead of a PS3 was that my PS2 and 4 or 5 of my friends PS2's broke down at around the same time (around 6 months after getting it) and that includes my little brothers. After we got it fixed it never broke again though.
On a slightly different note, have any of your PC's overheated?

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Got a Wii last week - really impressed - To me the great attraction is its appeal to people who don't normaly play video games. My son and I play a lot - me on the PC, him on the PC, PS2 and gameboy. My wife used to look on with disdain and wondered what the attraction was. But one look at the Wii and she was hooked - it was her idea to buy it for our son and now all 3 of us play together in the living room and we are talking about getting it hooked up to the internet etc, etc. I think its broad family appeal, especially the attraction of a group of you playing puts the Wii head and shoulders above the others. I am not a graphics junkie - to me the attraction is the game itself - that's why I am still playing MTW - so the game experience of the Wii is the winner for me.

Once, years ago when the Pentium II was current. It overheated repeatly because the [nastiest words you know] who fitted the processor didn't put a heatsink or fan on it. He also stuck in a celeron instead of my nice Pentium II.
Other than that incident, no. I always make sure my electronics are well ventilated and keep a close eye on them during hot summer days. Generally speaking I start to suffer from the heat before they do, so they get turned off to kill the extra heat they pump out.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I haven't heard anything about reliability problems recently in the states. Maybe it has been fixed... maybe Mr. Gates used his Ninjas to kill all those who dared question his [edit] ... [edit].
Ahem... now that I'm back from [edit] ... [edit].
Back again.
Anyway, I was very unimpressed with it to begin with. Looking back at the start of the PS2, I'm sure I would have thought the same (but all I played was my N64). However, with Obilivion already out (not my style, but by all accounts a great game), some lame FPS, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, BioShock, DMC 4, RE5, XBLA and ... that other Mistwalker game coming, I'm sure to buy one once I return to civilization (e.g. the USA).
To me, the big flop is the PS3. One decent game (wow! another shooter! It's not like we don't already have thousands of them to play!) and it costs more than a camel. Sony should start over again. (Then there is the PSP... blech.)

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
PSP is a terrific handheld, shame you can't really use it as a handheld because of the battery's. But unlike the popular misconception the PSP has loads of great games. It's a portable ps2, awesome. It has a great screen, and fantastic sound. If you want only one handheld go for the DS, but the PSP sure ain't a stinker.

It a relief to know my PC is not the only one. I've had non-stop problems with my computer, which is about 2.5 - 3 years old now. The first year it must have broke down 4 times with 4 new fans being put in, then 4 new disk drives, twice because the lazer buggered up and twice because the heat cracked a disk and it exploded inside the drive, and you can guess what disk it was, thats right, Rome:Total war then Rome:Total War Eras both RIP so Im now on my third RomeTW.
Basically the computer cloggs with dust which heats it up and breaks the fan, which gets as loud as a hoover (or vacuum cleaner) because it works so hard to keep it cool. Only after 4 new fans did someone notice the switch which makes the fan 'work better' when the drives heat up was off.
So anyway now we clean it every 3-4 weeks whenever it starts to get loud.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.

Microsoft is taking a $1bn hit to fix Xbox 360s, conceding residual hardware faults in its games console are causing users frustration and an "unacceptable number of repairs."
The software giant said Thursday it's extending the Xbox 360's current one-year warranty to three years from date of purchase to cover a hardware crash that generates a trio of red warning lights, branded "the red ring of death." Microsoft is also reimbursing customers who've previously paid for repairs.

Not as good as a more reliable console, but better than a kick to the teeth, which was what IMO Microsoft was offering before.

I second this. Except for Resistance: Fall Of Man and Virtua Fighter 5, there are no great (or even remotely good) games for the 600 dollar Blu-Ray player. Hopefully the upcoming releases such as Lair will change that.

Metal Gear Solid leaving the PS3 ? That would leave FF as the sole exclusive 'sure big thing' franchise wouldn't it ? Ouch.
-
Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Seeing as how bad the PS3 is, and how little it sold, I wouldn't blame Kojima to find more profitable ventures for their Metal Gear franchise. There are a LOT more 300 dollar 360s out in consumer homes than there are 500-600 dollar PS3s. Sadly, if MGS4 was PS3's launch title along with Resistance, we would be seeing a lot more of the Black Doorstops in peoples' homes.

Not worried about the PS3, it has few games but in a year or two the 360 is a poor man's pc and the PS3 a real console. Going to wait for the price to drop, PS3 gets almost every game that's released on the 360 and has a few exclusives of it's own, and it's a much better looking machine, and most importantly it's silent and it stays cool. 360 is such an ugly machine, need some looks next to my way to awesome beovision.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Newsweek has the best line of the week on the Xbox reliability issue:
It took Microsoft months to acknowledge the scope of the problem, long after afflicted Xbox 360 owners were already complaining loudly, attempting to identify the issue, and desperately inventing homegrown remedies. So to finally have Microsoft admit that, yes, there is a problem, is much like a wife who's found lipstick on her husband's collar; strange numbers in his mobile phone; and unspecified charges on his credit card. When he finally admits that, yes, he has been cheating, she's going to feel relieved that, thank god, she isn't crazy. But to simply have that acknowledged, accompanied by a bouquet of flowers, some chocolates and a promise never to stray again, is unlikely to restore said wife's trust. Microsoft needs to issue a full and frank accounting of what took place rather than the modified limited hangout wrapped in an extravagant display of remorse that we've seen thus far.
-
Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
First decent details on the revised 360 with the 65nm chip. Fingers crossed this will address the problems with the console in a more lasting form than an endless stream of free repairs.
MGS going multiplatform doesn't surprise me. MGS2 had an xbox version. These are blockbuster titles which cost a fortune to make; the wider the potential audience the more chance of making the money back. The PS2 might have the user base to support titles like MGS3 as exclusives; the PS3 is no where near close to it. MGS4 will cost more to make than the earlier games, too.
I'm rather counting on most games going multiplatform. Then if Sony continue to insult European gamers I can buy the (fingers crossed) cooler, quieter and more reliable revised 360 instead. Alternatively Microsoft don’t do enough to make the 360 appeal to me and Sony pull their head out of their unmentionables, meaning I buy the sanely re-priced PS3 when it has a stack of good games.
IMO the PS2 is the console right now. It's the one with the games, it's affordable, it's widely supported, it still has many new titles coming out. The hardware is mature, meaning it's reliable. Developers are now very familiar with it, and are still turning out stunning results. You don't need to buy a HD TV to get the best results out of it. System updates? Non-existent and not needed. It has the games too; that being the most important point it deserves to be said twice. There’s something for everyone on the PS2, and it’s very easy to build up a great collection.

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I have an Xbox 360, my brother still has his PS2. We both play Call of Duty 3, Pro Evolution 6 and Spiderman 3 on our respective consoles. Walking between my room and his to see the difference, I notice an enormous difference in game quality. That includes Graphics, online experience, and in Spiderman 3's case, game scale.
The one thing in the PS2's favour is Pro Evo 6, which was clearly very poorly done on 360 compared to PS2. I am thinking it will be better this year on 360 though.
As for prices, personally I don't buy many games, usually I buy the one that looks best at the time and has a good online experience so I get plenty of replay value. I do still play as many games as I did and would on PS2 but instead, I swap games or just get a loan of games of my friends for a week or 2 and swap back when its no longer fun. Much cheaper than 20 euro every week because PS2 games get so old, so fast :2thumbsup:

Going to wait for the price to drop, PS3 gets almost every game that's released on the 360 and has a few exclusives of it's own, and it's a much better looking machine, and most importantly it's silent and it stays cool. 360 is such an ugly machine, need some looks next to my way to awesome beovision.
Actually the ps3 may be silent, but it takes more power, make sure it is also on a cool surface (like marble), i had it on a wooden table before and it left a nasty mark on it due to its heating problems (also games seem to crash for no reason when it heats up). I had no problems when i put it on the ground though.
It may be just my environment (which is generally hot when the AC is not on ~;p) but that thing is pretty power hungry. On another note, i also discovered the 360 needs to be standing vertically if you ever want to avoid its hardware problems, so yeah ~;p
Last but not least, the PS3 has an inferior texturing power, so its kinda a bit more crappy compared to the xbox 360 graphically. I'm sure graphics doesn't matter for you though, the PS3 has alot of potential and this E3 excited me alot more but i still suggest you keep the 360 for a long while before you decide to trade.

Well, if you've played the 'classics' then there might only be average games left. The 360 doesn't seem to have any 'must have' games at the moment, and few things that interest me coming up (those that do are multi platform).
Personally if I *had* to get a next gen console I'd probably go for the Wii, and in the long run I'd still put my money on the PS3 (exclusives ! Microsoft is focussing on Games for Windows too, which means even gears isn't an exclusive anymore).

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I'm still enjoying unranked Gears of War with the same 7 guys I was playing with in January. Other than that, I play Call of Duty 3 ranked and soon I'll begin playing GRAW 2 online, which I bought when it was released.
However now that I think about it, I really do despise microsoft to the point where I'll try not to buy any of their products when there is another option. They just grab money so much. I mean, £40 a year for Xbox live isn't too bad, because its a top class service, but they make developers make you PAY for map packs for almost every game. For Gears of war the first 2 maps where free because the discovery channel paid for them, but the next 4 we had to pay for. Cliffy B wanted them to be free, but Microsoft said charge them or no release. £10 for 4 maps where I bought the actual game for £40? Thats just insane and moneygrabbin. All of you guys don't buy a 360, get a PS3. :smash:

Ah shooters, that explains why you like the 360 so much :jester:
Sony is possibly worse than microsoft, 600€ console (with some features missing in Europe), 80€ games (20€ more than 360 games and twice as high as PC games, what the hell ?) and more than likely a controller that does feature the rumble feature in the future, so everyone will buy that too.
Actually, the whole point of consoles is to create a monopoly, so nobody should be surprised when stuff like this happens. :furious3:

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Yeah, consoles are communism(everybody gets the same, only some get less).
Long live PCs!
I mean now that consoles come close to the capabilities of PCs(though I don't know whether Word is available for the 360), they also start entering the same price range, despite the fact that you pay more for the software anyway. Since you can get console-like controllers for PCs for quite some time, there shouldn't be much of a reason to prefer a console over a PC, PCs can do most of the things consoles can do(probably even all of the things consoles can do) and more. If you buy an office PC for office stuff and a console for gaming, you could just as well buy a gaming PC since then you get one machine which can do both.
Maybe PCs require a bit more work to maintain but just wait for the first console viruses when you will have to send it back to the manufacturer for two weeks of maintenance until you can use it again. ~;)

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
If there ever needs convincing that a 360 is a great console, I just need to remind you of two things:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (and the Gold edition)

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Looks like Microsoft came clean about the bad design:
Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.

I tend to find gaming on a console more fun though, when you work with a computer all day you don't really want to use one again for entertainment. And consoles do get more and arguably more diverse games. There's also no need to worry about compatibility issues and less of an issue with bugs. There have been several PC games where I spent more than a day getting them to work. The extra cost of console games then seems like a small issue compared to losing precious free time (at the times when it's actually precious, I either seem to have way too much or way too little).

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I, too, am a fan of PC gaming. I'd rather kill myself than see the death of PC gaming. Play a first-person shooter on the PC multiplayer, and then play it on a console multiplayer. I will guarantee you that your reflexes and accuracy will be a whole lot better with a mouse than it is with an analog stick.
Plus, one thing that PC games have that consoles don't is the huge modding community. Finished a game on the console? Take it back to the gaming store for a trade-in. Finished a game on the PC? Look online for mods to enhance it and play it again.

That's a different issue, you should hate the work, not the computer you use to do it. ~;)
Concerning the amount of work computers need, I think I mentioned that, they tend to be more work because they offer more diversity. And the amount of games available for PCs could be the same as for consoles, there is nothing about a Pc that makes it impossible, the developers just don't create PC versions. You could say the same about Word and consoles but with such programs, consoles would become more like PCs again.
Things like the Wii controllers could've been made for Pcs for quite some time if anyone had wanted to make them I guess, Track IR is around for some years already though the technology is completely different from a Wii controller, it shows that Pcs can use non-standard controllers as well, someone "just" has to create a decive and a driver, I'm not sure whether that is possible with older consoles as well. Modern consoles are, like I said, closer to PCs anyway.
And while you have a problem with time, I have more of a problem with money, so I prefer cheaper games.

I don't hate the work or the computer, I just have a harder time relaxing when using a computer to play games after working on it all day. I know many people who feel the same.

I'm not denying that, but producing for consoles is just more profitable.

All true of course, though new perhipals tend to fail miserably on the PC.

I got a ps2 for christmas and buy 20€ platinum games now, not exactly expensive.
I'm not saying console gaming is better or worse than PC gaming, they're different, and both are good :2thumbsup:

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I do think the attractiveness of the 360 is to an extent dependant on your location. In the US it's essentially an older console. It's a little more mature. More titles, better online service, cheaper. In addition Microsoft don't seem to have built up quite such a reputation for bad customer service as they have here in the UK.

There's going to be a PSP edition. It won't have missing sound effects, and it will have a snazzy version of Rondo of Blood on the UMD too. For the sake of argument, there's also the original PS1 version out there for those with more money than sense.
If I had a 360 I'd get this game within an hour of setting the console up, but it won't push me towards getting one. None of the handful of downloadable games I want will. It's just not worth paying in the region of £270 for a console plus £60 for the wireless doodad so it can access my connection simply to play a few downloadables which cost ... I think it's around £5. Sure there's games I want coming out in the future. By the time they arrive the console might be cheaper, and the Falcon version may be on shelves. Microsoft might have sorted out the backwards compatability by then too.

What about it?
Come Christmas the 360 is more likely to appeal to a frog, assuming all those nice RPGs and quirky Katamari type games are available. The Falcon version of the console should be on shelves about the same time, hopefully with a price cut. At that point it will be mighty attractive.
Probably a good thing the next gen does presently appeal, all in all. My to-play pile is massive. :sweatdrop:

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
I don't own any current gen consoles, and just packed up all 3 of my last gen ones a few months ago due to disuse... The one friend of mine who did buy a Xbrick360 is on his 6th console, no joke. Yeah, like I'm gonna jump on that, and most all of the games I want to play are already on PC as well. Meh, I'll wait until stuff hits the bargain bin along with the Lemster.

~:( I was hoping you'd say "It's like Freedom Force, if you ever played that." The world needs more humorous weird semi-strategic superhero games.
I don't have the reflexes to be good at fighting games, nor really the patience to spend hours learning moves and practicing.
Drowning? Only half my collection comprises of RPGs of one sort or another. That's up to my chin :tongueg: :winkg:

Re: Seems like the 360 is a stinker.
Actually, it is like Freedom Force. It's a top-down platformer. Light attack on the A button and heavy attack on the B button (ABA for trip attacks, ABB for stuns, AAB for popups). Then you've got your superhero/villian powers mapped to the RT. It's very easy, and very engrossing.

So you got the new hero and villain content packs them? The idea of fighting Dr. Doom as Dr. Doom is amusing. I'm working on unlocking the last secret character (Silver Surfer) and the rest of the alternate costumes. Which means I gotta play as the lamer characters like Electra and Moon Knight.

I have the Gold edition, which is the game + the hero/villain packs. No downloading needed.
I am amused at the banter between HeroDoom and BossDoom at the end of the game (and nets you an achievement).
But the best conversation in the entire game is the one between Deadpool and Dark Spider-Man. Online dating sites ftw!
I like Silver Surfer since he's the only character who has an actual direct healing power. But my favorites are Deadpool and Black Panther. Deadpool's buff gives you +20-30 damage per hit, and his Gun Fire power is rapid shot. It doesn't take a degree to figure out that this combination is a boss killer. I can get a good 400 damage with Black Panther's Claw Slash power with Attuma's Wrath item (+25% power damage). When Deadpool's power runs out, I switch to Black Panther.

Hmm. Potentially hopeful. What about it makes it such a standout title in your opinion?
Does it have the same amount of humour? Superheroes are something I struggle to tolerate if its straight-faced. They’re too absurd.

I saw a news headline for a big update to the PAL console's BC a few days ago. Something in the region of 80 titles added or tweaked.
They'd better not give up - there's still a lot of good games left which won't work. Beyond Good and Evil being one I see a lot muttering about.
