From what I can tell the hoplites' power lies in staying power, holding the line, but it will take a lot of time for them to kill off the unit they're fighting so try to flank with some sword equipped units, even peltastai work well enough.
Wich units do you favor? And why?
I like the Celtic heavies especially the Casse guys. Calawre, Milnaht and the Goidilic heavies are also top notch. I really like the power they have plowing through a flank and the woad. I like woad. The Rycalawre are also a really powerful and also very very good looking. I'm hoping that the dynamic Celtic reforms get implemented because it's quite hard to get to 120 BC without achieving your VCs and/or losing interest.
Also the noble types of Armored Horse Archers from the steppe. Maneuverability, deadly with a bow, and then powerful charge. What's not to like?
I also like the tracian peltast they i think they are one of the best skirmisers in the game they are ideal for supporting phalnax and hoplites.
Dorkim Afrikanim Aloophim-Elite African Infantry
They never rout and their casulty rates are almost none , no matter what they are fighting.Once i hold 2 units of Galaktikoi Kleruchoi with one of them and had total of 5 casualties in the end on huge size unit.
Chaeonian Agema.
Easily the best looking phalangite in the game. And they're good with their swords too.
I like the Dehbed Asavara a lot. They are a true jack-of-all-trades; There is no enemy heavy enough to not charge, they are superb against horse archers, they have their use a reliable general purpose utility unit; Excellent archery while they fare well enough in melee. A Parthian staple unit. Versatility is my melody.
I have 4:
Thraikioi Rhompaiaphoroi - probably the best shock infantry the game
Thraikioi Prodromoi - highly effective at chasing down skirmishing or routing units, decent charge, awsome skin, and not too expensive
Thraikioi Peltastai - excellent skirmishers that are also good in melee
A certain archer unit which you haven't seen yet - as well protected as the Cretans and Syrians but with range and power almost equalling the various steppe archers
Pahlava Shivatir. Swift, reliable, rarely miss the mark, and on top of it: they bite back in melee.
Peltastai: reliable, 'long range javelins', mobile, good melee fighters - *will rout most cavalry*
Pantodapoi. Who cares for an Anti Missile Shield if He has Pantodapoi? And they don't complain either.
Hippakontistai: reliable jav-cav with added punch for melee, no enemy likes his belly being torn apart by those blades. No enemy likes his belly been torn to shreads anyway, but never mind.
Epilektoi Hoplitai - especialy those that aren't public yet. If you like Hoplites, than you'll love the Epilektoi. What more's there to be said?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hoplites' main strengths are defeating cavalry, holding the line and fighting on top of walls. The main reason is their equipment + morale. Hence you'd best deploy them as your reserves, much like the Diadochi Pheraspidai. Relying on local auxilliaries to take the first blows, and then moving your hoplites in for the kill should work fairly well. (Playing as the Aedui I found that lots of factional troops + 1 unit of gaesatae + 2 units of Massalitotai Hoplitai + some balearic slingers did work wonders against the Carthiginian hordes I eventually faced.)
And to think of the skin that was made for them! ... ~;)Quote:

Galatian Kluddolon.
They *rock*
Incredibly high morale, low cost, decent attack, cheap, hireable, useable, large units, flankage, great for an Armenian mobile Alexander.
Scythed chariots, of course.
komatai Agrianai, Excellent bowmen in my experience and fantastic hand to hand fighters
Epilektai Hoplitai rock hardcore, they broke the left side of my phalanx from the front. :inquisitive: Even with their shorter spears then their macedonian brethren, they pack one hell of a punch, Of course after they routed a unit of Phalangitai I checked, and slaughtered them all down to the last man :smash:
But they are one hell of a unit, I've got to give them that.
My fav unit just for this :2thumbsup:
Qarthadast's Elite African Infantry, because they look great and put up a decent fight :smash:
I'm liking the Samnite Hvy mercs at the moment.
They're a great counter to the Gaesatae.
Certain units that I will not tell you about
For the sheer looks, I like the Elite African Pikemen. For usefulness I'd say the Bakterian Horse Archers.
Hetairoi, Chaeonion Agema, Aedui Solduros, looking forward to the new Epilektoi Hoplitai
A new one of these with lots lots lots more of our units is in the works, but since it's 'favorite unit' thread time, I thought I'd post the one from back in March:
You guys have way to much free time :laugh4:
You should see all the captions/EB slogans we have for it. Tons! :laugh4:
In my Aedui campaign I've fallen in love with Gaesatae, though we remain "just friends". I don't use many of them, but the ones I use are really heroic.
This is the one question I just can't answer.... I mean... its just too many of them!!!!:dizzy2:
p.s but back when I played vanilla my favorite was the Armored Hoplites.
lol at the units that aren't in now that I've noticed .
I like the Balearic slingers. Simple and effective.
I think the best units in the game are those that are cheap and give a lot more than they cost like casse short swordsmen. THey are ideal for massive tactics and theirs lack of statics is overcomed by their cheap cost.Just flood the enemy with them
I got to admit though I do like Neitos . Nothing more satisfying than disciplined "barbarians" cutting down "civilized" people .
Thraikioi Rhompaiaphoroi with that huge scary blade, great mesh/skin & such an onomatopoeic name, its my favourite :balloon2:
Totally playing Getai first thing when the next EB version comes out.
the gesatae or whatever the mercenary equievelent fro masia minor are called.
playing as the haysadan ive found them to be an extremely useful luxury soldier. they are noticably awesome in seiges both atacking and defending.
i am currently partaking in a punitve raid north west of the caspian to punish the sweboz, and i have two gesatae in my raid army. I like the idea of out barabarian-ing the germans!
of course haysadan have several cool units of their own. their various horse archers are extremely effective, but to generic to be a favourite. their generals are truly awesome i have never had one die on the battlefield.
Agarian assualt infantry and Princeps i like they way they look and they do my bidding nicely
I like the sacred band cavalry. I changed their animation to the two handed spear and its always cool to have that shield in front of their shoulder when they charge.
I really like my Xystophoroi Hippeis .
Not particularly "uber" , I guess I like the job(s) I make them do .
The just stand and watch until the time is right , then 2 units of them ( in my hoplite army ) carry out the wonderful task of collapsing a wing / slaughtering the general in a thunderous charge .
Since they are noble cavalry , they never-ever lose more than 3-4 guys per unit ( on large scale ) .
We will not waste carelessly the elite of our city .
I find myself liking more mid-tier ( aka early " elite " ) units , because by the time I can train Spartans ( for example ) I already have some tough-as-nails ( golden ) veteran hoplites for who I care a lot more .
Usually they are stuck together with an old ( also favourite ) dog-of-war general ( I found out that good generals are the selfish ones , cleverness is irrelevant , more important is that they do not regret breaking the famous eggs for the famous omelette ) and they're more precious to me than the city of Rome ( who never really liked me actually ) .
Does anyone else find himself under the charm of the veterans ?
Oh , a veteran KH general can actually take the pain from almost an entire army while the rest of his troops form an outer circle and proceed to slay everything in the circle quickly and efficiently . I discovered that today . Hooray for the war-monger/-master
Satyros
Aspet Hetzelazor, cheap while fairly effective medium cavalry. One of the cornerstones in my Hayasdan armies (the others being missile cav, Kavakaza Sparabara, missile infantry and cataphracts). And they look good.
The Greek Levy / Hellenic Levy / Hellenic Native Phalanx unit:
- it is (relativly) cheap,
- available with MIC2 and
- you have lots of privinces where you can recruit them.
Oh, and the Epirotes, the Macedonians, the KH, Pontos, the AS, the Ptolemaii (sorry, forgot the greek plural) and Baktria field them (at least one variant of it). Maybe the Getai too (but this I do not know for sure).
EDIT: No KH and no Getai, I checked it.
Koinon Hellenon General's Bodyguard, simply because it is the toughest unit EVAR!! They are not the strongest, mind you, but they are most capable at absorbing godly amounts of punishment before they even consider routing.
For the strongest unit, I would want to pick the Cohors Reformata. These over-equipped middle-aged legionnaires kick Selukid asses like no other!
Now for the most valuable unit I would pick the drapanai. This getaic unit is cheap, good in ambushing and have a very high anti-armor attack. They flank and rape immobilized hetairoi like no one else! :2thumbsup:
"Favorite" unit for me is whatever offers best all-round utility. Something durable and something which don't necessarily excel in any area but don't fall short in any either. And finally something that functions well on it's own and don't rely on specific tactics or support troops.
For me this something is the Greek Hoplite, and especially the Spartan one.
They are machines, they just keep going. I've never seen a unit of spartans rout when playing them, and very rarely when playing against them. They are extremely durable, very maneuvarable, does well against both infantry and cavalry and don't fall short when fighting on walls. The best all-round unit in the game, imo atleast. Some units do better than the hoplites in some situations, but then again they get slaughtered in other situations where the hoplites still hold their ground.
2 words....:skull:Thorakitai Argyraspidai:skull:...This unit is the product of combining the genetic code of Jason Voorhees ( Friday The 13th) and Maximus Decimus Meridius.:beam:
spartan hopolites. Have you seen 300?
yes, but here they arent naked.
Nor do they randomly break formation to head into slowmo fighting.
Nor do they have a freakishly weird monster dude following them.
Nor do they have millions of other things.
:shame:
What?! Spartiates don't have the SlowMo attack in EB?Quote:
