Minor anomalies and nuisance

Let me report such minor glitches as the title says using this thread. ~:) Others are welcome to post here instead of cluttering the place with plenty of threads.
No major bugs here please! :stop:

The building browser is broken and useless in EB. For some reason it does not like the "and not" variable which is extensively used in the EB edb. We can't do anything about it.

So, what about the docks? ~:) Is it really a buglet or something intended that rests in ambush to surprise me when the time is ripe? :jumping:

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Well, the Lusotannan are expert ambushers and all... But I wouldn't worry much about the docks.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I'm not sure wether this is minor stuff, but I don't like to open a new thread:
1. As Ptolemaioi I cannot recruit Cretan Archers because the necessary level 1 or 2 government cannot be installed in Crete. I just copied the Cretan Archers to a barrack with a level 3 or 4 government to get them.
2. In Meroe I should be able to recruit bush elephants - that isat least what the ingame description of the MIC tells me. But the unit does not appear in the roster. I did not try to solve the problem because bush elephants were probably never used in warfare.
3. Ptolemaioi can recruit Indian longbowmen. The unit info however is missing, the friendly placeholder appears. I simply copied the unit info file from 0.81 into the 1.0 folder.
4. I would like to recruit Ethiopian warriors but cannot as Ptolemaioi, although the edu gives them to me. I think it's intention of the EB team to let the units only to Saba, to make them a bit exclusive.
But it's nice that you made all the preparations that other factions can have them too. I just had to copy them from Saba to my Ptolemaioi barracks.
EB 1.0 is great!

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Minor issue/annoyance of mine:
In my Romani campaign I have now twice had invisible, non-locateable Carthie armies/FMs siege cities of mine, which forces me to reload since I can't sally with my army since there is no army present! I even tried to find it using an outside army the last time and while it presents the red areas that should indicate where it is sadly those red zones seem to indicate an army that would already be in the city!:inquisitive:

The dummy prince got bored of sitting inside Oxtraca and decided to take a walk to investigate the issue on location:

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2205/...0ff162e5_o.jpg
And I've found my culprit: an invisible Xanthippos. Oddly enough I can not attack him in the open field, even though it shows the little sword. I tried, repeatedly, to no avail. I finally brought him to task when he decided to retreat into a city and show himself there. But I will say that is a most annoying bug.
Note: It shows 14 AD b/c I took the pic before I activated the script; I loaded a game to get this pic.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
That is really odd. I don't think I've ever seen invisible armies before. Could there have been a major disaster that killed every soldier in a stack, making it a ghost army, then that merged with another and remained invisible?
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
LordCurlyton, am I seeing something wrong in your minimap? It seems kind of weird, colourwise.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
AFAICT the map color is actually a lack of minimap texturing. I played the first few years with straight RTW-exe before converting over to BI-exe, which required/recommended the deletion of map.rwm. The mini-map has been that way ever since. I like it, personally. Very crisp and all.
@ Bovi: I didn't think of that, but I DO know that Xanthippos is a spawned character, no? Maybe something weird happened when he got scripted to appear...I can also say that I saw a perfectly visible Xanthippos appear after the start of Punic War I, but (and I can't say positively) I would have sworn there was TWO Xanthippos' in the army, and then I get this invisible, non-assailable, obviously worn down army with a 65-year old Xanthippos in it. Took me some frustration to figure it out, since if he sieged you could not find him and could not sally, as the red ZOCs when you move an army would indicate that he was IN a city I owned!!! And if I COULD manage to somehow locate the phantom with the inside army it would just say path blocked. But as I said he made the fatal mistake of retreating into a city, where I brought him to task with that full stack of Polybian units you see in the screenshot.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I once had the invisible character problem, but in my case it was me who controlled the invisible army!
Playing an EB 0.81 campaign with Baktria, I moved a character with the "move_character" command (to a perfectly valid location) to intercept some brigands and he just vanished. Clicking on the location the character was moved to did select him normally and showed the army layout and the area of movement for the turn, the character stayed invisible on the campaign map however. I tried to attack the brigands with my invisible army, but that caused an immediate CTD (right after I right-clicked the brigands: looked like the game crashed because it couldn't play the attack animation of the invisible character).
So perhaps there is a tiny chance in RTW that "spawning" a character (creating or moving one with a script command) causes the character to become invisible, and that using such a character for some specific actions crashes the game. Could be an explanation for some of the unexplainable crashes ~:)

Has anyone had problems with the Campaignian (sp?) cavalry giving them flashing lines on the battlefield? It's hard to explain, so here's a screen shot:

I've had a similar problem with praetorian cavalry, but that problem was far more severe and often gave me CTDs.

AW: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Seems that this is the right thread for two minor observations I made:
1. In Tyde, the northwesternmost settlement in Spain, there is a Sacred Enclosure to Marduk. This seemed pretty odd to me.
2. As Sweboz I experienced it twice that a family member got both the Spearcarrier and the Gaizaberon ancillary in the same turn. Which seems odd because it's exactly the same thing.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I had a CTD during a battle when I zoomed at the Campanian Cavalry. I also had a similar problem with the praetorian cavalry in 0.8, so this is probably a known issue.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Dunno if you know or not, but the low-res Hoplitai (Greek Classical Hoplites) have a short spear. All other low-res hoplite models have a long spear, as far as I know.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
The Getai unit Komatai Epilektoi has an incorrect upkeep cost. It should be 737 (1/4 of their recruitment cost), but currently it is 168.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
A few issues I've noticed (apologies if these have been posted in other threads):
1. Some of the untyped public order bonuses remain. I've seen them on two flavors of AS temple, one flavor of Hayasdan temple, and a few other places I don't remember as specifically.
2. In my Hayasdan campaign, I now have duplicate homeland/expansion region markers in the pan-caucasus provinces (except the capital). One set appeared as normal after the capital triggered the start of the reform, and the other set seems to have showed up after I captured Karkathiokerta (Sophene province, in case I totally butchered the city's spelling...). Not a problem as far as gameplay (these markers share my culture), it's just a bit of unnecessary clutter in the city.
3. My AS campaign ran into the Babylonian New Year bug noted elsewhere. Maybe this is intended but unclear, but I find it odd that the Babylonian New Year trait triggered when the faction leader was in Antioch at the start of spring - seems pretty far from Babylon to me...
4. One of my AS guys (I think the one who starts out in Ipsos or Sardis) starts with a Mentor ancillary who says he reduces squalor. His actual effect is to increase squalor. Not that I mind - it's relatively easy to move the ancillary along so he's putting the brakes on someplace like Antioch. ~:)
5. Again, maybe WAD, but I noticed that both of my satraps in the AS campaign got the "minting own coins" trait very soon after their satrapy ancillary, despite being Loyal characters. Perhaps the minting trait isn't as closely tied to the basic character traits as I'd expect, though.

So do Druhtiz Habukisku, plus they have the option for skirmishing mode or even start the battle in skirmishing mode.

In the Saba factional MIC (at least the very first level) has a gramatical error. At one place, it says "the the". See picture below.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance

I get plenty of such typos in texts but simply ignore them. As I said elsewhere, stock games tend to have at least as much. Some discrepancies in history of the year texts I save though, which are apparently leftovers from the initial copy-paste.
But I'm keeping screenshots of missing descriptions and place holders to upload in lot, instead of piecemeal spam. ~:)

Thanks. That was not the only case of double the's, I've fixed a number of them now :2thumbsup:.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I don't have a screenshot but it can get annoying sometimes. When you try to look at the unit details or get a message pop up. The words and stats are there but in the picture part, its a white blank. I'll try to get a screeny next time it happens.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I saw that on the apothecary once. I think if the guy alt-tabbed out of the game and back in again, the pictures came up fine, then turned white again the next time he pulled the scroll up. The solution was more RAM, IIRC.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Komatai Epilektoi are missing sprites. When you zoom out far enough on the battlefield, the only thing you see where they are supposed to be are their shadows.
The last sentence of the short description for Scythian Foot Archers reads: "However, like most bowmen, they are not well suited." The end of the sentence appears to be missing.
The Year in History popup for 255 BC has a mistake in it:
Quote:
... In Cyclades, Antigonos Gonatas secures the Island League, or Nesiotes, after defeating a serious defeat upon the Ptolemaic admiral Patroklos, ...
'Defeating' should be 'inflicting'.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
The description of the Aorsi Riders implies they should be armored better than the basic horse archers, but they actually have even less armor.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
One of my KH generals, a Spartan, doesn't have a Spartan bodyguard (and curiously also got several traits unbecoming of a Spartan, which I began beating out of him in wars after he completed the Agoge).
EDIT: A regular Claudius, that one.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Only starting spartan generals will have spartan bodyguards. We cannot change this, unfortunately.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I've found a few small things:
- The "Year In History" message appears on the second turn of a year, not the first:
http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/...8m_cbd8e68.png
- When selecting how often you want the Olympics etc. to be held, one of the options says "Biennual" - it should be "Biennial" IMO (I don't think "Biennual" is a word, but even if it is, then it should still be changed in order to fit in with "Quadrennial"):
http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/...7m_297d1c1.png
- The settlement of Ankrya looks like it's surrounded by sand:
http://img03.picoodle.com/img/img03/...3m_ab67928.png
- In the description of the "Zoanon tou Dios", its bonuses are listed twice:
http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/...5m_5faf9b5.png
- This is more a personal thing than a bug, but in my opinion, the image for a sounded rallying horn for a General seems too different from the image for a rallying horn that hasn't been sounded:

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
The YIH thingy is known. Mind you your faction leader receives a YIH trait in Spring. The trait description contains exactly the same as the YIH message. (Which incidentally is simply the trait description triggered through the line "gain_message" or some such piece of code.)
So if you wish you can already look everything up one season before the game pops a message.
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Yeah, 'Biennual' isn't a word...
Babarian towns have always had that white ring around them, just like 'civilized' towns have a white square.
The temple bonuses means that you get +2 morale. Most likely, the building has a base set of bonuses and your faction gets even more because of their cultural familiaritiy with the building.

Quite correct. We "overload" many different unique buildings into one in order to cram more buildings in without hitting the hardcoded limit. In this case, as there is not a faction requirement, it could probably be merged into one instance of the bonus. Or possibly each variant was meant to only have one of them, I don't know.
Code:
onethree requires factions { all, } and hidden_resource not_here

recruits_morale_bonus bonus 1
trade_base_income_bonus bonus 1

Yeah, I noticed this applied to Roman towns after first posting. Does that mean that there is no way to fix it?
-
Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
I think there is a file somewhere that decides what 'picture' goes underneath the town. I thought of changing it so that the littlest circle appears under all town sizes, making the large towns completely cover the whiteness. But I have forgotten what file it was and have been to lazy to look for it. :sweatdrop:

Puellae gaditanae are overpowered!!!
Hey, first of all, great mod. I love everything in EB.
One very minor thing I've found:
The ancillary Puella gaditana has an effect of +2 Influence and -2 Unrest. The +2 influence is ok to me, I know they were supposed to be like wink wink nudge nudge :eyebrows:, but I think that a -2 unrest is a bit excessive for just some chicks shaking her moneymaker.
You know, it's not like they danced for the poor. :beam:
Anyways, it's great to see ancillaries like that. Your attention to detail is massive.
Keep up the good work, chaps!

Budget trouble
I'm getting -sometimes largely- different amounts of mnai in my coffers than the end of turn summary suggests; sometimes more, sometimes less. I re-build the balance using add_money but it's happening every turn now and gets frustrating:

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
Is not EB. The scroll suggests an estimate -and my guess is that it is equal to the income of all your settlements minus the expenses you make- it doesn't cover for rebels popping up, governors dying, protectorates paying you less/more tribute this season, governors changing from one to another, battles you fight, etc. etc.
In short: I've seen that happen with other mods and Vanilla as well.

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
There is a small typo in the Akademia description ("it's" should be "its" in one case):
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/...am_0fa71f2.png
The Lakonike province (here controlled by the Koinon Hellenon) has two small sections taken out of it, one of which is part of the Aitolia province (here controlled by the Eleutheroi), the other one being part of the Kilikia province (here controlled by the Ptolemaioi):

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
My two cents worth while I'm thinking of it...
1. As Romani, I also have the graphics problem with the Campanian cav, although I have (fortunately) not experienced a CTD when viewing them.
2. Despite the client ruler movement fix, I still can't get my Type IV rulers to move out a settlement, even after living there many years and/or being asked (ordered!!!) to sally.
Thanks guys!!!

Possible additional data you could supply us with?
For instance:
-check if you happen to have another character with the exact same (aka one) name? Look among your assasins, spies etc. etc. Particulalry those who got epiteths. Also look among the Client Rulers you got.
-check if you happen to have a whole bunch of Client rulers in place? Say ~20-50 or onwards?
-check if you happened to have conquered/captured the city with a full stack in place when the interloper-client ruler was spawned?
It won't help your game much, but at least we can gather data. (I made a report about it internally as well some days ago.)
-

He was named Letontu. I had one Letontu Oxthracoi, later epitheted the Fat but he was dead by the time. Although I note down all FM/Wife births and dates, this one seems to have slipped and I can't tell you the date right now but I recall he was dead and epitheted when the bug stroke. I have to check in-game for exactness. He might be the culprit.
Lusotannan scribes take careful notes especially of wars, major battles, alliances and protectorates, as well as conquests, annexations and client kingdoms. Thanks to that, I can provide some details:
The first client kingdom (gov4) established by Lusotanna was Campania in 173 BC. Letontunos was the governor of Capua (spawned client ruler).
The second client kingdom was established later the same year and the spawned ruler (in Ariminum) was named Likinos. In 168 BC Ariminum revolted and Likinos was killed.
I had a certain Likinos Mirobricoi, died in 185 BC. Apparently no problem occured about any Likinos.
In the winter of 166 BC client kingdom established in Apulia. The puppet ruler for Arpi was named Letontu but he spawned right out of the city and never got the necessary trait. I decided to use him as a general in the field instead.
In 165 BC. Capua rebelled and Letontunos was killed. (They're always killed probably due to movement restrictions.)
Sometime around here (the scribes didn't write it down) I tried the type IV in Arpi again. Another Letontu was spawned, right out of the city and without the Client Ruler trait. I joined him to the army the other Letontu had been in, and poof! the first Letontu vanished. There's only one there and it has the second Letontu's portrait.
In the winter of 164 BC client kingdom of Kalabria was established. The properly spawned ruler was named Letondu (not Letontu).
In 161 BC. Arpi with no governor revolted. In 159 BC it was taken back but a type III government was ordered.
Agent names, I have to check in-game. Only those of permanent ambassadors are of interest to the scribes and they don't match with the client ruler names.
Quote:
-check if you happen to have a whole bunch of Client rulers in place? Say ~20-50 or onwards?
Per above, that's not the case. I've been newly experimenting with client rulers and their total number is 4, including the killed ones in revolts (< 4 at a time that is). If a type IV settlement revolts and is taken back, then a type III (annexation in RP terms) is built.
Quote:
-check if you happened to have conquered/captured the city with a full stack in place when the interloper-client ruler was spawned?
Inapplicable. Much less than a full stack with mostly depleted units.
Hope it helps you narrow it down if a little.

also, a really odd thing: after I took Syracuse in 253 bc or so, icons of the "fish" resources popped up in all Italy, even in inland areas (only the icons, not the resource itself), look at the screenshot

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
1)
http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/...1m_3aa10f3.png
a) After combining an army with another army that was besieging a settlement, the combined army continued besieging the settlement, but the Family Member in charge appeared to be crouching (as if ambushing or out of movement points), rather than standing and facing the settlement, as he was doing previously. It may be important to note that the army originally besieging the settlement was led by the same Family Member who was put in charge of the combined army, and that the army that merged with his was led by a captain.
2)
http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/...2m_fafeb7f.png
a) [Not technically a bug]. This character (who, I believe, is the Faction Leader of Makedonia at the start of the game) is both a Moderate Drinker and an Occasional Drinker. What is the point of having two groups traits that convey basically the same thing (i.e. how much one drinks and the regularity of their drinking sessions)?
3)
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...3m_a144425.png
a) A word is missing after the word "covered".
4)
http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/...4m_6ccfb4f.png
a) The Eleutheroi Family Member who is in Thermon at the start of the game (I believe) has a Peasant unit card for his bodyguard unit.
5)
http://img27.picoodle.com/img/img27/...6m_e7fedb6.png
a) [Not technically a bug]. As the word in brackets after a building's or unit's description is meant to be in English, I suggest changing "Gymnasion (Gymnasion)" to "Gymnasion (Gymnasium)" or "Gymnasion (Excercise Area)" or something similar, as "gymnasion" is not a word in English; and, moreover, if the player doesn't understand what "Gymnasion" means when they read it as a transliteration from Greek, reading the same word again will not help them!
6)
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...7m_ae9e62a.png
a) "The Medieval ages" should be changed either to "medieval times" or "the Middle Ages".
b) This phrase does not make sense: it must be changed accordingly (for example, by changing the word "defences" to "armour").
c) There should not be a comma here.
d) "Bronzen" should be changed to "bronze" here, as "bronzen" is not a word!
7)
http://img30.picoodle.com/img/img30/...8m_7beb850.png
a) [Not technically a bug]. Inappropiate tone?
8)
http://img03.picoodle.com/img/img03/...9m_a4380bf.png
a) [Not technically a bug]. In my opinion, it would be better to use a colon here.
b) [Not technically a bug]. Inappropriate tone?
c) The word "do" is not needed here and should be removed.
9)
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...0m_81d44ef.png
a) It seems strange that the Eleutheroi, who are, by definition, not a united people, should have a capital. Therefore, could the capital be moved to the settlement in the province of Eremos? If the Eleutheroi have a tendency to move it around from time to time, then could the script move it back to Terhazza (I believe that's the right one) every turn after the Eleutheroi finish their go?
10)
http://img32.picoodle.com/img/img32/...2m_350e36b.png
a) "From what" should be changed to "to that which".

I had to read the description three times before I realised that the character's settling of accounts and his going shopping were separate events (i.e. it did not mean that this character went shopping straight after settling accounts). Secondly, why should this stinginess (or at least, that was my overall impression after reading the trait's description) make the character "Repulsive"? Both the title and the description of this trait need to be changed, in my opinion.

1) The combined movement points are those of the army with the lesser ones. The joining army used all their points and as a result the combined army had none left. Independent units aren't affected. (Your general might leave the army and go away granted that he has mps left.)
7) In-game humour I believe. ~;)
9) The capital is moved autoidiotically by the AI and is not moddable, AFAIK.
17) Apeleutheroi are spawned in all rebelling settlements, no matter what the faction. ADD: The higher the mic level, the fewer the apeleutheroi.

Possible additional data you could supply us with?
For instance:

In the winter of 166 BC client kingdom established in Apulia. The puppet ruler for Arpi was named Letontu but he spawned right out of the city and never got the necessary trait. I decided to use him as a general in the field instead.
I've checked and Letontu the Fat (fka Oxthracoi) was recorded to have died in 166 BC. He's probably the cause.
Suggestion:
If the client rulers' names can be any name then make alien names (Hellene, Gaul, Romani and Tsori?) to the faction's roster.
If the client rulers' names need to be in the faction's name list then tag them as Letontu_client etc.

It may be important to note that the army originally besieging the settlement was led by the same Family Member who was put in charge of the combined army, and that the army that merged with his was led by a captain.
In game weirdness. No really: it's the default thing a general does after traveling and having run out of 'movement points'. So if either of the general cannot travel further than this particular spot...

If the Eleutheroi have a tendency to move it around from time to time, then could the script move it back to Terhazza (I believe that's the right one) every turn after the Eleutheroi finish their go?
Internal engine craziness. Perhaps possible, but then again Terhazza is as good as any other Free settlement for imaginary capital purposes.

Foot came up with an untested, unconfirmed but quite possible theory about this issue altogether. Currently the issue is that the engine mixes up the cultures of buildings placed through script. This is one such building.
Yes, anyone should be able to: Vanilla RTW doesn't read this three for the price of one sentence. But I do not think it is really neccesary to change it.

AFAIK it is one of the top levels, or even the very top level itself of a rather obnoxious bad habit. So had you read the trait description he previously acquired and remembered them you'd know what this one refers to. So the top level of an obnoxious bad habit: how would one judge him? The answer 'Repulsive' is quite possible. Beyond that it is a matter of taste if you want to keep refering to the nature of the bad habit through every level.
Also, IIRC this description is apart from its name copied over from a previous level.
I think this is the result of the way the engine renders the GUI. Since the picture is fine by any means if you look at the unit description (and we're talking about the same picture here!), I doubt that nothing but a completely different pose would help. And I doubt that'd be as aesthetically pleasing.

a) We're not using one specific form of English accross the board, so to speak. We've had a discussion about this internally, and decided we'd not maintain one specific English clause. (Mostly, I guess, because half of the descriptions are naturally written in American English (American EB Members, people who've been spending too much time in American English texts, etc.) and the other half are naturally written in British English (which is what most non-English people are taught at school AFAIK, and the native clause of the British members).
b) See a.
See 16a.
The result of rebellion or bribery which caused the settlement to join the Saba. These units are not meant to be 'Eleutheroi only', they are a unit every faction can get - but only the Eleutheroi can recruit. The reason for their existence altogether is to solve an annoying rebellion CTD, and they are also used as 'bait' to incite the Eleutheroi to upgrade/build MICs. (The desired result of this role is that new, better units become available to the Eleutheroi which should ensure better chances at survival.)

Thats a vanilla bug. Your state of war/alliances remains after a faction is killed. This also means that if a faction is allied to someone who you are at war with then they die. That first faction will never be able to ally with you. Since an alliance/war between two peoples means that anyone allied to them is effected, it will effect dead factions too.

i also noticed that Anatolian, Cappadocian hillmen and Eastern axeman too, have by default a rather weird for heavy infantry (thats what it says they are anyway) very thin formation that would be more suitable for a skirmisher unit.
is there a reason for that?

That has always been like that. Devistation caused by a foreign army living off the land. The red streaks appear when it gets really bad.

I'm quite sure the english word is "contamination"
But then you still have to know what that certain figure of speech exactly means.
(De vertaling van bv. de stijlfiguur Zeugma zou al wat moeilijker liggen...)

Re: Minor anomalies and nuisance
'k Ben bang dat je nu niet de stijlfiguur maar de 'besmetting' zou bedoelen in het Engels. Althans Wikipedia noemt geen "contamination" onder "figure of speech" - en wat dat betreft is het doorgaans wel correct.
In het Engels heten veel stijlfiguren hetzelfd als in het grammatica jargon, dus het zou zomaar kunnen dat Zeugma simpelweg Zeugma is (google bevesitgt dit vermoeden).

Another Lusotannan gov4/Client Ruler problem:
In Avaricum, Olindikus gets the Interloper trait and full movement points when spawned (correctly, inside the settlement). It's only the next turn when he gets the Client Ruler trait and movement restrictions, and gets rid of the Interloper.
Tested twice (reloading). Nobody's got the same name (Olindikus).
