Colbert said his final decision would be announced on a "more prestigeous show," which turned out to be his own.

IIRC, I don't think that applies to cable. Only broadcast TV and radio.

He's similar to John Stewart, but his delivery is not as good. Yes, no?

Stewart and Colbert practice two completely different forms of comedy. Stewart is traditional comedian, making wisecracks in a very direct way. Colbert plays a character, a sort of high-status idiot.

99% of the stuff coming out of Colbert's mouth is hogwash. The reason this is funny is that in the U.S.A., we have channel after channel of self-important talking heads pretending to deliver news (see CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc.). To increase ratings, these channels use pretentious, high-volume, low-IQ presenters. In the last few years the situation has gotten rather ridiculous. So Colbert is actually a dead-on parody of cable news culture.

Satire, meet parody. Parody, meet satire.

I like him and Stewart. I just like his routine in general, making fun of the obvious in politics.

Maybe for democrats who operate on republican stereotypes he's hilarious, but I rarely laugh.

Take off the partisan blinkers and watch him again. He's a very skilled comic, and his targets are much broader than Republicans. Ever since the Democrats took control of Congress, he's been needling them.

Like any good comedian, Colbert goes after hypocrisy and power. Don't let your attachment to a particular party deny you a good laugh.

I'll admit, I've watched very little of his show.... I mean, who watches shows that they think are boring? He's about as original and fresh as SNL currently is.

I didn't say I never laugh.

I'll admit I haven't had access to comedy central the last few months. But when I watched him, even when he did poke fun at the dems he did it in a stereotypical way to jab the republicans as well.

Sorry, I don't like being stereotyped to be laughed at.

What's really disconcerting is that I'm agreeing with Republicans, :ahhhhh:. :laugh4:

Colbert is simply asinine. Colbert is never funny except for when he goes to interview people at their own place of work or homes. When he does that, sometimes he can be truly hilarious. He used to be funny when he did that on the Jon Stewart show, too.

However, while giving monologues on his own show, or whenever he has guests come on his show to be interviewed every time in the last 5 minutes of his own show, then he is always 100% asinine and 100% unfunny. To make matters worse, on his own show he only ever is funny during interviews with congressmen, who are very dry, lame interview subjects which drag down the comedy potential of those segments immensely. If he had a show of nothing but conducting those type of interviews with interesting guests, then he would have a comedy goldmine on his hands. Instead of the unfunny, complete drivel that his current show is.

"The Word" segment has never, ever had anything even remotely funny on it and is probably the most stupid, pointless, biggest waste of time, filler segment ever put onto any so-called "comedy" show.

It's like Colbert knows how to be funny (as evidenced by his hilarious interviews on others' territory from the Jon Stewart show and when he interviews congressmen on his own show), but 99% of the time he chooses not to be funny (as evidenced by any time he is saying absolutely anything on his own show; other than interviewing congressmen in the field. Yet, not in the interviews he has with the guests who come to his own show even if they too are politicians.)

His segment on the Jon Stewart show implying he would run for President was a classic example of all of this. There wasn't a single funny thing about any of that. It was just dumb and boring.

It is also offensive how both Colbert and Stewart use their shows to propagate leftwing propaganda.

I think Navaros may actually be onto something. I vaguely remember thinking Colbert was amusing back when he was a correspondent on the Daily Show. On the other hand, I thought the Daily Show took a nosedive in general after Kilborn left.. maybe that's just me though. :shrug:

I'd have to disagree, because what he was getting at was funny. The indecisiveness and roundaboutness (yes I can make up words too) of politicians in announcing their running for Presidency. It was funny, but not haha - laugh out loud - funny.

Ditto, I watched it like twice and laughed only a couple of times in each episode. One great moment when I caught the end of it the other day was when they were talking about Ellen DeGeneres' long-term Girlfirend changing her last name to DeGeneres. They simply said that they celebrated by:

There is Fox and others that propagate rightwing propaganda too...and those even have the gall to call it "news":wall:

at least Colbert makes no bones about the fact that what he does is entertainment....from then on you pick and choose what you want to watch

as for the rest I have to agree.....Colbert is nowhere near as funny as Stewart or Lewis Black to name another one of my favorite comics....the man is just not even in the same ballpark.

It's just you. Ratings under Kilborn were in the 200,000 range. Under Stewart, they're averaging 1.4 million per night. Awards won under Kilborn: 0. Awards won under Stewart: Lots and lots.

Ratings, awards, general cultural relevance, I don't know how many other measures one can use.

Also, for what it's worth, note that the cast of characters attacking Colbert is identical to the roster of Orgahs who defend Fox News Channel as "fair and balanced."

Oh be quiet. I voted for Bush twice. I am in favor of the war. I believe that we should fight more wars. AND I've loved Colbert since Strangers with Candy.

I dislike Stewart more often than not. His political commentary can be very funny, but I think he is a presumptuous know-it-all who can be tasteless with his jokes.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that Colbert is preferred by 13% of voters as an independent candidate challenging Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Rudy Giuliani. The survey was conducted shortly after Colbert’s surprise announcement that he is lusting for the Oval Office.

The result is similar when Fred Thompson is the Republican in the three-way race. With Thompson as the GOP candidate, Colbert earns 12% of the vote.

Frankly, that's frightening, Lemur. I can only hope that people were taking a piss when they responded to the pollster. Wonder how Peter Griffin would stack up?
