Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
I went to West Point military academy, and am also getting my Masters through there. After the Army, hopefully I will get some help from Urnamma in getting my PhD and going into archaeology.

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
I'm a senior undergraduate at Williams College, in Massachusetts. Next year, I'll be beginning graduate PhD work in Medieval/Byzantine history, although I'm not yet sure where I'll be--Harvard, Notre Dame, Princeton, or Oxford (in England) are all possibilities at the moment.
Yeah, I know, nothing at all to do with the timeline of EB. But that doesn't mean I love the mod any the less. ~;)
Cheers.

Let's go with Masters of Science in Microbiology at... there are just too many options here, but I'll go with Auburn University.
Cheers.
Edit: Although I considered the University of Arizona, U. of Alabama, and so forth, I couldn't come up with anywhere else that is A___ University....

I buy books and read them, always been interested in military history. Degrees? eh? Infantry, bouncing, bodyguarding, security? Library card maybe?

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
Well, after going through all the time and effort to apply, and make arrangements to go to university, at the last minute (literally a week before) I was struck down with a terminal case of apathy and couldn't be arsed going!
I was going to do Chemistry at the University of Hull. Instead, I found a job and have now been sucked into the daily grind of mortgage and "working for the man".
Although, I did go to college part-time for 2 years for a HNC in Chemistry.
Not awfully relevant to anything on EB at all I suppose, but I still love it!!

I went to college for about 12 days. :laugh4:

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
I'm a second year senior at Webster University in St. Louis pursuing a double major in Anthropology and Audio Production. I was planning on a language as a minor, but my schedule was just too booked. I'm considering going for my PhD in ethnomusicology or in a similar field closer to anthropological work.
I have different professors insisting that I'll end up in some sort of ancient studies program before its all said and done, also. I have succumbed to lifelong academia...and there is no way out.

I'm currently attending Northern Arizona University, and will obtain a degree in History, with minors in classics and religious studies.
From here, I'll go on to Holy Cross Hellenic University for graduate degrees in Byzantine Studies and Theology. And from there...I'll eventually perhaps be ordained as an Orthodox Priest. Lots and lots of studying to do!
Some say I'll be wasting a career as a historian by doing so, but really, what matters is what YOU want to do.:book:

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree
See I'm not going to let my like for history die . It will be a nice minor to go along with a hard science . And it will deceive potential employers into thinking I'm capable somehow of higher though :)
Oh and the lawyer dude my dad is a lawyer . What degree did you pursue before you went to law school?

I would be minoring in Classics, except that my school doesn't have minors in the first place. In fact, I'm only one class away from being a History-Classics double major, rather than simply a History major with eight Classics courses.

What period/focus are you thinking of for your Ph.D? I'm curious, as I have a deep interest in Byzantium too:-)

The classics minor here at NAU is a joke, really, but I decided to go for it anyway. I'll be finishing that next semester, along with my Religious Studies minor, which I picked up simply because I only needed 3 more classes for it...and I was going to take those three classes anyway.
Might not hurt you to get that double major. Unless you think it'll affect your GPA....
Out of curiosity, how did you get into Byzantine studies?

Unfortunately, the one class I'm short is the "Classics Major Senior Seminar" course that majors are required to take... the fall of their senior year. I wasn't able to fit it into my schedule (and, on top of that, didn't realize it until several weeks into the semester), so I'll have to settle for a History major, concentrating on Medieval Studies, with a whole heck of a lot of classics courses.
Of course, to make up for it, I am writing an honors thesis for my History degree. My thesis is about the imperial ideology of the Emperor Justinian, and in particular how it related to / affected his domestic policies and especially his decisions to launch campaigns of reconquest in Africa and Italy in the first half of the sixth century. Despite that, in graduate school I would like to focus on Byzantine history during the age of the crusades, particularly from the mid-11th century (pre-Battle of Manzikert) until 1204 (the sack of Constantinople courtesy of a misguided Fourth Crusade), and potentially beyond into the period of the Latin kingdom. Any particular period of focus for yourself?
I'm not really sure how I got into Byzantine history... my college doesn't offer any classes on it, but it seems to "pop up" in a lot of the medieval history courses (like courses on the Vikings, the Christianization of Europe, the First Crusade, and so forth). Given that it seemed to be such a constant peripheral player, I ended up writing several research papers on its influence and experience, and just got drawn in. Part of it is the mystique of "continuing" the old Roman Empire, part of it is straddling the boundaries between the West and the East, and part of it is interest in what has seemingly, at least in America, been cast to the fringes of history despite its substantial importance.
Cheers.

That sounds absolutely fascinating. I'd love to read it when you're done with it. No, seriously. As for myself, I've dabbled through a lot, but there are three main periods that interest me: the Heraklian Dynasty (especially involving Justinian II...what a character), the Late Macedonian Dynasty, the Comnenoi "restoration" and the resulting chaos that was the Angeloi...(which really, is the only kind word I can ascribe to them, everything else usually involves massive amounts of cursing. :wall: I've written a few papers on it (usually the Comnenoi, I have a particular fondness for Alexios and Manuel, though my favorite Byz emperor has to be Justinian II. Any guy who comes back sans a nose and retakes his throne totally gets kudos from me).
Heh. There's been a few times where I've actually had to force some college professors here to see just how important Byzantium really was, in sparing Europe from most Islamic invasions (Charles Martel did the rest, on the other side), as well as the really surprising and instrumental role it had in the Renaissance in Italy. I'm known in the history department here as "That Byzantinist Guy" But suffice it to say...I'm rather ticked it gets the short thrift of the history stick, as it were, here. I never even HEARD of Byzantium, except by accident, in High school (and mostly because I picked up a historical fiction novel about it, and curiosity was unleashed). It only was really mentioned (and lightly at most times, though we did have a solid Byzantine History class, which was pretty nifty:-D)
And indeed, cheers.
-
Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree
Ah, yes, I'm a big fan of the Komnenoi (I wrote a 25-page paper last year on Byzantine perceptions and attitudes towards the First Crusade, so I got to hang out a lot with Anna and Alexios). I'm actually hoping to do a lot of work in graduate school on Byzantium during the age of the crusades (up through the 1204 debacle), so I'll get to spend even more time with them if that works out. Admittedly, I also feel a bit of sympathy for Romanos Diogenes, the poor guy--gets creamed at Manzikert, then manages to get back to Constantinople after being captured only to be deposed and blinded.
Believe me, I know how difficult it is to be a Byzantinist in America. Since my college is very small (only about 2,100 undergrads), the history department only has one medieval historian. As fantastic as he is, he specializes in Carolingian history and, by this point, is less familiar with Byzantine history (or at least with the period of Justinian I) than I am. I've even had directors of graduate programs (like Tom Noble at Notre Dame's medieval institute) warn me of the potential perils of being a Byzantine scholar in the United States: Namely, that the U.S. doesn't give a hoot, and I might never find a job. :wall: Byzantine studies really does get the short end of the stick here in America--maybe a passing mention in a couple of history courses, if you're lucky. I'm really hoping I can contribute to bringing it out from its current location in American academia--as my professor/advisor called it, "the fringes of the fringes". Of course, I've got to at least "market" myself in such a way that I can get a job after graduate school, first, so I may end up at least nominally claiming to be focusing on "Mediterranean history/studies", which is apparently very popular now-a-days. But we all know what'll happen once I finally get a college/university to accept me onto the faculty... :2thumbsup:
Cheers.

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree
OK the first lawyer in the bunch.
I graduated from Wabash College in 05' as a History major and a chemistry minor, where I specialized in West Africa and East Asia. I wrote a 50 page paper on the shipping of riles in a circular from War in the Americas to the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the West, back to the Sugar Fields of Cuba. The riles begin their journey in the New England Coast (During King Phillip's War) to European (Primarily Dutch) slave traders who introduced them to Gold Coast warrior (where rifles were so valuable that local tribes would trade their POW's for rifles), and finally how those newly traded slaves revolted once they arrived in the Americas.
After that, I went to Indiana University Purdue University-Indy to study my MA in Medical Ethics. I'm almost done with that now.
Now I'm midway through my first semester of law school at IU in indy.
and I just got engaged!
whew...
(obviously I just never seem to find time to finish that Roman campaign. I always want to play M/M because I don't want unrealistic AI expansion, but I want the rebels to attack cities. oh the decisions!) Someday, I'll have some time to finish it up though! Salve! :book:

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
Well I like switching between universities 'cuz I have a tendency to get bored a little too often (just like I do with my EB campaigns). So far I had one year in Philosophy at the Babes - Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania (quited) and three years in Psichology (on pause). At this moment I am in my second year at the Ovidius University in Constanta, Romania - Medieval History and still thinking about changing my speciality on Ancient but not sure. Maybe I'll do that when I get bored (just managed to change my specialization from Modern History to Medieval). I might have a problem with taking decisions. :juggle2: So far I'm thinking about a phd in History of the Ottoman Empire or maybe The Crusades. Byzantine Empire is way too complex/vast for an irresolute/skeptical/agnostic like myself.
P.S. At 24 years old I am also thinking about joining The French Foreign Legion but this might be only a lucidity crisis. So far reason said "No!".

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree?
Two years at St. John's College, Annapolis, dual major in philosophy and classics; I was planning to go for a commission in the US Navy once I graduated. Got horrifically sick and used my tuition money to pay for hospital bills, so I took the OTHER route into the Navy. I'm getting out the Navy in about six months, whereupon I'm going back to St. John's through the wonders of the GI Bill. May buck for a commission yet, though I doubt it; I've been eyeing the graduate program in Eastern linguistics at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Its all very true actually, I live in Serbia whose GDP is less then 3,500 $ per capita and I get free health and my medicine - and to tell you something, no body who get's 'horrifically sick' uses his tuition money to pay for hospital bills!
We all get it from the state ! - oh, and yes, my country doesn't spend billions a year for 'plastic' - and insurance companies actually have to report to the goverment and public without a moto - 'less care' - more 'stock's up' - abd share holders...
and sorry, this is my finall post to this subject.. anyone with health problems can come to my country - no one will refuse to give health care if he needs it - that is the law here - and practise
that is all from me ... I wont be addressing in this post again:shame:

If I lived in Serbia I'd probably have been dead. Actually if I'd lived anywhere except London or Maryland I'd probably have been dead; if I'd gotten to the hospital an hour later it'd have been too late, and even then I happened to be lucky enough to be rushed to a hospital with one of the foremost experts in his field.
That's what I meant by the "thank God for Johns Hopkins".

Sorry if I came off as hostile; that wasn't my intent. I have a soapbox on this subject (public vs. private health care systems) that I try very hard to stay off of; obviously I didn't do a good enough job. Mea culpa.

And God knows no "public health care" system would've given half as much a hoot about getting you there in the first place, at least not in anything approaching a timely manner. When you hear tales of Canadians being on a nine-month waiting list for a life-or-death operation, it makes you appreciate the whole "you get what you pay for" line of reasoning.
Cheers.

Biology B.S. and Cultural Anthropology minor at the University of California. It's kind of fun hearing all that Greek and Latin both in EB and in all the scientific names :-P Planning to go on to be an eye doctor :-)

It's good to see that you think doctors do what they do for money. Hearing about insurance companies denying insurance & treatment makes me appreciate the "you have free health insurance, and if you're not happy with it you can go see a private doctor" policy we have in this joint.

Re: So EB players and team members , where do you go to school or what is your degree
Im shocked that Landwalker knows so much about doctors in socialized healthcare countries to know they care nothing for people's health. I want to see where you heard about that nine-month waiting list, I'm sure its some form of anti-healthcare propaganda you've been exposed to. You should watch SICKO, it will make you sick.

Heh heh. Well we don't have a free for all health care system over here in the Netherlands (which doesn't mean hospitals won't take care of you when you need it -- they are obliged to, by law you see ~;)) I don't think most of the countries have that bad a health care if it's free. I mean: say what you will - the NHS is actually pretty good AFAIK.
(Oh and you know what? Your argument is typically applied in the reverse: the Public Doctors don't get paid as much - so they don't really have to go for the money. If they would, they'd set up their own private clinics...)
