Strangest things you've seen in a campaign

My current campaign prodded me to ask this; I want to know about some of the weirdest things you've seen in a campaign, from AI decisions to things that just should not have happened.

We all know the AI is stupid in RTW, but I'm not talking about stupid. I want to talk about AI decisions that just blow your mind because of what just happened.

Here's mine: I'm playing the Getai, it's 260BC. I keep FOW off because I like to see what's going on. The Romani have taken all of southern Italy and are moving large armies into northern Italy, and both Corsica and Sardinia have been annexed. The Greeks are having their feud; Makedonia is struggling to overtake the Koinon Hellenon who are stubborn as all Hell (they never even lost Athens), and all of the cities in the region are just surrounded by black, charred earth. Epeiros is happily slinking its way along the Thracian coast, not bothering with all the hubbub. So here's the fun part...I go down to Greece to take a peek, hoping the KH is still holding on, and here's the situation...A full Mak stack is besieging Athens; a full KH stack is on its way there, and...a Roman half-stack is besieging Korinthos...I really wanted it to win, and it was going to given Korinthos' garrison and the apparently uncaring Mak armies, but they signed a peace treaty and decided to retry it once the full stack was right next to them.

Coolest damned thing ever. I hope to see more of these military oddities (secretly hoping for an early Germanic invasion of Brittania)...

In my Baktrian campaign, I decided to finally start my invasion of Hayasdan. So I took a stack, consisting of my middle-aged faction heir, 2 younger FM's starting their military service, 12 thorakitais, and 4 syrian archers. I easily crushed the large Hayasdan armies of mostly militia, along with a few bodyguard kataphrakts. Anyways, the cities I conquered were completely disloyal, requiring a large garrison and such, while small Hayasdan armies were all over the place, pillaging the countryside, waiting in nearby woods to ambush me, and in general trying to make me feel unwelcomed.

I somehow managed to scrape together a small force from the conquered cities, at the same time trying not to let them rebel, and finally sacked the last Hayasdan city. Despite Hayasdan not being in existence as a faction right now, the former-Hayasdan cities are still very disloyal and close to rebellion.

It all sort of felt like the War of Vietnam. I strangely enjoyed it.

In my Getai campaign, Carthage has abandoned Sicily to attempt to gain a foothold in Greece -namely Athens!
They even actually took it briefly from Makedon.

Hehe, awesome. I love it when the enemy struggles back, but I don't think I've seen such a guerilla effort on the part of the AI. Certainly small armies coming at you in the faction's death throes, but that's different. Very cool.

Sorry for off-topic question but how can you make that FOW off?

Hit ^ (or what ever is left of the 1 on your board) then the console pops up and there you type "toggle_fow". Sometimes it doesn't work at once, just repeat it then. You can toggle it on in the same way.

you have to use the "toggle_fow" command in the console (to open the console you have to press a key that afaik is different for every nation/keyboard, in Italy is \ that is on the left of the "1" key)

In my Romani campaign, I sent a spy wandering across the eastern domains, and found a town in the middle of turkey that had been taken over by the Arverni of all people. :inquisitive:

Of course, they were getting in scraps with the Eleuthoroi and AS and Pontos, but they were still holding out.

Although if a Gaul army can march halfway across the continent and take over a city, I guess they're not going to leave without a fight. :laugh4:

That would be the galatians you have found.

Me not like Galatains.

Me hate Galatians.

Me go find Adam's Galatians and bannish them again.

That happens when someone tries to play smart by conquering Galatia, then leaving it with a small garisson. Result? Galatians realize they'll never survive alone and surrounded by culturally different people and decide to join the Arveni Union. :P ((The Galatians are Gallic immigrants/invaders))

EDIT: The most wierd thing I ever saw was an Alliance between Rome and Carthage. Funny, no?

Happened in my AS campaign right now; Pontos took the city, and then it revolted to the Adeui.

But in yours, you say it revolted to the Arverni?

in my baktria campaign they revolted briefly 2 times but never joining a gaul faction, just defecting to eleutheroi

Carthage was actually allied with Rome for a brief period historically.
Pyrrhus managed even that...

I got flanked in a battle once, and the worst part is i didnt see it coming. I felt ashamed i was outsmarted by RTW AI.

Yeah, Sweboz surprised me with this many times. It's one of the few factions I've had any notable trouble fighting when they had a full stack against my own full stack as Romani, because they have so much infantry. The biggest problem is perhaps their uber-generals that can't be killed quickly, so there's almost always a prolonged line to line fight, which is usually suicide against an enemy on VH/VH... A defensive strat map approach enabled me to push them out on the steppes where I thought they would lack their old key troops, but there, instead, they have gradually transformed their armies to a more typical steppe like troop composition, which is pretty cool and perhaps counts as one of the strange things the OP wanted :yes:

In my sweboz campaign, the stupid casse tried to invade my dutch coastline. With an army full of FMs.
To make a short story even shorter: I killed them all with my badass markomannaz general, and the casse were gone. :laugh4:

Trying to invade the mainland at all is mindblowing, but an army of FMs?

Haha...I've seen them do that too. When they get going, though...I've seen them become beasts.

I just noticed something weird again...

The Hai still only have the 1 province of Hayasdan, but they have a bunch of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 stacks swarming all over it. Aren't they supposed to be the hardest faction ever to play in the history of TW or something? They aren't expanding and they aren't at war with Seleukia...they're just sittin' on the porch with a shotgun.

Every second turn 1/3 stack of Pontos is besieging Pella with full stack of my Romani.
When I sally out, they withdraw once they see my army outside the town.
The next turn they are having a rest and besiege again.
I do not remember how many times they are doing so, maybe it's time for a good ambush :smash:

I also thought sooner or later, one would betray the other, seeing that they shared Sicily.

But no, they became best buddies, each helping the other fight the Lusotannan and the Arveni...And me. Makedonia (Though I ended up destroying them both.)

The strangest thing in my current campaign are the lot of cities that have become Greek by rebellion: Emporion, Messana, Olbia, Trapzunt, Sinope...

Strangest thing: as soon as Olbia became Greek (I think it was Getai before) a FM of Pontos marched all the way up there with a decent army, even though Pontos did not even controll Nikomedia. He did not attack the town but just stood there and turned the tiles black. After several years two other Pontic armies also made the journey and took Olbia. Again only a few turns later Pontos lost Trapezunt and Sinope to the Greek by rebellion... :juggle2:

Played whit epeiros today, defeated macedons homelands and siegd Athens that was currently owned by them. Got a peace request and i accepted becuse the romans didnt play nice this time around. The sige of Athens halted and i was ready to move phyrros towards my ships, they moved the Athens garrison out towards sparta leaveing only the gouvorner behind. This is the wierd part, macedon attackt me again whit one skirmisher unit wile i was still next to Athen. Well we know howe that ended. :laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4:

During my Romani campaign, I turned off the FoW to look around, and boy was I suprised to see a half-stack Bactrian army sitting near Mazaka. How they got there, I have no idea. Bactria was almost dead at this point, only one city and two family members, one in Anatolia. Very bizarre. :inquisitive:

As i was playing as Pontus, The seleucids besieged Halicarnassus but they were defeated. Two turns later the Ptolies besieged the city. It fell to them after a short seige. However they did not hold the city long. It rebelled and went to the KH within two turns. Was pretty funny. I quickly allied with them as the Maks were beginning to gain control of the greek manland.
