New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
2009-01-04: Installer updated to EB 1.2
2009-02-02: Includes 1.2 permanent fixes as of 2009-02-01
2009-02-05: Increased compatability with other mods, can play videos
2009-02-15: Fixed bug where the EDU could not be processed by non-english machines.
2009-07-12: Fixed bug where some files had "imperial_campaign" instead of "barbarian_invasion". Added alternate brightness settings. Added giant tree removal.
2010-07-05: Added a number of fixes to the installer, but not many changes to content. Most importantly, a check if the user has version 1.6 of BI, and a check if the user installed to program files in Vista/Windows 7.
Here is a revamped description of my installer that allows you to play Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion. It now works with EB 1.2! I will try to give as accurate as a description of how it works as well as what I've changed from the previous version. Basically it runs as an installer and gives you several options.
Fixes:
This will install the permanent and optional fixes to EB1.2 as described by the EB 1.2 fixes post. Note that if you install this option, it will not be removed by the uninstaller, so that EB with RTW will still have the fixes.
Main:
Checking this box will allow you to play ANY VERSION of Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion, past, present, and future. It will basically be the same EB as you're used to, only the AI will be much more advanced and challenging, and will be able to conduct naval invasions. The AI will also retrain units. If you only check this box, other mods can be installed after this installer without being screwed up.
Unit Abilities:
Adds the shield_wall ability to: hoplites, non-makedonian phalanx who had the phalanx ability removed in version 1.1, units with large shields who are either "displined" or "highly trained" (e.g. Hastati, but not Rorarii).
Schiltrom: HAS BEEN REMOVED from the installer due to its extreme bugginess. The AI will get confused and "abandon" units that have schiltrom enabled. Also, sometimes schiltromed units will be unable to fight back, resulting a unit that will be massacred without inflicting to much as a single scratch.
Warcry: Psychotic barbarians (such as naked fanatics) whose ferocity is indicated by their unit description.
Can Swim: skirmishers and lightly armored infantry living near water, light and medium cavarly units.
Night Battles:
Generals now have a chance to acquire the "night battles" trait and fight battles at night for a combat bonus.
Torches:
Adds little torches to your units during night battles to spice up your night life.
Hide Banners/Triangles:
This optional item allows you to remove the floating banners and selection triangles for a more realistic and cinematic experience. If you end up not liking this feature, you can restore it by running the trivial script that comes with EB.
Alternative brightness settings:
Added the option of increasing game brightness, using files that the EB team had included with the game. The default brightness is very dim even on bright monitors.
Giant tree removal:
I am including this fix from Centurio Nixalsverdrus because I feel that this is actually a very serious bug from the original game. There are these giant trees that are so large they cause issues with AI pathfinding and make the battlefield almost impossible to see. If selected, this feature will reduce their size to a more realistic one. See https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=112360 for more information.
Victory Conditions:
This copies over the victory conditions text file made by konny from the thread https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=86313 to correct certain problems with the AI, namely, that previously they would not attempt to fulfill their victory conditions and simply attack in every direction, or not attack at all. Now they should expand in a realistic and relatively historical manner.
Some notes on the shieldwall and unit stats:
Some units in regular EB already have what's called a "pseudo shield wall". Basically, the unit spacings were tweaked so that the troop would look like it has a shield wall, but doesn't exactly behave like one. In early versions of this installer, I simply added shield wall without removing the pseudo-shield-wall because it was tied to the "loose" formation. In EB 1.x, pseudo-shield-wall was implemented as the default close formation. Let me attempt to visualize this for you:
Old EB:
normal -> pseudo-shield-wall
EB 1.x:
pseudo-shield-wall -> quasi-loose formation
EB for BI:
true shield wall -> normal -> true loose formation
In order for this to work, I had to change unit spacings, so that units in shield_wall mode wouldn't get squished together and bounce around. These unit spacings are the only stats that have been modified. No other stats have been changed.
Also, the multiplayer backup directory is completely untouched, so BI multiplayer *might* be possible at some point in the future using the trivial script. I welcome any ideas for implementing this in your replies.
I have moved this installer into the public domain, which is now hosted at Sourceforge.
Download it now!
NOTES ON MOD COMPATIBILITY:
I have put a lot of work into creating a C# dll that will parse txt files and update them when neccessary. In English, this means that if this installer is installed last, it should be compatible with *any* mini-mod for EB.
NOTES ON SAVE GAME COMPATABILITY:
Saved games from vanilla EB should be playable. You will get all the new unit abilities and the enhanced AI. The only exception is night battles; you'll have to start a new game to enabled them.
LUCKY BONUS:
As promised, here are some pictures that I've taken on my honeymoon in Greece, Italy and Turkey that have all kinds of pictures of ruins, as well as vases depicting ancient battles, as well as genuine bronze armor and weapons:
Click here to see neat old stuff!

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Many thanks!!! I've been waiting for this for along time!
Though it's still not working perfectly for me. I can load saved games fine, but not start new ones. I get a message telling me to select an item from the list.
Also custom battles no longer work. Once I choose my army composition and click next, I get back to the faction choice screen.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Apparently a file the installer was supposed to copy over isn't. I manually placed the file and I could create a new game successfully. I'll see if I can fix the installer.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Okay, I put the fixed installer online. Please uninstall the old one first, then run the new one. Sorry 'bout that.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I redownloaded the installer and it's still not working. I did uninstall the old one before.
To make sure, the new version I have is 1.1.0.3.

zShare looks great, thanks! In case my website goes down (which happened last night while I was sleeping :wall:), you will still be able to download it directly (I edited the link above).

You have to uninstall the old version 1.0.1.2, and the bugged version of 1.1.0.3. THEN install the fixed version. A reinstall won't fix the problem.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
That's what I did. I never had the 1.1.0.2 installed.
Anyways, redownloaded another time (from the zshare link), and it's working now.
Many thanks again.
PS : I read that the EB team modified the hoplites' stats to make them behave like in a shield wall, wouldn't it be redundant with BI's function (giving them too much bonuses)? Did you cancel out those changes?

It's called "pseudoshieldwall", and you activate it by hitting the loose formation button. It only *looks* like a shieldwall though and doesn't work the same way as the real BI shieldwall.
I haven't disabled it yet though. I'm a bit afraid of changing the formation stats as I have no idea how they work. Anybody have any idea how to "restore" the loose formation?

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Is this save game compatible & does it work with TW Fanatics' phalanx/Roman cohort mod?
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I'm not sure about save game compatible, but I don't think it'd compatible with Fanatic's mod if you select to install shield wall, war cry, etc as to add them you obviously need to change the EDU, which Fanatic's mod also does. But if it's like the last one, you'll be able to install without changing the EDU so it will be compatible, but you'll lose the special BI abilties.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Does the AI use the BI formations? I think in the first version the AI never did. Is this hardcoded or has it been changed?

I was playing the other day and an AI unit turned on schiltrom as I was about to attack it from two sides, so yes, sometimes the AI will use special abilities.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
is it possible to install it without enabling special formations? imo they are unbalancing things a bit
and thanks a lot for the installer:beam:

Just uncheck the option to install special formations. But I disagree that they unbalance the game, since I haven't changed any stats. They just give you more tactical options. Any advantage that a formation gives is offset by its disadvantages; schiltrom is good against attacks on all sides, but weak against missile. Shield wall offers good protection on the front, but is weak against attacks from the rear. The only ability that might unbalance the game is war cry, but the stat bonuses are temporary and the units that use it are nearly naked anyway.

yes, it aint that bad but placing a unit of hoplites in shield formations makes it practically invincible. it is especially through when defending narrow city street. needs a bit of work imo to maybe adjust status accordingly, keeping new formations abilities in mind. i also experienced weird AI behaviour forming a schiltrom in the field with no tread of being surronded or outflanked. a unit would just stand there all alone while the rest of the army is gone. and as we all know AI is bad enough already. i was keen on having BI formation at first but after playing with it for a while changed my mind. it is just a matter of a personal preferences i guess. strangely enough, warcry is the only option that works for me.
thanks again

Isn't that the idea though? You would have the same situation with the phalanx formation. To counter you would assault the unit from behind.

I've had that happen too, but it makes sense doesn't it? If your band of spearmen was split off from the rest of the army, wouldn't you get into a defensive formation? In my situation the units near the spearmen went off to chase down some archers. Near by (but not quite next to it) the unit was faced down with two phalanges and a unit of heavy cavalry. My units closed in, but the spearmen lasted quite a while in the schiltrom formation.
Thankfully if it annoys you, you can just uninstall and uncheck the unit formations option when you reinstall.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Shouldn't the line
campaign imperial_campaign
in descr_strat.txt read:
campaign barbarian_invasion
?

pretty much, but shield wall makes them completely impossible to penetrate trough does it not? iirc, its something like phalanx formation but twice as thight and strong.

im my case, however, they just desided not to follow to rest of their troops but separate themselves instead.

yep, which was a good idea on your end, thanks.
ah, what the heck, i think i'll give the formations a new try with 1.1 released.
btw, are you planning on updating the installer then?

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I also noticed that while the hoplites shield wall makes them quite good at defending, it also made them kill almost no one.

It seems way more historical that way.
Traditionally, when Greeks fought in tight phalanx formation, there was almost no casualties; they just formed a scrum with their shields and pushed each other. When one side broke during the scrum, then the killing began.

Can't remember what exactly, but EB team members mentioned that feature had been removed from EB because it broke something else. Might want to look into that.

Hmmmm....Really?...I modded in Night Battles awhile back, torches and all; I don't recall ever having any problems. I for one would be curious to know what it breaks if it's true.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Having night battles on makes some event screens, such as faction defeated screens, appear as blank. Why those two things have any connection, who knows.

Could you and TWFanatic combine forces (or, more to the point, minimods) and produce one all-encompassing superminimod?

The only thing that doesn't work in a previously saved game are night battles. You'll get the traits for it, but the option will never appear. Other than that, yes, it's save-game compatible.

Maybe, but probably not. My mod is intented ONLY to add features that were introduced with Barbarian Invasion to RTW. If stats are modified or units added, I won't merge with it.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I have installed 1.1.0.3 from the above link, and am getting the "please select an item from the list" error when I click on EB Main Campaign.
Additionally, when I exit the game, I get an error box in Windows saying that there's an error on line 31 column 1 of eb\data\world\maps\campaign\barabarian_invasion\descr_strat.txt
It says that it expected the start date there. If I move the start date up to that line and push the empty "unlockable" and "unplayable" sections down as necessary, then it tells me that the seleucids are not defined in the playable/unplayable/unlockable headers (error then occurs at line 1620, if it matters).
I also tried uninstalling, then reinstalling from the link on your website, in case it was different (it doesn't seem to be)--same problem.
I also tried reinstalling RTW->BI->EB1.0 from scratch... no good. It was a clean install before, anyway, so it should have been OK, but a reinstall didn't fix it.
Also, custom battles seem to be missing most or all faction-specific units. Merc and most or all regional units are there, though. Weird.
UPDATE:
OK, EB on 1.5 does work, though the custom battles are still missing all faction-specific troops (legionnaires of all sorts for Rome, most of the heavier troops for the Seleucids, etc.) *except* for the general's unit. This seems to be an EB problem in general, and not specific to EB for BI, so I'll look for help on that part elsewhere.
That leaves the inability to start new games with EB for BI, which remains. I have also discovered that I cannot continue games started in 1.5 from BI; it acts like it's loading, then dumps me back to the menu with no error message.

I've never seen this happen before. Have you previously tried to install EB on BI manually on your own, or have you any other mods installed?
The process should be:
1) Install RTW
2) Install BI
3) Install BI Patch
4) Install EB
5) Install my patch.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I'm looking into merging permanent fixes into my mod as an additional option. It will take me some time though due to the holidays, so I'll keep you posted.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
great mod, i think.
have a problem, the same as fallingcow
installed RTW
BI
Patched BI to 1.6
Installed EB
Installed your mod
Was EB supposed to be installed in the BI folder?
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
mmh, are you supposed to go like this?
RTW
RTW to 1.5
BI
BI to 1.6
EB
Your mod?
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Another reason why your installation might screw up, is that the default installation folder for Rome Total War is:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\
(in the case of windows 64-bit it's something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Rome - Total War\). The installer assumes that you've installed it to this directory.
If you've installed RTW in another folder, you have to point this installer to that folder. DO NOT add the "data", "bi", or "eb" subdirectory. It just won't work.

You can't load RTW games into BI period, even if they're modded with EB. It's a different engine.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Okay, ive installed it exactly as told, and i still can't start a new campaign
whenever i try to do so, i get this screen:
https://img168.imageshack.us/img168/5269/shiteao8.png
then when i quit the game, it gives me an error message with "error in line 18 in maps/base/descr_regions or sumthin like that, saying that it can't locate Adiabene
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Got the exact same error Cozur, somehow the map doesn't seem to have been copied over or some such, as custom battles work fine.
Also I did a full reinstall to see if that was the problem and its not. Deleting rwn also does nothing.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I just tested two new campaigns, Arverni and Seleukia, and they both worked. Are you doing anything unusual, such as installing to a different directory or installing other mods. Are you guys running Windows Vista?
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I've got it installed on a drive that's not the default, but otherwise the path is the same. It's installing to the right folder. I'm using WinXP SP2, and not using any other mods.

Try the following:
change to folder %your RTW path%\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion
locate descr_strat.txt
open it with notepad
change line 6 from "campaign imperial_campaign" to "campaign barbarian_invasion" (without the quotes)
that should do the trick.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Hi...
I'm gonna try playing EB with BI from now on but i'm a little confused.
1) do i need to uninstal my EB and RTW and reinstal it? becouse that takes a lot of time. and 2) i have Vista.... Will i have any problems? just want to know if it will work for me so id don't start unnistaling everything and finding out that i just waisted 2 hours for nothing:dizzy2:
thanx
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
If you have a working EB installation, you don't need to re-install.
Just use the EB for BI installer. It will copy the necessary files for usage with the BI executable and create a shortcut to start the game with.
When using Vista (with UAC on [which is standard]) you may have to run the game as administrator (right-click on icon and select "run as administrator"), but this is not different to standard EB.

Is this mod compatible with the last permanent fixes (especially with the new rebellion CTD fix) ?

After double-clicking on the new EB for BI icon, for a short time before the application changes to full screen you can see the title Barbarian Invasion in the task bar.
You could also alt-tab out the Rome (might crash your game and look in the task manager for a process rometw-bi.exe.
The simple fact that you can start a campaign shows that you use the BI-exe successfully.
If you have selected the option "shield wall, swimming" etc. during install, during battle you will have a new icon for shield wall for some units. Also when right-clicking on a unit icon on campaign-map the unit description should show if the unit is shield-wall capable, swimming-capable etc.

If so: can I mod the edu to add them and still load my old savegames?

I had the same problem, and tried this . ..without any success. Any new ideas?
Edit: Also, I've been using the Barbarian Invasion for Europa Barbarorum shortcut. If I use the regular EB shortcut, while I run into the same problem, or be merely playing regular non-BI EB?

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
What is the install order? Do you install EB 1.0 over a BI-Vanilla RTW then the patch, or what?
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
.
- Install RTW
- Patch RTW
- Install BI
- Patch BI
- Install EB
- Run the installer
In my case it was 1, 2, 5, 3, 4, 6 and it worked but the above would be the book recipé. :chef:
.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Actually, it would be:
1. Install RTW
2. Install BI
3. Patch BI
4. Install EB
5. Run Installer

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
Thank you very much Ferromancer for creating this.
I am just playing Koinon Hellenon campaign and it's really great, I really appriciate the shield wall for my Spartan hoplites, and also (I have never played EB with barbarian invasion exe, before) those naval invasions are pretty sweet. In this my recent campaing I have reached the year 244BC and Cyprus was conquered and reconquered numerous times by Seleucids respective Ptoleis. And I also saw one failed naval invasion done by Romans on Corsica! And in all my previous EB campaigns which I played with standart RTW.exe there never was attempt by AI controlled factions to do naval invasion on islands.
Good stuff, thank you!

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
1) Does the AI use ships to make landing assaults?
2) How good is the AI compared to normal and Alexander?
3) Is there religion?
4) Is there loyalty with rebelling generals/towns going rebel?
5) What's the order of installation if I also want to install AI formation mod and first cohort/elephant mod?
6) Does the AI retrain?
7) Is it save game compatable?

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I started a Makedonia campaign and i have took all of greece. the eporites owned only 1 city in italy. Few turns later I sent a spy to see how far the romans have expanded. I am SHOCKED to see that the eporites have All of southern italy. Is the cause im using BI with EB or is it just a VER Y VERY rare expansion by eporites in Italy?
BTW I love that they pushed the romans back to rome, very cool.

that should do the trick.
Nope, it does not help :/ Anyone got ideas, why?

This error should only appear, when you have altered the descr_strat.txt.
I ran into that problem a few hours ago when trying to manually get nightbattles enabled in my installation.
After I changed descr_strat.txt (in D:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\EBV1 mod\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion) to contain "options bi" and "night_battles_enabled" without the ";" in front of them, the checkbox in the prebattle screen always stayed dark grey (tried with Pyrrhus, who has enough command stars to be nightbattle capable without traits). That was the same result as with Ferromancers EB for BI installation. After looking around in the forums I found a description of how to get EB to work on the .EXE of the Alexander expansion. There it was recommended to not use "options bi" but "options +prebattle_night_battle_tickbox".
In the first try I added the "prebattle_night_battle_tickbox" after a "," in the same line as "options bi". When I tried to start a new campaign a got the above error message.
The reason for the error seems a to be an error in the "options" line (which is not the line that is reported to be faulty !).
I got the error to disappear and have the night battle tickbox enabled when I replaced "options bi" with "options +prebattle_night_battle_tickbox". (the + is essential!)

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I finally made it to work. I followed instructions in this thread: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showp...3&postcount=85
However I used descr_strat from ferromancer`s installer to have night battles and formations enabled. So far the only glitch, is that there is no icon for shieldwall in the battle interface (clicking appropiate hotkey works though).

You will only have the option to begin a night battle, when your general has at least 4 command stars. The night-fighter trait is disabled in EB. To activate it, you would need to remove the ";" at the beginning of each line in the "NIGHT FIGHTING SECTION" of the "export_descr_character_traits.txt" file. This gives general a chance to acquire the traits.
Additionally in ''../eb/data/export_descr_VnVs_enums.txt'' you have to add the following lines (they should not be present in vanilla EB)
Night_Fighter
Night_Fighter_desc
Night_Fighter_effects_desc
Noctophiliac
Noctophiliac_desc
Noctophiliac_effects_desc
and last in "../eb/data/text\export_VnVs.txt'' the following lines should be added, if they are not present:
¬--------------------
{Alone_in_the_Dark} Alone in the Dark
{Alone_in_the_Dark_desc}
In the dark, there were always strange noises, and as a child this man heard them.
{Alone_in_the_Dark_effects_desc}
-1 Command when fighting at night
¬--------------------
{Night_Fighter} Night Fighter
{Night_Fighter_desc}
This trait allows a general to fight a battle at night.
{Night_Fighter_effects_desc}
+1 Command when fighting at night
¬--------------------
{Night_Terrors} Night Terrors
{Night_Terrors_desc}
Darkness is not a friend. Darkness is where bad things happen.
{Night_Terrors_effects_desc}
-2 Command when fighting at night, +1 to personal security (improves the chances of detecting and foiling assassination attempts).
¬--------------------
{Noctophobic} Noctophobic
{Noctophobic_desc}
Whatever his reasons, this man is terrified by darkness and the long, long hours of the lonely night.
{Noctophobic_effects_desc}
-3 Command when fighting at night, +2 to personal security (improves the chances of detecting and foiling assassination attempts).
¬--------------------
{Likes_the_Dark} Likes the Dark
{Likes_the_Dark_desc}
In the dark people get scared. But not this man.
{Likes_the_Dark_effects_desc}
+1 Command when fighting at night.
¬--------------------
{Night_Owl} Night Owl
{Night_Owl_desc}
The cloak of night is a friend to this man. He uses the dark; he is strong in the dark.
{Night_Owl_effects_desc}
+2 Command when fighting at night.
¬--------------------
{Noctophiliac} Noctophiliac
{Noctophiliac_desc}
Born at midnight, or in love with the moonlight, this man is a real night bird, almost resenting the coming of dawn.
{Noctophiliac_effects_desc}
+3 Command when fighting at night.
{Noctophiliac_gain_desc}
This man is now seen as an expert when commanding battles at night.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I now have one of those same errors,
Sript Error in EB/Data/Export_descr_unit.txt, at line 140, column 34.
Could not find soldier battle model for unit type 'generic ship baitaz'.
Tried the previous fixes in this thread, nothing has worked.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
is there a chance that this installer works with eb 1.1? btw great installer it works perfect for me...
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I would not use this installer on my 1.1 installation were I any of you. As it does not appear from the first post that it has been updated for 1.1. It will break your installation as you will be overwriting the 1.1 EDU for the old 1.0 EDU with added BI abilities. I would recommend you do it manually or wait til this is updated for 1.1.
-
Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
I used it with 1.1 and it seems to be working fine, no trouble with crashes so far in either campaign or battles... I also didn't install any of the BI specific features such as the shiled walls or night battles.

Oh, ok. I've never used this installer and wasn't aware it offered you options on what the user wants to install. I manually add all of my BI stuff. I guess as long as you stay away from adding the BI specific features the user may be ok.

I actually thought you weren't supposed to use those special features with 1.0 either and so never have... I always used TWFanatics' First Cohort/Better Hoplites mod anyway which I liked the most anyway. No idea if it's compatible with 1.1 though.

I had that error and then realized that I had forgotten to install EB 1.0 before applying the installer.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
So has anyone tried to see if it works for 1.1? Ah what the heck, I'll try it anyway, I'll just reinstall if it messes up.

Re: New installer for Europa Barbarorum with Barbarian Invasion
So it doesn't work. I just tried a custom battle, but when I try to start it, it takes me back to the faction selection screen. Help?
