Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
1. England-Zim
2. Ireland-Phonicsmonkey
3. Wales-Roadkill
4. Scotland-deguerra
5. Norway-Cheetah
Rules:
-I'll be setting up a console enabled game, allowing me to change passwords if something happens, but I'm hoping not to have to.
-Regardless, I will need everyone's passwords (pm them to me) in case a turn must be skipped or played by a subtitute.
-I'd like players to complete their turns within 48 hours of it being uploaded by the player before them, or to notify me if circumstances require them to have more time.
-Behind the scenes negotiation and diplomacy is encouraged. However, If you want to make a public ingame pronouncement, doing it in this thread is fine. If enough people want to negotiate in the open, or just threaten eachother or gloat over victories, I can start an in character thread.
Save naming convention:
Britannia-1-1
Britannia for the campaign name, first 1 for the turn number, and the second number signifies which player is up.
e.g. England goes first, when I finish my turn I will save and upload as Britannia-1-2. Britannia, first turn, second player.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
First order of business: Would anyone like an In Character thread to make proclamations, public negotiations, brag about victories, etc.?
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Sure, I just wouldn't expect anyone to use it for a few turns so it could wait.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I'll wait a bit then. It just occurred to me that A. at least one of the older Roman hotseats was full of public diplomacy as well as secret pm diplomacy, and B. In real history, many alliances and deals were open, as well as many being secret. I figure it might add a bit to the roleplaying of the game, especially if players could taunt eachother over battles and such.

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Why, oh why did I have to be offline yesterday evening ? ~:mecry:
I would have joined... only too late...
Good luck on that PBM, have fun...
PS : Sorry for the hijack...

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Sorry, Tristran. If it makes you feel better, I'm the faction with all the bullseyes on his back this time. :clown:
After our current round of Kingdoms hotseat games ends, I'm hoping we'll start another playing different factions. Another Britannia one will definately be on my list.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I would definitely be up for playing the same campaigns over again but I'd prefer a different faction each time where possible.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
have a world council, like the diet of kotr but more like united nations. you can mock each other, etc. all the diplomats go to rome or something
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Gentlemen, I will be ready to play the first turn this evening after work, in about 8 hours or so..
I'm really excited, like a child before Xmas
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I should be able to play either as soon as Roadkill posts in this thread saying he's ready to start, or after the 24 hour period ends, about 4ish your time. Let's see how quickly we can get the first two faction's turns in. :2thumbsup:

Damn I wish I had Kingdoms installed on my work computer
:idea2:

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Me too. But I work for an IT department at my university and they are pretty picky about what goes on their computers.
But I'm glad we're going to be under-way soon! :2thumbsup:

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
lol - I think attempting to install M2TW or any computer game on my work PC would be a certain way to get myself fired pretty quickly....much like spending all day surfing computer game forums....erm

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Ok, I'm going to set up the game and start playing. :2thumbsup:

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
My turn is done. :2thumbsup:

Phonicsmonkey, you're next.
Roadkill, I still need your password in case you need someone to sub for you some time.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I should be able to get to it in the next couple hours...
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Sounds good. Looks like we'll get at least two factions' turns in a few hours, maybe three if Roadkill does his, too. :D
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
We did it! Two turns in a couple hours. :2thumbsup: Depending on where in Canada he is, it might be too late for Roadkill to do his tonight, but that's still pretty good just starting out.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Away till saturday afternoon.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Hey guys ! Thanks for the headsup Zim. Keep me in mind if you need a sub.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Where do i unzip the save to? I can't find my britannia folder.
EDIt: NVM FOUND IT. I should be done.
But i'm confused after I'm done all my stuff do i just click next turn and save it? or what.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Yeah, it took me a while to find the kingdoms folders the first time I did one of these games, :sweatdrop: . I guess you noticed they're in the "mods" folder.
The best thing to do is hit end turn, then when the screen asking for the next player's password comes up, hit escape and save the game. That way, the next person doesn't have a chance to see what you're up to.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
How do I upload the save?
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/?C=M;O=D
I don't know how to upload the direct link to the save, but I uploaded it into the PBM directory just sort the dates and its at the top.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
You can upload it here in the filespace the ORG is kind enough to provide. :2thumbsup:

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I have the save but I'm beat and I drank a lot. I'll get to it when I wake up tomorrow. Since Cheetah is out till saturday anyways, I figure it's not a big deal. :beam:

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
No big deal at all, although I wish I'd been drinking tonight. ~

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
rar's are fine.
But for our naming convention, it should be Brittania-2-1 which means Brittania game, 2nd turn, 1st player.
Not a big deal now since you put up the link for Zim to take but something to keep in mind for the future.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
That file type is fine.
I'm off on a half day trip, but I should be able to get to this tonight.

Sure.
Also, an hour ago I would have said that it will be a very peaceful game. However, I just got a rather harsh message from someone *khm*, so things could be more interesting than they seemed. :2thumbsup: ~;)

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
i will follow this with great interest, the international council seems quite intriguing.

Medieval 2 Total Peace seems boring. Brittania is not big enough for 5 kingdoms so it was inevitable that there would be clashes. The more I play these, the more it is pounded home just how important the first few diplomatic moves are. They really set the tone for the rest of the game.
Also, I like to incorporate history into how I play these hotseats and the real King Alexander was not very patient with the Norse when it came to those islands.
No matter what, it should be fun. :2thumbsup:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Ok, I am taking the save. I might take a little while(less than a day) with it. With all those settlements and less money than I'd like I think a bit of planning is in order.
Thanks gibsonsg91921, I thought it would add an interesting element to the game. Of course, it has no power, except maybe that of popular opinion. But I think it will be a fun way to air grievances in the open, make public deals, and maybe just threaten/insult eachother. :clown:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Roadkill,
I can get a diplomat to the bridge east of Cardiff, but none are close enough to reach any of your armies or settlements. Hopefully he can reach one next turn(maybe you have a diplomat that can meet him?). We'll have to delay the settlement giving one more turn.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/Britannia-2-2.zip
All done. Sorry about the wait. I tried to play the save earlier and I kept getting a graphics error. One cleaning of the cd and restarting of the computer later, everything was fine!
I want to congratulate everyone on getting a whole turn done so quickly. If we can keep up the pace, I think it will stay exciting for everyone. :2thumbsup:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I will get to this tonight...

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
wait, so is ozzman even in this game at all? it presents an interesting idea about teams in hotseats, for diplomacy if nothing else

Nope. I asked Cheetah and he said he hadn't given permission for Ozzman to post on his behalf.
I just had a funny and completely impractical idea, succession hotseat. :clown:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
A Roleplaying Hotseat game is completely possible. We did it with the Grand Campaign in KotR.
I don't think I would like to play such a game though. I prefer things come about organically in the game. Also, I think people should be able to run their factions any way they want. They don't even have to roleplay. It's pure multi-player and anything goes, except for a couple of basic rules.
Just my opinion. If others want to play hotseats this way, they are more than welcome to start one. Or if Zim wants to turn this game into that, he can, but I'll be bowing out if that happens.
Just not the kind of game I want to play.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I didn't say that I was changing the nature of this game, just that the idea hit me when I saw Gibson's post. :clown:
Wasn't there a mini KOTR for the Teutonic campaign once? That would have been interesting to try, although at the time I didn;'t really notice it, not having even gotten into KOTR itself.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Yeah, there was an attempt to get a Teutonic multi-faction Succession game started. I think it is in permanent limbo at the moment.
I don't think your idea is impractical at all. It would just have to be thought out and have a good group of role-players to bring it off.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
maybe tho, like ozzman did, there could be multiple representatives who debate about the your kingdom during the downtime while you wait for the save.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
There would have to be a system of rewards/punishments. Otherwise, what's to stop Ozzman from getting Cheetah involved with a war with Ireland? Which basically would have happened if we took Ozz seriously.
Basically you'd have to have something like the Count system set up. And avatars for characters. But there are no battles to fight. So there is less incentive for players to join and get attached to characters. Not saying there is no incentive but you'd have to think up different carrots and sticks.

I think this might make it a bit hard on the people who are actually playing the game. One of the nice things about Kingdoms Hotseat games is that the turns go quickly. We go through multiple turns in a day, sometimes. There aren't many factions, and few rebel settlements means players can get right to struggling with eachother directly. Having people join factions as "representatives" would bog things down, I think.
If any players want to do something like that, they could create their own "Diet" type thread and invite a few people to play with them, but I'd like to keep the offical Council thread to the five actual players. That way username recognition remains high, making it easy to recognize whish kingdom the posting player is ruling, and the thread won't become too large from all of each faction's members debating eachother.
That's not to say I wouldn't join a game like that, I just don't think I'd care to run it.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
interesting theories. also, it would be difficult to keep people from other kingdoms from watching your secret dealings in your diet threads.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Yeah, if people want to make a totally non-binding thread where they just comment on the direction of games IC, they can. I am not sure how much fun it would be but the option is there. I just don't want them to be binding or influential on the current games unless those GM's agree. What Ozzman did was try to change the course of the politics of the game without having a real stake in it. To me that is unfair to Cheetah and should be discouraged unless it is agreed to beforehand.
I agree with Zim that one of the perks with these Hotseat games is their relative ease and quickness. True, some of us pour a lot of time into storyline and character development but these things are completely optional. If you want, you can play your faction completely OOC and just ignore the IC PM's from other players. Adding massive amounts of bureaucracy would bog the game down to the point where it would not be as much fun for me.
If more people want to get involved with these games, then I would encourage them to start up more games. The demand seems to be there. A lot of people would be more than happy to play in more than one game at once and you don't need all of the slots filled up by players anyways. Also, if your the GM, you can make the game as complicated and layered as you wish.
Me, I prefer the simplicity of just letting people play their factions how they want within the bounds of as few rules as possible.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
perhaps an enlightenment-style salon in which various people discuss politics in a nonbinding atmosphere? it could be hosted by a totally third party person, with irish, english, scottish, welsh, and norwegian aristocrats chatting and perhaps getting into heated debates? haha
it could be a neat way for people who are interested but dont have the time to play (ie, like myself) to join the game
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
That would be fine. I could start a thread like that if you'd like (or you could  ). I'm not sure participation would be very high, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. If it took off it would be interesting. I've noticed at least a few people follow these games anyway.

I personally see no problem with that as long as it is made clear to all five actual players that they can completely ignore this thread at will. It would be up to the individual players if they wish to be influenced by the talk that goes on in the salon.
That way, it adds flavor, allows people to get involved without committing too much time, and avoids making the salon attendee a "side-seat-player". I don't want to bog down the actual game.
I don't want people sitting on their turns because they are waiting for "salon diplomacy" to happen or are bogged down with requests from people who don't even play the game.
Also, there should be a certain amount of demand for this so we're not doing this just for one or two people. Otherwise it will just die from neglect.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
PK,
No worries. No matter what there will still be a 48 hour limit for turns, unless a valid excuse is supplied. "I want to see what the rumor-mongers say about Wales' intentions" shall not be considered a valid excuse. :clown:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
The idea is that the salon debates will have nothing to do with the actual politics. Anything anyone says is not politically binding, it could just be Norwegians mouthing off at Welsh for whatever reason but that doesn't mean the King of Norway and the King of Wales aren't friends. I'll start it up.
EDIT: It's up. I got the idea cuz in AP Euro this week we're having an Enlightenment Salon in character and we have to portray our particular enlightenment figures. I'm Voltaire! haha
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I like the idea of the salon - be interested to see whether you get much takeup...

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I'd give it another day or so, just in case. I made a post in there to make sure the thread doesn't slide off of the first page any time soon.
To my fellow players, I wouldn't take anything from that post as bearing on the actual game, I just quite literally pulled it out of nowhere while trying to think of something interesting to say. :clown:

And that's the point of the salon thread, to have reactions in a non-hostile environment (that may become a tad hotter as it goes on, if it goes on) and to discuss things.

Yeah, what I say in the salon thread has nothing to do with the faction I play in the game. In fact, to be fair, I am playing it as really anti-Scottish. :2thumbsup:

That Milanese trader seems to attribute more guile to me than I'm capable of. I wish I could expertly play all the factions against eachother. :clown:

Well I figured the players could help breath new life into it. But we have to be careful and walk a fine line when we play separate characters. I'll try not to put in any really in-depth information that I got IC from letters or anything.
I figure it should just be self-righteous academics debating about things they think they know a lot about. :beam:

I hear you about auto-resolve - such a shame we can't actually fight one another on the battle map
but still, what a great way to play, I'm so glad I got involved!

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread

Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
Alright, I play in two more turns. :2thumbsup:
Things definately seem to be heating up, in a way that would be impossible if these games were played more quickly. :clown: I'm glad we did the Council thing, it has added an extra dimension to the game.
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I had a lot of fun writing the "Alexander goes mad" post. :2thumbsup:
As for heating up, yeah it's getting good. I think the speed is just about right. Going quickly helps keep interest up but leaving enough time for diplomacy allows all of the layers and schemes to come about.
I'm really starting to get hooked on these hotseat games. SP is just starting to seem really stale now. I keep starting SP games but I get bored and never finish them.
But with hotseats, I get giddy with anticipation over playing a single turn. :beam:
-
Re: Britannia Hotseat Campaign:OOC thread
I can see why you liked that one. :laugh4:
Yeah, every once in a while I start an SP game, but I haven't been able to keep one going since I entered my first hotseat game here. I thought not being able to play battles would lessen the fun a little, but I haven't even noticed (even in the Crusades game, the only one where I've had any battles. :clown: ). SP Europa Universalis 3 can hold my attention a bit longer (I have a game going on where I'm trying to make Wales a superpower), but not much longer.
These things are addictive, expecially the diplomacy. The challenge of both working with and against other human beings makes a huge difference, as does the chance to roleplay.
Next few turns in this will likely set the tone of the early game, and the next few of the Teutonic game will see some real action. I can't wait. :2thumbsup:

While I'm not the GM, I feel strongly about this. You should play your turn exactly once!
You should not reload and play part or all of the turn again. Make your choices and deal with what happens.
An exception is if the game crashes or something.
Zim should feel free to weigh in or give his own rules for this specific PBM.
