Wolfenstein ET anyone?
I never considered Wolfenstein ET until my kids told me to play it. They love to beat their Dad in shooters.
Since I always do as I'm told, I enlisted along with dozens of other noobs (insert sepia photograph of Adrian II in battle fatigues with cigar stump in mouth and voice-over saying: 'The day before he saw action, Adrian II wrote in a letter to his girlfriend: "If I make it to Berlin I can finally pay for your abortion, so shut the * up and send me a cake, woman."').
Within minutes I found myself in the thick of the action in snowy Bavaria, a.k.a. Fueldump, one of the classic ET scenarios. I loved it, particularly the covert ops and mortar roles.
I began to frequent the servers of the sfs-clan.eu where a certain Tosa Inu is chief admin. The day before yesterday I even had the pleasure of blowing the Honourable Tosa Inu to smithereens with a mortar shell (yes, Tosa, I am Baby Jesus).
Yesterday I personally :tnt: the fueldump twice in a row and made General.
Then it struck me that we could easily make an .Org team on WET. The game is totally free so everyone can play, the client can be quickly downloaded, no effort or expense required.
I could easily build a new character named Adrian II for the purpose. We could create characters under our Org. names. Maybe Tosa Inu would be so kind to suggest the best way for us to engage in team warfare. Mayhaps we could set up a dedicated server. To put a long proposal short:
Headshot, anyone? :rifle:

I've had poor luck getting such clients to work for me (not tech-savvy enough). I hit the download link, save file, and then when I click it on my desktop I get a message that windows doesn't recognize the file type and doesn't know what program to use to open it. From there I'm stumped. A little friendly tech support and I'd be happy to join in.

Hello Adrian II,
While I have both RTCW and ET and played both online and used the nick TosaInu there as well, I'm not the Tosa Inu you saw.
ET is a nice game indeed, Kraellin and me played quite some.

The file from download.com seems to be an executable(.exe), should be easy to open and install. I'm currently downloading it as a zip archive and every Windows since ME or so can open these by default.

Same here, come to think of it, I doubt my old account even works. But this is good because I just opened a thread about a online shooter that is still being played and I forgot all about this one. But it's fast indeed, I am used to the pace of Rogue Spear, which can't be mentioned without reminding everyone of the absolute fact that it is the best multiplayergame ever created.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
For those who have not yet played, I recommend Wolf ET. Seriously, it's really fun and well done for a free multi player game.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
It's fun, I suppose, but it's far too fast, and sort of hard to keep track of what's going on. My mind is more suited to tactics and strategy than shoot-'em-ups of this pace, though I admit I have a certain liking for James Bond games.
I prefer Red Orchestra or similar games. Besides, it doesn't have connection problems or lag for me nearly as much, interestingly enough.

Boys will be boys, Husar, and I am a rare geriatric species. I drink, I smoke, I laugh at all the wrong jokes, and if you'll promise to keep it a secret I'm not ashamed to say I still have sex at my extremely advanced age. And I'll tell you something else: to a doddering senile like myself, blowing out the brains of half the 15-year-old population on an FPS-server is almost as good as sex.
The part about the kick votes every night was overstated though, it was only in the beginning that I got those about every other night. Particularly when I made the mistake of experimenting with the mortar on a server that acknowledges friendly fire... :wall: :shame:

Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
OK, so I propose we all buckle up and try some the www.sfs-clan.eu servers.
They have three servers running 24/24, the mods and atmosphere are okay there and they don't wipe your XP all the time. If our American friends have trouble logging on to an sfs server or getting acceptable pings (25 to 60) we can always change to another server.
Warning: the language on sfs-servers is not PG13 and the Medics are outfitted as women in tight pants; as a Covert Ops you can, um, divest them of their upper garments.. unless they kill you first and use their knife to cut off your um.. well, you get the picture.
The first sfs-server is for Fueldump only. Fueldump is teh original WET scenario and it is still so popular that it deserves its separate server.
The second server, 'Africa', has three other classic scenarios that are constantly recycled: Battery, Oasis and Goldrush (aka Tobruk).
The blueprints of the maps are kinda hard to find on the Web, but I have found a good URL here.
The third sfs server has twelve different scenarios for hardcore players, so I think we should stay away from that one for the time being.
I will create a new character named Adrian II on sfs-fueldump and see what comes up. Starting anew means you suck as a marksman etcetera, but is worth the trouble and promotion is very fast in this game if you play it well.
I play the American side usually, but if luck finds me on the Kraut side I won't hesitate to shoot, Jahaaa! :skull: :2thumbsup:
P.S. Oh, and Ajax, there are two patches. Make sure to install the 260b patch. It is indispensable.

Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Nudity, sir, in a war game?! How outrageous! How scandalous to tarnish the noble sport of killing one's fellow man for pleasure and profit, watching their blood splatter on your uniform, listening to their screams as you trample their dying bodies, with such inappropriateness! Tis enough to cause a stoic man to avert his eyes for fear of impurifying his soul!
In other words, yes, I'll see if I've still got it installed.

Only have some knowledge from americas Army and TF2 but if I should ever get a ping of less than 100 on an American server I'll notify you, I doubt it's possible to play together with both pings being similar except maybe on a northpole server or so.

I downloaded a 2.60b patch which was basically a .exe that I copied over the old one but when I try to connect to the server it tells me I'm missing some official pak file.
Before that I could connect to servers from the server list just fine.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
There's a 2.60 patch that you need to put on first, I think. Anyone know where to get that for free? I can find 2.60b but not 2.60.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
I basically downloaded a 2.60 version, got an error saying my versiondoesn't match the server's, then found only that 2.60b patch, overwrote the exe file and now I'm missing some official pak file. :dizzy2:
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Sorry about the high pings, guys. Rabbit me heartie, I enjoyed seeing you on the Fueldump server, and I know it sucks when you lagg like that. I guess we'll have to find another server.
The 260b patch comes as a zip which you have to unpack. After unpacking, you must copy and paste both the ET.exe and ETDED.exe straight into your Wolfenstein file. When it says 'Do you want to overwrite the existing etmain and etpub files?' you should answer 'yes'. Then you should be good to go.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Eh, what? I downloaded the 2.60b .zip from two different sources and both consist of two completely screwed readme files with no real format and three OS folders, the Win32 only has two files ET.exe and ETDED.exe, the files you mention I cannot find anywhere. A link to the patch you're talking about would be very nice as my patches do not have these files for god knows why.
edit: Is it possible that the server is using a mod and doesn't auto-upload it to me?
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Could etpub = ETDED?
Ok, got the same error message as Husar...
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
ETDED I suspect is the dedicated server .exe and not really needed unless you run your own server, it also says I'm missing a pak file but doesn't even say which one.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
100% downloaded and 86% installed and it tells me I've got a corrupt install file.:wall:
Back to downloading I guess.
Can we set up a game time for next weekend? I should be able to play then.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Aaargh, you are right. I was wrong about the 260b patch files.
The ET.exe and ETDED.exe should be copied and pasted directly into the Wolfenstein file, overwriting the original exe's.
I am such an ass sometimes. :shame:
P.S. Setting up a game for next weekend sounds good. We should be able to fix issues and set up some sort of dedicated server by then.

Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Ok, a few questions:
1) What does "Awaiting challenge..." mean? If I can't join the server, say so and don't leave me waiting for 24 seconds+
2) Why was I able to fly the first time I joined a map and since then have been kicked/unable to join every single server?
3) Must something be downloaded for every server? :furious:
Well, I guess I messed something up with the patch so I'll restart the process when I have time (next weekend probably).

Hmmmm. Looks like the specifications didn't anticipate the existance of such a thing as vista. Got twice the recommended specs but because I have vista sucking the life out of this setup it's still slower then a bucket of [slugs] uphill. Will have to pass untill modern computers with vista can match a 5 year old pentium 3.

Have you eliminated the usual suspects? For instance by running the game as Admin (right-click on icon, then click 'Run as Administrator')? This takes care of 90% of Vista gaming issues.
I am sorry to hear about some of the installation problems. Particularly Ajax' case sounds like a mess. I can't help you or I certainly would, mate. You can always post your issue in the Apothecary.
Ideally, we should find or set up a server that is about halfway (ping-wise) between the U.S. and Europe. Otherwise, either the Mercuns or the Yurpeens are going to look like yesterday's news during gameplay.

Aye, 't is true. Picture, if you will, scenes of horrendous devastation wrought by mortar fire and flame throwers, heads exploded, spines ripped in half, throats cut heinously from behind, all this interspersed with subtle cruelties visited on one's sexual person.
The King of the Battle is the Field Op, though. If used well, your options turn you into a walking widowmaker. Yesterday night I killed seven enemies in one air strike. Wiped out an entire company, resulting in quick victory for our side. It doesn't matter how fast you move or shoot, if you are up against a smart enemy Field Op you're dead meat. He will order an airstrike on the spot where you are going to be ten seconds later, and will be long gone by the time you die like a rat in a bonfire. The nicest thing of all is when inside the normal battle you get a battle of the Field Ops, above the fray as it were, where one is trying to outsmart (and kill) the other as well as outdo the other in cumulative kills, securing objectives or choke points etcetera. When the voice-over announces another 'Godlike' killing spree, nine times out of ten it's a Field OP.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
I dis agree, when you get some good snipers and a good medic running around behind an enemy spawn you do alot more damage than any air raid ever would, adreniline needles and hidden troops ;)

Between the three of them, they sure can do a lot of damage.
Difference is that a Field Op can do so on his own. :balloon2:

Hey
Here are some of mine achievements;
1) Sniper on ET PUB - Battery, attacker - 2 minutes , 15 shots, 100% Acc and 10 headshots
2) Eng ET PUB, Siwa Oasis, eng, defender - 20 kills, 2 deaths
3) ET Pro, Radar, med, attacked - KrooK vs 6 Germans - and only KrooK survived :)
BTW what is your favourite trick?
I love sniping opponents through bushes or next to trees, when I don't see them.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Goddamn!
I remember this game like my yesterday. Been out of it for about 2 years now. Before that, I spent probably over one thousand hours with ET. Playing mostly at good ol' [LGND] server, then before I kind of quit I was playing at (BiO)Clanserver and EFTERLYST (if I'm correct with the names). Anyway, best multiplayer game I've ever played so far. A game that requires teamwork if going after the objective, and true skill on 1vs1 situations. Intensive and fast none camping game, a game where camping is disadvantage, my kind of game.
Just before I quit playing, I've already noticed that cheaters had just started their invasion on the roll. Wonder how the game is today, is PB even being updated? Though ClanBase has still ladders for ET...

I'm not going to make any grand claims- but I do have a lot of plain fun as a mobile machine gunner. I was playing on the appropriately named 'noobs forever' server and racking up some decent kills by finding choke points, lying down and waiting for the inevitable enemy charge. :hmg:
Once everyone's wise to me, someone is bound to find a way to take me out- but then I just find a new place until I wear out my welcome there and eventually rotate to the first position once they've stopped looking for me. I've managed to rack up some respectable 10-12 kill streaks that way. It's funny watching the enemy run towards their doom like lemmings and to see how long it takes them to wise up. :beam:

Let me guess: as a German, lying in wait atop the ladder behind the grate? I think I would try to kill you with a bazooka, which takes about a second to fire. Arm it at the bottom of the ladder, press fire, climb up the ladder during the remaining second and aim. Kaboom.
Yesterday I planned on owning big as Field Op on an sfs server. Not. The enemy had a Field Op ten times better. It almost took the fun out of the game for me. You look through your binoculars, you spot the guy, but before you can click for support fire on the enemy position he kills you with two well placed headshots. You see, he was looking throuhg bis binocs too, and if you do it properly you can spot the enemy with your binocs and then fire your machie gun at the precise positon, as if you were a sniper. So I respawned, and immediately died because he ordered support fire near my spawn. I respawned, I turned the corner, to find out that he was posted in the alley behind me - bang again. Sooo, I respawned, and walked straight into his machine gun spray. And again. And again. Oh brother.. :shame:

It comes automatically with the install, but after that you must also enable it in the options screen. That's because some clans and servers deliberately ignore PunkBuster, which can be fun I suppose.
-
Re: Wolfenstein ET anyone?
Got it enabled, but was kicked & banned from the sfs server nonetheless. I can barely enable my Wii and I am supposed to know how to hack the game
tried starting server, and it says my punkbuster is out of date. It may very well be that it is supposed to upgrade automatically but supposed to and windows don't mix very well. God how I miss my Apple.
