Symbols for cavalry, artillery etc ?
Greetings All !
I'm making some deployment, combat tactics maps (for the community). I'm having some trouble representing the different unit types according to today's standard military denomination. Please see the following for detail, NATO Military Symbols. Is there a standard denomination for ancient military units in the same manner ? Moderators, I'm really not sure where to put this so if I misplaced kindly move at your discretion.
Thank you.
Salute !
Re: Symbols for cavalry, artillery etc ?
Don't think so, but why not use the standard M2TW symbols for these units?
triangle for missile units (you can probably change the symbol to accomodate for archer vs artillery)
rectangle for cav (might want to accomodate for melee cav vs missile cav)
and vertical bar for infantry and square for general
Re: Symbols for cavalry, artillery etc ?
That's a good idea. Thanks.
Where can I find these, are they ingame or in a guide ?
Apologies for ignorance.
Re: Symbols for cavalry, artillery etc ?
Since unit diversification was limited in early medieval times, there really sn't a huge need for different symbols when explaining the battles. Often, battle maps would just use large, colored rectangles with a small, perpendicular line on one side to indicate facing.
But, when there was diversity in armies, I think it was pretty standard to show infantry units as solid rectangles, cavalry as rectangles with a diagonal line through it, and archery units as squares.
Here's a good example of what I mean:

@ Sinan
FactionHeir is quite correct. If you want to see exactly how they look, set up a custom battle including units of each of the four classes: spear, missile, infantry, and cavalry. Press pause and take notes.
You can also get an idea from the FAUST and FUSIL (p.25) Unit Stat Guides which I just posted this Saturday. (See several posts below for links to them)
Looking forward to your guide.
